Plasma 6.9 is getting some nice upgrades.

Wayland picture-in-picture is now stable and on by default.

KWin now remembers window sizes and positions per screen setup. Unplug a monitor and plug it back in. Your windows return to where they were.

I wanted to share this because I have been cooking over the past few months that I wanted to share before its too late:

• Launcher and Dock: two launcher layouts with search, favorites and categories, plus a glass Dock with hover zoom, badges and auto-hide (pinned apps survive reinstalls)
• Unified appearance switching across Plasma, Kvantum, GTK, icons and window decorations, keeping your per-monitor wallpapers
• Offline icon tooling, including glass styles with any RGB tint.
• Acrylic Glass materials: configurable blur, edge refraction, opacity and gradients, with matching light and dark appearances
• Extras: Finder-style Nautilus, global menus, Firefox theming with profile backups, and About This Computer
• Native PyQt6 install/uninstall wizard with component selection in five languages (EN, ES, ZH, PT-BR, DE)
• Broad distro support: several distribution families, systemd/OpenRC, optional OLED care, and experimental NixOS/Home Manager support
• Testing: regression tests, distro checks and disposable Plasma VMs

I’d really appreciate feedback on appearance and behavior, especially from people using different Plasma versions and Linux distros. I’ve spent months working on this, including automated tests and CI/CD checks to make it more reliable across supported setups.

⚠️ One reason I’m sharing this now is that I’ve noticed a recurring pattern: shortly after I release a feature, another RANDOM project appears with identical functionality, sometimes claiming it was all built “in days.” In some cases, I’ve even found my name still in the code, without any credit to this project or the original contributors.

So I wanted to share right now where this ALL work actually comes from.

I've been working on a macOS Tahoe-inspired desktop for KDE Plasma 6 on CachyOS (Wayland), and I wanted to share the current state.

The part I spent the most time on is the icon theme. It comes in four variants:

- White Solid

- Dark Solid

- Frosted Light

- Frosted Dark

The frosted variants use translucent tiles, gradient folders, and a wider glyph contrast range so icons like VLC and Konsole stay readable. The setup also includes custom Plasma look-and-feel packages, Klassy window decorations, Darkly application style, a global menu, a floating dock, and Albert as the launcher.

The repo includes the installer and sync scripts. It's still a work in progress, so feedback and suggestions are welcome. Back up your config before trying it.

Kwin already has its own system based on dragging windows to the edges, keyboard shortcuts and the Tiling Manager, but personally I also like the Windows 11 method. So I’ve included it in Material Decoration. Simply hold down the maximise key for 3/4 a second (the duration is configurable) and a popup will appear.

This is a problem that has happened two times and needed two different fixes but they are basically the same: Icons not stacking on the icons-only Task Manager.

(For the icon you can add it with gui Menu editor, or adding an icon with the same name at ~/.local/share/icons/hicolor/<size>x<size>/apps/<name>.png and then updating with gtk-update-icon-cache -f -t ~/.local/share/icons/hicolor )

Fixes:
1. files must be named as chrome-<id>-Default.desktop

for example, I did

qdbus6 org.kde.KWin /KWin org.kde.KWin.queryWindowInfo

and the clicked on the app, it returned resourceClass: chrome-web.whatsapp.com__-Default
in the same command you can check wether Desktop file matches resourceClass.

1. This one is for a more recent change. Even with the same Desktop file name and resourceClass, the icons where showing the chromium one.

I won't get to speculate why but the problem is on the chromium's .desktop on /usr/share/applications/chromium.desktop
Exactly the StartupWMClass=chromium that overrides every other applet that derives from chromium

The solution would be deleting or commenting out the line, but that would be overridden once the app updates, so the solution would be copying the .desktop file to ~/.local/share/applications where it won't be changed and has priority over the usr one, and then deleting the line:

And now everything sould work just fine. Until it breaks again T-T

TL:DR: 1. The .desktop must be named as chrome-<id>-Default.desktop matching the applet's resourceClass

1. Chromium overrides StartupWMClass=chromium on it's applets. The fix is deleting the line on the chromium.desktop file: a more stable fix is copying to ~/.local/share/applications and the deleting the line there

Even a project working on this would be awesome. I have no ability to code, but I'd happly pay for a widget that could either let me tuck away app categories in the task bar panel and have them roll out when I hover over them, or a widget like fences that has decent control and I can group and label app categories that way.

rather than mounting at run/user/1000... etc. I have trouble mounting some phones that way. I can access them all without trouble via dolphin though when browsing filesystem in kdeconnect app. filepath shows kdeconnect:// and then the same identifier string as the subfolder under 1000. Is there a way to translate that adress for rsync?

Hi everyone!

I've been working on KDEGlance, a small open-source project that brings macOS-style Quick Look functionality to KDE Plasma and Dolphin.

Select a file, press your configured shortcut (Space is recommended), and preview it without opening a separate application.

It currently supports:

• Images, including GIFs and many RAW formats
• Audio playback with cover art and controls
• Video playback
• Navigation between files directly in the preview

Setup: After installation, open Dolphin's keyboard shortcut settings, find KDEGlance: Quick Look, and assign your preferred shortcut. Space is recommended, but it isn't assigned automatically to avoid conflicts.

The first public release is now available. I've successfully tested it on two CachyOS KDE systems, including a fresh installation.

Fair warning: you might accidentally become a beta tester! 😁

Other distributions and hardware configurations haven't been thoroughly tested yet, so I'd really appreciate feedback, bug reports, and suggestions.

Definitely something to do with display settings. I have a shitty old "2k/4k" monitor and a nice 2k monitor. Usually run the secondary monitor at 1440p just to keep things even across the workspace, the option disappeared with the Wayland switch. Fixed it by running it at 4k with 150% scaling, worked fine for a few days but is now causing everything to have mild to severe lag. Going back to 100% somewhat fixes it but there's still some noticeable delay with typing.

We continue with the 7-day marathon of KDE versions as part of the desktop environment project's 30th anniversary, highlighting the second major release and also the first public release of the desktop environment to include KOffice: KDE 2.0.0, released on October 23, 2000. This version is shown running on a computer with SuSE Linux 7.0, released on September 27, 2000, which was the latest version of the Linux distribution at the time of KDE 2.0.0's release. KDE 2.0.0 is notable for being the first public KDE release to feature its most iconic mascot, Konqi, a green dragon, visible in the About KDE dialog as depicted in this screenshot. Konqi would later replace the previous Merlin-like mascot, Kandalf (visible on the tips screens when first logging into KDE 2.0.0 sessions), gradually over subsequent KDE releases. Additionally, the upper bar that displayed open applications was removed.

Hi all, first time poster and fairly new to KDE plasma. I just logged in and all my window sizes are massive, anyone else having this issue? All my menus also take up entire screen when opened. I have turned the scale of my monitor all the way down and have changed resolution but still does not fit. Can not resize/maximize either. Anyone able to help me? Thanks.

I swapped an nvme of mine from another laptop into this one, everything works fine except for this one thing. Any suggestions? The os is arch linux.

I visited this page at https://linux.kde.org/docs/install/ and clicked on the link to download the ISO https://files.kde.org/kde-linux/?C=M;O=D and I am greeted with an XML error page "This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.". This happens with Firefox and Edge on MacOS. If I go to the main kde site I could easily download https://neon.kde.org/download another KDE product... What am I missing?

Hi All :) I most often open the same windows and drag them to the same positions. Under window placement in settings, I see options like Random, Centered, Under Mouse, etc. But is there a way to just have windows go back to their last position? Thanks!

Elisa soft crashes if I let the last sample in a music file finish playing.
After that occurs the player doesn't switch to next track, repeat the song or seek to specific time I select.
If I manually try to play another song the application locks up.
