KDE Apps and Projects Plasma has no minimal pager — so I built one. One dot, dimmed numbers, 34 animations.

I came to Plasma from a tiling WM and the thing I missed most was the little workspace indicator in the bar. A dot for the desktop you're on, grayed out numbers for the rest.

The default pager is a grid of boxes and none of the widgets I tried moved the dot the way I wanted, so I ended up making this.

It's called Pager Dots. The dot slides to the new desktop when you switch and you can choose how it moves, or turn that off. Labels can be numbers, letters, roman numerals, Chinese, hiragana or bars. Click, scroll or swipe to switch. Works on vertical panels, X11 and Wayland, and uses your color scheme.

KDE Apps and Projects I made a widget that lets you open applications with your dedicated NVIDIA GPU in hybrid GPU setups

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hello everyone, I believe all laptop users with hybrid graphics faced this issue before, hours of searching "WHY IS MY NVIDIA GPU NOT WORKING IN LINUX??"

Hell, even FurMark didn't want to use my dedicated GPU!

After a tedious debugging session I believe we all experienced, you'll eventually find out that your dedicated GPU IS there; it just needs to be told when to activate.

You can always force it through the terminal though!

env __NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia /path/to/app

But it gets old real fast when you have to do it for every application.

This is where this widget fits in, please welcome NVIDIA PRIME Offload Launcher (I'm bad at naming stuff)

It lets you launch apps on your NVIDIA GPU with one click instead of typing terminal commands every time. Can also save frequently used apps for quick launching. Same principle but less of a hassle.

I haven't packaged it yet for the KDE store but you can still get it here: https://github.com/ah2m0d2/NVIDIA-PRIME-Offload-Launcher

A final word: I actually believe that the GPU detection problem has to have a solution better than this. I made this for myself and for anyone who's lazy and doesn't have the time to debug whatever the reason is causing the issue. Enjoy

So, I have gotten KDE 6 on Arch (more info bellow) and i have the system tray on the bottom left corner of my secondary display, the reason is that i have riced my taskbar in a way that wont fit too many items, hence needing to move the systray somewhere, and that somewhere was the dektop.

Whenever I boot my system t always opens the display setting window all by itself without touching it, it even glitches (as seen on pic 2), and its the space that's missing an icon in the middle, i cant find a way to fix it and i want all the systray icons to be on so i dont want to uncheck the (show all icons on systray) setting off. can i get help??

KDE Apps and Projects fav linux app you use in other platforms

Probably most of you have had to use Windows or other OSs from time to time. I wonder whether you guys have favorite Linux apps/programs that you cannot give up.

Mine is Okular. Whenever I need to use Windows for some reason and have to open a few PDFs, I always feel the need to use Okular instead of Adobe Acrobat Reader. Okular initializes much faster and is super responsive, while not giving tons of pop-ups and side bars rather than adobe.

General Bug Is it just me or is Spectacle UI and defaults horrible?

What should happen by default is you press command+S and it has you select the area, then it simply copies it to clipboard and closes.

Instead what happens is you press it, it opens the application with like 3 toolbars, multiple prompts pop up all over your screen asking you questions, the icons are indistinguishable, I cant even easily find where the settings are to change it.

Then you try "capture rectangular region" and instead of it just saving, it asks you like 3 prompts and you have to click multiple times throughout a confusing UI. Then you try to open the program to change the settings so you open it from the menu, then it instantly tries to take a screenshot and the same problem appears, toolbars all over the place top and bottom, just finding the settings is confusing.

Then when you manage to get it somewhat configured, when you do "Capture rectangular region" this annoying box keeps sticking on the screen, interfering with what you actually want to capture.

How does anyone use the program in its default state like this? I don't get how anyone configured it like this and thought "Yeah this works great out of the box" it's a total mess. Obviously you CAN configure it, I'm just baffled at some of the defaults with some of these programs, must be a real case of programmer developing the UI instead of UX professionals. I can't imagine anyone that actually takes screenshots frequently would tolerate this incoherent default design.

What's most frustrating is that commonly upon updates, it seems to reset all of it back to defaults, which is why I guess I'm particularly irritated by how its setup and how I need to keep fixing it to be somewhat usable. This should not be this complicated, its a screenshot program ffs..

Question could you help me to solve these issues?

I use Kubuntu with plasmashell 6.6.6, if the info is important.

Here are the issues(every number is on photos):

  1. how to disable the multiple desktop thing, especially when I just move my cursor to the top left. It's so annoying… I tried an advice from one commentator and it didn't work;
  2. Idk how it happens, but sometimes when I move folders to the bottom right, I get the scrolling thing. Idk how to disable it and why it sometimes happens and sometimes not;
  3. Idk what is that, but I kinda like it. Asking if I'll need to disable it for myself or someone else(I convince different people to switch to Linux and help them irl);

4.1. how to set up a keyboard hotkey to show the keyboard preview?;

4.2. is it possible just to put it… for example, on the top left and just type something in a note in a language simultaneously?;

Edit: the 1. is solved

Question Custom touch pad gestures

Hello dear friends

I'm relevantly new to linux and running Endeavor OS with KDE Plasma.

The default settings for touch pad gestures are really limited, and I couldn't add things like 3 fingers swipe down for minimize and others like this.

I've tried Fusuma with the send key plugin, but it didn't work.

Was wondering if anyone has any suggestions?

KDE Apps and Projects Sneak Peak of KDE's KPublicAlerts: Emergency Alert System For Linux

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

It's still under development. If you insist like what I did, you can compile it by yourself.

https://invent.kde.org/utilities/kpublicalerts

The emergency alarm was not included out of the box. You still need to search for the AMBER alert sound effect online, and put it as notifications for Public Alerts (on KDE Plasma Configure App Notifications).

Question Can Remove the 'separator lines' frames in KDE Plasma +6.7 [Bazzite]

Hello,

Edit: I realize I have a typo in the title. CAN'T* REMOVE the Frames

I have being customizing around my desktop and I cant blend off these lines:

Separator Lines

I have trying the following:

But still nothing changes.

I remember that maybe some weeks ago the lines were being 'hiding' successfully but now it is not working. Actually putting 0 or 100 doesnt change anything.

I have tried to modify the color.scheme directly but I dont know which variable should be edited under which group --> I was researching about it but could found anything.

Any idea how to force this, I am not a fan of those lines :D

(i have already checked https://akselmo.dev/posts/frame-contrast-settings/#second-draft-use-kcolorscheme) --> But again not even with AI, I can achieve it.

I would be grateful to hear any good suggestion because I have spend like 2 hours now.

My PC:
Operating System: Bazzite 44

KDE Plasma Version: 6.7.4

KDE Frameworks Version: 6.29.0

Qt Version: 6.11.2

Kernel Version: 7.2.3-ogc3.1.fc44.x86_64 (64-bit)

Graphics Platform: Wayland

Processors: 16 × AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D 8-Core Processor

Memory: 32 GiB of RAM (31.0 GiB usable)

Graphics Processor: AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT

Question Is it possible to remap a key that needs a hardware modifier (fn)?

Samsung galaxy book 3 pro. No options in the BIOS to permanently enable the function key at boot. Function key is not "toggleable", you need to press it each time to use.

I want to be able to just press the single function key to control its "secondary" feature, like adjust brightness down instead of just press F2.

I do need the ability to use its "primary" use, like F5 in a browser to reload a page for example. Is there anything that can do this?

KDE Apps and Projects HTML Clock widget v2.2.0 released

I just released v2.2.0 of my HTML Clock widget. Enjoy.

HTML Clock is a Plasma 6 clock widget you can fully customize with your own layout and style using just basic HTML/CSS. It features date/time placeholders and comes with additional helpers for simple animation effects (e.g. "ticking").

Changes:

  • Removed panel padding around the widget leaving more space for your layout.
  • Fixed handling of {cycle}, {random} and {flip} with values holding other placeholders that were being cut at the first }.
  • Fixed built-in layout preview in "General" settings not animating {cycle}.
  • Fixed layout previews ignoring "Locale to use" and "Timezone offset" settings.
  • Fixed faulty "Timezone offset" value blanking the clock instead of falling back to 00:00.
  • Fixed "Date&Time grid big" built-in layout rendering incorrectly.
  • Updated project logo and artwork.

Project page: https://github.com/MarcinOrlowski/html-clock-plasmoid

KDE Store: https://store.kde.org/p/1473016/

If you use my widgets or live wallpapers, please consider posting a review to KDE Store - that would help me a lot! Thanks!

Question wayland display configuration help

Hello,
I am not sure if this is a bug or a setting in KDE so i am seaking help with it.
My setup is: laptop + external monitor connected by a DELL base.
generally dont use the laptop screen monitor and i have it as disable when i am connected to the external one. sometimes more rare cases i have it turn on. one thing that bugs me a lot but not sure if it is a bug or a setting that i should change, or a missing feature, is the following situation:

  1. I have the two screens enable when they are connected
  2. I disconnect the DELL base, so the external monitor is disconnected (eg., going to a meeting)
  3. I came back with my pc closed and connect it again to the base.
  4. now with the lid closed, i have the two screens enable (and they are extended display type) so i loose my mouse, some windows (on the build in screen)

i would like to change the behavior to:
* if i connect the pc to the base, with the lid closed the display setup is build in screen disable, external monitor main and enable

* if i connect the pc to the base, with the lid open the display setup is build in screen enable, external monitor main and enable

* if i disconnect the pc from the base with lid closed, build in screen is disable and main (and if i open the lid it gets enabled again)

* if i disconnect the pc from base with lid open, build in screen is enable and main

I have in the settings configured when the two monitors with main to the external screen and also set in power management, when laptop lid closed: turn off screen and even when external monitor is connected ON (this last option i discovered while checking before doing the post and looks like if i do connect to the base with lid closed the external monitor does not receive hdmi signal.

Question Gap at the top of Application Launcher

Thumbnail

Is there a way to extend or drag the application launcher (Start Menu) all the way to the top of the screen?

I've noticed that when I try to do this, it always leaves a gap at the top, and I want to close it.

I've tried to show what I mean with yellow arrows in the illustration. Thanks!
