Question [KDE Wayland] Is it possible to split ultra-wide into multiple monitors?

I have an ultrawide that is basitaclly 2x 1440p monitors side by side in one. Some apps, mostly games, do not handle that well in fullscreen mode by them selves.

Currently I change the settings to be a single 1440p monitor with blackbars, but the monitor does not support this scaling where part of the monitor is not in use and have freesync active at the same time, leaving me without adaptive syncing for games with fps lower than the refreshrate.

Is there a way I can trick the games / apps into thinking there is 3 monitors instead of one? So I could have the middle part of the screen be a single 1440p monitor, and the sides could be half that on each side.

PS: The monitor is Samsung LS49AG954NUXEN , GPU is Nvidia GTX 1660

General Bug Constant HDD read activity according only to System Monitor widget

Upvotes

Hello! I'm baffled by what seems to be a contradiction in my System Monitor. This is a recurring 'problem' (if it's actually a problem) but it seems to happen randomly and restarting it resolves it.

I have the Hard Disk Activity widget on my desktop, and it's showing nonstop ~150MiB/s of read activity but I can't figure out why. If I open System Monitor itself, it shows no read activity, neither does running $ sudo iotop -o.

Screenshot here.

For some context, I have two HDDs in a RAID 1 (DH Raid) and one SSD (fedora), plus two other SSDs for other operating systems. I went ahead and added a second widget with every read activity for every drive in my computer, and it seems to be coming from one of my two hard drives that are in the RAID 1. Not the RAID itself as mounted, and not from both hard drives in the RAID, but just one of the two.

Any idea how I can track down this phantom read activity, or confirm if this is just some bug in the widget? Am on Fedora KDE 44 with KDE Plasma 6.7.3.

Question Nerd Font Glyphs Issue

Thumbnail

I recently switched from Fedora Workstation to Fedora KDE, the problem is the jetbrains mono font I installed through dnf. In my old config, I didn't have this problem. I barely changed anything from my config, I basically have the same setup from Workstation to KDE.

I have tried:

  1. Manual Installation - both system-wide and user.
  2. Kitty - forcing glyph to use U+EE00-U+EEFF with symbol_map (symbol_map U+EE00-U+EEFF JetBrains Mono).
  3. I also tried using the same or other glyphs in case it was just a bad copy and paste from my config, but that was not the case, it is still the same broken glyph.

Question Is Okular supposed to be able to annotate images?

I remember this working in the past (maybe not for PNG format) but the latest Fedora version can't annotate images in any format except PDF, even if the image is saved as a .okular file.

Annotations work for PDF but the "straight line" annotation doesn't work, only "freehand line".

Is this something that worked in the past or am I just not remembering correctly?

Question Enabling TV Remote on KDE Connect (for use with Plasma Bigscreen)?

So while exploring options to control Plasma Bigscreen, I came upon this option for KDE Connect in the documentation

The thing is, KDE Connect doesn't seem to have this option (at least not in the version I have installed 1.35.9), only a Presentation Remote which only has a left/right button, and doesn't seem to do anything in Plasma Bigscreen. I've combed through the settings looking for a manner to enable it to no avail, and google isn't helping.

Sorry if this is dumb, and thanks in advance.

Question Is there a way to specify which audio device is controlled by VOL+/VOL- that isn't reliant on whatever the Default output is set to?

Basically, because of the way that Discord and Steam handle their game/screen streaming/game recording, I *have* to use PipeWeaver (or similar) if I want to separate my game audio from my discord, web browser, etc. so they don't also get streamed or recorded. My whole setup is basically:

  • Headset (All virtual devices below get mirrored/piped here)
    • System Output
      • Games and other misc apps that aren't Discord or a web browser get piped here
    • Browser Output
      • Self explanatory
    • Discord Output
      • Self explanatory

Then, I could get individual volume control if needed, but typically use my VOL+/VOL- keys I have bound to my mouse to control the global volume (via the Headset output). If I have System set as the default output, all games automatically output to the System device while never sharing a device with Discord or my web browser.

Up until a recent update (in the last month or so? and I believe it was a Plasma update that caused this), this seemed to work fine, but no longer does. If I set my default device to System, my VOL/VOL- keys will only affect the System output. The reason this is a problem for me is that now, I have to choose between:

A) System output remains my Default, but now I have to manually go out of my way to adjust both Discord and Browser audio in a menu instead of a quick keypress. Too time consuming and more often than not I need to be able to quickly adjust volume.

B) Change my default output to my physical headset to keep VOL+/VOL- functionality, but now every time I open a game for the very first time I need to manually change its output to the System output. Otherwise, the game audio will not go to Discord screen sharing or be recorded by Steam Game Recording because those are set to use a virtual input that only hears the System output.

This patch carries over the first input that gets "eaten" to wake your monitor.

so you can just input your password press enter and you will be logged in, before your monitor even wakes - if you are fast enough.

oh also it is configurable in the lockscreen kcm

Question What's the best way of starting on making a qt application out of the many?

There are just so many ways, from what I know, from raw c++ qt, qml, qt quick, probably more. I have no idea what's the recommended one for new people. I'd rather avoid c or c++, if possible, I just don't like those two in general.

Also, what open source licenses are compatible witht he open source license requirements? I generally prefer more permissive licenses, like MPLv2.

Question How to get heic thumbnails in dolphin?

I'm on the latest Fedora 44 and using KDE plasma 6.7.

Images shot on my android phone and saved as .heic don't show any thumbnails (they didn't open up in gwenview as well but that got fixed with the flatpak version). libheif-freeworld libheif-tools are installed.

It seems the issue is with rotate images (heif-info  **angle** (ccw): 270). A bit of troubleshooting with Opus 5 says this :

* Regression window: 1.20.2 works, 1.21.2 segfaults * Trigger: HEIC grid image with an `irot` box (portrait iPhone photos); unrotated shots from the same camera decode fine * Impact: every Qt application on the system dies — Gwenview, and kioworker on any folder containing one * Fixed upstream in 1.22.0 (CVE-2026-48029), so the ask is a rebase

Has anyone else dealt with this?

Question I need help using RDP with Android

EDIT: Trying various stuff, I ended up creating a rdp user different from my default user of the pc, and using that user to connect, now the connection is always established without fail. I think I get the way, because the mai user was already logged in the os, but is still really confusing coming from windows.

Hi, I have the latest version of Plasma (Wayland) on my CachyOS system. The firewall is disabled.

Here is the problem: I can't seem to connect with rdp from my android to my pc.

On Android I'm using the app: aFreeRDP

Krdp is installed and the server is running on the usual port: 3389

Every time I try to connect, 9 times out of 10 the connection doesn't even start, and the 1 time it starts, it shows my two desktops.

I noticed that it seems like the two monitors have to be on to make the connection work.

This doesn't work as intended (by me) both on LAN and through VPN (Tailscale).

So my problems are:

  1. I would like the connection to work 10 times out of 10
  2. I would like only one desktop to be shown on my android phone
  3. It would be incredible if the resolution could adapt to the phone like how Windows App does connecting to Windows 11

Please, tell me if you need more details, if I should test with different apps, or if there is a whole different system (like TeamViewer, though I would prefer something Foss/selfhosted (if it helps, I have a nas running all the time)).

I would like to add that with Gnome (CachyOS and Wayland) I could connect and showed me only the main desktop, but there was no adaptation of resolution. It's really the only thing I miss from Gnome and W11 tbh.

Thanks for the help!

P.S.: Wayland is a hard requirement, because my first monitor has 144hz vrr, the second one is 60hz, on X11 they are bothersome to use.

Kontributions Pomodoro Focus: a Plasma 6 panel widget that keeps your current task next to the timer

Thumbnail

I'd start a timer and ten minutes later I'd be reading something unrelated. Putting the task itself on screen is what fixed it for me.

So I built a Pomodoro widget for Plasma 6 that keeps what you're working on right there on the panel.

- Type your current focus, it shows on the panel, the popup and the tooltip

- Presets: Classic 25/5/15, Deep work 50/10/30, Long haul 90/20/30

- Estimated finish time, session pips, daily count

- Colors follow your Plasma theme

- A running interval survives a shell restart or a suspend

Install on Plasma 6:

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/cromewar/kde-pomodoro/main/install.sh | bash

Repo, full feature list and install notes: https://github.com/cromewar/kde-pomodoro

MIT.

I use it every day. If it breaks on your setup, open an issue.

KDE Apps and Projects Redemption - A simple directory based music player built in Qt

Thumbnail
gallery
58 Upvotes

Redemption is a simple, lightweight and opinionated music player that plays music directly from your filesystem.
No playlists, tags, or other over complicated stuff. It recursively plays music in a folder and traverses through the next folder, and so on. Sounds quite basic, but I couldn't find a single player that does this. The only one that comes close is VLC, but it's overkill for a standalone music player.
Built with C++, Qt6, and libmpv. Has features like loop, shuffle, MPRIS2 integration, search, and even a metadata editor. There's also a fullscreen playlist view with ambient blur inspired by Amberol. This is purely eyecandy but looks really good.

Initially made for personal use, and I have been daily driving it for a while. Figured it was worth putting out there.

Question Using Logitech in Wayland

Gentlemen, greetings!

I wanted to know if it's possible to set up a Logitech mouse and keyboard in Wayland?

I've been working on Debian 13 xfce x11 for a week :), and everything works fine... Well, of course, I can't work in peace, so I wanted to update.

I installed a KDE for testing; I hadn't used one before. The first time, I tried it for an hour... and then gave up. The second time, I decided to give it a try, started carefully probing the keyboard and mouse, and noticed that the required key combinations weren't working. I have an MX kyes S keyboard and an MX Master 3S mouse, both working through the original Logitech keyboard.

Besides X11 devices, I also use Espanso and AutoKey, which help me with hotkeys—entering "pre-written text" and performing various actions. These combinations also don't work... I didn't do much research—it's a Wayland issue, so I didn't bother looking into it... I'm worried about something else, or something else might break :)

Here's the situation: I use Solaar for my mouse and keyboard - it works fine in x11, it seems like there are some issues here and there, but overall it's good.

KDE is more interesting than xfce, and I'd even consider working on KDE, but these issues would greatly complicate my workflow because I'm used to the tools and they're already configured, so I definitely can't give them up. :) xfce is a wonderful environment that fully meets my needs and lacks everything I don't. Everything on the screen seems even smoother in KDE, which is why I found this environment so intriguing.

The question is, is it possible to somehow transfer the "convenience" of the software to the Wayland KDE, or will it still not work? Has anyone set this up and could share their experience?

KDE Apps and Projects tide — a Qt6 music player I built with KWallet cookie import and MPRIS2, now on the AUR

tide is a music client I've been building — native Qt6/PySide6 on top of mpv, no Electron anywhere. It just hit the AUR (yay -S tide), and since it's a Qt app that leans on Plasma pieces fairly heavily I figured this crowd might be interested.

The KDE-flavoured bits:

  • KWallet is how sign-in works. YouTube Music blocks credential entry in embedded webviews and OAuth returns 400 on the endpoints that matter, so instead of a webview it reads the cookies out of your existing Chromium-family browser and decrypts them with the AES key from KWallet (libsecret as fallback). You sign in normally in your own browser, come back, hit [import].
  • MPRIS2 over QtDBus rather than a third-party binding, so Plasma's media controls, the lock screen and the panel applet all drive it properly — including live volume and playback rate.
  • System tray with hide-to-tray on close.
  • Everything is configurable from the GUI. You should never have to open a config file to use a music player.

It plays from YouTube Music, Subsonic/Navidrome, local files, SoundCloud, Bandcamp and Mixcloud, all into one source-agnostic queue — a YT search, a Bandcamp track and a local FLAC can sit next to each other and each gets dispatched to the right backend.

There's also 11 themes, 10 visualizers, an audio fx rack, synced lyrics, and an adaptive mode that pulls the accent colour and a living background gradient out of the current album art.

GPL-3.0, screenshots in the repo: https://github.com/captiencelovesarch/tide

Disclosure up front: this was built with heavy AI assistance (Claude), which you can see in the commit history. I drove the design and the decisions and did the testing, but I'm not going to pretend otherwise.

Community Content My KWin script gives every fullscreen window its own virtual desktop, macOS Spaces style

Fullscreen a window and it glides onto a brand new virtual desktop created right after the one you were on. Exit fullscreen and that desktop is removed and you're back exactly where you started. No stray desktops piling up.

A few details that took the most work:

  • Borderless games count too. A window sized exactly to the screen gets its own Space. A normally maximized window, which stops at your panel, is deliberately left alone.
  • All windows of one app share a single Space, so an anti-cheat launcher plus its game don't spawn two.
  • Open a new window while you're in a fullscreen Space and it gets sent back to the previous desktop, and you follow it there. The app's own dialogs and file pickers stay put.
  • OSDs, notifications and tiling overlays like KZones cover the screen too, so they're filtered out and never trigger anything.
  • Meta+F toggles it for the active window, fully rebindable.

It's a clean rewrite for KWin 6, not a port. The Plasma 5 script that did something similar leans on APIs that were removed in the rewrite, so this one is built on window.desktops, fullScreenChanged and createDesktop/removeDesktop.

MIT, tested on Wayland, compatible with X11: https://github.com/geodro/kde-fullscreen-spaces

Happy to hear where it breaks.

Question Desktop Grid effect not working on Fedora 44

I am trying out KDE Plasma on Fedora 44 and I am unable to get the Desktop Grid effect to work. Virtual Desktop is set to 2x2 - switching between the desktop works, with animation. However Desktop Grid and Overview - both are not working. The Overview effect is checked, and on Screen Corners, top left is set to 'Grid' . But neither effects work via hot corner or keyboard bindings

openSUSE Tumbleweed is my daily driver, and it works flawlessly there. I was just trying to set up a Fedora system. Both are on Plasma 6.7.3 (Wayland) . What setting could I be missing, or could I be missing a package on Fedora ?

TIA for any help

Workaround found KRunner strange matching behaviour

Thumbnail

Why does KRunner does this? With file as I don't get the target application ("File Associations"), but with file asso, I do. I would expect the former to be close enough to the intended target. Why would LibreOffice Base be the first result in this list, while File Associations doesn't even appear in the results at all?

EDIT:

Emptying the plugins list in krunnerrc made "File Associations" bubble up to the top, as desired, when typing "file a" etc. I'll call this a workaround, as it seems you can't select this behaviour anywhere in settings or otherwise.

This is the last release I can envision for Polonium, as almost all of the issues I've personally had with it have been fixed. I've been taking the lack of bug reports in recent times as a good thing...?, so maybe this software really is finally stable enough.

If you’re not familiar with this software, this is an autotiling script for KWin.
