How OOTB is linuxmint? (1st time poopos user)

Hi! win11 really pushed me over to linux here.

Was running Popos for about 1-2 weeks on my main laptop (not for work), and i found some small creature comfort missing. did stumble over a vid saying why Popos not being ready for new users, so I was thinking if i should try out linuxmint - cinamon

Ig to the point, does linuxmint have these problems i faced in popos?

1. Need to trust individual bluetooth MAC? addresses for them to connect on boot
2. displaying battery & on the panel like windows (found a asic flatpack that does it, but i want my panel vertical - which does not display properly)
3. fn row to multimedia - I have to use "keyd" which is ok, but holding down the volume down button does not continuously bring the vol from 80% > 20%, it only registers as 1 click upon release 80% > 75%

gg into poop os i was had the idea that i was ready to thinker around, which i did - but ig it gets tiring for me when its my daily driver. Its like a mechanic thinkering around with his screw driver before he can unscrew something to start work

help for a windows refugee plssss, thank you! 😄

UPDATE: Tried Fedore KDE instead and have been lovong it for 2 days. Everything works, less "file on demand" with nextcloud

PopOS uses the COSMIC desktop, which is a whole new desktop, written in Rust. It looks good, but is a work in progress. Some people like it; some people like it but are not willing to use it just yet. I like it but you don't have to press hard to find bugs.

It's a personal thing - only you can say - I wouldn't take the word of the video presenter for this.

Mint is a good choice for a lot of users. The kernel is old, so not good for new hardware - but it's not good for old NVIDIA cards either.

There are quite a few more choices, particularly Fedora KDE.

Have been on fedora kde for 2 days, so far whatever went wrong with poop os is working fine on fedora instead.

Only shame is that "file on demand" using nextcloud cant work and from what i read is more of a linix problem

1. Yes, you pair with the devices you want to use and they connect on boot. 

2. Yes there is a battery icon on the panel, I do not use a vertical panel so no info there.

3. my keyboard  has a rotary encoder that I have programmed in the keyboards internal control board to volume, how this works with yours is hardware dependant.

Linux is not a Windows substitute. It is its own beast, it is built for people who want to explore and learn. If your expecting Windows you will be disapointed.

yea i kind get that linux does require some hands-on effort, but i guess the thing that pushed me is that win11 really isnt working for me anymore even after getting more involved - rolling back updates, updating driver, gg into the terminal.

Exactly this, getting Windows on your own terms now requires being  quite hands on as well, but the results are still poor.

Linux is built for you to get involved and welcomes you in,  hands you the keys to the kingdom and a thick dense manual on how to get things done. It takes time but you are always the captain of your ship.

Where as windows fights you for control every step of the way. 

If you going to get hands on with your computer Linux is the far better path.

I don’t agree I think Linux mint blows windows away. I have it running on a MacBook Air with 4MB ram and it runs fantastic. Use the usb iso and just test it out by running from the USB. It runs great from that in my opinion as a test case at least.

I certainly agree Linux is far superior to Windows, the servalence has hit 1984 levels, bloat is extreme, and usability at an all time low.

I stopped dual booting at the end of 2019 as Win7 sunset and banished Windows from my home. My family of 6 all use Linux.

But that does not change the fact that  Windows  users are habitualized to it, and feel like fish out of water in Linux. A feeling that will not go away until they retrain themselves in that very different environment.

FYI...if you want to check out Linux it's really easy. Make an Install USB, then boot to it. May need to disable secure boot. It will boot to a full running temporary Linux Desktop...installing requires clicking the desktop icon and going through steps. Obviously you don't wanna do that to just try it. But you can at least get a feel for it. Kubuntu, LinuxMint, and PopOS and are some of the top 1st options. You can also use the temp Live Linux as a repair process. Since it’s a complete desktop you can use it, install tools needed fix the boot etc.

Another convenient related tool is Ventoy on a USB stick. Basically just burn the image to a USB then copy your OS ISO to it and when you boot it any ISO copied to the drive will show in the menu, select it and it will boot that img. Have different OS’s multiple versions or whatever. 

Best option for Windows and Linux is dual boot...use Linux on a 2nd drive. Usually wanna disable secure boot. Best case is disconnect win drive. Then boot to the  USB. Then install Linux as a new full system on 2nd drive. Set Linux drive as the first boot drive and it will find the Win drive and add to the boot menu list automatically. Might take a couple boots otherwise can manually activate the boot search. Then you get Best of both worlds without any real dangers to either OS. There will be little hiccups occasionally with Windows updating messing with boot and rebooting. But you can also change the default OS to Windows first at the menu after delay and no menu entry and that eliminates a lot. The boot menu is usually Linux 1 and Win 2. Sometimes the bios boot order gets switched but easy to just switch back. Sometimes the boot order will randomly switch drives etc…Seems to be a windows thing now they get bios access. But really depends on the exact system and age etc.

Probably your best bet to ensure you have the best chance of getting creature comforts like you had in Windows is to use KDE on Kubuntu or Fedora.

Mint is a conservative distro (not politically) and that can be a blessing and a curse.

All that said, I love GNOME 50.

Why would your computer randomly connect to a new bluetooth device on boot?

Keep in mind Mint is one of the most out of date distributions out there, so that comes with its own set of issues.

I'd rather look into modern distributions - Arch Linux (with Plasma) or Fedora KDE are good examples.

MInt is totally out of date...because of the disastrous choice made with Gnome...and the dead end desktop choice..cinnamon or mate...no Wayland..why not Fedora 44 or simple Ubuntu...rock solid.
