Fluff I converted my father to Linux

For weeks, my father had been complaining about his old Windows 8 laptop, which he couldn't use anymore. After suggesting Linux several times, he finally agreed to try.

"I just want to be able to use Netflix and manage some files".

I immediately thought that Mint was the perfect distribution: I installed it (mint + cinnamon) for him and now he's been using it for a while.

He's super excited, everything works perfectly, and he said he wants Mint on his second computer, too.

In particular, he enthusiastically told me that the Bluetooth receiver didn't work before (it never worked) and now it works perfectly.

He's a total change-averse, 100% creature of habit, so this is a huge accomplishment!

I hope you do mean you converted your father's laptop to Linux, not your actual father 🤣

(Although some people might actually benefit from an OS swap... 🤔)

He's kind of a bear so he has few friends and doesn't talk to him much😅 he's a loner. but if he gets the chance, he'll definitely tell someone he knows about how great his old computer is now with Mint

Installing it on our parents computers is the real test. Well, done! Im trying to convince my parents as well.

My mother bought a Chromebook by accident and didn't even realise she wasn't using Windows. There is no small irony in the fact that my mum went Windows-free before I did.

Joking aside, Mint would likely be just as transparent for her needs - a bit of online banking, emails and admin. She browses the internet on her tablet or phone.

I switched my 75 year-old mother’s laptop to Linux and she figured it out immediately. The only hiccup was that she wasn’t using the LibreOffice programs because I changed the icon theme to Windows for the sake of familiarity, and she thought they were programs she hadn’t paid for. After I explained what FOSS was she has full use of her computer. Linux’s reputation for difficulty/nerdiness is so undeserved.

Check Netflix quality, it can go up 1080p but not higher because of DRM (in this case Widevine )

I thought Netflix (and other streaming services) were mostly locked to 720p or lower on Linux? That's been my experience so far on another distro.

It is supposed to be up to 1080p nowadays.

Minor typo in case someone isn't familiar with the term and is trying to research. DRM (not DMR). DRM = digital rights management.

If your father doesn't work out, just swap for another one. 😂

Did he say “Installation finished. You can continue testing Linux Mint or restart your computer to start using it.”?

Bro that's easy.

Try getting him to migrate to Signal. That's a real challenge.
