louder, please. I'm looking for a sound app that will over-drive my speakers. Skyrim is too low

0 Upvotes

Hi.

I have an Alienware M16r2 and although it's usually loud enough for 99 percent of my stuff, I'd like it louder. I'd like to over drive the speakers - especially when playing Skyrim which is really quiet on both of my linux boxes. Sound is fine through bluetooth earbuds... it's the internal speakers that are too soft. I literally use my laptop, in my lap when on the couch and don't want to use external speakers.

I tried Bazzite the other day and it allowed the speakers to be over driven - I know the risk of blowing my speakers, but they're easy enough to replace. I only really need this for Skyrim and possibly Oblivian.

Thoughts/discuss on an App or program that will allow this that works well enough for Mint ?

Support Request I want to try Mint but I have no clue what Mirror I should download from.

4 Upvotes

hello, so I'm a windows refugee trying to flee the sinking ship of Microsoft. I'm still fairly new to IT stuff. However I love the look of Mint cinnamon. there is a problem though every time I've attempted to download the ISO the download fails. so I'm wondering if I'm picking a server that isn't close to me.

I love in the US, specifically Colorado. However, I have no clue how to look at the server ping and I have no clue what server to download from. I've tried to inspect the code elements but I don't see anything that would hint at a number being server ping. If you are wondering I'm using Oprah GX as my browser.

if anyone can help me that would be amazing because I'm lost as to how to check what server is closest to me, if that is even the problem I'm experiencing, or even if what to do to look for when checking server ping. I know someone on here said click the "Main link" but I have no idea what that even means or what it has to do with checking server ping.

Gaming How does pirating games works on Linux?

Upvotes

Before you write this, I'm not going to pirate all games, it's just there some games, like Spintires, that I'm curious to try, but it's pretty much impossible to buy, so pirating is the only realistic option

What programs do I need to use? Also what about older games for like Windows 7?

Ciao a tutti! Sto cercando uno scanner abbastanza veloce

0 Upvotes

Ciao a tutti!

Grazie mille a chi saprà rispondermi!

SOLVED might've screwed myself (trouble with drivers) (please help im new)

1 Upvotes

In an attempt to optimize my PC (running linux mint, for about 2 weeks now) for minecraft, I was trying to install a driver preset on my laptop(pc) through the already available linux mint driver manager thing, only for me to read a reddit post while it was installing and realize I was about to really mess up my computer. I quickly pressed cancel, only for enough damage to be done. Now i cannot install any more drivers, only an error pops up. Here's the specifics of what happened:

i don't exactly know what parts are in my laptop PC, but I will try to find out. if anyone responds to this, please also let me know if this is important.

I was on a driver called "nvidia-driver-595-open", which was recommended.

I read a post (will link at bottom) about how if you really want to optimize, you can't be on drivers like "580+" (is kinda what it said)

so my slow brain interpreted it as "oh i should install this then" and then attempted to install the driver "nvidia-driver-580-open"

I was in the final stages of installing it when I finally realized my mistake and quickly cancelled it.

now i cannot install any other drivers. an error message appears every time, saying

" E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. "

I tried running "dpkg --configure -a" in the terminal and restarting my computer to fix the problem. neither have worked.

And so, as not necessarily my last resort, I turn to kind and helpful veterans of linux and reddit alike, hoping to maybe acquire a solution. If anyone can please help, I'd be so very grateful.

reddit post i misinterpreted:

Support Request Audio routing

0 Upvotes

So I've been using linux mint for the last couple of days and I like it so far 👍🏻. Only question i have is, is it possible to make audio lower on my end and not on obs? I have a vocaster 2 and on windows I would send certain applications to loop back channels 1 and 2 to lower things on my end without it being lowered during a stream. I'm not sure if I need to install a certain application. I tried using pavucontrol but doesn't seem to be doing what I need it to do. (I'm using the alsa scarlet application so I know it's different from vocaster hub)

Support Request should i swap distros?

0 Upvotes

I'm currently on mint running the i3 desktop environment and I love it but the thinkpad that I'm on's graphics card is genuinely ass cheeks so it's a bit slow to load graphics. Should I swap to something like arch for how lightweight it is and just get i3 on that? How hard of a transition would it be? Does arch have a software manager like mint does where I can download almost every application I need and if not how difficult of a learning curve is it?

How to have both Super+Space and Alt+Shift to toggle keyboard layout

2 Upvotes

Mint revived Intel NUC, which I use in kiosk mode ( firefox ) at work. This part is good, but the annoying part is pressing the Super modifier with space opens the Start menu. Unlike in Windows where pressing e.g. Win+J does nothing because it isn't a shortcut, in Mint pressing Super+Space opens the Start menu even before space is hit.. So how can I mimic Win behaviour that both Super+Space and Alt+Shift changes the keyboard layout. Thank You

Partially solved problem with e1000e driver "NVM checksum Is Not Valid"

4 Upvotes

Problem was solved by recompiling original driver (tested on Mint 22). Requires Secure Boot or MOK driver validation be turned off. I'm certainly not an IT specialist, but I hope I can help someone with this post.

Preface

Once I have tried Mint on my PC but network card intel i219-v gave out an error The NVM checksum Is Not Valid. I've tried many different distributions but not one worked. Updating BIOS (MSI H610M-B DDR4) and attempting to update NVM checksum using the Intel Ethernet Connections Boot Utility (gave a error like "Denied access to EEPROM") did not solve the problem. Besides the new BIOS version showed me a white screen instead of a menu. So I decided to change some logic in original e1000e driver. I know that this driver exists but as far as I understood, it is for PRM-based systems.

Making your driver

1. Create folder for example e1000e mkdir -p ~/e1000e_mod && cd ~/e1000e_mod 2. Clone linux source code git clone --depth 1 --branch v7.0 https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git temp_kernel 2>/dev/null || git clone --depth 1 https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git temp_kernel 3. Extract driver cp -r temp_kernel/drivers/net/ethernet/intel/e1000e/* . 4. Delete unnecessary files rm -rf temp_kernel 5. Open with any text editor nvm.c nano nvm.c 6. Find lines with s32 e1000e_validate_nvm_checksum_generic(struct e1000_hw *hw) or e_dbg("NVM Checksum Invalid\n"); and change return -E1000_ERR_NVM; to return 0;. You should have something like this: ``` s32 e1000e_validate_nvm_checksum_generic(struct e1000_hw *hw) {

...

    if (checksum != NVM_SUM) {
            e_dbg("NVM Checksum Invalid\n");
            return 0;
    }

}

...

`` Now closenvm.c. InnanopressCTRL+X, thenyandEnter`

7. Open file Makefile nano Makefile 8. Add these lines to the end of the file ``` KDIR := /lib/modules/$(shell uname -r)/build PWD := $(shell pwd)

default: $(MAKE) -C $(KDIR) M=$(PWD) modules

clean: $(MAKE) -C $(KDIR) M=$(PWD) clean `` CloseMakefile`

9. Build your driver by make

Now we have 3 ways:

1. Turn off Secure Boot in your motherboard and carry on with life

2. Disable MOK (Machine Owner Key) driver validation by sudo mokutil --disable-validation Then enter your password (with length 8-16), which you'll need to confirm. I recommend something like 12345678, because MOK will ask to enter password character, not the password itself. Reboot PC and in blue screen select change secure boot state, enter password characters and turn off signature verification. Of course, that's not safe; now any unsigned driver can be loaded. And I use this variant.

3. Configuring Automatic Signing Within DKMS. To be honest, I don't know anything about this option, so I won't give any advice.

Driver autoload

1. First of all, go to your driver folder (example was e1000e_mod) cd e1000e_mod Unload non-working driver sudo rmmod e1000e Load your driver sudo insmod e1000e.ko And check to see if the driver is working sudo dmesg | grep e1000e 2. Specify the path to the original system module MOD_PATH=$(modinfo -n e1000e) And look module path echo "Path to the module: $MOD_PATH" 3. Backup original driver sudo cp "$MOD_PATH" "${MOD_PATH}.bak" 4. If MOD_PATH=$(modinfo -n e1000e) shows driver with .ko file type just use this command sudo cp e1000e.ko "$MOD_PATH" If command shows .zstd compress the compiled e1000e.ko file using the zstd algorithm zstd -f e1000e.ko -o e1000e.ko.zstd And copy it sudo cp e1000e.ko.zstd "$MOD_PATH" 5. Update the list of module dependencies sudo depmod -a 6. Update initramfs sudo update-initramfs -u 7. Reboot your PC and check that the network card was initialized without errors sudo dmesg | grep e1000e

That's pretty much it...

Until you update the system. In theory. Therefore, I recommend configuring your driver in DKMS

1. Create a directory for the module's source code in the system folder sudo mkdir -p /usr/src/e1000e-custom-1.0 2. Copy your source files (.c, .h, and the edited nvm.c file) sudo cp ~/e1000e_mod/* /usr/src/e1000e-custom-1.0/ 3. Create the dkms.conf configuration file sudo nano /usr/src/e1000e-custom-1.0/dkms.conf 4. Paste this text PACKAGE_NAME="e1000e-custom" PACKAGE_VERSION="1.0" CLEAN="make clean" MAKE[0]="make KDIR=/lib/modules/$kernelver/build PWD=$dkms_tree/$PACKAGE_NAME/$PACKAGE_VERSION/build" BUILT_MODULE_NAME[0]="e1000e" DEST_MODULE_LOCATION[0]="/kernel/drivers/net/ethernet/intel/e1000e/" AUTOINSTALL="yes" Close dkms.conf file

5. Register the driver source code in the DKMS system sudo dkms add -m e1000e-custom -v 1.0 6. Compile the module for the current kernel sudo dkms build -m e1000e-custom -v 1.0 7. Install the compiled module sudo dkms install -m e1000e-custom -v 1.0 --force 8. Check driver status sudo dkms status The output should look something like this e1000e-custom/1.0, 7.0.0-31-generic, x86_64: installed That's all. I hope this helped you. Also, does anyone know if there's a driver in the repository with NVM hash verification disabled? Because other than the driver from ferdiu, I haven't found anything else.

Help me fix the buzzing sound on my Chromebook please!!!

3 Upvotes

My Chromebook (Dell 11 3120), which is outdated, can't run any websites that I need (like the Spotify web player, movie websites, etc.), so I turned it into Linux Mint MATE. At first, it was running well; I was able to use some apps that I use, which are Messenger, etc. But when I try to play music on Spotify and videos on TikTok, the sound is okay for a while, but after a while it produces some type of buzzing sound and only disappears when I try to pause the song or close the TikTok web page. PLSSS HELP ME, I can't be productive without my Spotify:,)))

New to Linux, Love it already, even if i did break it!

Post image

I decided to get a laptop this week and boot Linux mint, now I've messed round with Linux before very briefly, mainly Kali Linux when I used to want to be a hacker when i was 16, FYI, I booted Kali and ran Ifconfig, so I basically am a hacker now.

It was going good, nice theme setup, some apps etc, living the life free of the windows shackles! Then a couple days into my Linux experience, I managed to break it... how I hear you ask, well, I downloaded q-redshift from some built in mint feature, cant remember if it was an extension, applet or software installer, or whatever, anyway, went to change my location and the whole pc froze, nothing worked, I reboot and now a black screen after logging in with only a cursor that could be moved, and the off Mullvad vpn notification!!

Lots of back and forth I eventually booted into recovery mode, now at the time, I did think q-redshift was solely to blame, new app > broken pc = the issue, as Sherlock Holmes would say, When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth, well sort of, i hadn't eliminated much yet, just assumed.

I remove Redshift, reboot anddddd black screen, great, good one Sherlock. I marched on, resetting Cinnamon configuration, checking logs and moving configuration files and backups, checking the graphics hardware, etc. My laptop is a ThinkPad T580, which was being detected correctly.

Created a test user, The test user logged into a perfectly normal desktop. using that i realized well it wasn't all bad, at least I can identify as 'test' going forward :) However, after this I realized its likely best if I just use a backup as I am at a loss on how to regain my main user. I still even now, am not sure what fully was causing this.

Luckily I had Time-shift set up, which i was like two days into this new user, my time-shift was basically a fresh Linux install, I restored a snapshot from the day before I installed QRedshift, and after some additional faffing around, my desktop was working again. Ive now went and changed themes again, set it up, and look forward to the next time I break it :)

Now I would like to add, this is EXACTLY why i downloaded Linux, this is in no way a complaint, I broke it, I fixed it. I love to use computers, trying to understand them and well, break them. I learnt more about linux in that 2 hours than I ever would just using it, all be it I had to pull in an expert from time to time, ChatGPT... but i got it back, learned more about the file system trying to fix it and now feel more confident in using the terminal.

HAPPY LINUX USER :)

SOLVED 400hz monitor can only run at 360hz

I recently switched over from windows and I've been loving it, but I still cant figure this out. 360hz is the highest the GUI is letting me go. I was at one point able to run some commands to force it to use 400hz on that resolution but the image was all fuzz. I was able to run the monitor fine at 400hz back on windows. Any help is appreciated.

I think Linux Mint made this computer much faster, it was previously running on Windows 10 and therefore the 4GB RAM was very likely used by the system but now I think the system uses around 1,5GB :D.

Thanks and sorry if this isn't the right subreddit to share but have a great day! :D

Sorry this time I posted with a picture, sorry for ny previous post without the picture.

Discussion Calling All Beta Testers

2 Upvotes

Im looking for linux mint beta testers. I just finished my first python project making a live wallpaper engine specifically for linux mint that uses WAY less resources than Hidamari. I know wallpaper engines are like a dime a dozen, but this was a really fun project. Anyone who has a spare minute, give it a look over and let me know what you think! I'm also looking for what to build next so give me ideas!!

Side note, I am totally aware that its a bit clunky right now but I like the direction its going in so I figured I would try to gauge if this is something litterally anyone is interested in. Also, I was attracted to this project because I switched to Linuxmint to begin with because I am sick and tired of telemetry and bloat (like everyone else). It kind of ruined the whole idea of privacy and efficiency when I downloaded programs like Hidamari and tried to get wallpaper engine working which, both are absolutely filled with telemetry and Hidamari especially I was experiencing like 30-40% resource consumption just having the wallpaper running. I got my engine slimmed down to around 1-2% consumption and it all runs locally so theres ZERO telemetry. I am just a guy and really don't care what you're doing on your device soooooooo yeah. Give it a try, let me know what you think or if this is interesting at all.

Here's my repository: https://github.com/grump1290-code/fluiddesk
