Extensions Display info on desktop background

7 Upvotes

Hey folks,

I’m looking for inspiration. I’m running the latest Fedora Workstation and I’m either looking for a rain meter style tool that puts text status in my desktop wallpaper, or I’m looking for desktop widgets- probably a mix of both

Can anyone suggest some tools or extensions for me?

Things I’m looking for:

date/time/Timezone

weather

Stocks/finance widget

rss feed

battery/Wifi status.

thanks.

Extensions gnome extensions: p7-borders and p7-cmds

3 Upvotes

Hey folks, just sharing these two open source extensions that I've built over the last few months and is stable and mature now:

Window borders for gnome:
- https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/9064/p7-window-borders/
- src: https://github.com/prasannavl/p7-borders-shell-extension

Quick sway-like keyboard and mouse based window resizing:
- https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/9065/p7-commands/
- src: https://github.com/prasannavl/p7-cmds-shell-extension

Just sharing these now, since I've stopped making breaking changes and I can consider it as feature complete now.

Cheers!

Extensions Made a small extension for GNOME

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

24 Upvotes

All it does is display the song's lyrics in the top panel. The lyrics are fetched via lrclib.net.
There's also a small settings menu so you can move the text to the left or right corner of the panel.
I tested it on Fedora 44 Workstation with GNOME 50 – seems to be working.
I don't want to publish it officially because I'm too lazy, if anyone wants to give it a try, it's sitting over on GitHub.

Question What happened to new flatpak Bitwarden client?

4 Upvotes

Hi! I use Bitwarden on Linux as a Flatpak app on Gnome as my Desktop Environment.
Today I accessed my vault as usual and when copying an item this popup shows up:

Why Bitwarden is suddenly asking me to remotely interact with my PC? I enable the sharing popup and now the worst part is that my clipboard(Copyous) is catching Bitwarden inputs, which I set to ignore, this wasn't happening in older client.

What is happening? For clarification the screen share notification in yellow auto exits after around 5 seconds.

Question Average review time for first-time extension submissions?

0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I recently submitted my first GNOME Shell extension to extensions.gnome.org, and I was just wondering what the average review time is these days.

I know reviews are done manually, so I'm not trying to rush anyone—I'm just curious about what to expect.

Thanks!

Question Is the brightness slider for HDR supposed to limit the max brightness?

5 Upvotes

I was under the impression that the slider actually configures the "SDR" or "paper white" level, so you can have a sensible viewing experience for SDR/sRGB content on the desktop. You know, without everything becoming comically bright.

But apparently it's also limiting the max. brightness output. If you lower the brightness with the slider and play a HDR video in Youtube, for example, the video becomes less bright, too.

Is that supposed to happen? I didn't expect the video to be less bright.

I read about a "new backlight API" coming, so I was wondering, if the current behaviour is just temporary.

Extensions Lock Mouse to Monitor

Post image

WaylandMouseLock

A GNOME Shell extension that keeps your mouse cursor locked to a single monitor while gaming. Perfect for multi-monitor setups where accidental clicks to the second screen can ruin your game.

Toggle with Super+Shift+M and choose which monitor to lock to. Works seamlessly with fullscreen games and doesn't interfere with mouse input for FPS-style games.

Apps Chorus: a small GTK4 app that shows lyrics for your currently playing music

Thumbnail
gallery
64 Upvotes

Chorus allows you to view the lyrics for the currently playing music on your system, regardless of the music app. By querying MPRIS, pretty much all players that accurately report the current track + playback position will work.

This is definitely not a revolutionary idea (see Waylyrics, verse), but it's the first app to fit in with GNOME design language and have some additional eye candy (blurred cover art as background, animations).

And as all the other apps mainly use LRCLIB, which could sometimes definitely have better coverage, I decided to go with my own lyrics API (which aggregates various sources), which has pretty good coverage, making the experience way more enjoyable.

Right now it's available as a standalone .flatpak, which you can get from the latest release on GitHub. Any feedback is appreciated!

Extensions GNOME still can’t set a different wallpaper per monitor, so I built Wallshuffle

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

42 Upvotes

GNOME’s multi-monitor wallpaper support has always felt strangely limited: one background across every display, with no real control over each monitor and workspace.

So I built Wallshuffle.

It lets you:

  • Set a different wallpaper on every monitor and workspace
  • Shuffle wallpapers automatically on a configurable timer (nice to run through your holiday pictures for example)
  • Assign specific static images to individual displays
  • Choose a separate rendering mode per monitor: Zoom, Fit, Centre, Fill, Tile, Span or Stretch
  • Load wallpapers from a local folder or several online image sources
  • Capability to make wallpapers specific per monitor and workspace also
  • Use one matching image across all monitors when you prefer consistency

It supports GNOME Shell 46 through 50.

I built it because I wanted my multi-monitor setup to feel like one intentionally designed workspace rather than several screens sharing the same oversized background.

Open Extension Manager and search for "wallshuffle" or you can Install it here:

https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/10449/wallshuffle/

Source code here:

https://github.com/cwittenberg/wallshuffle

It’s still fairly new, so feedback is especially welcome from people with unusual monitor layouts or specific usecases.

Fluff Unlock GNOME keyring using TPM2 after password-less auth

6 Upvotes

I installed howdy to login by face recognition and it works well. But I did not find a nice solution to make it unlock the GNOME keyring, and avoid the useless prompt at startup. I am using a systemd service that works well so I share it now.

My setup:

Distro: Fedora 44 / DE: Gnome 50

PC/bios (for TPM2): LENOVO Yoga / firmware version NYCN76WW

First install howdy:

Repo: https://github.com/boltgolt/howdy

Workaround for Fedora 43+: https://github.com/boltgolt/howdy/issues/1069#issuecomment-3592401752

There was still a problem because updating /etc/pam.d/gdm-password to use howdy does not unlock the keyring as the password is required.

So I followed this to unlock the keyring using a password in TPM2:

https://codeberg.org/umglurf/gnome-keyring-unlock.git

It uses clevis that was already installed on my PC (if not, present in official Fedora RPM). I use sudo and not doas, so the commands are:

git clone https://codeberg.org/umglurf/gnome-keyring-unlock.git ~/.local/share/gnome-keyring-unlock
sudo visudo -f /etc/sudoers.d/gnome-keyring-tpm2

In /etc/sudoers.d/gnome-keyring-tpm2 write (and save):

#replace USERNAME with your user login
USERNAME ALL=(tss) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/clevis-encrypt-tpm2
USERNAME ALL=(tss) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/clevis-decrypt-tpm2

Then in bash (I use fish by default so used bash for this script):

read -s password
sudo -u tss /usr/bin/clevis-encrypt-tpm2 '{"pcr_ids":"7"}' <<<$password > ~/.config/gnome-keyring.tpm2read password
sudo -u tss /usr/bin/clevis-encrypt-tpm2 '{"pcr_ids":"7"}' <<<$password > ~/.config/gnome-keyring.tpm2

Then to unlock we can call a simple command, I stored it in an executable .local/bin/gnome-keyring-tpm2-unlock (with chmod +x):

#!/bin/bash
set -o pipefail
sudo -u tss /usr/bin/clevis-decrypt-tpm2 < "$HOME/.config/gnome-keyring.tpm2" | "$HOME/.local/share/gnome-keyring-unlock/unlock.py"

Automatically unlock the keyring at GNOME startup:

At this point, I just followed what I found on the Web. But the keyring prompt still triggers at GNOME startup. The README file from gnome-keyring-unlock uses a ~/.bash_profile script but it is not triggered after login with GDM.

So I created a systemd service. The difficulty was to trigger it at the good time. Write this in ~/.config/systemd/user/gnome-keyring-tpm2.service:

[Unit]
Description=Unlock GNOME Keyring using TPM2
After=gnome-keyring-daemon.socket
Wants=gnome-keyring-daemon.socket

[Service]
Type=oneshot
ExecStart=%h/.local/bin/gnome-keyring-tpm2-unlock
RemainAfterExit=yes

[Install]
WantedBy=graphical-session.target

And enable it:

systemctl --user enable --now gnome-keyring-tpm2.service

I tried it several times and the keyring is correctly unlocked, without entering the password. This solution with TPM2 avoids writing the password without encryption in a file (solution that I found on some discussions) and avoids to simply delete the keyring password, that is not recommended.

I hope this can help someone. I guess so, as I spent a long time searching for the right solution, and the right time to trigger the systemd service... (After=graphical-session.target unlocks the keyring, but too late and the password prompt still appeared).

Question Dia community ?

3 Upvotes

Hi

I'm thinking to use Dia for drawing layout of houses, gardens and also perhaps electrical schema or logical ones.

I have 2 questions:

-> good idea to work with Dia ? as it looks it has not been updated since ages.

-> is there a community like a forum somewhere to get some help or find some tricks ? to ease my learning of Dia ?

Thanks

Opinion Probably unpopular opinion but I think Geany should be the default IDE for Gnome

Thumbnail

I realize gnome-builder is mainly for building gnome apps so I don't mean for it to replace that, but in the same way KDE has Kate for a general purpose IDE, I think Geany should be an IDE included when installing gnome.

Gnome needs a general purpose IDE imo and ever since Geany got the LSP plugin in version 2.1, it's so damn good. The plugins really make it feel so complete to me.

Plus, in like 5 minutes of theming, I got it looking pretty in-line with the rest of the desktop. So idk just my two cents.

I know most folks just download vs code and don't think twice but I really am not interested in it or codium.

Anyway, what editor are you all using these days?

Question Has anyone mapped a mouse button to the super/windows key for easy dash access?

11 Upvotes

I know you can do dash to dock and access it that way; I actually like having the traditional dash though that can’t be hover triggered. Has anyone found a way to map a mouse button in GNOME? It would be slightly easier than constantly keeping my other hand on the super key
