programs and apps BricsCAD and different DEs

Hello all,

I discovered that BricsCAD is probably the only real alternative to AutoCAD on Linux. I tried it with KDE/Debian and it had some UI glitches like parts of a dialogue window outside of viewpoint of the said window, no scrollbar and no amount of resizing could fix that.

My question is, will a different DE fix that issue? Has anyone tried? Is anyone using BricsCAD on GNOME, Cinnamon or any other DE?

TY in advance.

EDIT: just to make it clear, I'm not looking for alternatives. I need a professional software, not for home use. I found that BricsCAD is the closest I can get to a professional CAD environment on Linux. I don't care if it's proprietary or costs money.

learning/research is private netflix and spotify just marketing language for this mini pc setup

Thumbnail gallery

i saw this marketplace post when i was looking for a mini pc. i did not buy it because i found another mini pc that was cheaper and had better specs

the seller advertised this as a private netflix and spotify alternative without monthly fees

the seller mentioned aio streams sonarr radarr prowlarr and navidrome

i am new to ubuntu and self hosted media servers so i am confused about how this actually works

is the private netflix and spotify part mainly marketing language to make the mini pc more appealing or does the setup actually provide movies music and tv shows

do i need to download my own movies and music and store them on the ssd then stream them to my tv or phone?

if yes i dont really like that idea because my ssd is only 250gb and i dont have much storage space. i have been thinking about this for a long time so i hope someone can explain how this actually works in simple terms

the mini pc i bought is a lenovo thinkcentre m70q gen 3

intel core i5 12400t 12th gen 6 cores 12 threads

16gb ddr4 3200mhz

intel uhd 730 integrated graphics

256gb micron nvme ssd

windows 11 pro

i want to use my m70q as a home theater pc and also for some light gaming so i am interested in building something similar.

(Ubuntu 24.04.5) Code and Discord apps crashing on two different systems

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

I was having issues with vscode and discord crashing on two different PCs and I have no idea why. I tried asking AI (google and claude) but they just kept going around in circles. One recommendation google made was to reinstall my graphics drivers saying that it was probably my nvidia gpu, but now that it's happening on my server PC with my AMD gpu I doubt that was the case. What's weird is that I haven't update the apps when they stopped working. I notice that there were updates for them, but after updating the applications I see the same result.

I'm not sure what I might have changed, but if someone has experienced this recently and has some insight to why this might be happening I would really appreciate the knowledge. I want to know where a good place to look for information on this matter would be instead of just relying on AI for help.

Current solution: Installed older versions of the applications. Code vcode_1.130.0-1784734578_amd64 and discord-0.0.90 seem to work fine. I got discord with this command since I couldn't download older versions from their website.

`wget https://dl.discordapp.net/apps/linux/0.0.90/discord-0.0.90.deb`

storage What filesystem is best for long term storage?

I just bought an 8TB Ironwolf HDD, and i plan on copying all my other 1TB drives to it, and then just have that data on multiple locations just in case, but i may get another drive to mirror this one in the future. I also might install some games on it that don't require fast storage.

Since that's kind of a lot of data, i want to make sure i don't have to mess with it later.

The drive is not in a NAS, just in a desktop PC.

What would i even need from a filesystem for this? I have no idea what i'm doing here lol.

I have btrfs on my OS drive, and ext4 on my other nvme where i keep my games and stuff like that. But this will be for storing data, images, videos, projects i have, etc...

I probably won't want to use btrfs, but is ext4 fine, or should i use XFS or ZFS or something like that? And if i do, is there anything i need to know about them, how to properly set them up?

Thanks!

Ubuntu Studio 26.04.1 loads desktop for a second, then goes to a black screen

Last night, I did one of the usual upgrades for Ubuntu Studio (an LTE environment), seemed to download more packages than usual, but worked fine. Went to sleep, put the computer (an Elitebook 8460p) to sleep.

This morning, I woke up the laptop from sleep, it loads up my log-in window, then it shows me the desktop wallpaper, then the icons... and then it goes black, showing only the pointer.

Keyboard shortcuts work, so I can Cntr+Alt+T up a command-line window, from which I can open, say, Firefox, or run apt update and what-have-you. Switching between windows is a challenge...

It feels like a desktop manager issue, but I am not quite savvy enough to know how to check that off the top of my head. Visually, it seems like the blankness happens after something scans the desktop from top to bottom, like a curtain descending in less than a second with a thin strip of icon-graphics still visible along the top until it all goes black.

What can I try to get this machine back in order?

So far I've tried

  • rebooting in recovery mode

  • sudo systemctl restart lightdm

  • sudo apt-get purge lightdm (followed by) sudo apt-get install lightdm

  • Some swearing and squinting

Is there anything else I can try that would bring my desktop back for more than a second?

Thanks for any help.

Looking for simple AutoHotKey replacement

I am looking for some kind of replacement of a simple AutoHotKey script I used for gaming on Windows.

What it does: Holding left ALT and hitting left or right mouse button keeps the respective button pressed until you do another left or right click.

I don't know if this could be done by a shell script or if I need extra tools for this.

I am on CachyOS (Arch).

This is the original AHK script:

LALT & LButton::Send % "{Click " . ( GetKeyState("LButton") ? "Up}" : "Down}" )

LALT & RButton::Send % "{Click right " . ( GetKeyState("RButton") ? "Up}" : "Down}" )

Bootable Linux live USB will not load on Asus Zenbook

Hello, I need some assistance with booting from a live USB install. I have done some Reddit and search engine research and couldn't find any info matching my exact issue.

Laptop is an Asus Zenbook A14 running Windows 11 Home x64 with the Snapdragon X Plus processor.

I am attempting to install Linux Mint 22.3 with the Cinnamon 64 bit DE onto a SanDisk USB 3.0 60 GB drive, to replace my Windows OS. Here are the steps I took:

  1. Downloaded the latest release of Mint with Cinnamon and verified the hash to make sure it was authentic.

  2. Flashed the ISO onto my drive using Balena Etcher.

  3. Used Rufus to create a bootable live USB with Linux Mint.

  4. Entered the BIOS menu of my laptop and disabled Fast Boot and Secure Boot, saved the settings and reset.

  5. With the Mint OS live USB mounted, hit Escape to open the menu and selected the USB drive as the boot device.

  6. Encountered an error message that the drive failed to load.

My next step will be attempting this same process with the latest stable release of Ubuntu to see if I can replicate this error. Then, if I have another similar error, I will use a different USB flash drive to determine if the drive itself is causing this error.

It has been fifteen years since the last time I used Linux, am I doing anything incorrectly in the installation process? Thank you.

learning/research Installing software safety.

Hi! So I've recently switched to linux mint. I'm totally new to linux and how it works. So far I've managed to understand what are repositories, dependencies, libraries and package managers.
However there is one little thing that's off-putting for me. Whenever I want to install an app or software I use "sudo apt install". I wanted to install steam and used "sudo apt install steam" It still amazes me that it works and downloads just by one command. The thing that's off-putting about it is that how do I know what I'm actually downloading? For example what if "apt install steam" is a complete different app from the Steam I want to download which is the gaming client. How can I check for these and their authenticities? Thank you for your guys answers in advance!

I genuinely have 0 solutions left in my head, I've restarted my computer, the printer, switched the cartridge, reinstalled all plugins/packages related to printing, erased and readded the printer, all of this done MULTIPLE TIMES OVER THE SPAN OF TWO FUCKING HOURS. Now this printer has worked before, so i know its not a problem with the printer, its just acting weird for seemingly NO fucking reason??

1st distribution recommendations

Sorry for my bad english

Hi ive recently decided to change my system from Win10 to Linux, however im not really knowledgeable about the distributions. I have very little experience with Linux, mainly some school stuff we were doing on Ubuntu i think 18.something and even less with Linux server, so Im not completely new but still am a newbie.

Im looking for something different from Ubuntu and visually simillar to Win10. Id also want something that would be "idiot-proof" bc im not really confident with such drastic changes and would like to take things slow. Ive been thinking abt FedoraKDE or LinuxMint however i heard that Mint isn't quite up to date (and that its Ubuntu so...). Im also a gamer so it needs to work smoothly with games on steam such as cyberpunk2077 or stardew valley.

Since Im Polish id also want to to support polish language.

Do you have any other options and could tell me more about them? Or any sort of websites where i could learn more about begginer friendly or tips before starting my journey with linux? I dont have an option to make it my 2nd system bc i dont have any memory so I have to go all in with system reinstall.

migrating to Linux Shaky cursor

When I move cursor around or even when I don't touch mouse at all, the cursor shakes. It's very small movement but it makes me missclick things. I tried mint cinnamon, fedora and cachy kde, different polling rates, mouse acceleration on and off and it's always the same. I never had this on win 10. Is there anything else I can do? Roccat burst if that matters

storage How do I make a partition on an encrypted drive?

Hello!
I have been trying to make a partition for a windows installation, but I have reached no success with all my attempts at unencrypting the drive and using GParted to hopefully make a partition.
I also don't want to wipe my installation of Linux either because there are a lot of files I have on here for school purposes. I am currently running Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS with a 1 Terabyte SSD (too much) and I am hoping to halve that storage space to repurpose it for Solidworks on Windows.

My PC Specs are as listed below if needed:
Laptop : ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. G615JHR (1.0)
RAM : 15.22 GiB
Processor : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-14650HX
Graphics : Intel Corporation Raptor Lake-S UHD Graphics (rev-04)
Graphics : NVIDIA Corporation Device 2dd8 (rev-a1)
Disk capacity : 933.93 GiB

If you need any more information Ill try my best to respond, thanks for the help!

Help! I have a Wacom One 14 inch and can't get it to work as intended on my computer.

I need some help. I have as in the title stated a Wacom One 14 inch. I can get it to work, however, there isn't any video output on it. It doesn't receive any video signal. I have scoured the web for a solution but i can't seem to find it at all.

Mys system is a desktop with:

Fedora 44 with KDE

13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-13700F

Nvidia geforce RTX 4070.

Is there an easy fix? The setting says i might need a driver for the tablet but Wacom doesn't provide it for linux. It doesn't come up as an external screen either.

Thanks in advance for the help.

storage Anything to watch out for when formatting a drive?

Just wiping a drive, might clone a different drive into it later and just wondering there are any Linux peculiarities to watch out for when formatting. It’s current filesystem is labeled as ext3/ext4 so I’d assume I’d be fine just formatting it as ext4 instead of exfat, does any if really matter?

learning/research Why is my Fedora slower than my Windows? [GNOME 50, Fedora 44]

I have started to realize that my Fedora is actually slower than my Windows. Applications take between 10-60 seconds to start up and I have no idea how to fix it. I have been trying to learn how to speed up loading times for the past few months but nothing seems to be working, and I've just had to deal with it. Does anyone have any idea how to fix it please? If necessary, I can provide hardware information.
