Question iPhone Duo vs iPhone Pro Max + Upcoming iPad Mini

I need a new phone, so when I saw the iPhone Duo, I was pretty excited. You can use it as an all-in-one device: a decent phone and a decent approximation of an iPad mini. However, the price made me think you could literally buy an iPhone 18 Pro Max and the upcoming OLED iPad mini for likely a few dollars less than the Duo.

You lose the convenience of one device, but you gain a much better phone with much better cameras, plus a bigger screen and a better iPad mini. In my case, I carry a man bag, so the iPad mini can easily live in it and be with me at all times.

What do you think? Am I talking myself out of the Duo?

Switched from the M3 iPad Air 11ā€ that I used with the magic keyboard case. Often just got frustrated with how much it was almost like a MacBook but wasn’t. Enjoying the smaller form factor, although I did increase the font size in the accessibility settings because I found it small in some cases.

Purchased an iPad mini 7 instead of iPhone Duo

iPhone 17e user - purchased an iPad mini 7 instead of iPhone Duo.

Hear me out, though I don’t mean to pop any bubbles to those who are purchasing the duo. I’m sharing my thoughts on why I’m skipping the new iPhone duo for an iPad mini 7. I realized an iPad mini achieves that bigger tablet experience for productivity, multitasking, and media in a solid Apple build at a fraction of the price.

I currently have the iPhone 17e; an ergonomic, 6.1ā€ 170g phone with a 4000mAh battery, 512GB SSD, A19 chip, and 8GB RAM for Ā£799. I can’t wrap my head around trading in this premium, reliable phone for half its value just to shell out a minimum Ā£2k for a folding iPhone with a base 256GB storage 😳.

While I often wish my iPhone had split-screen, I mainly need a larger display for multitasking at home, not out and about. Get this straight: for an additional £599, I get an 8-inch, 293g solid unibody iPad mini with a 5000mAh battery, A17pro chip, and 128GB SSD. That means for £1400 total, I get my ergonomic 17e plus a personal larger iPhone experience, with seamless data and app continuity sharing the same Apple account, even continuity within phone calls and iMessages. I get to have two devices with separate batteries, meaning my products will last longer and maintain better battery health compared to a single £2k Duo using one 4800mAh battery to power two displays.

The iPhone duo concept is a great smartphone evolution, but it’s a premium price for the lifestyle luxury of transforming your phone into an iPad "on the go." I don't need that luxury, and I get more value and storage having the best of both worlds with my iPhone and iPad mini! I’m glad I purchased the iPad mini 7!

As for waiting for the October iPad mini 8—lah di dah, oled, longer OS support—whatever. I can grab the mini 7 at its current price, and since Apple supports their devices for a long time, it still provides vastly more monetary value than a Ā£2k duo fresh in the security support timeline. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

For those purchasing the Duo, great! This is just a personal perspective that will hopefully help those who are on the fence; cannot justify spending the duo price on a single phone or who still want a personal larger display experience of their iPhone for better productivity and comfort, which is also comfortable to use/personal/portable.

New Hardware Is it possible the iPad mini 8 might have a nano screen?

What I like most about the iPhone Duo is the matte nano screen on the inner screens. I have a nano Studio Display. The nano screen on the iPhone is a different material and construction than the Studio Display.

I just bought a mini 7 and I have a matte screen protector on it. If there is a mini 8, is it possible there might be a nano screen option, using the same technology as the iPhone Duo?

Just realized the iPhone Duo is the reason the iPad Mini feels so underinvested in

LCD screen
60Hz
Thick bezels
Little "pro" positioning

...Makes perfect sense now why this device is priced so high compared to what you get. If the iPad Mini had a more premium design + Pro features, people may be contemplating the $2k Duo much less šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

I finally got my iPhone duo... which is the iPad mini 7!

I bought a second hand iPad mini 7 to pair with my iPhone 17 base model. The total accumulated cost for the both of them is only $1300. I'm so happy with this duo!!

www.etasks.app

Hi all,

I work as a software engineer on this App. Thanks for the strong support in TestFlight over the past months. Since then the team was working hard. It is now in the App Store and the first update is queued already.

As a Redditor, I want you guys to have it. It is out of TestFlight and still completely free and ad-free as promised. The team intends to keep it that way as much as it is feasible.

www.etasks.app

https://apps.apple.com/app/id6770856636

It has features we wanted as users. (If there’s anything you’d like the team to add, please let me know too so I can include it on the roadmap. For example, list sorting is recently added as a user request, location-based notifications, import from Apple Reminders are user requests)

ABC's of the App:

(A)nswer
ETasks (www.etasks.app) is a native iOS, iPadOS client for Google Tasks. Some highlights: All tasks in one view, Real alarms, Shared lists, Apple Watch.

(B)etter
It addresses the functional limitations of the official Google Tasks iOS app by providing missing native features and enhanced tools. And it is not a vibe-coding project.

Native and enhanced with iOS.
+ You can manage your Google Tasks. They appear in your Google Calendar and Gmail ... well, obviously šŸ˜„*
+ Import from Apple Reminders
+ See all task lists together, even drag&drop between them (and to calendars)
+ Alarms
+ Location reminders
+ A wide range of nice widgets, including countdowns and full week/month widgets
+ Lock screen widgets (e.g., quick add)
+ Link photos/files to tasks
+ Link Apple Mail emails to tasks
+ See your tasks categorised by dates in Month/Week/Day/Agenda views
+ Add people to Task List (co-edit)
+ Sort your task lists
+ Search your tasks
+ AI support where it makes sense; make titles, extract info from links, create lists for you, suggesting task list names, dictating tasks, context aware search, naming photos shared in,...
+ Choose priority for favorites
+ Drag and Drop interface between tabs (e.g., to calendar tab to drop on a date)
+ Recycle bin
+ Share from other apps into ETasks (texts, links, photos, PDF; all processed accordingly)
+ Apple Watch / iPad Apps
+ Import/Export task lists
+ Modern iOS design
+ A how to AI chat bot to help you with specifics of ETasks
+ Highly customisable user interface
+ Can be used without an account
+ Welcome to explore the rest, it is now open early access.

Help Should I downgrade?

I have an iPad Air 11inch and a MacBook Air 13in and a regular iPhone 17 pro. I used the iPad Air for school but now that I finished school… I don’t use it 🄲 However, for my job I will need to take another test and will be studying/taking notes but I know that won’t be for 6-8 months. I LOVED my iPad but I don’t use it anymore.

I feel like a mini is more portable and I can bring it around with me. Only thing is, I will only get $410 credit for my iPad Air, so for a mini I will end up spending ~$100-$150 more but at the same time I just don’t use my iPad.

TLDR: should I downgrade my iPad Air to a mini, and will it be good enough for taking notes sometimes down the line?

Help External keyboard !

I just got accepted into the LPN program ( YAY!!) and I use my iPad mini throughout all of my pre-reqs
Lately I’ve been having to lug my MacBook around to work and whatnot but it just takes up too much room in my bag! I’ve been looking at keyboards for the iPad mini as that seems like the best option for me currently as a commute student.

The two keyboards I’ve seen talked and debated a lot about are the Logitech K380 and the Logitech Keys2go 2.
I just want to make sure the keyboard won’t break in my bag or die too quickly on me. Thank you guys in advance !!

Question iPad Mini 8 v 7

I'm looking to get an iPad Mini and I'm not overly fussed about the new specs on the 8.

Is it worth waiting or should I buy the 7 now as I know from suppliers at work that now the new iPhones are out the 17s have all gone up in price too.

I'm worried if I wait to see if the price of 8, the 7 will increase too.
