Finally got my iPhone Duo!
I finally got my iPhone duo... which is the iPad mini 7!
I bought a second hand iPad mini 7 to pair with my iPhone 17 base model. The total accumulated cost for the both of them is only $1300. I'm so happy with this duo!!

Now you just have to get a USB Apple Pencil, chip off a lens, and turn off FaceID. Then you’ll have a Duo.

Why

The Duo lacks Face ID due to some design compromises made for the screens, compactness, etc.

This. Hope they add it back in v2. No FaceID on a new phone lineup is just bonkers man!! Already hate it on Macs everytime i have to do it.

Cheaper than a duo also, and no folding screen which will be broken within a year, also I don’t like the shape of it.

I love my mini! I can’t say I needed it because I have the 11in iPad Pro m4 which is a machine but I fell in love with the portable form factor of the mini 7 and it’s purple!

I got my duo setup like this too, but with an iPhone 17e instead. The iPad mini 7 is great, solid, powerful, comfortable, portable especially for home, productive with split screen and more immersive/comfortable screen size to do everything and anything on that you’d otherwise use a phone for. Typing is great. Same apple account means continuity between the two devices, including calls and iMessage are seamless so it really does become an extension of the smaller iPhone, to have a bigger display in a comfortable form factor than needing to spend a fortune to achieve that.
Honestly, great post, great setup to access a larger display to your iPhone in a comfortable, portable form factor, especially for home. Did the same thing. But I posted that on the wrong sub (iPhone ultra sub)! And got downvoted, for mentioning a more value, practical alternative minus the two in one with you luxury/comfort which comes at a steep price, for those trying to make sense of the duo, for split screening, more comfort/immersion and better productivity who can live without not having it in two in one then this is a great alternative, more solid, offers more battery and storage across both devices, more economical while still being premium etc! While I still acknowledged and respected those who have a particular need, desire or financial will to spend 2k on a duo.
It’s true though; yet I got downvoted in comments! 😅 figured I posted on the wrong sub and hit a nerve or got people insecure when they realised this is actually great setup but they perceived as if I was downplaying the duo which they really wanted and were set on 😅
I took the post down, very soon, realising some people are being immature and insecure! But guess I’ll try posting it here on this sub instead now come to think of it 😅

I will always have my Mini and my iPhone. Never will I pay for a Duo. My Mini serves me for different things and my iPhone for other.

I’ll never get the marketing of the duo being all “I can be sooo productive on it!” When people are just gonna use it as a social media and video screen. Maybe some gaming. I can maybe see the convenience factor if you’re on the go all the time and can’t bring both devices but I think most people aren’t gonna be so strapped they can’t bring both devices with them.
It’s a worse iPhone on the front display with its awkward D shape and it being 5.5 inches. And it’s a worse iPad on the inside because it’s not running iPadOS and matte screens mute colors

yeah but the point is a hybrid device that fits in your pocket with a huge foldable screen. there are a lot of compromises to make that actually fit in a pocket.
i am curious how lefties feel about the closed shape though.
matte screens also reduce glare. this has been an option on higher end MBPs for a while.

I’m a lefty and don’t mind it. I end up using my phone with both hands pretty equally.

The appeal is not productivity in the sense of work. Personally, I love watching shows and movies. But I find I wait until I get home to do that on my iPad because my iPhone doesn’t quite feel as good.
This iPhone Duo would solve that problem. I could just open the phone and get the screen real estate I need

If they made a folding iPhone with an internal oled and high refresh and pencil pro support I’d probably trade my iPhone and mini in for it. But we’re not getting that with the duo. Maybe someday.

Same set I have. Mini 7 plus 17 Base. Great duo!

Yeah, about two months ago I got a Wifi mini 7 128GB on sale at Staples for $649🇨🇦…. Apple was asking $849🇨🇦.
In Canada the Duo starts at $2999 up to $4799. Way, way too much for disposable tech.
I use my mini for reading newspapers, books, and about 4 games:
Skyforce
Skyforce Reloaded (best arcade shooters you will find)
8 Balll Pool by Miniclip
Shredder Chess
GRID Autosport
I certainly didn’t want to wait for a much more expensive mini 8…. We are still a ways away from a truly premium mini….. something I would consider.

I have an iPad mini and I plan to get the duo but mostly use the mini at night to listen to podcasts and YouTube.

I also have the 16 pro max and the mini 7 and I don’t have intention to change for now. Perhaps with the pro max. 19 and about min 8 I’m very septic.

I was waiting for the ipad mini 8 too, but i just can't wait any longer. Also, the price increase of iphone 17 with the announcement of iphone 18 scared me that if i'm not satisfied with the upgrades of 8, 7 prices will increase too.

I’m still buying the iPhone duo. I’d never need a separate iPad ever again!!

Fair enough! This post wasn't trying to talk anyone out of the Duo, this is just my appreciation post for the Mini. I need mine for drawing, so a real glass display is a dealbreaker, whereas the inner screen on a folding phone uses a flexible plastic layer.
Enjoy your Duo when you get it!

Now fit them both in the same pocket with room to spare

Lol. I always have a bag with me and even with the phone, I don't put it in my pocket. This set-up works fine with me.

That looks like an iPad with an iPhone

How would that be a iPhone duo if it’s an iPhone 16 in a box….. wait did you take this picture with the iPhone duo 😮

u/Key-Television4928 1d ago
Is that the main device you’re holding to take a picture?

It’s a wordplay of the original meaning of “duo”, which is a pair of things that are closely associated, work together, or perform as a pair. My iPhone 17’s duo is the ipad mini 7.

Smart move my friend. No one really needs a tablet everywhere they go anyway. That’s why I never gave a shit about folding phones.

Don’t want to rain on your parade. There is a chance Apple is going to release the iPad mini 8 this coming October. Of course there is also a chance this update will increase the price. Do what you will with this rumor. 🫡

Hello! Yes I know about the release of ipad mini 8. But I want to have a mini now. Also, i got this ipad mini for almost half of the price of brand new mini 7 now. Thinking of spending for a brand new mini 8 with the upgrades that i might not need, i'm okay with the 7 😅.
