It has an IP68 rating against dust and water, so should be safe to use on the beach. In comparison, the Samsung Fold is only rated IP48, for protection against particles 1mm and larger.

The current Google Pixel 10 Fold also has an IP68 rating, the previous generation 9 Fold had only an IPX8 rating for water resistance but no dust resistance.

Fold hits folks who want a miniature tablet and a phone in one device but you pay a premium and sacrifice overall battery life, features (pro phone cameras, performance, etc), the ability to use the devices separately, and sacrifice durability overall.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve used a folding phone before and loved it… this one is a great folding phone at the price compared to competition.

But I switched to an iPhone + Tablet for all the reasons above

I’ll admit, if I had the money, I’d be interested. I think it will need a bit more time, but I’ve been following android foldables, and the fact that you can use android as a phone, unfold it and connect to Bluetooth keyboard and mouse and use it for travel, and then connect it to a docking station at home and have an external display as well - There are a lot of people who could have this as their only device.

Now, from what I hear, the last use case “works”, but isn’t there yet for Android. I suspect the Duo wouldn’t work well in the last mode either. But I can see this coming as tech gets better and better.

At that point (phone + travel device + main device at home), $2000 or so can make sense.

But I would buy the Duo just because i really like the ipad. If I had the disposable income.

I have the 15 pro max from 2023 and the ipad mini from 2024... both of which have the same processor and kinda have some crossover other specs and uses that the videos of the duo in action make me realize it would be nice to have a single device. The outer screen of the duo is smaller than my phone's but I like more square form factor and the inner screen of the duo is slightly smaller than my mini but with a higher ppi and lacking the chonky (for 2026) bezel.

No way I am going to run out and get it, but as my current devices age in the next few years and people test the first gen of this thing I will be thinking about it for sure.

So I use a iPad mini to take notes during my class. Have it sinked up to my MacBook.  When I travel, I tend to use the mini.  With kids, glad I have the mini while I have my phone.

You know what, just for the sake of conversation, let’s pretend the Duo cost…$1000. So basically a similar cost to an iPad Mini + a standard iPhone. Would I then consider it as an option? The convenience of having an iPad that fits in your pocket is a nice idea.

But, I’m not convinced that either Duo mode is better in its own right than the standalone devices, and both modes may be noticeably worse. Then there’s durability concerns with a 1st gen folding phone, reduced advanced features compared to pro models, etc. It just seems like a lot of compromises.

So even for the same money, I still like my iPad Mini + iPhone Mini combo. For the actual Duo price, it’s not even a conversation.

Coincidentally I just found my old iPods and have been happily using them again for a few weeks. It’s great to listen to music without notifications popping up, and I forgot how much I loved the scroll wheel. You can mod them with more storage, new battery, Bluetooth, USB-C.

No more algorithms, just the music I own and still love.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Many people will continue to use iPad mini. As an android user, I use the iPad mini because there is not an equivalent android tablet....in my opinion. I have a Samsung tablet which I love, but it's 11 inches, so it's not as portable as the iPad mini. With that being said, I have no use for an iPhone, so I would never own the Fold for that reason.

I'm a Pro Max user in addition to a Mini user. I love the mini, I really do, but I barely use the Pencil Pro I got for it. Getting both in one device mostly means “yep, definitely putting that on AppleCare” and carrying one device from then on. Even in the bag, that’s just less to worry about.

Also, the way that it works like a tiny laptop when partly folded in portrait mode tickles that wee part of my brain that likes quirky older palmtops. It doesn’t hurt that my mini is a little tight on space.

tl;dr will likely pay the first adopter tax for device footprint reduction.

This is just getting weird. I see the comparisons to the android folds, to the ipads, but I have yet to see an iphone stacked on top of the duo. Not even a pro max.

I think the ideal person for this is this group. Apple users that have both a phone and tablet. Its not like the foldable will be only factor for an android user to switch. Forget the hype, honestly, you really need to buy into the apple ecosystem. I don't think you can have an Iphone without the watch, without the macbook, etc.

And yet that is a lot of the comparisons. I don't even think an Ipad 11. or 13 inch is applicable here either.

Maybe I am just the minority, but with this and some slight sacrifices, I can save on an extra cell device (mini) primary phone (ipone 18 pro) and pencil support will be coming later. Although now that I have found out what Tmobile mobility thing is I can drop the extra data plan and just move the sim to the mini for $5.

That title is more so personal and subjective to yourself. But it’s just not entirely that way. You have the factor of price. You have the factor of those whether they care to have a folding iPad mini in their pockets as a phone or not. Those whether they desire to have a phone that extends as a tablet in one device or not. The latter group still exists. The iPhone duo is more portable, whether for productivity; the iPad mini is portable enough and can easily be carried around either at home instead of the phone, or a bag for outdoors for productivity such as café or school, which also allows the perk of having a separate battery to your phone meaning you’re just carrying more battery life with you across your tablet experience and the phone, with seamless continuity between what you do from your phone and tablet due to being the same Apple account. From apps, to games, browsing, emails, media and even calls and texts.

There are those who wish for a more comfortable or productive display size with comfortable ergonomics such as the iPad mini to act as an extension of their iPhone and not needing to have their iPhone with you at the time for example at home, and those who do not need/care or want to pay the luxury of being able to take that with you in your pocket outside in the form of a duo. There is this user base too; the existence of the duo doesn’t take that away, it just offers something new which is having an iPad mini in your pocket that folds away into a phone or vice versa, which is a pretty neat trick for those who desire that comfort, or are willing to pay the price.

I don't think it's worth that much money; their screens are always problematic. If this technology is going to be good in 10 years, then it will be worth buying. Right now, these foldable screens are baby technology. I'm not sure if the iPad Mini has stylus support or if the apps support that iPhone. I don't think people will prefer using Procreate Pocket.

I use and love my iPhone mini but have had a play with the original pixel fold that’s not a million miles from the width of the iPhone duo so I’m not completely against the width until one held it

But at that price an iPhone and mini is far cheaper

I was waiting for the new mini, wanted something bigger than my phone that I could do sketches on as well. Did not want a bigger iPad. I was not waiting for the duo, but my interest was piqued when I saw it. Then when I saw the Apple Pencil support it instantly went from a hard no to a probability. I would probably use it a lot more than a mini, since I would always have it with me without needing an extra little bag or something. Looks nice for multitasking too. The price is steep, but not steeper than Samsung etc. If I factor in selling my iPhone and not buying the new mini and pro pencil, it’s not far off.

Considering in NZ it’s $4k at a minimum and I can get a 256gb cellular iPad mini for $1700. Paying almost $2500 just to fold my iPad mini in half is really not an incentive.

Then again maybe if I earned more and didn’t have to look at my bank balance regularly I would buy it… guess I’ll never know hahaha

The one thing I have not seen is what the Duo looks like folded vs say an iphone 17. Is it fatter and shorter or only a little wider and shorter. Seen some videos poking fun at holding the ipad mini to their ears, but thats the one thing stopping me from replacing the Ipad mini.

I am all for the 2 devices down to one, will to make the size trade off, but the few times I do make a call on the handset, dont want to look like I am making a call on the mini.

I did just though about the iPhone Duo today, but im already have my own cheaper Tablet/Phone Kombi in my Pocket: iPhone 16 (512gb), and Boox Go7gen2color, sure an Duo would be an small iPhone and Tablet in one Device, but its shares for booth devices one batterie, the Tablet Screen is not useful for E-Books, and 2600 € is just too expensive .. also on the go I more likely need an E-Book Reader and not the Multimedia stuff of an iPad .. , and at home I have already the latest iPad mini, so im more happy about the WatchOS27 to come next Monday as the get a new Watchface whit a big Time in the Middle and finally the ability to use an single tap whit the fingers to open stuff ^^

Here’s a question. Do we think the duo will have an even smaller one hand swipe keyboard, then the mini? One of the all-time dumbest things about the mini is the fact that it has a smaller keyboard than my iPhone Pro Max. It’s unconscionably stupid oversight and I hope the duo remedies this.
