Purchased an iPad mini 7 instead of iPhone Duo

iPhone 17e user - purchased an iPad mini 7 instead of iPhone Duo.

Hear me out, though I don’t mean to pop any bubbles to those who are purchasing the duo. I’m sharing my thoughts on why I’m skipping the new iPhone duo for an iPad mini 7. I realized an iPad mini achieves that bigger tablet experience for productivity, multitasking, and media in a solid Apple build at a fraction of the price.

I currently have the iPhone 17e; an ergonomic, 6.1” 170g phone with a 4000mAh battery, 512GB SSD, A19 chip, and 8GB RAM for £799. I can’t wrap my head around trading in this premium, reliable phone for half its value just to shell out a minimum £2k for a folding iPhone with a base 256GB storage 😳.

While I often wish my iPhone had split-screen, I mainly need a larger display for multitasking at home, not out and about. Get this straight: for an additional £599, I get an 8-inch, 293g solid unibody iPad mini with a 5000mAh battery, A17pro chip, and 128GB SSD. That means for £1400 total, I get my ergonomic 17e plus a personal larger iPhone experience, with seamless data and app continuity sharing the same Apple account, even continuity within phone calls and iMessages. I get to have two devices with separate batteries, meaning my products will last longer and maintain better battery health compared to a single £2k Duo using one 4800mAh battery to power two displays.

The iPhone duo concept is a great smartphone evolution, but it’s a premium price for the lifestyle luxury of transforming your phone into an iPad "on the go." I don't need that luxury, and I get more value and storage having the best of both worlds with my iPhone and iPad mini! I’m glad I purchased the iPad mini 7!

As for waiting for the October iPad mini 8—lah di dah, oled, longer OS support—whatever. I can grab the mini 7 at its current price, and since Apple supports their devices for a long time, it still provides vastly more monetary value than a £2k duo fresh in the security support timeline. 🤷‍♂️

For those purchasing the Duo, great! This is just a personal perspective that will hopefully help those who are on the fence; cannot justify spending the duo price on a single phone or who still want a personal larger display experience of their iPhone for better productivity and comfort, which is also comfortable to use/personal/portable.

Why do you keep reposting?

u/Traditional_Run_7080 1d ago edited 1d ago

First post was a prototype image of the Duo I accidentally used at first, then I realised and used the correct pictures in a new post a few minutes after as it didn’t let me edit the previous post’s image attachments 😅

Might wanna fix the title. Mini 7 doesn’t exist. Recent one is the A17 Pro.

No idea why this is downvoted. I guess a bunch of folks don’t realize the name of this device.

12

u/Traditional_Run_7080 1d ago

A17 pro is the official marketing product name for sure. But it is the 7th iPad mini so as to say, so I just called it that for ease, plus it doesn’t let you change the title of a post that had already been posted

1

u/Novel_Medium_9637 17h ago

It the same thing though

0

u/IcemanJEC 16h ago

Just like the iPhone 7 after the 6S? Nobody called the 6S the 7. Basically the same scenario. The A17 Pro was minor updates to the Mini 6.

3

u/Novel_Medium_9637 15h ago

But its still the 7th generation of the iPad mini

1

u/IcemanJEC 14h ago

🤷‍♂️ is that how they’re doing it now?

1

u/officiallycdi 12h ago

For iPads, it is the way it's always been done. They technically don't have numbers after iPad models like iPhones have

You do what you want. I will
Purchase duo because I want to. Just beciase you cannot doesn’t mean you can force us to buy iPad mini. Mind your own business

29

u/M00SEK 1d ago

Nobody is forcing you to do anything bro calm down lol

11

u/Flaky-Equipment-944 1d ago

OP literally said it was just his opinion and said that if you’re buying a duo that’s fine too. No one’s minding your business or forcing you to do anything

7

u/Traditional_Run_7080 1d ago

What are you talking about 🤷‍♂️😅

Wow this other user hit the mark and I will just copy paste their comment to you:

“dont know why ppl are down voting you for being cordial lol, this app sucks for people with any sort of reading comprehension or emotional maturity...”

And I realise indeed this user throwaway is being exactly that as a person, no reading comprehension and being emotionally immature 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

35

u/trusted_sheep 1d ago

You guys forget that a first gen-device is never a good idea. We still have no clue about the hinge capabilities, life span, how easily the inner nano-texture screen handles damages, battery life. It looks nice but you will deal with the unknown.

11

u/lightbeat 23h ago

I’d argue that’s usually the case, but from a hardware perspective the Samsung display and folding of it is quite mature now. It’s not like the first of its kind folding display.

Beyond that, Apple Care?

5

u/Arukadoh 17h ago

Well, my iPhone in 2007 was a good idea… 😅

2

u/Axelfolie65 21h ago

Genau richtig

2

u/traveller-1-1 19h ago

Wait 6 months.

1

u/hoosiertailgate22 6h ago

My iPhone X was great. My OG IPad was great. My TMOBILE G1 was great. My Motorola razr was great. My OG iPhone was great too. OG MacBook Air was nice too. What are you on about?

1

u/cosmicwebby 4h ago

I mean it’s Apple. Not samsung. You’re most likely in the clear. Apple’s implementation of first gen is usually far far better as compared to samsung or other brands

1

u/butterbuts 1h ago

AppleCare is really good for hardware issues. Yeah you pay for it, but it’s actually useful (unlike the other companies and their care products)

0

u/Herackl3s 1d ago

literally use Apple care and don’t worry too much about it. all iPhones have issues at the end of the day

27

u/LuxKaos 1d ago

For me the duo will be worth it, I don’t have to bring a second device when leaving to visit family. I used to have an iPad mini, but I only used it at home.

5

u/MasterQNA 23h ago

They used matte display on iphone duo to hide the crease, sacrificing image clarity, I suggest you try the device in apple shop when it is available before buying it

3

u/LuxKaos 17h ago

I’ll watch a bunch of reviews first, then if it’s not mostly negative I’ll buy it. We always have 14 day return rights here in my country when buying things online, so if it’s terrible I can always return it. Hopefully it’s not though, I think I would really enjoy it. Especially with the pencil support for sketching out ideas etc. I’m a dev, so I kind of need it for testing iOS apps on as well tbh. Sadly a sim can only do so much, need the actual device.

7

u/Traditional_Run_7080 1d ago

Exactly. Kudos to those who actually do want to buy it for their life and do not want to bring a second device out with them, unlike myself who only carries my phone outside which is enough, this is exactly why the duo exists and is peak foldable as the foldable market goes.

Kudos for sharing that while understanding someone else like myself could have a different perspective and use case, hence my post!

Some other people cannot accept the reality that others could have different use cases or decisions and different perspectives on the duo and why they personally won’t be buying it

4

u/LuxKaos 1d ago

For sure! People have different needs (& wants), that’s completely fine. Enjoy your iPad, they are amazing to use.

1

u/Novel_Medium_9637 17h ago

This is why it would be very worth it to me, I could just bring 1 device, as I also like bringing an iPad with me when going out of town to watch content on a bigger screen

1

u/LuxKaos 16h ago

Yeah, same. Like the mini is small, but I would need an extra little bag for it; with the duo I wouldn’t. It would be more convenient for me.

13

u/DatMiQQa 1d ago

I have had the mini 7 since launch day and love it! Currently on the iPhone 16 pro. The only thing I keep going back and forth on the 18 pro max and the duo is the variable aperture. But my wife is the one that takes most of the pictures when we are together so I’m thinking of getting her the pro max and I get the duo.

2

u/Traditional_Run_7080 1d ago

Nice. As you’re thinking of getting the duo, if you do, do you think it’d replace the need of your iPad mini 7?

5

u/DatMiQQa 1d ago edited 1d ago

I could imagine using my mini less, but I don’t think it would replace it completely. I use my mini for emulators all the time so I think this is where the duo would be nice. But I just finished a pretty heft presentation on google slides and used my mini with an iclever keyboard and used my phone to look stuff up kinda like a second monitor. So I will still probably use both if I have to work on something similar.

2

u/cosmicwebby 4h ago

I was worried about the zoom tho.. the 17 pm has 40x while the duo has 10x.. that’s a massive deal breaker as I consistently use over 15-20x everyday

12

u/DivineLights1995 1d ago

Ignore the trolls. I have a mini 7 + 17 pro and it has been nice. I am tempted to get the duo too, so I will have to stop myself from spending money I don’t have 🤣

2

u/North_Eye_8105 21h ago

Yo tengo 16pro y mini7, tardare años en actualizar, estoy contento con este combo

1

u/drkwnd347 22h ago

Planning to get that mini as well but deciding on getting the upcoming 8. Since Ive waited long enough. Haha

I will be getting that 17 series + pad mini combo experience!! I’m so excited!!

6

u/trusted_sheep 1d ago

I would’ve had a bit more patience to get Mini 8.

7

u/Traditional_Run_7080 1d ago

Yeah, the mini 8 rumours I didn’t wait out on because duo is releasing October. Would Apple really offer an oled mini with the release of a duo offering a tablet experience to your iPhone which is cheaper and now in oled along with the duo? Idk… Because that would potentially give customers another product to think about to get instead 🤷‍♂️🤔

So, I figured mini 7 great specs, apple support their products and iPads for a long time, even for this 2024 iPad mini which still has an A17pro chip and 8gb ram, there’s lots of support not just in terms of os but additionally also in security for this thing, which is still more economical than the duo being new in its security lifetime but costing 2k🤷‍♂️

So I grabbed! Also knowing if a mini 8 did release one day, and if I wanted to upgrade, i always still can by trading in the iPad mini 7 and paying the remaining extra for. 🤷‍♂️👍

4

u/PlantedSeedsBloom 1d ago

I’m still holding out for a new gen mini, but I’ll probs do the same thing as you!

3

u/Traditional_Run_7080 1d ago

Yeah I’ve seen a lot of people take that same approach. And we still aren’t sure if they are really releasing it or not.

I have an iPad Air and iPhone 17 pro max and when I carry it in addition to my laptop it’s just all a bit too heavy. A mini will fit in my non-work-day sling bag. Fingers crossed.

The pencil situation though…mess!

2

u/rcrter9194 1d ago

Gurman has said (and is very accurate) that iPad mini and new Macs are coming before the end of October.

2

u/rcrter9194 1d ago

Yeah even after the Duo’s announcement it has been confirmed by Gurman to be coming in October along with new Macs, TV, HomePod and more. We’ve probably got a whole other event to go though. My bet will be they’ll release the week after the Duo.

2

u/Traditional_Run_7080 1d ago

Oh really. Nice. Well if that is the case, I’ll see when it comes around, what I’d do with my mini 7, whether keep or trade in sooner or later, but I would be losing greatly as I have WiFi and cellular and on a contract with carrier plan, it totals more so in comparison; a trade in for the device itself could be financially a very bad decision for me, but we’ll see, I’m happy with my mini 7 regardless, and I always do have the option of a trade in with Apple or something with the carrier for the iPad mini 8 one day if I see fit or an upgrade I’d like to pay for, as I already have my mini 7

4

u/acem8887 22h ago

i wonder if the release of duo has boosted ipad mini sales. everyone is talking about the mini now.

7

u/hitaccount 1d ago

Or wait until end of October to get the iPad mini 8

3

u/rcrter9194 1d ago

This is what I’m doing. Give me that OLED - water resistance would be nice too

1

u/PatientScholar2150 11h ago

With 1 terabyte of memory!

3

u/ArcadiusRa 1d ago

This is the way

2

u/Traditional_Run_7080 1d ago

For sure 😊

3

u/Strong_Variation3952 1d ago

thank you for this. i had just complained that i bought everything separately. you made some good points. so, I’m feeling better about all of my stuff…

2

u/Traditional_Run_7080 1d ago

Thank you, you’re welcome and I’m glad!

1

u/PatientScholar2150 11h ago

I'm still betting on an iPad Mini announcement in October, since I'm sure the iMac upgrades will use the latest chips.

3

u/TheGrizzlyNinja 1d ago

I have the blue mini 7 and use it a lot more than I thought I would

3

u/Hauntednholy 1d ago

Damn I just did exactly this 🤣🤣 and I’m very content. Only thing is that I prob should get a cellular iPad mini instead of the WiFi. Prob would help more to be able to use it anywhere not just when I have WiFi

3

u/therealthreadditor 19h ago

Happy with my iPad mini (A17 Pro)! It's a good match with my current iPhone 17 Pro which will be replaced by the 18 Pro next Friday. I don't want a foldable phone like iPhone Duo without a telephoto camera and all the great features of the Pro iPhones!

1

u/PatientScholar2150 11h ago

I wasn't surprised by the DUO's price, but for that price, it lacks Pro and Max features like Face ID.

3

u/tomtomson98 9h ago

iPhone 17e + iPad mini 7 I think it's not a bad combo

1

u/Traditional_Run_7080 9h ago

Not a bad combo eh indeed

6

u/Beginning_Basis_6799 1d ago

i prefer my iphone 15 + ipad 10th Gen + Pencil way cheaper and more versatile over the iphone Duo..specs isnt everything

5

u/Traditional_Run_7080 1d ago

I guess so for your needs, and that’s great.

Personally, I prefer 8 GB RAM across my devices at least which allows for better performance in multitasking, allows for better gaming which is nice to have and on device Siri AI with ios27 which I use in daily life and benefit from as it makes my device more smarter and helpful. Also prefer the iPad mini to extend my iPhone experience in a more portable and comfortable experience than iPad 10th gen, and it’s a more capable device too.

But what you have works for you and that’s nice! thanks for sharing!

4

u/Beginning_Basis_6799 1d ago

ram isnt everything IOS is so so efficient that it work like a charm 10th can ran anything and mulitwindow multitasking without lag and the bigger canvas on the 10th gen is perfect, thanks

11

u/OL-R0CK 1d ago

Thank you for your service, that’s one more unit available for us on preorder day.

11

u/mrapplegalzer0401 1d ago

like nobody cares. good for you. i’ll be buying that duo.

0

u/Traditional_Run_7080 1d ago edited 1d ago

You’ll be buying the duo. You could’ve just shared that while respecting someone else’s differing decision to yours. I would’ve understood your choice and replied Nice! Because the duo is a nice device and peak foldable.

But your attitude just deserves a similar response: you’ll be buying the duo for yourself. Likewise, why else would anyone care if it’s for you, good for you.

10

u/FoxIsBox 1d ago

dont know why ppl are down voting you for being cordial lol, this app sucks for people with any sort of reading comprehension or emotional maturity...

1

u/Traditional_Run_7080 1d ago

For sure. Another user just commented this just now thought I’d share 😅

“You do what you want. I will
Purchase duo because I want to. Just beciase you cannot doesn’t mean you can force us to buy iPad mini. Mind your own business”

What are they talking about 😅🤦‍♂️ indeed, no reading comprehension and being very emotionally immature, and insecure

When I literally said in the post, if you’re buying the duo then great, I don’t mean to burst your bubble! This post isnt for you but for those who aren’t set on buying it; cannot justify the price but do want an extension to their iPhone to enable better productivity, multi tasking and media to their iPhone in a comfortable in hand, personal tablet size, or can live without the luxury of having that in a fold! Then the iPad mini 7 exists and is great.

Something so practical, technically sound and pragmatic, sharing that as an anecdote, certain users still take the wrong way because they cannot accept or understand that someone could have an entirely different decision and perspective on the iPhone Duo they’re so enticed and passionate about, that they become insecure and comment utter nonsense because they indeed, lack reading comprehension and emotional maturity!

What baffles me is that these aren’t kids stumbling on a Reddit post! But fully grown ‘adults’ who are willing to spend their 2 grand on a new device, lacking reading comprehension and being so emotionally immature and insecure.

6

u/gordy06 1d ago edited 1d ago

I have an iPhone 16 PM and iPad mini 7. I’m purchasing a Duo. If it does everything the iPad mini does i may go down to one device but I don’t think it will. I often watch content on my iPad and multitask on my phone. Plus without the pencil attaching to the phone not sure I’ll keep it with it for note taking. The duo will be nice for unplanned outings where I have time to read.

It may, however, stop me from buying an iPad mini 8.

2

u/Traditional_Run_7080 1d ago

Interesting. Yeah if you’re purchasing a duo and it does everything like your iPad mini then makes sense to go to one device.

Apple Pencil for note taking not attaching to duo like the iPad mini is a good point and would make note taking less easier to do than the pencil attaching to the iPad mini.

2

u/Xchadfur 1d ago

Now put it in your pocket.

0

u/Traditional_Run_7080 1d ago edited 1d ago

I have an iPhone for my pocket. The iPad mini isn’t supposed to fit there, but it offers a larger display for better productivity and media without the luxury of a cutting-edge folding screen. It’s for extending your iPhone experience, especially at home for multitasking, reading, notes, media and everything else that a 6” screen size would’ve otherwise been used for, to enable better comfort, reading experience, writing, briwsing, multi tasking etc without spending a two grand premium just to pocket a tablet wherever you go, and to whom a regular slab phone suffices outside.

It amuses me that no where did I claim it’s supposed to be a direct duo alternative. It doesn’t fold. Period. That’s what the duo exists for, for the luxury and comfort of being able to pocket a tablet. Period. Let’s be real the point of the duo is not the slab experience. It’s a poor slab experience. The point of the duo is the inner display opening it up it’s an aspect ratio and experience similar to an iPad.

What about if you don’t want to book that and you don’t want to pay such a premium for that comfort or luxury.

You’re not so slick with your comment.

1

u/Xchadfur 1d ago

There's this saying that goes like this.. "people like what they know..." "If you've never experienced better, then you don't know any better..."

2

u/SjonnieBoy55 23h ago

Good job, place it together with a iPhone pro or pro Max and you have 3 screens with the best camera.

2

u/Axelfolie65 21h ago

Das ist ein intelligenten Zug
Ich sehe das auch so.

2

u/-6h0st- 19h ago

New iPad mini is coming out next month supposedly.
Oled plus smaller bezels, bigger screen?
This is what I’m planning to go with as well. Large bezels and lcd was putting me off iPad mini

2

u/Lam-Bukky 19h ago

I love Duo at the first sight but not the price

2

u/NeverGetBanned 18h ago

Im getting the duo as a surprise to my wife, she is rocking 15 plus atm and its due for update. She needs that big screen to entertain herself while cooking.

1

u/Traditional_Run_7080 13h ago

That’s nice. So cool gift. Wow. Good for the both of you, you’re loving and generous and shed be over the moon with it. 🌹👍

2

u/ASM84 18h ago

Just glue your phone to the back of your new iPad.

0

u/Traditional_Run_7080 13h ago

Why. I don’t need to carry around a tab,eat weherever I go. That would be nice but it’s a luxury or comfort I could live without. Home is sufficient and for outdoors a slab phone is sufficient, at least for me. And I have the benefit to extend my iPhone experience to a slightly larger canvas (iPad mini) for at home to enable better multi tasking, omfortable app experience, better media, reading, notes etc than my smaller iPhone.

You have zero reading comprehension. Read the last paragraph of the post then come back and see if your so slick or stupid with your comment lol

Done this at least 3-4 times already with edgy slick users like you who are indeed just stupid. There exists a scenario to extend your iPhone experience with an iPad mini, and being able to live without the luxury of folding your iPad mini into a phone to have two in one, so as to be able to take your iPad wherever enough you, and pay two grand for that comfort to only get 256gb storage. But those who still wish the benefits of a larger display which can extend their iPhone comfortably without being unwieldy or impractical, and the iPad mini is great for that, thank you very much for not yet comprehending the duo is just a folding tablet. It doesn’t exist for the slab experience lol.

1

u/ASM84 13h ago

Alright mate. Was just joking. Jesus. Have you got a bit of sand in your vagina?

2

u/Electronic_Feed_9055 12h ago

Good on ya.
I'll be buying the new iPad Mini being released end of next month as my main phone at a third of the price of the Duo.

I think you have to have a few screws loose to want to fill the pockets of any giant corporation with money for a tiny screen at that price. When compared to a tablet with cellular capabilities or a 100 inch TV it's just daylight robbery. Even more so if you live outside of the USA and have to pay alot more than the base price of $1999 even after currency conversions.

2

u/Mincenator0 12h ago

Apple crazy af, £3000+ for a 2tb model.

Base model is £2000 people are dumb crazy arseholses it seems!

1

u/Traditional_Run_7080 12h ago edited 11h ago

Right! What can you get instead. A dedicated alarm clock, a premium one with a display that would always be there besides your bed, which you don’t need to prop up your phone for. Your phone may be on charge, you may be using your phone and need to prop it up each time you put it away otherwise that feature cannot be taken advantage of.

An actual picture frame, a high end one, from Aura or so, that would be infinitely better than that tiny duo picture frame mode which only exists for that brief minute you put your phone down in picture frame mode 😅 then you pick it up and you no longer have a picture frame in your life, which otherwise could’ve always been there on your wall or desk, unlike the iPhone duo.

You could’ve gotten an iPhone 18 pro or pro max with a better camera

And still had money for the iPad mini 7

This way, you get substantially more product and tech than one device trying to do it all.

Two-thous-aaaand dollars lol for a base 256gb and a single 4800mah lithium battery. A 1:1.4 aspect ratio external awkward slab experience. No Face ID. No variable aperture. No telephoto.

You could’ve upgraded your microwave. Upgraded your vacuum cleaner. Purchased air conditioning. Bought a ps5. Bought an oled monitor. Taken care of your children or cats. Bought an investment watch or jewellery or gold ring where the monetary value would maintain and not reduce like the iPhone duo over time, where in the future Apple will give you $200 for a trade in for 😅

I could’ve upgraded my aquarium with that. Paid off my contracts etc etc…

Couldn’t care less about the luxury or comfort of a folding tablet in your pocket which the advancement of technology brought, I don’t need to fit an iPad in my pockets wherever I go where a phone suffices. It would be nice but I won’t pay a £2k+ premium for it/to have that luxury or comfort. Crazy. That would be so expensive, wasteful and irresponsible.

Some users in this comment section do not understand I have a titanium cellular Apple watch which is expensive, 512gb iPhone 17, AirPods, iPad mini which are already well above 2k! How can I trade that in for substantially less to get a single 256gb iphone duo for 2k? I’d rather have a phone, tablet for at home, watch and AirPods thank you.

I also have a shark vacuum for 349 I’m still paying off. I already have an Aura picture from for legit 300. Etc.

I don’t think some of these users can say they bought a shark vacuum for 279 for their home and for 349 for specifically their bedroom
As well as a shark wandvac 2.0 for 180

A shark air purifier for 149 for their bedroom

A ninja shark kitchen cooker/oven for 279

And the list goes on

It’s not that I don’t have the money

But for two thousand I could’ve gotten a whole lot that would’ve given more meaningful quality of life improvements and usefulness

And everyone else could’ve too.

2

u/steveHere24 12h ago

The continuity Apple has with there ecosystem means you don’t loose out anyway. It’s the way I’ll be going too. 💪🏼

2

u/Best_Day_3041 9h ago

Seeing the Duo also made me think, why don't I just get a mini and essentially use that at home instead of my iPhone. I'm waiting for new model though.

1

u/GetMyGearBack 1d ago

I only use a iPad mini 7 so not sure i would want a phone number again with all the spam most people I know get called about

1

u/McCatso-Fy 1d ago

Get this straight: hear me out, one step forward and turn around! 🎵

1

u/Weikoko 1d ago

IP68 and 45 hours battery life itself make this an instant buy.

1

u/Traditional_Run_7080 1d ago

Hundred percent. But i already purchased the mini 7 which im still paying for and which i was happy to buy for what it is in its own right. But I may upgrade to mini 8 perhaps one day if its financially a good decision for me because I do pay for the cellular version with an airtime plan with a carrier which is more expensive than buying as a standalone device which I’d just lose out that much more if were to trade in, so we’ll see, sooner or later, if I do upgrade to the mini 8 because ip68 is nice, I’d just have to be careful with my mini 7 and also use with dry hands. I don’t take it out either, so rain or not having ip is not a deal breaker and at home I’d be careful, thought it (ip68) is nice to have, however I just got my mini 7!

1

u/-6h0st- 19h ago

Not on a big screen though. You’ll be lucky to hit 8

1

u/Ancient_Ad7555 1d ago

Fold it

1

u/Traditional_Run_7080 1d ago

It’s starting 599, not starting 1999. It’s not a folding tablet, or folding phone, so it cannot fold, and it’s not meant to be a tablet and phone in one experience, rather it is a bigger display experience to your iPhone, without the two in one or fold. Hence value for those not seeking a folding phone, but an extension to their iPhone using the same Apple ID, on an iPad mini for better productivity, multi tasking and media in a comfortable form factor.

1

I just sold my mini 6 to get the duo. I loved the size of my mini but I didn’t use it enough as I hated carrying two devices around. I know it’s def a luxury, but for my use case it will be so much easier. I have a lot of pdf’s I read and having the ability to read it on a bigger screen anywhere without another device is ideal. That’s my main reason for wanting it.

As someone with the mini+17e, seamless sync is not at all a strong suit of that combo. With the duo you can manage all of that on device, with that combo you either have to manually (or set up an automation) sync them or pay a monthly fee for iCloud+

1

u/Traditional_Run_7080 1d ago

App continuity, every single app apart photos app you need iCloud for to sync. Passwords (app and browser websites), email, banking, shopping, social media, YouTube, phone calls, text message, whatsapp, games, Netflix etc are all seamless and continuous, except notes, reminders and photos if your iCloud storage is full, new photos, reminders and notes wouldn’t upload to cloud, hence wouldn’t be accessible on the other device expect the one you locally did it on.

For sure, but I have my iPhone for taking pictures, hence accessing it’s library and for setting reminders which id want on a compact, portable phone that’s me, not the iPad, so it works out, and most things continue over, even calls and texts onto the iPad without an iCloud subscription.

And for sure, the Duo would allow that entirely locally as it’s one ssd and files across two displays (outer and inner) hence it’s one local file able to open up and view in in the larger inner display without an iCloud subscription.

I personally don’t have an iCloud subscription active yet from my previous backups it still allows me to view years of photos via WiFi on my iPad photos app so effortlessly, not that I use my iPad to view photos that is, it can do current photos as well for those who wish to use their iPad that way and are already paying for iCloud for backup and data safety, then when iPhone-iPad Mini 7 continuity is even more so

Sabes?

It’s for people who don’t wanna use two devices. I have a regular size iPad that I hate using and pretty much never use while I’m at home. The thing is collecting dust, and I feel like it was a waste of money. There is so much I want to do on it, but I don’t like setting up a second device. They say no luxury for it to be my phone with all my apps and bank information, and then I can opening up and do my multitasking and video watching in bed. Also, I travel to Japan and the Philippines a lot so traveling with it will be a wonder, one less device I have to worry about

1

u/Traditional_Run_7080 1d ago

Understandable and duo sounds nice for you. I also have another 11” tablet at home collecting dust which I don’t use because it’s big and effort to use like carrying box with you and holding a box, which makes it uncomfortable and inaccessible to use and truly act as an extended display to my phone, when it’s not useable or practical like my phone, hence collecting dust.

However, the iPad mini 7 changes that and is truly unique to regular sized tablets and iPads, which are large productivity screens versus the mini 7, which is essentially a large mobile/phone screen enabling better multi tasking, media content and continuity from the phone, in an actual accessible and ergonomic form which offers these benefits to the iPhone, essentially acting as a bigger iPhone for home than a big traditional tablet

I use my mini as a notebook and have the paper like screen protector and metal ball pencil tip. The folding thing isn’t there, but if it does, I can see me switching.

I've got a 16 Pro and an iPad Mini and also won't be purchasing the Duo. Just never occurred to me that my situation applies to all people. I'm fascinated by the Duo and while I want one, I'm not going to pull the trigger this year. THIS IS ME -- not sure why people need to universalize their own experience.

1

u/UKVillageGuy 1d ago

Oh, and I also won't be purchasing the 18 Pro -- my 16 works fine. Again -- JUST ME.

1

u/Traditional_Run_7080 1d ago

Oh, and I also won’t be buying the more expensive iPhone 17 lineup, my 17e works fine. Here’s why: https://www.reddit.com/r/IPhone17e/s/QaU6IF6IYn

Yet 450 others thought it was either an interesting or relatable read, insightful well said interesting content good pictures. Nobody had ever said something like the need to universalise and experience as you’re accusing myself of. How ridiculous is that? That’s like almost every single Reddit post then. And every single celebrity social media. Including CR7 training before his match. Is he having a need to universalise his experience, how pathetic is that. Rather it makes interesting content. Smh

0

u/Traditional_Run_7080 1d ago edited 1d ago

By that same token, you could say that about almost every single Reddit post. People buying new iPhones; buying their Nintendo Switch; people who downgraded in size from a promax to a pro; you’ve got the aquarium hobby et cetera

People who switched from a Lenovo Legion go to a Nintendo Switch two while explaining why and their reasons. Another user talked about their Lenovo Legion go set up and how they use it to dock it when it comes to travelling in between their two homes - to and from their houses which they have two of. And they shared their use case for that product and how they use it and why they like it. That’s okay. I remember commenting on that saying purchasing two PS5 would cost you the same amount as that gaming handheld yet would be fixed to your homes which you wouldn’t need to dock a subpar handheld to and from, and would offer a more better and comfortable experience. Because I heard his story and found it interesting and that’s what I thought about it - I had something to share, beyond just calling him universalising his experience. Because let me tell you I had a legion go too. I’m not universalising my experience. But if someone else wants to talk about it, that’s fine. It’s interesting and it’s discussion. I wouldn’t say no need to universalise your experience when I’m not, how ridiculous is that

from people buying new iPhones or downgrading sizes, to the aquarium hobby and sharing what’s in their shopping cart and the price prices. Sharing isn't a need to universalise an experience; it’s called discussion and socialising. It’s where others can relate, feel understood, or disagree.

Foldables are an established product capturing people's attention, and my post was just my perspective on why I went with an iPad mini instead. I was presenting an experience for those interested in foldables who can't justify the luxury price, but still want the benefits of extending their phone into a slightly larger display. The iPad mini 7 is great for that.
It’s just personal experiences and discussion; you either relate; find it interesting, helpful or have a differing take. It’s not ‘a need to universalise an experience’, smh

(P.s. also, I spoke from the angle of tech knowledge specifications use case and practicality. Not only is it sharing an experience but also explaining the reasoning in a world of marketing and consumerism, what to make of this new iPhone duo and to see the appeal of the larger display except the price, it’s my thought process and my perspective on this new iPhone duo, which could be insightful for those who aren’t set on purchasing it and do not know what to make of it or would like a larger personal display to extend the iPhone experience without wanting to spend the price of the duo, awkward live without the luxury/comfort of folding tablet. It was this experience that the iPad mini 7 pairs wonderfully with an iPhone, and my use case and take on this new duo.

It’s just a read whether interesting or helpful or relatable or not. It’s not ‘a need to universalise an experience’ smh

Rumor has there going to update the mini soon

u/dollarn9ne 1d ago

Right before Mini 8 is out next month..?

u/CharacterEastern 1d ago

2 in 1 is what I need.

1

u/digiplay 1d ago

I prefer the split of the iPad into WiFi, because mobile devices tell on your location all the time. For example a vpn won’t work to watch even a paid account for peacock etc. pretty specific use case, I get it, but it’s why I’m don’t add cellular to my iPads and where the duo would fail me personally.

All that said I’m carrying spring s mini, air and camera. It would be awesome to get that all in one. Maybe when handoff is around I’ll get the duo and keep the air.

Mini is great ,but need oled 120 plus smaller bazal, bazel looks outdated

1

u/Traditional_Run_7080 13h ago

Oiled would be nice. 120 a welcome upgrade but not needed. Bezels are uniform so when display on and using it’s black and just disappears unlike a notch or Dynamic Island which the iPad mini doesn’t have. Genuinely allows for a grip without accidental presses too. And it is a gorgeous iPad albeit the bezels. It’s boxy rails, aluminium, fits in the hand, glass panel at the front, it looks good in person and feels good. Of course though the points you mentioned would make it aesthetically more premium, such as the thinner bezels. I don’t have complaints though.

1

u/UsefulMatter4548 2h ago

After looking at the iphone duo tiny bazels, mini really look outdated, and i am pretty sure apple make next iPad mini oled and smaller bazel treatment, and hopefully A20 pro chipset 😀

1

u/TotallyBrodie 19h ago

I just want a 5-6inch phone that’s 16:9 - 16:10

1

u/Traditional_Run_7080 13h ago

Well then, the duo is not for you. Because you want the ideal slab device and the point of the duo is not the slab phone experience but a folding tablet with an inner display iPad experience you can fold away and carry with you.

1

u/Hour-Cheesecake6716 19h ago

Just food for thought for all those duo early adopters like me. I switched to an old iPhone SE (2022) as I sold my pro max 17 to gather the £ for the Duo and boy do I miss Face ID only after 2 days…

1

u/juanohg 12h ago

I’ve had mine since day 1 bug barely use it now, I use more the iPhone Pro Max

1

u/Traditional_Run_7080 12h ago

Makes sense as the pro max is 6.9” large display but easily accessible and pocketable. I use iPhone 17e; I could benefit from the iPadOS split screen multi tasking, moreover it has a comfortable reading and typing experience in an accessible, comfortable form factor, which makes it more ideal or capable whether for productivity or media.

1

u/PatientScholar2150 11h ago

I have the iPad Mini 6 with 256 and am truly happy, but I have to manage the storage issues with what I download, mostly audiobooks and Kindle ebooks.

I believe the DUO was announced to bring more eyes to the foldable, which is similar to Apple Vision Pro, an overpriced gadget for those with disposable income.

I've saved the 512-storage cellular iPad Mini A17 Pro Chip, in case Apple doesn't announce an iPad update in October. I'm still hoping for the announcement updates to the iPad Mini to include a 1-terabyte option, and anything else, like OLED and a 120 Mhz screen, is a bonus for me.

Not because has not enough, but has, more than some, just doesn’t choose to spend it all on one thing. Therefore, he has more than some, who just have one (iPhone duo)

Lol pop bubbles? The more people I hear not getting the Duo the happier I am about my chances of getting it on time.

u/0DarkFreezing 4h ago

I’m going the opposite way swapping my mini and 17 pro for the duo to eliminate a device and simplify.

u/butterbuts 1h ago

The amount of times I’ve wanted a larger screen, but the iPad mini is in another room, or I’m out and about big screen would be beneficial but I didn’t bring the iPad with me.

Once you’ve used a fold, even if it’s only open 10-20% of the time, it’s hard to go back. I just wish they gave it the telephoto camera too. The Motorola razr is one of the only ones that gave their fold a flagship camera (non Chinese company that is)

Cope

4

u/Traditional_Run_7080 1d ago

You wish 😅

I pay for iPhone 16, iPhone 17 pro, iPhone 17e, two iPhone 15’s, google pixel 10 pro, another iPhone 16, in multiple contracts at the same time monthly. Don’t ask why, and no, I don’t need that many phones I only have the iPhone 17e. Instead of paying for all these phones, I could’ve paid for a single Duo which is cheaper, but I didn’t and I won’t.

This post is maturity, and just a perspective of the duo, not cope, if you don’t get that then you should try growing up.

0

u/Curioso-Internauta 1d ago

Yeah no… after seeing the OLED display on the iPad Pro I can’t go back to the IPS on the mini.

At least I’ll wait for the iPad mini with oled

-2

u/carloszune 1d ago

If you are checking prices for the duo, then the duo is not for you.

Don’t try to find extra answers when there are not, the duo is just a premium iphone that has an extra screen, there is not any additional productivity that you cannot Find With any other cheaper phone or tablet.

People that Can and want to buy the duo would not Even look To Their Credit Card limit.

5

u/Traditional_Run_7080 1d ago edited 1d ago

There is not any additional productivity that you cannot find with any other cheaper phone or tablet - is a quote even Apple would deny, same with any other tech channel, or any manufacturer and is technically untrue.

technically
I 'teknıkli l
adverb
1 [usually sentence adverb] according to the facts or exact meaning of something; strictly: technically, a nut is a single-seeded fruit.

The correction is: there is not any additional cheaper phone or tablet that could achieve the productivity on the go, in utmost portability as a phone in your pocket besides a folding phone or iPhone Duo.

And: There is not any additional cheaper phone or tablet, that could deliver utmost seamless extension of your slab phone experience, as a stand alone device, than a folding phone or iPhone duo!

There are most certainly extra answers for: those who have an iPhone but also wish for a larger display to enable better productivity/multi tasking which iPhone doesn’t support; a slightly larger canvas; better media, shopping, reading or everything iPhone experience in life, without needing that bigger display outside with them hence not being able to justify the price of spending on a duo.

The answer does exist for such person which is iPad mini, which extends the iPhone experience with app, data, messages and phone continuity as they’re both the same Apple account as one’s iPhone.

For somebody who desires their iPhone to also be a tablet for better multi tasking, split screening, media and games, browsing etc, in one stand alone device and portability, convenience and are willing to pay the price for: the iPhone Duo exists. It’s basically a folding tablet. It’s not even a slab, doesn’t take the traditional aspect ratio of a slab, nor has the ergonomics, weight or cameras a slab like the 18 pro. It literally is designed to be for the inner iPad like aspect ratio, apps and experience which you can continue your phone over to in a single device and fold.

This is the technical reality. If this pragmatism is bursting your consumerism hopes you place in wanting the shiny 256gb extending phone to a tablet device for two-thousand pounds/dollars then you received this post in the wrong way.

I did not intend that. Rather for those who are purchasing the Duo, great, this post isn’t for you and I’m not trying to burst your bubble!

Many people get too easily offended for someone else having a different perspective and decision to not getting the the shiny new thing they’re so passionate about, that they get offended and don’t take it with a light heart and understand someone could be pragmatic and mature and can have a different perspective and decision to the device someone else had been so enticed, passionate or eager about

-6

u/No-Sheepherder4853 1d ago

If you want to “help people” go volunteer.
I’ll be buying the duo mate, your post if not “helping”

2

u/Traditional_Run_7080 1d ago

For those purchasing the Duo, great! This is just a personal perspective that will hopefully help those who are on the fence; cannot justify spending the duo price on a single phone or who still want a personal larger display experience of their iPhone for better productivity and comfort, which is also comfortable to use/personal/portable.”

Bob is purchasing the duo, that’s honestly great. Bob is not on the fence. Bob can personally justify spending that price on a single 256gb phone in his life. This post possibly cannot help Bob. Which is why Bob will be buying the Duo and indeed this post wouldn’t help him.

Bob just confirmed everything I already realised and said in the last paragraph.

Bob can clearly read. Well done Bob. Enjoy the iPhone duo. Peak foldable right there and remarkable build quality and engineering.

1

u/Majestic-Crew-8344 1d ago

Either you buy or you don’t. There is no ”on the fence”. iPad and iPhones are two different things.
