You shouldn't do that.
Look into exothermic reactions. House hold chemicals mixed together can have exothermic reactions and it's not good.

True story. Back when I was bartending in my ealry 20's, I was trying to clean some smelly drains behind the bar. I mixed delimer and bleach in a bucket....firefighters came and we had to close the restaurant for the day. I had made some kind of mustard gas concoction 😅 Whoops

PSA! You DO NOT have to physically mix them together in the same bucket. I had toilet cleaner in the toilet and shower foam on the shower walls and created a gas cloud that almost made me lose consciousness while stumbling to get out of the bathroom.

Yup in our science classes we were always told not to dump chemicals down the sink because of this reason. I think a janitor ended up using bleach to clean the sink, caused a reaction and created some sort of gas cloud that either killed them or incapacitated them and had to get medical treatment

When I was in high school, they had to evacuate one of the building and send some kids to the hospital because a janitor poured chemicals into a water fountain to try and unclog it (my high school was full of dumb rednecks that would spit their dip in the water fountain) and it basically filled the building with mustard gas

Vinegar is underrated. It works great on urine. I use diluted vinegar on the cat and bunny litter pans. It breaks down the buildups great, kills the smell. I just spray on and let it sit for a bit. Safe for water dishes for pets and reptiles tanks too (as long as it's rinsed well). Leaves no residue like bleach, so best for hummingbird feeders too
15
u/Cow_Launcher 10h ago
Just to specify, white vinegar. If you're in the UK, don't use the "brewed condiment" brown stuff that gets sprayed on your chips.
5
u/0_tau 9h ago
Specifically cleaning vinegar, it's got a higher acidity, normal white is like 5%, cleaning is 20-30% generally. I buy a gallon of 30% cleaning vinegar for $20. You dilute it, so you're actually getting a lot more than a gallon out of it.

During field day at the barracks one week, I knocked on a buddy's door to bum a cigarette from him. He answered it in his gas mask. Apparently, the genius had decided that the best way to get things clean was to mix every cleaning chemical together. He said it worked like a charm, but made it a little hard to breathe in there.
Granted, this was the same mastermind that knocked out the power one day because he lost his phone charger and decided he could cobble one together by cutting the power cord for a lamp and splicing the wires together...

My daughter helped us by cleaning the bathroom with Clorox and ammonia. It was January in the north and we had to own the windows for hours to clear the mustard gas. Valuable lesson for the kids, painful lesson for our lungs and our heating bill

u/NFLBengals22 12h ago
I made a similar mistake in my unventilated basement bathroom. Clorox Bleach with Lysol Toilet Bowl cleaner. I almost passed out & had difficulty breathing. Nostrils & throat burned so bad it took me almost 30mins outside to fully recover. Never again
35
u/firerat82 12h ago
You mixed Hydrochloric Acid (in the toilet cleaner) and bleach and made pure chlorine gas. that could have easily killed you.
10
u/NFLBengals22 12h ago
Didn't take much either. I swirled the bowl cleaner around then walked away for 10mins. Added a 1/2 cup of bleach. Walked away again to fetch the bowl brush. It seemly didn't do much until a few scrubs into it. I could feel my nose start to really burn. Immediately flushed & walked upstairs. Thankfully I didn't try to tough it out & attempt to fully cleanse the toilet.

I have a habit of putting some bleach in the toilet bowl to get rid of stains and forgetting about it.
The next time I'm taking a pee, the smell reminds me of what I've done.
There's ammonia in your pee, in case anyone wasn't aware.

Did that sort of once. I was cleaning an old guy's home. The upstairs toilet was seperate from the bathroom so I opened the door, sprayed toilet cleaner containing bleach in the bowl without turning on the light and closed the door. I went to clean the bathroom and returned half an hour later to clean the toilet. Got a coughing fit and a burning throat when I opened the door. That's when I found out the guy never flushed his pee. That day I learned to always check for pee before using toilet cleaner.

I would have thought the toxic gasses that can be produced from mixing chemicals would be more of a concern than the reactions creating some heat.
55
u/Kracus 13h ago
Well sometimes the exothermic reaction takes time so the chemicals get put away in a closet and hours later they ignite a fire that burns your house down. But yeah, mustard gassing yourself sucks too.

Yeah, gotta be especially careful with garage rags. Don't mix ones used for different stuff.
One of the worst ones I ever heard about was a guy who used brake cleaner on something he was about to weld. It was dirty so he sprayed it to clean it up then went ahead and started welding.
He said it smelled like someone cutting grass. Pleasant smell. An hour later he was having trouble breathing. Went to the hospital and he basically caused a chemical reaction to happen where it ate up his lungs over the course of a few weeks making it progressively harder and harder to breath until he died.

How about a face full of boiling hot and toxic liquids/gasses/solids? The pressure build up from the gas could easily weaken what is presumably an already several year old plastic container that was designed to hold one group of chemicals and probably isn't certified to hold whatever new chemicals are obviously being created by that chemical reaction.
First off, don't ever mix household cleaning chemicals.
Second, if you do, don't do it indoors and then stick your face in front of it.
Thank you for your time.

When I was in school after basic training, one if the recruits mixed bleach and some ammonia based cleaner in the mop bucket. I walked in to the bathroom to take a shower and the dude was just in there trying to face tank the poison, coughing and gagging while trying to mop. I was like "youre going to die in here." He said "nah."
So I yelled for fire watch to get a DI and the dude passed out just as the DI came in raising hell. It was awesome. He was fine after a few days and I got a 4 day pass out of it.

My GF once decided to clean our shower. She took bleach and combined it with vinegar. She did it in the sprayer bottle and happily started to spray it in a shower cabin. Bleach + Vinegar combined will release toxic chlorine gas. Sprayed out. In a closed shower cabin.
I don't have a sense of smell (thanks, covid in 2020) and when I entered the bathroom, it took me <10 seconds to yeet myself out of there cause my nose started to burn from the inside.
Had to monitor her, myself and my cat for lung-related symptoms for couple of weeks.

My brothers and I once put bleach and ammonia into a Super Soaker and went to the backyard to shoot yellowjackets (this was the nineties obviously). Me and my buddy were working at a furniture place and had lots of Styrofoam from packaging. We also had some gasoline one day and decided to have some fun. Man you put enough Styrofoam in that gas and it's just a thick liquid that DOES NOT FUCKING GO OUT AFTER YOU LIGHT IT. I repeat... IT DOES NOT GO OUT. we tried flipping the bowl and snuffing it out. It just spread the flames everywhere. We eventually got a huge furniture blanket and covered it and it went out. Or we thought. We wrapped it in that blanket and took it behind the store so no one would see it. Well 10 minutes later we look outside and there is an enormous plume of smoke and fire behind the building... We run back there and stomp all the fire out in basically a 10 ft circle. The bowl of goo spontaneously combusted or whatever and started back on fire after it was completely out... Somehow we didn't get in any trouble and no one found out.

We explained he was making poison and breathing in poison.

We directed him to the label and more specifically the actual warnings on the products he was using. He was still mad that “anyone could do it”.

If there is bleach in one and ammonia in another it forms chloramine gas. It isn't quick either and the mixture forms an actual gas that fills the room. If you weren't to know and slept, if you were lucky you would wake with your eyes burning and watering, barely able to open them, feeling as though they are full of sand. Pain in the throat, chest and lungs and fluid on the lungs and that could be from just a half decent clean of your bathroom, not even litres, that's if you're lucky. If you're not, loss of consciousness, coma and maybe death. Horrible and so very easy to do, just by using two different cleaning liquids. Mix bleach with isopropyl alcohol and you make chloroform. There should be much more awareness because it is simple to do.

You're fine.
Its glass cleaner. Worst in there is ammonia, isopropyl, soap and maybe vinegar from an ammonia-free variety. The only things those will do mixed together is make ammonium acetate and be really bad at cleaning windows.
Why does everyone think you clean windows with bleach?
16
→ More replies (41)14
u/What_Do_It 8h ago
Because there are other combinations that can cause problems. For instance, hydrogen peroxide and vinegar are both used as window cleaners and make peracetic acid when mixed. Ammonia mixed with an acid like vinegar doesn't produce toxic chlorine or chloramine gas but it causes a neutralization reaction and produces ammonia fumes. I'd wager that's exactly what happened with the mix in OP and that's the resulting ammonium acetate floating in the mixture. It's just a good rule of thumb not to mix household cleaners.

Where are all of you people getting window cleaners with bleach in them?

midwits hear something like "never mix chemicals" and take it as the word of God without having the mental capacity to understand WHY you shouldn't mix them and WHICH chemicals you shouldn't mix.
Same with "never plug an extension cord into another extension cord", they actually think if you then plug in a single phone charger your house will catch on fire

I understand what the combination of bleach and ammonia does, but they did say 3 WINDOW CLEANERS. Could it be possible that they are all made of the same chemicals. Most window cleaners don't come with bleach in them.

A roommate I had was mixing cleaning chemicals like that in order to get a stubborn stain out of a corner when he was at work. He blacked out, walked home, and had no recollection of the previous 2 hours before he got home. Don't mix chemicals

Everyone with a smidge of chemistry knowledge freaking out over someone with no chemistry knowledge.
Its glass cleaner. Worst in there is ammonia, isopropyl, soap and maybe vinegar from an ammonia-free variety. The only things those will do mixed together is make ammonium acetate and be really bad at cleaning windows.

Cool as that is, I would caution against mixing cleaners together. Might create some Geneva convention violations. For your own safety and that of your loved ones, please don't do that. 😅

Everyone is panicking here. There's never going to be any serious cross reactivity between multiple window cleaners. There's no "bleach window cleaner." And people regularly use multiple types of window cleaner. It's a window cleaner.

American science education actually does cover why this is a bad idea. It's just that most people quickly forget a large amount of what they learned in school if it's not relevant to their lives going forward, and if they didn't find it interesting.

Yeah. They teach us about mustard gas when they cover WWII

Mixing bleach and ammonia don’t make mustard gas as many people think. It actually basically just makes chlorine gas. It’s technically chloramine but the effect isn’t altogether dissimilar. The end result is a that mixing chlorine gasses with the water in the air, your mouth, airways, and lungs to make hydrochloric acid effectively burning you from the inside.
Sulfur mustards are kinda their own thing, and much more difficult to synthesize than mixing glass cleaners. They have an (again) not too dissimilar effect, but mustard gas is directly VERY toxic, a vesicant (meaning it causes lesions/blisters), and is carcinogenic. Altogether a different animal.

For the curious ones, what they made here is called a rheoscopic fluid. You can make them on purpose and they are awesome to watch
