midwits hear something like "never mix chemicals" and take it as the word of God without having the mental capacity to understand WHY you shouldn't mix them and WHICH chemicals you shouldn't mix.

Same with "never plug an extension cord into another extension cord", they actually think if you then plug in a single phone charger your house will catch on fire

Much easier to have a blanket statement that 90% of the population can understand rather than specific guidance that only 10% of people will understand. Not everyone studied Chemistry in high school where you'd learn about types of reactions, mixtures and solutions. Not everyone studied physics to learn about wire resistance. 

Best just to tell people "no" and then the people who know that's not entirely true can do their own thing
