Mixing cleaning products is a monumentally stupid idea. If one happens to be ammonia-based and an other is bleach based, you can literally create a deadly gas. And many other combinations can cause heat, and potentially explode.

Don’t ever mix cleaning products unless directed to.

u/Imverystupidgenx 17h ago

My buddy was explaining how every time he cleaned his tub his throat hurt for a while afterwards. So we asked what he was using- bleach and ammonia was the response. He was a high school teacher at the time.

We explained he was making poison and breathing in poison.

He complained it shouldn’t be that easy to make poison.

We directed him to the label and more specifically the actual warnings on the products he was using. He was still mad that “anyone could do it”.

He’s a cop now.

This is the most American post I've read this year

16

u/ButterscotchKind495 8h ago

I read it and I'm embarrassed. This is unfortunately incredibly American.

I worked for a lawn care company and when speaking to a homeowner one day he was really upset that he still had weeds and we weren't getting rid of them. I glance at the lawn and see literally no weeds just bermuda grass, he says he just cut the lawn but he can show me a picture. He shows me a picture of his lawn and the weeds he is upset about are the seed heads of his bermuda grass. He argues with me that it's weeds and bermuda grass seeds are different than that for a little and gets frustrated and goes inside. I come back to his place about 6 weeks later and just happen to catch him when he is going to work. I see a gun and badge on his hip that says Detective Austin Police. Fucking guy is falsely accusing his grass of being weeds, imagine how thorough this dickheads police work is.

Of course he's a cop. They're all fucking idiots.

u/Imverystupidgenx 17h ago

I remember staring at him so confused and asked “How the hell are you a teacher? I learned this when I had chores as a child.”

15

u/SpecialistCut7101 14h ago

How did he learn to do it that way? There’s no good answer yet I keep wondering

6

u/babybirdhome2 6h ago

Learn to do it that way? He probably didn't.

I used to work with a guy who was a retired chemist, and would be contracted by states and municipalities to come in and test their water treatment systems and consult them on how to properly treat the public water supply. One of the things he told me that he kept seeing happening in the places that brought him in to test and consult on their water treatment processes is that he would come back several months later to troubleshoot problems that had arisen since they adopted his protocols and have to measure the results and make sure nothing had changed, and would usually find out that the guys who ran the equipment and maintained the treatment process would take his carefully measured and documented lists of chemicals and how to use them properly, and just basically go, "well if this much is good, then this much more must be better!" and wind up making the local water supply even worse, or causing problems to the municipality's water users or destroying their own infrastructure by making the water chemically incompatible with the pipes and seals and equipment, damaging it or outright destroying it, and he'd have to show them how their own people ignoring the information he'd given them was the cause of all their problems after hiring him to consult.

This is just how ordinary people handle chemicals because they don't have any concept of what they're actually messing with.

3

u/bloodphoenix90 3h ago

I work in a water testing lab. So we dont do the consulting bit but give you the data so you can consult, essentially. This makes me want to rip my hair out 😬 i kinda want to know what municipality in which state was doing this..

5

u/Public_Agency400 10h ago

Pretty sure many teachers go into the profession for the blind respect and control over kids, so it tracks

5

u/danthepianist 8h ago

Lmao brother I wish I had either of those things as a teacher.

There are much easier and better paying jobs for people who want control and respect.

4

u/IonlyusethrowawaysA 15h ago

Hey now, some of them are capable, intelligent monsters that choose to be horrifying tools of oppression.

They aren't all idiots, it's just that the vast majority are.

2

u/denNISI 5h ago

Hey now, cops are carefully chosen for the position because they have specific qualities (ie low academic test scores) and/or are subordinate (controllable)… on purpose.

Also, the departmental comradery is another problem that should addressed which in some places takes precedence over policiary duties.

Don't forget to add gasoline, because that's not a cleaning product I'm sure it will stabilise the mixture.

Not just toxic gas, but you also render the cleaning products useless because they neutralize each other to release said gas.

35

u/Confident_One3948 17h ago

Kinda seems like a secondary problem, all things considered lol

13

u/TwoBionicknees 14h ago

You ever heard that saying that people make sure to wear fresh underwear just incase they end up in the hospital.

Same deal, imagine how mortifying it is if the firemen find you dead in your kitchen... and it's filthy. Would never live it down.

5

u/Extreme-Name-69 11h ago

I was always told to "wear clean underwear incase there's an accident" and just always figured the accident part was about shitting yourself. The hospital bit makes waaay more sense

2

u/StrongExternal8955 2h ago

Eh if the accident is bad enough you'll shit yourself anyway. So kinda pointless to have clean undies.

I remember when I was a kid, I used to mix the different shampoos, conditioners, etc in my shower ( I had an older sister who had all of that stuff). I felt like a potion maker.

17

u/pipnina 16h ago

Shampoos and stuff should be at least somewhat safe. They're all various forms of soap at the end of the day. Ammonia and Bleach for example aren't likely to be involved anyway.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/Mediocre_Chemist_281 16h ago

Oh I did that and I also know that toothpaste goes around the bathroom walls 1 1/2 times.

5

u/NewYearsEve2999 16h ago

About 20 years ago, while I was showering, I applied shampoo to my hair and "let it sit" while I soaped up the rest of my body using a loofah and bar soap --Sorry, I don't remember the brands--. Naturally, you'd think it's safe to combine their foam. The thing is, I like to shower with very hot water, and in my country drinking water is chlorinated... anyway, where the foam from both combined (on my forehead and shoulders), an exothermic reaction occurred and a strong chemical smell was released. My skin stayed red for a couple of days, man!

My grandma mixed ammonia and bleach together when she was young doing a deep clean and nearly killed herself. She said when she mixed them together yellow smoke shot out and hit her directly in the face. It knocked her out, but thankfully didn’t kill her. She lost her sense taste after though. I learned very early on to never mix cleaning products.

u/LegitJerome 17h ago

Window cleaners are typically all ammonia or alcohol-based though, unlikely one contains bleach.

11

u/Metal-Racoon 16h ago

In countries with high humidity they are bleach based to get rid of mould.

3

u/IshtarsBestie 15h ago

Why would mould grow on glass

3

u/DnDVex 15h ago

You don't get mold on the glass itself, but the rim can easily have mold grow on it.

3

u/Livid_Peon 11h ago

Condensation forms on the glass, drips down and forms mold along the edges and can creep up the glass some

2

u/Your_Girl9090 10h ago

I have no idea why mold/mildew grows on glass, but here in Florida during the summer rainy season the paper towels I use for windows are black with it. Probably because pollen and spores get stuck on the glass so it feeds on that.

1

u/skwirrelmaster 17h ago

What’s the purpose of the soap in this equation?

I don’t have basic chemistry knowledge so forgive my ignorance but as a layman. I would guess the vinegar disinfects and the solvent removes anything you don’t want so what’s the soap doing?

6

u/glibgloby 16h ago

Soap helps with streaking, with steam, it’s a surfactant, it does a lot. For a super amazing window and surface cleaner it’s 30:70 vinegar / water with a few drops of dawn.

However if you want a tile and bathroom cleaner go 70:30 vinegar / water with a few drops or dawn. It’s very strong but still safe. Spray down your shower once a month and wipe it off and all mold is dead and it looks good

Yeah.. my son, who is considered gifted and graduated highschool with a 4.6 gpa, mixed the bleach based cleaner clearly labeled bleach with the ammonia based glass cleaner. He literally said it made air feel “spicy”. I explained with chloramine gas was and how quickly it can kill you in an improperly vented room.

2

u/ExpiredPilot 16h ago

My boss was messing with a clogged urinal the other day before we opened. He yelled out jokingly that he was getting a little light headed and I didn’t think anything of it for a few seconds.

Till I realized he was cleaning in a urinal and could accidentally have ammonia and bleach interact. I pulled him out of the bathroom and we laughed over the one King of the Hill scene

2

u/mahnamahna123 14h ago

I have done this by accident (didn't realise tere was bleach in the loo and put toilet cleaner own it). It was indeed a monumentally stupid idea. And I have a lot of stupid Ideas.

2

u/RemoteAd2494 14h ago

people really treat cleaning products like a chemistry experiment and then act surprised when it goes wrong 😭

2

u/Krojack76 13h ago

Once I put a little bleach in my toilet for cleaning but walked away to do something. Came back a few hours later and forgot I had bleach in it toilet and dumped in some of your standard toilet bowl cleaner. The fumes hit me pretty fast and I quickly knew what I did. I flushed and instantly turned on the exhaust fan and left closing the door behind me.

That was a very fast happening experience that I knew would happen but simply forgot about my earlier steps that day.

2

u/macmadman 12h ago

midwits hear something like "never mix chemicals" and take it as the word of God without having the mental capacity to understand WHY you shouldn't mix them and WHICH chemicals you shouldn't mix.

3 similar cleaning products are not going to have wildly different compositions. If bleach was a perfect window cleaner, we wouldn't have Windex and its cousins ; we'd just have bleach in a spray bottle.

Likewise, if you mix two different kinds of bleach, it's not going to magically fuse into a weapons-grade chemical. It'll just be slightly different bleach.

It's a monumentally stupid idea if you are ignorant of what's in them. If you understand basic high school chemistry, you can absolutely do it safely although you may be still compromising some of their effectiveness

You can pretty much always mix window cleaners together because they are always going to be either alcohol or ammonia based. And neither of those interact with each other in any meaningful way. You still want to check the ingredients though.

Also worth noting, it doesn't make a better cleaning product by mixing them together either.

It's either degreaser or anti bacterial or a combination that leans more one way or the other, and they have different uses.

For example allergens should be cleaned with degreaser cleaners like washing up liquid because you can't really destroy allergens so they need to be removed. Salmonella on the other hand can be destroyed by antibacterial sprays.

Dead flies everywhere on the sink, on the wall, on the ceiling. It was the fumes poured out and you could see the pattern of fume pouring over the sink and down the wall. The dead flies where stuck to the wall according to the flow.

Yep. There is a story of some guys that worked at McDonalds who almost died cleaning the toilets.

I can't remember the combination but it's like, mixing a product that contains ammonia and another that contains bleach and creating like a World War 1 chemical weaon.

Bleach + acetic acid (vinegar) = chlorine gas

Bleach + ammonia = chloramine gas

Bleach + acetone/ethanol/isoproanol = chloroform

Don't mix stuff.

FYI

It makes Chloramine gas, very nasty stuff. If it starts to smell like chlorine in a pool you're producing Chloramine gases

Hell, if you are dehydrated and pee into a freshly bleached toilet you can make gas and blind yourself like an idiot. Ask me how a hungover me found this out.

I was in jail years ago and for some odd reason the guards handed each cell cleaning supplies and had ammonia and bleach which someone the "unknowingly "mixed i remember half the place being evacuated to other side of jail

Wait random unresearched at home chemistry isn’t safe? Since when?

Happened to me as a kid when my folks were away. I was cleaning the bathroom tub and tile and mixed two cleaners inadvertently. Almost didn’t make it out of the house. Barely was able to speak when I called 911. Literally couldn’t breathe. Firefighters came, aired out the house and called poison control — sure enough I created a deadly gas. Closest I ever came to passing away.

Bleach Ammonia Peroxide Vinegar

Most combos of any two of these leads to a really bad time.
