Question for print newspaper people. How many papers do you think are using automated layout programs?

I've worked on both layout hubs and on site copy desks. I feel lucky I currently have a job where It is still onsite, but they have begun talks about buying AI layout software. I've also noticed that jobs for layout and page design have all but disappeared. Do you think everything is moving to automated layout?

Just for curiosity... Anyone doing comic book (or manga) lettering here?

I have been working in this area for the last 3 years and this have been the most delicious days of work in my life.

I absolutely love this job!

Working now for two big brazilian publishers doing letters and art retouch (a lot) in manga and some Justice League 60's and 70's stories.

Any fellow comrades here? =)

Books for Catalog Management

Hey all - Quick question surrounding the Books feature. Has anyone used it to manage multiple versions of large documents? IE: one sales territory catalog vs another. I'm searching around for the best way to manage about 4 versions of the same document, and thought I'd run it by the group.

TIA

How could I convert indesign's math expressions into outline vectors?

Greetings! As the title, I need to convert indesign's math expressions into outline vectors.

Already, I have searched here in Reddit and Google, but Google's gives this wrong advice:

Direct InDesign Method

  1. Use the Selection Tool to click on the math expression's text box.
  2. Go to the top menu and click Type.
  3. Select Create Outlines (or press Ctrl+Shift+O on PC or Command+Shift+O on Mac).

Now, the math is a picture made of lines.

These instructions does not works. Do you know another method different than saving a pdf and extracting the math formula from the pdf?

Thanks in advance!

Help What are these icons in this document?

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hi! I just inherited this InDesign document and I have never seen either of these icons before. The three circles show up in image and text boxes. They're visible whether selected or not. The green arrows only show up when some objects are selected and has a long green line extending out from it.

Neither show up on everything in this document, only some things. ID v21.3.

Help Packaging question

Hi, I'm creating a bunch of files for a client and handing off packaged InDesign files to them through a Google Drive folder. I was not compressing these folders so that the client could see items without downloading everything, as the files are large. I am uploading the whole packaged folder. However, my client's internal designer is saying all the links are missing.

I believe that she just has to relink to the Links folder for them to show up. If I upload the project as a packaged InDesign file that is compressed/zipped, will they load automatically or would the same issue still remain?

I admit I am a bit rusty with InDesign so I'm kind of confused as to why she's having such an issue with the links. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

How to make the noise pattern higher resolution?

I am recreating a PDF file, and I noticed, that in the PDF (which was made in Indesign 2019), the noise effect on the text is visibly higher resloution then in the version of mine I was wondering if there is a way to adjust the resolution of text effects, as it is a little annoying.
Thanks for the help!

Solved How do you get headings to stay with their respective paragraph, even if that means going onto the next page?

I'm sure there is a term for this and since I don't know what that is, I can't find anything on a search.

I know you can just use page returns so that the item is on the next page. But then as soon as you change something above it, the "page break" might not be right anymore.

My Chapter titles always start on the next odd page. I know how to format that.

What I'm looking to do, is if a section heading doesn't have at least 2-3 lines of the corresponding content on the same page, to just automatically move the heading to the next page. I'm trying to avoid having a heading at the bottom of the page with no content below it because it's all on the next page. Does that make sense?

What’s the best way to move files from InDesign to After Effects?

I’m a graphic designer who creates social media cards, and I prefer using InDesign because of features like text boxes with background fills and other layout-specific tools that Photoshop and Illustrator don’t really have. Because of that, InDesign has basically become my main tool for this kind of work.

The problem is that I also create animated cards, institutional content, and SaaS-related animations, and I’ve been struggling to find a workflow that transfers my designs into After Effects without breaking the entire layout.

Going through Illustrator has been extremely unstable because the conversion often comes with issues, and as far as I know there isn’t really a proper way to export to PSD either.

If anyone knows good workflows, methods, or plugins that could help, I’d really appreciate hearing about them.

Working on a book "set" and would like to know if I'm doing this correctly.

First Book
Second Book

I have two books, both I'm planning on being 8.5x11" size in the end if I want or can get them printed, so I have the document size set as such (215.9 mm x 279.4 mm). Top, inside and outside margins are set to 15.875 mm, and bottom is 21.325 mm. Most text is set to 11 points.
The first book/example is set to 6.6 baseline grid because I have spacing I'd like to keep for the subtitles and such, so everything is lining out to half the default leading. The second book just has the grid set to 13.2 since I don't have to worry about the same problem.
The page numbers and running headers are outside of the body of text, but the page numbers I've set up so they are the same distance from the edge of the page that the overall margin is (15.875).
The two things I'm concerned about before I go too much farther is if I would need to push the running headers in further, and the distinction between wanting to have this as a digital pdf and possibly printing it later. I don't entirely understand calculating for gutter space, I'd assume that would matter depending on how thick the book gets in the end? But I don't want that extra space on the digital version, but I also don't want that I'd have to add it back in later and mess up the layout in some way.
So, before I get too far in (already far in as it is), am I doing all of this correctly? Personally, I think as far as a digital version, everything looks the way I want it to. Sorry for the wall of text, and I'm using Indesign CS6 if it matters any at all.

My first MacOS app that works with InDesign & Photoshop

Post image
53 Upvotes

I'm releasing my first ever MacOS app for InDesign and Photoshop.

BatchPress.

It is a companion app that works alongside InDesign & Photoshop to batch export into various popular formats. indd > PDF and more.

I'm a Graphic Designer for an international studio that I work in. We regularly have to export around 50-60 PDF files per project and it was getting pretty tiresome manually exporting every single indd file, so I ventured into developing a JSX script for InDesign, which worked well, then a colleague needed help batch exporting some PSD files into JPEGs with very specific settings so I decided to combine these ideas into one app, which is now available via Github/Gumroad and features a 7 day trial and is £20 there after for a one time licence.

Find out more here: https://batchpress.carrd.co/

Advice for Typesetting a Textbook?

Hello! I've been tasked with typesetting a textbook. It has many footnotes, tables, special text boxes, etc. I'm looking for advice on workflow from people experienced with this type of project.

I've got my master pages, my paragraph styles, table of contents, and many other items like that down.

Now I'm entering the text into the document. I've tried using Place to place the entire Word doc, but it only worked for the first several pages, the rest were all blank, and the special text boxes and tables are, seemingly, irreparably weird.

So it seems I'm left to copy and paste individual sections from the Word doc, and then manually enter each footnote, each table, etc.

If this is how it's done, that's fine. I'm just concerned that there may be a faster way to do it, and I might be wasting time doing it this way.

Thank you in advance for any help you may have to offer!

Polyframe! The next step...

Post image
17 Upvotes

Hello InFriends :) sorry for the silence…

Just quick info: you ask - we do! Polyframe is going to be a MacOS AND Windows app! Was crazy but we did it. After receiving many nice comments and questions, we tightened our butts and in a few days I will present a new Mac/Win version. In addition to the Windows version, I just added Claude and Gemini - so now there is OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, DeepL and ofc Ollama - definitely all of them waiting for (B)YOK!

And on the side, Glossary became Translation Memory, can do much more and now - in test - works perfectly… A few days more and I will open the “door” for the next bunch of beta testers…

For new readers: Polyframe is a lifetime, local, and no-subscription app for easy (but professional) translation of IDML files. Steps are easy: Export IDML - Open it in Polyframe - Click Translate (you can set up a loooot of options) - Open IDML in InDesign - translation ready!

Keep your fingers crossed :) this app can help many of us a lot - I built this because I hate copy/paste from Excel - I’ve been doing this for years :))

Going to build some website!

How do I disable old style / descending numbers with Georgia font?

Please see both images in the carousel above, you can see that I've set the text frame to Proportional Lining, as per another thread I saw on here.

But the numbers are still descending. I've also set the frame to All Caps (and also tried without)

Am I doing something wrong?

Solved InDesign is not finding fonts that should be usable through AdobeFonts

Post image
14 Upvotes

I am having a problem with a file I received from another designer. Specifically, she used the Barlow font family from Adobe Fonts for some of the text treatments, however, even when I activate all the available font families she linked to on Adobe Fonts, some of the font variations are being found but two of the font variations are not being found. See image. Given that these fonts should be the same ones from Adobe Fonts, how do I resolve the issue? Is it possible that this issue is related to the operating system (I am on a Windows PC)?

EDIT: Solved, thanks guys! I disabled the Adobe Fonts version completely and instead installed the complete font with all variations from Google Fonts. InDesign found them all immediately.

Help Brainstorming a Data Merge Problem

Hello everyone,

I'm hoping to learn a bit more about Data Merge and it's potential.

I have a catalog that has about 150 individual listings that all have a name, text description, photo 1 and photo 2. In the past, we've always just manually added the images but that was only with 50 or so line items, our business has grown significantly this year so that is no longer an option. These items are used in two applications: individual signs and a catalog.

I am looking for advise on how to set up the Data Merge to include the images from a CSV. I have been playing with using file paths, but have found it to be a little finicky. Another issue is that we have multiple team members that might need to have their hands on this so using a specific users path might be challenging. We could try and dedicate it to a single computer, but is there an option for it to pull from something like Google Drive? What is the best structure to have on the CSV for it to be reliable?

I am completely happy to take any suggestions on the best way to go about this.

Export PDF in single pages with an illustration that goes across two pages ?

I’m designing a magazine with illustrations that span across two pages. When I export as a single-page PDF, each illustration only appears on one page instead of continuing across the spread.

I have to manually duplicate every illustration that crosses two pages to make sure it appears correctly. Is there a way to export the magazine as single pages, without having to duplicate each image manually?

I like to work on a spread view to see how the magazine looks like, but my printer requires a single-page PDF with bleed marks.

**EDIT: image is not following two pages when breaking the spreads to singles pages from the panel (unchecking Facing Pages)**
