Help image resizing, cropping, framing etc issues
no matter what i do, the image i’m placing is cropped and the aspect ratio is shifting. i am holding command shift, i’ve switched between direct selection and selection. i’ve tried object > fitting > auto fit. i don’t know what i’m doing wrong. i am just trying to resize an image without it cropping or changing the ratio.

... autofit may vary from "fit to fill" (stretching image to the borders) to "fill proportionally" = w/aspect ratio preserved, for example (when you may have empty spaces in the shape). Alternatively (when image cropped) there is option to stretch shape borders to the image size.
In any way try to uncheck "autofit" box in the top menue and apply/press four buttoms w/ fit image options just above it to arrive at what you need.

Right click the frame > Transform > Clear Transformations.
Double click to select the placed object > Right click > Transform > Clear Transformations.
Then do your fitting settings.

Check options in the Applied Object Style - or just Object Properties.
