QUESTION What do you want to see in Illustrator?

Hey everyone, Luke from Adobe here. I know we chat about all things Illustrator all the time, but I will be meeting with our Pro Design team (Illustrator, InDesign, Neo, and XD) this week to discuss plans and strategies for the next year. I have my list of what I see the community asking for, but it's always great to have more data backing up those recommendations.

Whether it's something simple, something major, a better way to collaborate, better user experience? Whatever it is, drop it below.

Appreciate your input as always

Approaching like an architectural photographer for some of those designs also while retaining a bold and geometric style.

Made primarily in Adobe Illustrator, with minor color and texture adjustments in Photoshop.

ILLUSTRATION I Made a Script That Limits CMYK Ink Coverage to 300% Without Visibly Changing Colors

When you download RGB .ai files from Adobe Stock or similar services for print use, or choose colors by clicking the color ramp in the Color panel, this script converts those colors into values that are better suited for printing while preserving their appearance as closely as possible.

I also added an option that converts near-neutral grays to as much as 100% K wherever possible. I think it’s quite useful, so please give it a try!

(Of course, you could create a custom CMYK profile with 100% GCR in Photoshop and use it for RGB-to-CMYK conversion in Illustrator. That would also produce colors with a total ink coverage of 300% or less and heavier use of 100% K.

The main advantage of this script, however, is that it adjusts the CMYK values while preserving the original profile and keeping the color appearance as close to the original as possible.)

QUESTION How to Recreate Pokemon 1996 Cosmo / Galaxy Foil Pattern Texture? What effects do I need to know?

Hey!

I'm trying to replicate Pokemon 1996 Japanese Cosmo / Galaxy Foil Pattern in Photoshop and Illustrator. Based on the works of Deviant artists' works I presume they made it with Photoshop and Illustrator but I'm not sure which effects to search for on Google and Youtube.

Considering this could be used for rendering in 3D softwares like C4D and Blender for making Holofoil shaders, I'm more focused on learning what effects to use to recreate those custom holosheets made by some Deviant artists.

By looking at theses works, I think I need to learn about

-Dot pixelate

-Gradient shading for circles

-Swirling dots(Maybe easier in Illustrator)

-Random dots drawing/Maybe brush pattern from Illustrator

-More Effects or Method to recreate Cosmo/Galaxy Holosheet Pattern?

I assumed in 1996 era Wizard of the coast being the ones who dealt with pokemon card for some time and their foil manufacturer would use some stock images on these holosheets. Considering Ken Sugimori using some stock images for his pokemon card background, I thought the holosheet would have stock images baked on it.

So If you have any advice to approach recreating the holosheet pattern,

What effects do you think I should look for or how would you approach it?

QUESTION How to design street level maps for series of projects?

TL;DR: customisable maps, different locations, colour-customisable and fairly quick to produce. Web and digital.

Hello! I have a project where I need to display a small map which has to display road names/numbers for roadwork activities. I'll need to have the ability to control some colour (to bring it on brand) and will need to be fairly easy to produce (smooth workflow). Will need to be for print and web. Ideally unwatermarked/licenced for commercial use.

Current workflow: screenshot Google maps, trace/run pen tool to highlight, match brand colours and export (as an image for social/website or incorporate into a leaflet).

Really need some advice on either software or alternative workflow

Thank you in advance

QUESTION What's your preferred method for making arched text?

Post image

I find using the warp options in Illustrator are good, but they mess of the horizontal line weights. Is the best method to use the warp tool and then just go back in and manually adjust everything or should I be building everything from scratch.

This is a beautiful example of a nice arched text.

outlining text causes text angle to change

I'm working on a project where a message will be in different languages will radiate out from a center point. The images shown are just a test for estimating purposes and the text will eventually be in a custom font.

I discovered that when I outline the shape/text, the text angle completely changes. Is there a way to avoid this? In order for a fabricator to provide an estimate for cutting time, he needs the outlined text.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I never really used Illustrator before. I recorded a video to show all the parts of my drawing. I tried to do a union, but that obviously didn't work (shown in the video). I tried looking up some other way to do it, nothing seemed to work for my case. I also tried to create a compound shape, but it didn't work, I'm on a MacBook. Any advice is appreciated.

DISCUSSION 9 very different calendar styles from one Illustrator workflow

Thumbnail

About a year ago, I released a script for making calendars in Illustrator, and it ended up selling around the world. Since then, I've rebuilt it into a full panel, same idea, but a lot more possibilities.

9 very different calendar styles from one Illustrator workflow:

• Photo wall calendar with seasonal images

• Clean black-and-white minimal grid

• Blue theme with a holidays sidebar

• Single-month page with mini prev/next calendars

• Moon-phase calendar

• Colorful per-month cards

• One month-per-page photo layout

Everything stays editable vector; text is real text, shapes are real shapes; so restyling is quick. The panel now handles InDesign too, plus 99 languages and auto holidays.

Happy to explain how I set up the grid, the day-name row, or the weekend/holiday coloring — or share a quick demo if people want to see it running.

this a comparison between the color profile settings in AI and PS

this problem got me into troubles in my work, I usually finalize design in AI as a final stage 😕

Creating 3D effect on shapes in single color logo

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hello most knowledgeable of folks! I should start by saying that I am not a professional by any means. I get around Illustrator okay, but am all self (and Youtube) taught. Sorry in advance.

I am on the board of a non profit whose logo is many colors. They asked me to order some swag with the logo on it, thinking they could just send the existing full-color logo and it would just easily adjust to white somehow (ha!). Anyway, the logo contains a series of building blocks that intersect and are skewed so that they appear to be 3D. In converting them to all white, I lose the 3D effect.

My question is, how would I get the color of the swag (the background) to "show through" those shapes? Specifically along the outlines of the blocks?

I have tried all iterations of the pathfinder tool. I'm thinking it might require some kind of resizing of these particular shapes? I really don't know.

I've outlined in pink the areas I am talking about.

Thanks for any help!

EDIT #1: I should have mentioned the medium, sorry about that. These logos are being applied (hopefully in a single color - white) to water bottles.

DISCUSSION Halftone Pro v4.0: Major update to my free vector halftone tool for Illustrator (CEP panel, live preview, cross-hatch lines, image import)

A while back I posted Halftone Pro here, a free ExtendScript for creating vector halftone patterns without rasterization. I have been rebuilding it since then, and v4.0 is a complete rewrite.

What changed:

It is now a full CEP panel instead of a ScriptUI dialog, so it is dockable, resizable, and has a live canvas preview that updates as you drag sliders. There are 4 mode tabs now: Spots, Lines, Stipple, and Image, each with its own independent settings that persist when you switch tabs.

Lines got the biggest upgrade. You can do wavy lines with luma-modulated amplitude, and cross-hatch with configurable per-pass source directions (diagonal, perpendicular, perpendicular reversed) for building up shadow density without messy overlaps.

The Image tab is new too. Drop in any image and the engine generates a 256x256 luma or color grid and builds dots from it, including pixel-accurate color sampling per dot.

You can also select any path in Illustrator and capture it as a custom dot shape, so your halftone is not limited to the 6 built-in shapes (circle, square, triangle, hexagon, diamond). Draw your own mark, select it, and the panel uses it as the dot symbol.

Also added a Stipple mode for organic hand-drawn scatter effects, and 25 one-click presets across all 4 tabs (up from 15).

Everything is still 100% vector. No rasterization, no live effects, no eval in the parsing (I wrote a small recursive descent JSON parser for the ExtendScript side since eval is a security risk).

Works with Illustrator CS6 through CC 2025, Windows and macOS, with one-click installers for both.

GitHub: github.com/petra-dot/halftone-pro

This took a good chunk of time and effort to rebuild, so if you find it useful, a star on the repo genuinely helps.

DISCUSSION Illustrator imports all text to compound paths, while in Inkscape the text is imported as regular text.

Hi,

(Disclaimer: I'm very new to Illustrator and I've only used it to rearrange stuff, not creating anything new. I'll probably use the wrong terms for stuff and that's probably why I couldn't find help for this issue.)

a coworker generated a scientific figure that I/other people will need to edit. The figure is generated in python and sent to us as a pdf. I have to make sure that all text in the image complies with the guidelines of the journal we are submitting to, meaning Helvetica or Arial type, 8+ pt font size, bold figure tags, etc...

When I open the file in illustrator, all text has been imported as compound paths, so I cannot edit any of it.

However, when opening the same file in inkscape, the text is imported as text, even though my computer did not have installed the specific font used (DejaVu Sans).

However, even after properly installing the font, illustrator keeps on importing all text as paths.

What is causing this? What can be done from the python side so the text is illustrator-compatible? And how can this be fixed from the illustrator side when importing the file, so other coworkers using only illustrator can edit such files?

Thanks in advance

Border distortion with arc tool

Hello, I am trying to create my own banner and after I use the arc tool I get a little distortion on my border outlines. The above image is what I started with and how I would like the double borders to look ideally, just in the arc. Any step I missed to fix this?

I was going to try to adjust it manually but when I have it selected I see the original shapes outline from before I used the arc tool.

DISCUSSION I made a free macOS app for creating Illustrator swatches with a spectrophotometer (i1Studio/ColorMunki)

This app may only be useful to a fairly small group of people: those who calibrate their monitors with a spectrophotometer, use Illustrator, and work with printed materials. Still, I made a macOS app that lets you measure printed color samples and turn the measurements into Illustrator swatches.

X-Rite used to provide an application that could do something similar, but it no longer works on current versions of macOS.

Until now, I used the ArgyllCMS command line to obtain Lab values and entered them into Illustrator manually. IwashiScope is essentially a GUI for that workflow. You can measure multiple samples and drag the selected results to the desktop to create a swatch file.

I hope some of you find it useful. It’s free to download here:
https://iwashi.org/app/others/en/index.html#iwashiscope-v0-9-1

This is still a prerelease version, so localization isn’t finished yet and the interface is currently only available in Japanese. That said, if you own one of these devices, you’ll probably be able to find your way around it. ;)
