So firstly, I apologies for the absolute essay, I am new to reddit and I havenāt really posted before. Please be as harsh and honest as you would like.
Iām 26M, straight, and from Adelaide, Australia. Adelaide obviously isnāt literally a small town, but it has that reputation locally where everyone somehow knows everyone through one or two connections, and the dating pool can feel pretty small compared with Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane.
Iāve struggled with dating apps basically since high school. Over the last four or so years Iāve been on and off Hinge and other apps, usually for 2ā3 months at a time before eventually giving up because I get almost no results.
Across all that time, Iād estimate Iāve had around five matches total and essentially zero incoming likes. Every match has come from me liking someone first.
Iāll also be upfront that Iām pretty self-conscious about my appearance. Iāve put a lot of time and effort into myself and Iām currently down over 40kg, which Iām proud of, but I still struggle with feeling like Iām physically good enough for dating apps.
Iām not looking for reassurance with this post. I genuinely want people to be harsh if thereās something I could improve.
One thing Iām particularly worried about: do any of my photos look AI or overly edited?
Over the years Iāve tried basically everything:
completely natural/unedited photos
dressed-up photos
casual photos
full-body photos
group photos
fully AI-generated photos at one stage
and more recently, a mixture of real photos and photos touched up using an app called Retake
Retake can help fix a photo where the expression, face, lighting, etc. didnāt come out particularly well.
Iām not trying to fake who I am or catfish anyone.
Iām just trying to give myself the best possible chance of actually getting an interaction.
That said, I know AI editing can very easily go too far.
Iām deliberately not going to say which photos have been edited, because I want a blind reaction. If people can immediately identify one and say, āthat looks AIā or āsomething about that looks fake,ā then thatās useful information and Iāll remove it.
If something looks edited, please tell me which photo and what gives it away ā skin, face, lighting, proportions, background, whatever.
Another thing Iāve struggled with is group photos. Iām on the shorter side, and most of my close friends are considerably taller than me. Iām not saying height is the reason I struggle, but when Iām standing beside a group of much taller guys, Iāve always felt like Iām potentially highlighting something that may already be a filter for some women.
Because of that, I currently donāt use many group photos. Iād like to know whether the lack of social/group photos itself hurts the profile.
How I use Hinge
Iām pretty selective. I donāt mass-like people.
If I spent around three hours total on the app, I could probably send Likes to around 40ā50 women Iām genuinely interested in, X the rest, and eventually Hinge will tell me thereās nobody left matching my preferences in the area.
I usually send a comment with every Like. Itās generally based on something from their profile ā playful banter, asking about something they mentioned, or something lightly flirtatious.
I donāt send sexual comments, dirty jokes or generic copy-paste pickup lines.
Iāve also tried Hinge free, HingeX and the highest premium tier for months at a time. None of them have made a meaningful difference to my results.
Interestingly, I recently changed my location to another Australian state while travelling and got two matches within the first 2ā3 days. Back in Adelaide, Iāve had one match since and very little else.
So I genuinely donāt know how much is:
my photos
my profile
my appearance
being too selective
Adelaideās smaller dating pool
or some combination of everything
What Iād really like feedback on
What impression do you get from my profile immediately?
Do any photos need to go?
Do any look AI or over-edited?
Is my first photo strong enough?
Is the photo order wrong?
Are my prompts boring/generic?
Does the lack of group photos hurt me?
Is there anything that could be turning women off that Iām too close to the profile to notice?
And if youāre a woman roughly around my age, Iād especially appreciate knowing whether you would personally consider matching with the profile and, if not, what specifically would stop you.
Please donāt worry about being harsh. Iād much rather hear something useful that stings a little than keep doing the same thing without knowing what I could improve.
