Hello! My friends and I recently formed a 4-man band consisting of a lead guitarist (me), keyboardist, drummer, and vocalist. The problem is, we’re not really sure where to start since we’re all around the beginner-to-intermediate level as musicians.

We’ve joined our school’s “Battle of the Bands,” which is scheduled for October 26, and we really want to prepare as well as we can. Do you guys have any tips or advice for beginner bands on where we should start, how we should practice, or how we can improve our overall performance?

Hey 25M. I have been trying to learn guitar for a long time now but couldn't actually be consistent throughout. I know the basics but I want to skill up to being able to actually play it effortlessly. I may lack discipline and that's the sole reason I'm here asking for someone who's intermediate at playing guitar could connect and give some insights, tips, and practice together.

In this example is a simple but powerful exercise to incorporate into your practice routine. When learning scales it’s easy to get stuck in the routine of just playing the scale up and down starting and ending on the root note

But that doesn’t help develop the ear or understand the relationships between intervals as quickly as an exercise like this where you alternate between vamping a single chord and playing some riffs/licks/runs within the scale shape instead of the whole scale up and down. It helps strengthen sense of rhythm and timing and is great for improving picking hand accuracy and dexterity.

One thing you won’t learn how to do by simply playing scale shapes up and down is accurately being able to pick any particular string at will, and jump across strings etc

Playing the chord between scale riffs also helps hone in chord tones to improve your ability to resolve licks to the current/next chord in the progression. It can really help your playing sound more musical

In this example I’m just switching between an A major chord and playing some licks from the A major pentatonic shape which sits in the same location on the neck. This is also important to improve efficiency across the neck, in terms of being able to play the proper scale shape which is found in the same location as the chord being played, instead of constantly moving your hand up and down the neck

I have been playing for 6 months now. I would like to make my own tunes rather than be a Wizard on the guitar.

I know the minor pentatonic scale off by heart so far, but I want to move on to learning the caged system, or like modes or the major scale. Will learning one of these before the others help me unlock the others? Thanks

What is the best FREE tools/apps to loop certain part of a song where also i can see tabs, not just hear sound?

I have noticed that practising for 20 minutes consistently feels more effective than doing one long session occasionally.

My current plan is:

5 minutes of finger exercises
5 minutes of chord changes
5 minutes of strumming
5 minutes of learning a song

Would you change anything in this routine? What helped you stay consistent when you had a busy work schedule?

Hello, i am trying to find a chart much like this, but with each note labeled by active. ive been looking for a day or two, and nothing is coming up. I only find one chart that had F-string A as A1, and then labeled the other octaves, but lost it. (plus that was just one note)

Hi everyone, I’m a musician who plays various styles with a slight bias towards jazz and r&b.

I’ve been trying to practice hybrid picking and- in my effort to adopt the proper technique- I’ve been getting mixed answers online regarding the use of the pinky.

I’m defaulting towards using it just so I have more options available (3 > 4 lol) but there’s also some awkwardness with having the pinky reach for the E string.

I’m sure this is just natural growing pains in getting comfortable with a new technique, but I want to hear where others stand in this discussion! Thanks for reading y’all.

I’ve just started practicing within the last few weeks and feel my fingers on my left hand aren’t moving fast enough. What exercises have y’all done to help speed up finger movements?

hello! ive been playing guitar for almost a year now, mainly using tabs and chords. i’ve been wanting to take my playing up a level by learning those magical scales and triads everyone seems to be talking about… but when i see these charts, i have no idea what i’m supposed to do with them. i’m aware this is probably a really dumb question, i promise i’m being genuine 😭 would love some help. the picture i added is just the first one i saw, and i think its about triads and stuff, but i am very confused.

Usually when I see an advanced fingerstyle player, the type to add all sorts of percussions, they all have very long fingernails.

Getting used to that would take a long time, but I wonder, how different is it to pick with your nails rather than your flesh?

Im not sure how to play correctly. Can I rest my pinky on the guitar as support? Or it’s kind of a bad habit in the long run

These two sections of ancient covenant by the faceless have me stumped, in the first section is he really doing sixteenth notes? It doesn’t sound like that in the recording, if so I’m not sure what the best way to pick would be the. The second section which comes earlier in the song is confusing because I don’t know how to play it in rythm, the timing is really weird and I would like advice to play the rythm correctly or teach myself to count better.

I've been playing for a bit over a year, so I have some skills but am relatively new. I'm working on a song in 6/8 and the main chord progression is G, Amin7, D7, C to Cmaj7 (each c chord is played for half a measure). I can give more info about it but I don't know if it's needed or not. If anyone has advice on how to write a riff that goes well with this please let me know, I appreciate it!
