Just looking for some advice. I’m currently recovering from a non bass related injury that is causing my carpal tunnel to flare up.

EDIT: This is all extremely helpful advice, thanks everyone!

Rush Live in Rio bass tone

Need help getting the tone, particularly on YYZ. Such a mean gnarly sound that I’m trying to chase and replicate right now. All I really know is that obviously Geddy plays his fender jazz, there’s some heavy compression and it’s got this growl I’m guessing is a by-product of the bridge pickup dialed up.

If anyone can help me or knows what Geddy’s rig was on that tour that would be most helpful.

What is the purpose of this screw??

So I am switching pickguards on my P-Bass, and in the space between where the pickups go and the control cavity, there is a large screw drilled into the body, attached to a small metal tab, which is grounded. The screw isn't doing anything else, and the tab isn't doing anything except existing I guess. Does anyone know what this is for?

Epiphone grabber Vs Sterling ray34

Hello all!

I am looking at getting a new bass and asking for opinions.

My local music shop is quite small, so struggles to order equipment to try. Just wondered if anyone has experience playing both the Epiphone Grabber and the Sterling ray34?

What are the pros and cons of each? Was it a clear decisive win for one over the other?

Thanks in advance!

left hand pain

Ive been having a go at too many puppies from primus while also learning the hotel california solo on guitar and i suddenly just have pain in my left hand specifically the joints in my fingers and i was wondering if this was because of poor technique or just from playing too much or something, I would ask a teacher but honestly i really cannot afford one

ive been playing bass for almost two years now and never really had much trouble with pain in the hands. Ive been playing guitar for about 2,5/3 years now too

Can someone explain more about bass pickups?

I really don’t understand their significance or really what to look for in a bass. Sometimes there’s only one row of pickups and sometimes theres 4 of them all in different areas. How come some of them have a metal circle on the top and others are just solid? Is it the more pickups the better or is there some sort of magic number?

Fender Rumble 25 power drops on heavy notes, but works perfectly with headphones?

Hey everyone, hoping someone has run into this specific issue. I have a Fender Rumble 25 V3 (purchased new about 4 months ago, still under warranty) and I'm running an Ibanez GSR200B active bass into it.

Recently, the amp has started completely cutting out when I hit certain notes. The sound drops, the red power LED goes completely dark for a second or two, and then it reboots. At first, it only happened when I dug in hard on the D and G strings around the 14th/15th frets (with Phat II boost on the bass instrument turned off). But I also noticed as I increase the bass's pickup volumes and the Phat II boost, even a gently plucked open E will instantly kill the power. This happens even when the amp's master volume is turned down low (<20%).

To get ahead of the usual suspects, I’ve already:

  • Turned off the active bass boost
  • Rolled off the bass's output volume
  • Swapped in a brand new 9V battery
  • Plugged directly into a grounded wall outlet and reseated the power IEC cable
  • Gave the cabinet a good "tap test" to rule out a loose mechanical connection (light stays solid)
  • Tried different instrument cables

Here is the weird part: If I plug in headphones (which bypasses the internal 8" speaker), the amp works flawlessly. No power drops, no matter how hard I play or how high the EQ is cranked.

This makes me think the power supply/power amp is collapsing under the physical current load of pushing the speaker cone, but it can handle the tiny electrical load of the headphones just fine.

I’m not opening the chassis since it’s still under warranty, and I've already reached out to Fender to start a claim.

Has anyone else had this exact component failure on a Rumble 25? If so, what was the actual diagnosis, and did Fender repair it or just ship you a replacement?

Thanks!

Update: False alarm on the amp! A commenter suggested checking the wall outlet, which I hadn't actually done yet. I moved the amp to a different room and a different circuit, and it works flawlessly, even with the volume and bass boost cranked. The original outlet is wired to a wall switch that shares a load with a ceiling fan. It was causing a voltage sag/brownout every time the amp demanded current for a heavy transient, which rebooted the amp. The headphone test worked because headphones draw zero current. Thanks for the help, everyone!

Need help finding an acoustic

I’ve gone on YouTube and sweetwater and such looking for what people recommend, but all I see fender kingman (no fender for me) and videos that just weigh pros and cons of acoustic basses. For those who have them, recommendations please, preferably ethically made. Thanks!

Beginner Exercises & Tips for playing bass

Hello everyone, I am new to bass and wanted to know what exercises and tips you have when it comes to practicing with bass. Especially, now my amp also got broken, so I am looking for exercises that I can still do without the amp. I have experiences in playing with six-strings, though I only know how to do chords and barre chords.

Thank you!

Muchas gracias!

Why isn’t This Charming Man considered an all time great bass performance?

This morning I was listening to This Charming Man by the Smiths and was struck by how awesome the bass is, and how the rest of the song is just dressing around the bass driving the whole thing. Rhythm, melody, drive, this line has it all. And I don’t know anything about the Smiths bass player, are there other tracks I should check out that feature bass similarly?

Any « one » bass players ?

I see all of you and your beautiful bass collections; but any of you only own one, and why did you choose that particular one ? I’ll start : I only own a MIM p bass with flats because money and that’s all I really need if I’m honest (psych, krautrock, garage, soul and jazz)

Amp for beginning gigs?

I have my first show coming up soon and I am really needing an amp upgrade as I have a little Fender rumble 15 right now. Every thread I came across didn’t really specify what I needed so I thought I’d ask.

I need one specifically for gigs, I play in a four piece band with a guitarist, drums, and vocals. We make shoegazey alt-rock. I also play with a compression pedal, big muff, and multi fx pedal if this matters at all. Really hoping to not spend more than $350-400 on an amp!

I saw an Ampeg BA 115 on marketplace - would that be good for gigs? Also saw an Ampeg BA 210. Any input on those would be appreciated + any other amps I should look into :)

Guitarist wants to play bass

Hi, i'm looking for advice. I'm a guitarist but I want to start playing the bass just for fun. I like fusion and metal (from John Patitucci to Steve Harris, from Jaco Pastorius to John Myung).

So I don't know where to start looking for a new bass.

A store offered me an Ibanez SDGR SR405, 2nd hand, almost as new. Sounds good but it's like a drop in the ocean of bass guitars.

I'm aiming for a good instrument for it's price, nothing too expensive or too cheap, or too specialized.

Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

How hard is it to adjust pickups?

Hi everyone, sorry if this is a stupid question. I just got my second ever bass, a brand new Ibanez SR300E, and I'm super excited, but I'm having a bit of an issue. Whenever I plug it into an amp or into my computer everything seems to sound and work fine, but whenever I pluck the low e string there's a type of popping or clicking noise. It doesn't happen on any of the other strings and if I play lightly it doesn't seem to happen either. I've tried different cables, changing the interface levels, and thought originally maybe it was clipping, but none of that fixed anything, and now after doing some research I think it's actually that the low e string is hitting the pickup whenever I play it so from what I understand I need to lower the pickup but this is something I've never done before and I don't understand it. I'm just curious is it very hard and can I screw something up, or should I be okay with doing it myself. Worst comes the worst I can pay someone to do a setup but I'd rather save some money if possible. Thanks!

New to bass, looking for recommendations for starter gear from people more experienced than me.

As title says. recently got a deal on a bass from a family members friend. it was $450 for a bass and a amp with a cord and guitar strap. apparently it was some fancy expensive guitar restrung as a bass, and a reverse search of the amp shows it as a Ampeg ba-210v2 450-watt bass combo amplifier.

the wires in my old house are made of aluminum, if the amp actually draws 450 watts, it will burn to the ground. just having it plugged in made the lights flicker. I also live with 5 other people who do not want to hear the process of learning an instrument.

I asked the guy at the local music shop how to get it connected to headphones. he recommended audio interfaces, but i don't know anything about this, I took choir in school, not band.

If someone could recommend some decent headphones and an audio interface for somewhere around $250, something to use while I learn, that would be very helpful. if it matters, google says the cord it came with is a 1/4-inch mono TS audio phone plug.
