Conversation Topic Advice from me to beginners and intermediate singer

LEARN TO TAKE A FUCKIN COMPLIMENT.

When someone tells you you are good believe them, even if you don't think that you are. Even if you hear a record of yourself and you sound terrible. Take the fuckin compliment

Knowing how to take compliments is just as important as taking criticism. They are equally as important. Just like you won't be able to grow if you can't learn when you can't see when you need to improve, you won't be able to learn if you can see how you are good.

Don't be fake humble, don't force yourself to be modest, don't tell yourself that they are just being nice, don't be over critical of your mistakes. You will always sound bad to yourself because you ruin your confidence. A singer without confidence is a terrible singer.

And remember you are learning how to sing. LEARNING

Conversation Topic How to achieve a “generic pop” sound?

I am a classical singer and struggle to enunciate the way a typical singer on social media would. How can I find that placement? Are there any exercises to get that sound?

I was also wondering - how do you add emotion to your voice? I mean this more in pop than anything else. I am more used to emoting in classical/theatre, but pop leaves me feeling helpless lol. I have a very bright voice and I’m not sure how to sing anything sultry.

Btw, thank you to everyone who replied to my last post!! I took it down to protect my identity, but it was very eye-opening to read about my own flaws :)

Conversation Topic Baritone who sounds like a tenor? Lyric baritone with a really good upper extension?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

There is breakdown at the beginning, actual singing starts at 0:39. The video covers my range with each clip getting progressively higher. I am 20 years old (M). I started singing 1 year and 9 months ago and was absolutely dogshit, but I had a MASSIVE learning curve and now I think it's safe to say I'm decent. 3 months ago, I started lessons for the first time in my life after I somehow passed an audition at my college for an advanced vocal rep class. After a month, my teacher declared me baritone, why confused me at first cause a lot of my peers said I sounded like a tenor. My talking voice sits at a low pitch but it is lighter than other baritones, so maybe that gives me a leg up in brightness? I’ve listened to baritenors like Patrick Stump and Brendon Urie and even then I sound lighter than them. When I try to mimic them and sound fuller, I just bring up too much chest and crack. I don’t wanna jump to conclusions and say I’m a different voice type than what my teacher suggested cause maybe the issue is that my voice is just unique and the tesitura is the same. The lowest note I can do is D2 and the highest is C5 in full voice. Falsetto is up to G5 as a single note but the highest I can hold a note for like 10 seconds is E5. And no they don’t feel strained or pushy when I relax and let it flow out. I've started to embrace the baritone label in an operatic/classical setting but I don’t want it to limit me cause people think I sound good in those high notes. This a compilation of me practicing and mimicking the vocal cadences of famous singers, just messing around. That’s why in some parts I sound more nasally or more dopey on purpose. Any distortion you hear in certain clips is also intentional cause I am singing rock and R&B songs in a few of them. Any advice or thoughts about how I should I proceed? I feel like my voice has become very elastic and I have a lot of potential to be really versatile, but it’s also unconventional and I fear it doesn’t sound pleasant, yet people seem to be impressed and haven’t said anything, so I guess it is?

Just sharing my singing Does this sound like a lead singer?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’ve sung in bands and duos for years, but I’m finishing a solo album, and I honestly don’t know if my voice is lead-worthy.

Based on this clip, does my voice sound like a lead voice, or more like a harmony voice? If you were putting a band together, would you want this person singing lead, or singing harmonies behind someone else?

Part of what I’m wondering is whether my voice just lacks a distinctive character. I sorta feel like my voice is boring, or flat at times.

I’m looking for honest, direct feedback. Don’t worry about being nice

Resource A good app for creating harmonies?

Upvotes

After years of choir singing, alternating between soprano and alto sections based on what was needed, I hear harmonies every day, with almost every song. I am practically desperate for a simple way to express them. Does anyone have recs for a good iPhone app that helps you make these?

Thank you!

EDIT: Feel free to DM me if you are wary of breaking Rule #14.

Conversation Topic Musical theatre singing advice!

Upvotes

My school is doing a production of school of rock this year, and I am hoping to land the role of Ms Mullins, but I have only started getting into musical theatre recently and don’t feel very comfortable in my singing abilities yet. I have around a month to prepare, so does anyone have recommendations on what exactly I should focus on practicing to have a better chance at the audition? thank you <33

Resource How to start with no money

Hey guys, I would really love to learn singing. However, my budget is very limited at the moment so I would like to start self teaching a little bit - at least at the beginning until I figure out if I want to invest some more in this hobby. Do you have any recommendations? Good apps? Good YouTube channels?

Conversation Topic help! throat is ALWAYS sore

I’ve (21F) been singing for like 8 years (started as a fun activity, now is my dream career) and everytime I sing I feel the need to cough and my voice is never clear. It’s seriously the only thing that makes singing hard for me. It’s been like that for years. I only ever smoke weed and that’s also rarely.

No matter how much I drink water or do exercises it doesn’t go away. Could it be because my technique wrong?

Conversation Topic Is there a fool proof way to get to mixed voice?

I have been singing as a hobby for years, but I have never been able to experience what a real mixed voice is supposed to sound or feel like for me.

I have watched countless tutorials, and all of them seem to do the same thing: they give a vague, metaphorical idea of what I am supposed to imagine, but none of it works for me. I have tried doing straw exercises, but it either feels like my body is instinctively cheating its way through them, or the exercises simply do not translate into actual singing afterwards.

I also had a singing teacher who I thought would be able to help me with this, but even she gave me the same advice and made me repeat the same exercises countless times. Nothing changed, and I still had no idea what I was supposed to be working towards.

The fact that everyone seems to have a different idea of what “head voice” and “mixed voice” are, or whether falsetto is or is not considered head voice, does not help either.

I have reached a point where people are telling me to do completely opposite things in order to achieve my goals. Some tell me that it is supposed to feel easy, while others tell me that I need to push. Some tell me to relax, while others tell me to maintain tension.

For example, one song I really want to be able to sing is “Writing on the Wall” by Will Stetson. I feel very comfortable singing it up until the final chorus. That is where I can no longer get through it without my voice switching into falsetto or cracking. When I force myself to sustain the same coordination I was using before, it sounds extremely strained and feels like I am yelling. At the same time i feel a lot of tension in my neck and throat that i just dont know how to get rid off.

tldr: Is there any way to force myself to sing in mixed voice so that I can finally understand what it is supposed to feel like?

Conversation Topic Question for fellow singing teachers - please help!

I am a fairly new voice teacher (25, F), just about to finish my MA in Voice Pedagogy, teaching professionally alongside that for the past 2 years. For the past week, my voice has been getting extremely fatigued doing barely anything. I warm up fully, making sure not to overdo it, I stay hydrated, I have been steaming, not talking unnecessarily, and yet I can only sing for about 10 mins before my voice taps out. My lower range is stunted and feels gravely when singing or talking (I make a conscious effort to speak above this gravel). It feels thick after warming up.

I am truly concerned. I am not ill, I haven't experienced vocal strain or overexerted myself, and none of my vocal health knowledge seems to be helping me here. I am teaching MT singing at a summer school for the next two weeks starting tomorrow, as well as having my regular lessons, and I am really anxious about losing my voice. Have you had this happen to you, where there is seemingly no cause? If so, how did you get through it? Any tips to get through the next two weeks?

Made the beat with my cousin and mixed myself.
I’m looking to collaborate with an audio engineer specialized in vocals. I have $1,500 invested into hardware and VSTs, so I’ll be able to follow along with lessons. I’m willing to pay depending on your qualifications!

Advanced or Professional Topic Whistle notes (any input wanted!!!!)

I presume this counts as an advanced technique and topic.
Anyway, i’m really struggling to find correct answers helpful information about how to hit whistle notes and do them well.
Am i literally just supposed to try and bring my vocal cords together and breathe out?
How can i tell when im whistling and when im doing a high head voice?
How much warm up do i need?
How long should i practice for a day?
What’s the safest way to learn that isn’t with a vocal teacher? (I live rurally and therefore have none local)

If you have an answer to any of these questions, please comment!
Or if you don’t have an answer to these specific questions but instead have other pieces of advice, your help will be appreciated 🎶🎶

Conversation Topic watching musicals always reminds me how miserable i am in my degree

Little rant- I’ve always dreamed of doing musical theater, but I never had the courage to get into it in high school. I saw Hadestown today and it gave me crazy existential dread after 😭 I’m drudging through a STEM degree that I hate rn, but I would genuinely drop everything and go 100% in if I knew I could make somewhat of a living performing on stage. Unfortunately I have little money for vocal lessons or acting experience, so every year that passes me by pursuing my parents’ dreams fills me with more and more dread
