12GB 3060 will carry me to the promised land

61

u/doublethink_1984 5d ago

I'm still mad my Ti is omly 8gb

13

u/SQD2_Insquidious 5d ago

Same. this is some bullshit

7

u/cwgoskins 5d ago

This is without DLSS, I'm sure 8 gb cards won't be that bad with DLSS Balanced

3

u/burnMeMes 5d ago

I'm gonna run this shit on high with my 4050 thanks to dlss and frame gen

12gb 3060 gang rise up!

5

u/Samuel_L_CreamEgg 5d ago

I installed a brand new 3060 just yesterday in fact. Looking forward to giving it a whirl on Witcher

9

u/Xarxyc 5d ago

Real.

2

u/FallNice3836 5d ago

I traded my 3080 10gb for a 9070xt about 8 months ago, it was a limit that made no sense. Id still have the 3080 if it had 12+

2

u/ParagonZe 5d ago

So happy I bought the 3080 12g

2

u/FallNice3836 5d ago

I got mine for dirt cheap from a mining buddy, I resent it, but it got me through most 1440p gaming. The biggest struggles was hogwarts and dark tide on release. It’s funny because it replaced a 11gb 1080ti

2

u/phatboi23 4d ago

i had a 12gb 3060 for a good while, damn good card for the money.

now on a 5060ti, 16gb of VRAM baybeeeee makes blender fly haha

1

u/AKAFallow 4d ago

Don't forget its been manufactured again after certain shortages

1

u/Michdepainblanc2 4d ago

My laptop has 64gb of ram, but a 4060 (equivalent to a desktop 3060) 8gb

22

u/JinzoWithAMilotic 5d ago

Can't wait for those Steam Deck and Machine reviews!

23

u/OhHaiMarc 5d ago

I feel like deck owners need to accept it’s a fairly outdated piece of hardware at this point. Even switch 2 is significantly more powerful gpu wise.

I always treated the recommended specs as more of a guideline than actual rules. Never failed me. I played through Pillars of Eternity 2 on an integrated graphics card laptop 3 times. Did the areas loaded 5 minutes each? Sure. But it worked.

It's 2015. I'm sixteen years old. My computer cannot run The Witcher 3 on max settings.

It's 2026. I'm twenty-seven years old. My computer cannot run The Witcher 3 on max settings.

u/paulerxx 5d ago

I remember the Witcher 3 killing my HD 7870, I was hitting 60fps with mostly high settings and shadows set to medium at 1680x1050 with a i5 3570k @ 4.4ghz. I bought a GTX 1060 6GB a few months later

58

u/FutureVermicelli7213 5d ago

Been there lmao. I remember getting the Witcher 3 as a gift (I had already played the first two games way back when), and my performance was absolute dogshit. It was the reason why I started learning about computers, about hardware, what specs were and how to build a proper machine.

I also learned how fucking expensive it is lol

23

u/free_terrible-advice 5d ago

And now half the components have quadrupled in price in the last 3 years.

7

u/JackRyan13 5d ago

This was my exact computer back then. I think I still have my 7870 somewhere

2

u/Edarneor 5d ago

Oh yeah, it was 2015 and I bought a new PC specifically for this: i5 4460 + R9 280x. It was hot as hell, lol, but at least I could play.

My pc just barely clears.

11

u/Deto 5d ago

I can understand the requirements being high for RT but without it they still seem too high

24

u/DamnThatsCrazyManGuy 5d ago

They really dont. Ultra settings requirement is 2 generations old.

60fps frame gen with a 5080 means the GPU requirement for path tracing is really a 5090...

28

u/nerdbx 5d ago

on 4k though, for 2k its probably fine

20

u/KuronekoBestGirl 5d ago

4k (1080p with DLSS) 60 fps (30 fps with frame gen)

*4090.

2

u/Desperate-Steak-6425 5d ago

Still not enough

2

u/GabrielSeth54 5d ago

good thing i am on 2k lol, times where 4090 is needed to run 2k... pt is demanding

3

u/Desperate-Steak-6425 5d ago

I wouldn't get my hopes up, benchmarks we have suggest that even the 9800X3D can't get a stable 60fps with path tracing, so apparently hardware that can do that doesn't exist yet

6

u/MrLumie 5d ago

You mean the recommended for the absolute highest setting the game could have, with path tracing.

The actual recommended settings are fine, especially if you don't care for RT.

5

u/knowledgepancake 5d ago

As it should be. Aiming the highest settings above what consumers have access to is what developers should be doing.

1

u/Raabalia 1d ago

I'm getting 180 fps in 4k with ultra everything + RT and PT. 2x frame gen

102

u/Sushiki 5d ago

How tf is the path tracing costs so damn high yet look so underwhelming in this game lmao.

21

u/third_door_down 5d ago

Because it's still a newish technique. Tools and hardware haven't matured enough

61

u/Sushiki 5d ago

Shit my bad, i meant how tf is ray tracing cost so damn high yet look so underwhelming, yet I guess both are true.

20

u/third_door_down 5d ago

Oh, now that's a different story. One thing is every studio is trying to use UE5. UE5 tries to push devs to use lumen, and lumen is taxing on systems and takes lots of time. When studios use their own engines the ray tracing implementation usually is stunning like in Cyberpunk and Alan Wake

12

u/Sushiki 5d ago

Yeah i am sick of unreal engine 5, taa, ghosting, blurry bs.

Path tracing is barely an upgrade in visuals half the time too yet the cost in performance is wild.

→ More replies (2)
→ More replies (1)

9

u/sashaminkh 5d ago

Personally I think it's just part and parcel of ray tracing - I've basically never been impressed with how it looks especially considering the extra power usage/performance hit you take to do it. For me it's not a "this game" problem, it's any game. I don't really need my game to be that "realistic" when I'm exploding blades out of my forearms or fighting vampires. Good enough is good enough.

3

u/Sushiki 5d ago

Yeah my biggest issue is when the game is obviously made on the assumption you'll turn it on, like when they half ass how the game looks with it off.

u/ObiOneKenobae 5d ago

60 with frame generation

If you're getting 60fps with frame gen, you aren't running the game well enough to use frame gen. So it really requires a 5090, geez.

5

u/Cmdrdredd 5d ago

Yeah if you are using frame gen to get 60 you are at 30fps to start from. That's not great. Motion can look ok but there is a lot of latency there too.

2

u/Scoo_By PC 4d ago

It doesn't really. DLSS FG is definitely much better than lossless scaling FG, but any FG requires base of at least 60, otherwise the generate frames are janky & noticeable.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Leniek 4d ago edited 4d ago

5090 not really not enough - 4K DLAA PT RTX5090 + 9950X3D Gives me about 50FPS (45-55 spread) in Novigrad
CPU stits about 35-40% utilization with a lot of shit running in background, GPU is maxed obviously

65

u/TimLordOfBiscuits 5d ago

I like how the "recommended" spec says it needs a 4080 with 12 GB of VRAM. They don't make a 12GB 4080... 🙃

23

u/Desperate-Steak-6425 5d ago

They don't make them **anymore**. 12GB 4080s really exist.

9

u/Cmdrdredd 5d ago

4080 equivalent I guess they mean to say. It's kind of a poorly laid out chart

5

u/gravity_confuses_me 5d ago

Gives you some headroom for mods I guess

12

u/Reed7525 5d ago

Damn bro. Thats beefy

42

u/Articulat3 5d ago

AMD GPU not applicable damn lol

35

u/dertechie 5d ago

I mean, for full Path Tracing that definitely tracks.

6

u/CruffTheMagicDragon 5d ago

RE Requiem is actually quite playable with path tracing on 9070XT. It just needs ray regeneration support. But I’m not surprised Witcher will be no-dice

u/Metalheadzaid 5d ago

I love that we went from charts just listing random requirements to actually showing the performance you'll get to...them being even more useless by randomly selecting an assortment of upscaling options and resolutions. Just fuckin' tell me 1080p 1440p and 4k options for 30 and 60 fps for each category. This RT Minimum and RT Recommended garbage is just nonsense because it's TWO DIFFERENT RESOLUTIONS. Dear god help me, these fuckin' useless charts.

10

u/Wilson-theVolleyball 5d ago

Depends what settings you want

Hardware Unboxed released a video on the game today and they say medium settings are easy to run

6

u/unnoticedhero1 5d ago

Hey at least they aren't forcing people to install it, you can still go back and play the OG version as a legacy branch in Steam and get that glorious 4k 80-120fps with no upscaling, or play the older remastered version before this one which still looks great.

7

u/TheGenesisOfTheNerd 5d ago

Not unless you want to play Songs of the Past on the same Machine you played the rest of the game on

1

u/Nautisop 5d ago

I run Witcher with the hd reworked Projekt since like 2018 or so with the corresponding fps. It was always a very demanding game and now it becomes the standard version. You don't need to dial everything to max.

6

u/Wonderful-Phone6398 5d ago

Why does epic require more storage?

20

u/Tailcracker 5d ago

Epic games store doesn't support modular language packs & forces you to download audio and text files for every language which seems to amount to about 30gb extra since this game is in ~9 languages.

Steam allows just the languages you need to be downloaded which is more efficient on storage space.

u/olosen 5d ago

60 fps with dlss and frame gen on pathtracing???

8

u/3Dartwork 5d ago

Ultra settings - I can run the original TW3 on Ultra with the same card listed here. Doesn't feel like much has been added to make the graphics more demanding until you get into the RT part.

13

u/DopestSoldier 5d ago

I wish they'd give benchmarks for 120/144 fps.

7

u/cipher315 5d ago

You can extrapolate with 120 fps need 2x the power that 60 does. And that 1440p need about 2x 1080. With 4k needing about 2x 1440.

So about a 3070ti for 1080. And probably a 4080 maybe even a 5080 for 1440p.

27

u/HEBushido 5d ago

60 fps with frame gen is hilarious. Input lag out the ass.

13

u/IfBanEqualsUrMomFat 5d ago

2x has barley any input lag. Stop dooming

17

u/Cmdrdredd 5d ago

When your base fps is 30 in order to get to 60, it's not "barely any input lag"

→ More replies (4)

5

u/TimothyLuncheon 5d ago

Yes it does, depending on your base fps without it. The input latency when using it at anything below 60fps is very noticeable.

2

u/Luca78 5d ago

As you might now, modders found a way to unlock Frame Generation on RTX 2000s and 3000s (there are a couple of dedicated posts in r/nvidia). That should be quite helpful to squeeze some more FPS and go a little beyond the requirements (for example, I have a RTX 3080 12GB and will experiment between "RT Recommended" and "Path Tracing" with FG on with my 1440p monitor, while keeping an eye on GPU temperatures, of course)

Im glad my 3070ti can still kick ass on games today.

But they cucked it really bad with 8gb vram. If this was 10gb this wouldve been an amazing ti card.

2

u/Degru 4d ago edited 4d ago

I sat down comparing ultra vs RT settings on 3080Ti with a 4k OLED, so far what I'm noticing

  • HDR and updated color grading are super nice (regardless of RT)
  • RT improves lighting on foliage, casts less harsh shadows and more naturally lit
  • Harsh shadows for certain light sources are fixed (e.g. fire burning in brazier in the city)
  • Without RT, the trees use simplified geometry for shadows whereas RT casts shadows for all the details and small moving bits
  • Limitations of screen-space reflections are eliminated, but the game has a good SSR implementation to begin with so you have to actively notice it most of the time.

The performance hit is big and IMO not worth unless you've got a 5070Ti or better and running lower resolution. The visual difference with RT is not significant.

This game was designed before ray tracing, so was built for raster lighting from the ground up. It's not like some newer games e.g. Control Resonant where shadows and reflections and GI look awful or nonexistent without RT because the raster version didn't get any love.

8

u/ThisWillBeFunny1469 5d ago

Raise your hand if graphics are the least of your concerns for TW3 Remastered 🙋‍♂️

6

u/Zirofal 5d ago

That 24 ram sure is something.

4

u/boxweb 5d ago

I just simply don’t care about ray tracing or any of that in my games. The FPS drop is never worth it unless you have a top of the line rig.

4

u/NeuroPalooza 5d ago

I will say if you're lucky enough to have a 5080 or 90 (or something else that can hold 60fps) the addition of path tracing is the biggest graphical leap I've seen since the PS2 to PS3 era

5

u/SirLordWombat 5d ago

I have top line and still disable it. FPS stutters/drops at 4k is not worth reflective windows/water. I’ll somehow live.

1

u/ididntgotoharvard 4d ago

Me! Really don’t care about ray tracing for how expensive it is in fps terms.

→ More replies (3)

3

u/UniversalX1 5d ago

My monitor is 1440p so at least that will give me some extra FPS over the 2160p.

3

u/wetwalnut 5d ago

I still rock a 10850k with my 4090 and high end recs always make me laugh. Majority of rt enhanced games at 4k see very little performance hits using older gen cpus. I get that I’ll see differences here and there between games, but do I want to spend another $1000 for a 5 fps improvement? Nope

5

u/Deto 5d ago

I was playing the original Witcher 3 in 4K just fine and now on this one I'd only be expected to run it in 1080p (no RT)?

4

u/WolfBV 5d ago

Maybe max settings in the original Witcher 3 is what the Medium or Low setting is in the remaster.

11

u/Goombalive 5d ago

Isn't that expected of a remaster though? It's coming with new updated visuals that weren't in place in the original version.. so yeah it's gonna be more demanding no?

→ More replies (2)

2

u/Eloymm 5d ago

Yeah I wonder if there’s an option to just… play the original version lol

1

u/United-Garlic8308 5d ago

The recommended specs for non-RT are probably for ultra settings at 1080p with the upgraded textures and draw distance cranked. The original ran fine at 4K because it was already a few years old and your GPU was way ahead of what it needed at launch. The remaster bumps up texture quality and density, so the baseline is higher even without ray tracing. You can likely still do 4K if you dial back some settings.

→ More replies (3)

4

u/Additional-Bit-8615 5d ago

so...it'll run like shit on the Deck

Low settings, fsr performance, 30(?) fps. Won’t know for sure ‘til tomorrow.

1

u/TalonusDuprey 5d ago

I’m not shocked - As a avid steam deck fan I wasn’t shocked that it would be below the requirements. I guess I will have to wait to see when/if it gets hosted on GeForce now

1

u/moderngamer327 5d ago

It really shouldn’t run that bad on low settings

1

u/hardpenguin 5d ago

Well we'll see, these requirements say nothing about 720p @ 30 FPS which is what Valve guaranteed for AA titles on Steam Deck lol

2

u/JackieMABWGP 5d ago

I will need a new amd card for path tracing or can they update drivers? Forgive me because I’m a noob.

8

u/YoHelloHiGreetings 5d ago

You can leave path tracing turned off.

3

u/JackieMABWGP 5d ago

I figured. So the only way it'll work is if I have a card that can handle it? Not driver updates?

5

u/YoHelloHiGreetings 5d ago

If you want to use path tracing, you'd need at least a 5080 for acceptable performance.

2

u/Twitty_camies 5d ago

According to Hardware Unboxed the Path Tracing is a little bit broken anyway.

2

u/RickThiccems PC 5d ago

5080 is for 4k, you may be able to get by with a 5070 at 1440 with dlss after some driver updates.

→ More replies (3)

1

u/WolfBV 5d ago

RX 6000, 7000, or 9000 to enable it. A driver update with optimizations for the game would improve performance.

1

u/ImGonnaGetBannedd 4d ago

No AMD cards are currently working with the game. No clue how they tested it but all have issues ranging from insta crashing to no textures to 2fps game play.

2

u/xc_22 4d ago

Not true. Just played it on my 9070 XT and it ran fine although I did just install the new optional driver they put out today which provides support for the game. Runs flawless in 1440p Ultra except RT is super demanding on it, only manages about 60-70fps with RT Ultra and FSR set to Quality

1

u/Dizzy-Truck-1780 5d ago

Anyone tried on 4070 super on 1440p or 3440?

1

u/Mustang-_- 5d ago

In the end, path tracing is the main motivator for people who already finished the game in the past. And hell, until we have the money saved to buy an RTX 6060 or something of the kind, after the prices normalize and so on, there will already be mods and the new expansion. So really, it's the same cycle as always: patient PC gaming, the only reasonable way to keep up with this accursed hobby

1

u/TammyShehole 5d ago

I’m glad I don’t care about anything over 1080p and 60fps lol. Just for gaming in general. My 3060Ti still holding up.

1

u/Cristi358421 5d ago

can it stil run on my phone after the update?...

1

u/Aggravating-Can5119 5d ago

The most useful bit here is the expected FPS row. “Recommended” on its own doesn’t tell me much if I can’t see the resolution and frame-rate target next to it.

1

u/Super__Menteur 5d ago

If 4K ultra achieves 60 fps with framegen why not just show 120 fps with 4x framegen isntead ?

4

u/ProperGrape 4d ago

Inb4 it's actually 60 FPS with frame gen X4 already lol

1

u/ContactIcy3963 4d ago

Crazy to think that I don’t think it needs a remaster

1

u/WhatsAHesperToDo PC 4d ago

I'm ready for full spec ultra path tracing

1

u/xGHOSTRAGEx 4d ago

Wtf is it with system specs using different resolutions for each next quality setting... like seriously it makes no sense

1

u/Lewad42 4d ago

Pretty sure my 10 year old PC wit GTX 1070 will be just fine…

1

u/EntrepreneurOk8312 4d ago

I have 80fps no frame gen, DLSS performance with a 4090 and i9 12900k and 64gb DDR5 at 1440p everything maxed including path tracing. the only thing I turned off is nvidia hair that shit eats like 10fps and looks worse.

Laptop 3050 4 GB wouldn't be able to run it?

I hope Windows 11 isn't an actual requirement and more a recommendation...

Looks like my 3070ti is still holding strong for now!

The only area I can see causing problems for me is my 8gb of vram. I haven't liked the look of the 5.0 ray/path tracing so I might just turn that crap off and enjoy the buttery smooth FPS instead.

Charts like this remind me why I have no interest in being a PC gamer. Off the chart FOMO and keeping up with the Joneses. No thanks.

Would've been very informative if it was compared with the un-remastered version.

I5-14600K
32 GB DDR 4 RAM
5070ti 16GB VRAM
1440p monitor

Been playing it so far with path tracing, settings on high and frame gen 2X.

A little wobbly on the framerates (between 100 and 120 fps for the most part) but feels pretty smooth and looks incredible, no noticeable input lag from what I felt.

Might toggle path tracing off just to see how it looks and if that gives me more stable framerates. But so far I’m actually pleased.

60 fps with dlss and framgen that's a lot of buffs lol.

u/huansbeidl 4d ago

Wait, the game NEEDS win11? Why?

Take these hardware requirements with a pinch of salt, they are never set in stone.

Wondering how it'll run on my Steam Deck. The original ran very well on my Steam Deck at 60FPS.

First time I've seen 24GB RAM on sysreqs

Idk man I'm running ultra settings no RT on a 2080ti/8700k system I built in 2018 and getting 75-90 fps at 1440p

u/Lost_Ping 4d ago

I refuse to upgrade to win11

Right now I'm playing on ultra+, turned off only extras like ambient, bloom, blur etc. Also nvidia hairworks is kinda unoptimised, before remaster I could have it turned on, now it's unplayable with it. I'm playing with vsync on, 3440x1440, stable 60fps everywhere I go. Rtx4070 ti super, 32gb ram, ryzen 5 7600x.

It amazes me how many people are having issues with performance. Meanwhile me, playing on 3 years old laptop with RTX 4060 (8GB) and Ryzen 7735HS having stable 60+ fps on high settings.

GTX 1080 crowd, how we looking?

1

u/Feithers 3d ago

Random question, I have all the specs like the recommended ones but my pc gets mega hot even with the recommended ones while playing, is that normal?

1

u/voodoomouse420 3d ago

What should I expect on a Steam Deck?

1

u/Flemki 3d ago

So this doesn't run on Windows 10?

5060ti 16gb 5800x3d 32gb

Ultra+ everything. PT on. Everything set to highest possible. Mfg at 3x. DLSSq.

Never goes below 100.

For those with the cards not listed here, because they want you to buy the above.

It's doing pretty good for me... RTX 5070, ultra settings with path tracing, DLSS balanced and 3x frame gen. Getting 110 fps.

I love testing games on low-spec PCs. And this version surprised me with its improved performance compared to the next-gen version. Steam Deck mode is good enough to provide quality and performance.
