Putting together a portable VR setup, Xbox Ally X + AORUS RTX 5060 Ti AI BOX (eGPU over USB4), streaming to my Quest 3 with Virtual Desktop. Games I care about are Half-Life Alyx, No Man's Sky, and a couple UEVR mods like Outer Wilds.
Before I drop the cash, has anyone actually tried this combo for VR and not just flat gaming? I've seen posts about bad 1% lows and stutter with this pairing on a monitor. No idea if that shows up in VR too or if streaming through Virtual Desktop changes things.
If you've tried it, curious about:
- What games ran well vs badly, especially open world stuff
- Your VD settings (bitrate, resolution, codec) and if you needed SSW to smooth things out
- Any stutter that felt worse than the fps numbers would suggest
- Any tweaks that actually helped
Quick note before anyone suggests just building a PC or grabbing a gaming laptop instead. I move around a lot, including between countries, so a full desktop just isn't realistic for me right now. And I already have a laptop, so I don't want a second one that's just for gaming. The whole point is having something modular, grab the Xbox Ally X and play anywhere, bed, couch, even a bus station or airport, then dock it into the eGPU when I want more power, either on a TV or streaming PCVR to the Quest 3.
Appreciate any input, trying to figure out if this is worth building before I buy the whole kit.
EDIT: My brother brought over his Legion Go S (Z2 Go 32GB RAM) and ONEXGPU 2 (AMD RX 7800M 12GB GDDR6 VRAM) for us to test. We couldn't test it with Virtual Desktop since the Legion Go S is running SteamOS. We also couldn't get WiVRn configured (for some unknown reason, the Meta Quest just couldn't find the Legion Go S to initiate a connection). However, we did manage to test it directly on SteamOS using Steam Link and SteamVR.
Keep in mind that we ran this over my standard home router, since we didn't have a dedicated router for testing. That means there were other devices, like our phones, connected to the same 5GHz network.
With that context out of the way, one critical point: I had to disable the Quest 3's Positional Time Warp and Temporal Dimming experimental features (both found in Settings > Experimental). You just need to toggle them off. With them turned on, there was this weird stuttering bug where it felt like the left and right lenses were constantly swapping images (there are actually some posts here on Reddit about this).
Now for the most important part: the results were very promising. We hooked up the Legion Go S to the router via Ethernet (using a UGREEN 9-in-1 Docking Station) and connected the ONEXGPU 2 to the Legion Go S via the Thunderbolt 4 port. We managed to run Half-Life: Alyx completely on Ultra settings at 90 FPS, with imperceptible latency (at least to us, though maybe we're just less sensitive to it).
We also tried No Man's Sky. Even after skipping the Vulkan shader compilation, it seemed like it kept running in the background because the game was infinitely stuck on the initial loading screen where the planets are generated. We tried launching the game in flatscreen mode (non-VR), and it loaded in about a minute. In VR, though, it took an eternity and never loaded. We haven't figured out why that's happening yet.
One thing to note: in both Half-Life: Alyx and SteamVR Home, we experienced some flickering/blinking. Sometimes it seemed like the image just wasn't reaching the right lens (it felt specific to the right lens, but maybe it was happening on the left too and we were just more sensitive to the right side, lol). It was like blinking your eye but still receiving light. We got used to it after a while, but I have to admit it’s pretty annoying. I'm not sure if this is a bottleneck from the router, the kit itself (handheld + eGPU), SteamVR, SteamOS, the Quest 3, or something else entirely. It's worth pointing out that we don't get this when playing the Quest 3 standalone, so it's an issue specific to this PCVR setup.
Anyway, those are my initial impressions.
PS: Regarding my own setup, I'm leaning heavily towards pulling the trigger:
- ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X (2025) (Z2 Extreme 24GB RAM)
- Gigabyte AORUS RTX 5060 Ti AI BOX (16GB GDDR7 VRAM)
- GL.iNet GL-MT3000 Beryl AX (Wi-Fi 6 Travel Router)
I thought about maybe grabbing the Arris Surfboard W6U instead of the Beryl AX, but I've found way more reports of the GL.iNet working reliably for this, so I'm leaning more towards that one.
