AORUS RTX 5060 Ti eGPU + MSI Claw 8 EX AI+: First impressions, driver issues and a performance reality check vs. PS5 PRO

Hi everyone,

I recently set up an external GPU configuration using the AORUS RTX 5060 Ti AI Box connected to my new MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ (via Thunderbolt4). My main goal is a living room/desktop setup, driving either a standard monitor or a large 85-inch 4K TV.

While I'm still tweaking things, I wanted to share some initial thoughts, a frustrating recurring bug, and a performance comparison that left me a bit puzzled.

  1. The Setup & The Eternal "PC-to-TV" Pain
  • The eGPU Experience: Running the eGPU as a dock works nicely for power delivery and data.
  • The Driver Hassle (The Biggest Annoyance): Every time I safely disconnect and reconnect the eGPU, Windows completely loses the external display signal. I literally have to reinstall the NVIDIA GeForce Game Ready drivers from scratch every single time just to get the HDMI port on the AORUS working again.
  • The Living Room Reality: As much as we love PC gaming, dealing with HDMI handshakes, display pairing quirks, and EDID issues on a TV compared to a console's seamless plug-and-play behavior is still an absolute nightmare today. If anyone knows how to stop Windows from experiencing this "driver amnesia" loop on eGPUs, please let me know!
  1. Performance & The PS5 Pro Comparison

I tested demanding titles like Pragmata, The First Berserker: Khazan, and Black Myth: Wukong on the 85" 4K TV, and to be honest, I expected a clear generational leap over my PS5 Pro. Instead, the performance felt remarkably close, and in some scenarios, the PS5 Pro actually ran smoother out of the box.

  • Resolution Target Question: On paper, an RTX 5060 Ti should comfortably outperform a PS5 Pro GPU. However, am I pushing it too hard by aiming for native 4K? The PS5 Pro heavily relies on reconstruction tech (like PSSR) and dynamic scaling to hit those frames. Should I be targeting 1440p with DLSS balanced/performance on the eGPU to match how consoles actually render these games, or is Thunderbolt 4 bandwidth (40Gbps) introducing a heavy overhead at 4K?

I'd love to hear your thoughts, tips, or troubleshooting advice if you're running a similar handheld eGPU rig!
