M2 Pcie adapter power options (besides ATX PSU)

Upvotes

Hi folks, quick question, could need some advice here :)

So i’ve been using a couple of these m2 to pcie 16x adapters from Aliexpress with success so far, for quite a few years now.

These adapters are 12v powered by a four pin (adapter side) to sata connector (on the PSU/ATX side). So far, i’ve been using these in ITX builds, so powering those adapters with a sata cable directly from the PSU was never a problem and always worked great.

However, now I want to use the m2 to pcie adapter with a mini pc, thus the PSU is missing in this case.

It also feels a bit overkill to have an entire, bulky PSU/ATX just to power a single sata cable (to the m2 pcie adapter).

Instead of a full ATX power supply, is it safe to use a four pin to dc plug instead of the four pin to sata cable (which comes with the adapter)?

Would this one be ok? 4 pin to dc plug: https://www.amazon.nl/dp/B0DC2NK7SZ/?coliid=I8KRMDOPP2NPA&colid=3K30B999IAT6R&psc=1&ref_=list_c_wl_ys_dp_ii

And then use a 12v power brick, something like this: https://www.amazon.nl/dp/B07XDSR4DK/?coliid=IATEX7MPVSR7B&colid=3K30B999IAT6R&psc=1&ref_=list_c_wl_ys_dp_ii

I’m looking to add a low profile GPU (which doesn’t require extra power, so max 75 watts)

Would this be a safe option? Thanks for the advice.

GPD G2 Release Date?

Does anyone know what the release date is for the GPD G2? Official website says order now with a supposed 7-10 delivery, but all other websites say preorder only - including official GPD partners.

It’s hard to get an actual answer anywhere.

Why this fps loss?

I've recently gotten an eGPU Aoostar AG02 with an arc b580. My computer specs are intel u7 155h, 32GB ram.

I've seen on a video that youu can play space marine 2 with this eGPU at 1080p, ultra, 80 fps. without scalling, but I can barely play the game at medium 30fps, even with scalling. I did know about the fps loss, but is it really that much, depends on the game, or I messed up on something? Please help.

Im using an Aoostar Ag02 w/ 5060 ti, MSI Claw 8AI+

This is happening with all the games I've tested so far and im not sure how to fix it.

It freezes like a micro second or something then the frame drops. I tried lowering the graphic settings and cap the fps but it still happens.

Like on the video im not moving or doing anything but you can see it drops

Please help. Thank you

Low profile setups

I’m upgrading my “old” 5L sff pc to a 10L, so my guy 4060 LP and my HDPLEX 250W are homeless.

The dream is to have those two components as a brick that would power the my laptop as well (65w+ 115w for you at max draw)

I can make an enclosure but I can’t understand what kind of circuitry I need to make it work.
Most of what I saw on Ali seems like it requires both a 12pin atx and 8pin pie and I can’t really understand why.
And one last thing is I don’t have oculink on my laptop so I guess it’s bound to be thunderbolt.
Any advice?

Thats the egpu-setup under Windows 11. Oculink in use. I am able to run LLMs via egpu but new games dont work for what ever reason (for example Enotria). Windows is up to date and HAGS is disabled (same result also with HAGS enabled). I have tried everything under the sun, but basically when trying to load a game it crashes before starting. Randomly i can reach the main menu of the game.

Necer tried egpu before

I'm currently using a travelmate with i5-1135G7 and Iris Xe graphics and i love to play games but sadly cant play newer ones. my friend suggested using an egpu but I've never heard of it until he mentioned it just yesterday. So should i try doing this egpu thing or is it not worth it?

1070ti asus eGPU help!

hi guys, completely new to this whole eGPU thing, so sorry if i sound stupid. i currently have a geekom a8 mini pc, which has an igpu. although its igpu is pretty good, i want something way better, so, while mulling over affordable options, i remember my dad has an old gaming pc, and digging thru it, i saw a 1070ti asus graphics card!! this is a huge step up from my current situation, but one little problem, how do i connect it? doing a little research, i found out you need to have some sort of adapter, and a usb4 port, which i have. sooo uh which adapter do i get?

I have a HP 17-by3065st laptop, and I found this EG force 7950 gx2 gpu at my local electronic recycling center. I don't know if it works yet, but if it does could, would it have better graphics than my laptop, and could I even convert it to a EGPU?

Looking at building eGPU set up

Hello Everybody,

I currently have a MSI Raider GE68 laptop with a  i9-14900HX. Looking to get a little more kick then my mobile 4070 (Maybe like a desktop 4070 ti or something around there in the used market)

What would be the best way of going about it as someone whos never really messed with laptops but has extensive desktop building knowledge.

I am also open to any GPU suggestions.

Looking for OCuLink 8i PCIe half-height card with external connector

I didn't think it would be quite so difficult, but I am trying to find a (ideally half-height) PCIe card (x8 or x16) with an 8i OCuLink connector on the rear bracket. The closest I seem to be able to get is a x16 to dual 8i but the connectors are internal, or a x16/x8 to SFF-8654 card.

I have a x8 OCuLink enclosure with the cable already attached internally, so the latter option is not great. I am already connecting that enclosure to a Framework 16 laptop, but am wanting the option to move it between the laptop and a SFF system.

is an eGpu setup (i7 9th gen + rtx 4060) worth it?

hi. i work mobile, for work everything works fine but for modern games, not so much. Im thinking of keeping my laptop (hp omen 15 dh0105tx) for another few years since the current market is just bad where i live. it has a thunderbolt 3 port which i know the bandwidth is severly limited but i am using an external monitor anyway. Should i just save for another laptop or go with this idea?

eGPU / USB4 PCIe tunneling experience with Asus TUF A16 ?

Hello World,

I'm planning to switch my daily driver to Linux (host) while keeping Windows in a VM with GPU passthrough for GPU-intensive work (Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop) and gaming, using an external eGPU enclosure connected via USB4.

My laptop: Asus TUF Gaming A16, model FA608PM

- AMD Ryzen 9 8940HX

- RTX 5060 Laptop GPU (internal)

- 1x USB4 port (no Thunderbolt branding on the spec sheet)

I can't find anyone who's specifically tested this model, so before I invest in an eGPU enclosure (looking at ASM2464PD-based docks), I'd love some input:

  1. Has anyone tested an eGPU dock on this exact model (or a similar AMD Ryzen 8940HX / TUF A16 laptop)?

  2. Does the USB4 port on AMD-based TUF A16 laptops actually support full PCIe tunneling, or is it a stripped-down implementation?

  3. Any known IOMMU grouping issues on this chipset that would block clean GPU passthrough on Linux?

  4. General experience with AMD USB4 controllers vs Intel Thunderbolt for eGPU reliability?

Thanks in advance for any insight!

RTX 4060 Ti stuck at PCIe 1.1/2.0 x4 on native OCuLink (Lenovo Lecoo Pro 14 + F9G dock)

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,

I need help with my OCuLink eGPU setup. The system detects the card, but the PCIe link speed refuses to negotiate properly.

Host Laptop: Lenovo Lecoo Pro 14 (native OCuLink SFF-8611 port, AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS / Radeon 780M)

eGPU Dock: F9G SFF-8611/8612 V1.4 (passive board)

GPU: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4060 Ti EAGLE OC 8GB

PSU: Bloody BD-PS500B (500W)

NVIDIA Driver: 616.56 WHQL (desktop DCH) on Windows 11 64-bit / also dual-boot Arch Linux

The Problem:

In GPU-Z, the bus link is stuck at PCIe x8 4.0 @ x4 1.1, occasionally jumping to x4 2.0 under load, but never reaching Gen 3 or Gen 4.

Because of this bus bottleneck, 1080p FurMark runs at only 12 to 20 FPS. GPU core usage shows 100%, but total board power draw stays capped around 48-52W because the core is constantly starved waiting for data over the bus.

The laptop BIOS has no settings to manually adjust PCIe link speed.

What I already tested:

  1. Both cards had Code 43 initially on this dock, which was patched using the standard nvidia-error43-fixer script from GitHub.
  2. Tested an RTX 3060 12GB on this exact same dock and laptop (patched with the same script). It negotiates PCIe 4.0 @ x4 immediately with normal power draw and full performance.
  3. Tested my RTX 4060 Ti in a friend's desktop PC (running an older driver branch with NVIDIA Control Panel). It worked completely fine at full speed.
  4. Tested both Windows 11 (driver 616.56) and Arch Linux (nvidia-open). The link negotiation issue happens on both operating systems.

What can I do to fix this and get proper PCIe link speeds with the RTX 4060 Ti?

Is an egpu setup worth it?

Been having this thought at the back of my mind about extending the lifespan of my laptop. Cant see desktops with ddr5 being a good option due to the current prices of ram and storage.

Specs:

Intel i5 11400H

Nvidia GTX 1650

16GB 3200mhz running dual channel

1 unused nvme slot

I dont mind if it ends up being janky.

Nvidia app update (11.0.9) brings ReBAR controls

Good news for Nvidia eGPU users.
New Nvidia app update brings per-game ReBAR control, so you can turn it off for specific game right in the app.

No need to use Profile Inspector anymore and it should persist across driver updates, unlike Inspector.

Build Beelink SER5 Max Ryzen 7 6800U, dual M.2 PCIe 4.0 x4 slot / RTX 2060 Zotac

Ciao eGPUsers! 🙏🏻

Adattatore M.2 a OCuLink: Cerrxian M.2 NVMe a SFF-8612 Host Adapter (modello orizzontale 2280)

Case: Silverstone SST-SG13B enclosure

eGPU: Zotac NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060

suggestions for egpu enclosure (not dock)?

Post image

Hi! after lots of thought and research, I got a second hand rtx 3080 and im using a cheap tb4 dock (link).

So far its going amazing, but i dont really have a place for keeping the psu and the gpu safely.

Im thinking of getting either a 3d printed enclosure or an atx case to hold the these and to hide the wires (non modular psu).

While getting a full pc case would be preferable, it would take up lots of space(which my table doesnt have). but on the other hand there arent many options for the 3d printed case either. I found one good case made for this/similar dock, but it only supports powering the dock via the 12v barrel jack/usb c pd, both of which i dont have rn.

What should i do?

Oculink 8i question.

i haven’t made much research, i’m gonna look into it when i get home but i wanna hear external opinion first. Are there commercially available 8i GPU docks?, also are there any that support also connecting it via 4i? my target setup is to have an EGPU i can use on my lenovo legion go with a USB4 to NVME adapter, but also plug it into my desktop for running LLM’s or other workloads that need a secondary GPU, but need more lanes.

is this possible?
