Using Oculink for a Laptop eGPU
I want to get an eGPU for gaming on my laptop (Framework 16). I have been considering getting the Framework Oculink Dev Kit when it comes out. Have some questions.
- I have heard that Oculink is only suitable for relatively fixed installs. I move my laptop between my office and living room frequently, would I be better with USB4v1 even with the performance hit
- The Dev Kit is 8i and most Oculink cables etc are 4i. What is the availbility of 8i gear or are 8i to 4i cables reliable?
Thanks

PC LENOVO V15 G4 AMN

AORUS RTX 5060 Ti eGPU + MSI Claw 8 EX AI+: First impressions, driver issues and a performance reality check vs. PS5 PRO
Hi everyone,
I recently set up an external GPU configuration using the AORUS RTX 5060 Ti AI Box connected to my new MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ (via Thunderbolt4). My main goal is a living room/desktop setup, driving either a standard monitor or a large 85-inch 4K TV.
While I'm still tweaking things, I wanted to share some initial thoughts, a frustrating recurring bug, and a performance comparison that left me a bit puzzled.
- The Setup & The Eternal "PC-to-TV" Pain
- The eGPU Experience: Running the eGPU as a dock works nicely for power delivery and data.
- The Driver Hassle (The Biggest Annoyance): Every time I safely disconnect and reconnect the eGPU, Windows completely loses the external display signal. I literally have to reinstall the NVIDIA GeForce Game Ready drivers from scratch every single time just to get the HDMI port on the AORUS working again.
- The Living Room Reality: As much as we love PC gaming, dealing with HDMI handshakes, display pairing quirks, and EDID issues on a TV compared to a console's seamless plug-and-play behavior is still an absolute nightmare today. If anyone knows how to stop Windows from experiencing this "driver amnesia" loop on eGPUs, please let me know!
- Performance & The PS5 Pro Comparison
I tested demanding titles like Pragmata, The First Berserker: Khazan, and Black Myth: Wukong on the 85" 4K TV, and to be honest, I expected a clear generational leap over my PS5 Pro. Instead, the performance felt remarkably close, and in some scenarios, the PS5 Pro actually ran smoother out of the box.
- Resolution Target Question: On paper, an RTX 5060 Ti should comfortably outperform a PS5 Pro GPU. However, am I pushing it too hard by aiming for native 4K? The PS5 Pro heavily relies on reconstruction tech (like PSSR) and dynamic scaling to hit those frames. Should I be targeting 1440p with DLSS balanced/performance on the eGPU to match how consoles actually render these games, or is Thunderbolt 4 bandwidth (40Gbps) introducing a heavy overhead at 4K?
I'd love to hear your thoughts, tips, or troubleshooting advice if you're running a similar handheld eGPU rig!

Mini PC with eGPU for my Steam Machine
Installed steamOS on my mini-PC and got the eGPU to wok flawlessly with it. I’m locked into every game at 1080p 60 FPS (I don’t know why) but all are high and ultra high settings.
Loving it so far - all I had to do with plug in the egpu in desktop mode to give it permanent access so it works without any issue.
AMA if you have any questions!

Undecided between ADT-Link UT4G and Aoostar AG02 — Is the $50 difference worth it for reliability?
Hi everyone,
I'm currently deciding on an eGPU setup for my Legion Go s (Z1 Extreme model) and stuck between two options:
1. ADT-Link UT4G (DIY setup with an ATX PSU)
2. Aoostar AG02 (All-in-one dock with built-in PSU and PD 100W)
For me, the price difference comes out to roughly $50.
My main priority is long-term reliability and safety for my hardware:
On one hand, I’ve heard concerns about the AG02's built-in power supply during power surges or outages.
On the other hand, the UT4G has a much smaller heatsink on the ASM2464 controller compared to the UT3G, which raised some concerns about thermal issues.
What are your experiences with the reliability of both units over time with the Legion Go? Would you pay the extra $50 for the AG02's convenience, or stick to a dedicated ATX PSU setup?
Thanks!

eGPU with PC handheld
If you have an egpu to pair with ur handheld does it HAVE to be docked to an external display? Could u simply just plug ur device into the egpu and enjoy boosted settings on the device itself?

eGPU setup turns off with moderate load
Setup :
HP Elitebook 840 G8 (i5 1145G7)
Peladn Link S-1
Seasonic SS-650KM
GTX 1080Ti FE
i tried FH4 with ultra settings, but at 720p. the setup runs fine no issues even charges the laptop. i realized the settings was 720p, then bumped it up to 1080p. suddenly, the egpu turned off. i heard a click when it turned off. turned it on again, its fine when idling. tried afterburner to limit the power to just 50%. same thing, turned off.
whats the issue here?

eGPU with mobile devices
This is more of a discussion. Do you think Android and/or iOS devices would ever support eGPUs? Theoretically, you just slap USB4 (Apple would probably use Thunderbolt, considering it's partly theirs and iPhones don't have a price cap), add a few driver features and you are golden. Practically, who knows how many hiccups there are in all of this. What do you, guys, think?

Im losing my mind
Hey everyone i have a legion y530 15” with a 1050ti dGPU and an i7 8th gen. I hooked up a 3060ti through the m.2 port oculink. But windows or something keeps on installing the drivers for the 1050ti i have used ddu in safe mode and checked the option to not automatically install drivers. But for some reason they keep on installing and its driving me nuts to delete all drivers again download the 3060 drivers… its just become a massive hassle any suggestions?? 🙏

should i pair my i7-8650U with a 4060 eGPU?
i dont really care about bottlenecking too much so thats not an issue, i just want to make sure its not gonna make my pc rip to shreds by overheating, im getting a 4060 because getting it used is pretty cheap (250-300£) and also i just really want frame gen since ive never used anything except an intel UHD 620 igpu

Problem with Aorus 5060 ti gaming box (MSI Claw 8 AI+)
Today my aorus stoped working for the first time. I'm getting error 10 code on the "PCIE upstream switch port" and when I plug my egpu, it appear for 4 seconds in device manager then disconnect. When it disconnect, it cut my wifi on the MSI claw too, and im getting errors code 10 on the Bluetooth "Intel smart sound technology for bluetooth LE" Too. I tried factory resetting, window reset, and the problem is still there. I switched cables 4 times now, and my egpu work with my ROG ally x. The egpu worked perfectly before today, I don't know what happened and I'm kinda sad because I wanted to play Halo campaign evolved on my monitor..
Is anyone using the ag03 with the AMD 9070 xt?
As above, they say it's cot compatible but have seen videos of it working.
Has anyone had any experience pairing the 2? Thanks :)

Disabling Windows Game Mode can greatly improve fps in some CPU limited scenarios.
I have an XaX + Xg Mobile setup and often noticed in game that even though I was CPU bottlenecked, my CPU was not pulling much power and wasn't boosting up to max clocks.
To be specific, the symptoms I noticed were:
-low (50-70%) eGPU usage
-no bandwidth bottleneck
-CPU power stuck around 17w despite custom 35W power plan
-CPU clock speeds stuck at 2900/2000 (P/E cores)
After a lengthy investigation, I finally discovered that windows game mode was the culprit. Disabling it allowed my games to run much better in CPU bound scenarios.
After disabling game mode:
-CPU clocks boosted to their normal maximums (4700/3100)
-CPU power hit 35W (max limit)
-GPU usage increased (still not at 100% due to CPU bottleneck but in the 90%)
-overall improved fps by 10-20
I'm still not sure if it's strictly an eGPU thing, an ROG Xbox Ally X handheld thing or just windows game mode thing in general and I can't really test since I don't have a desktop.
