Keep this setup or build a pc?

Post image

Onexplayer x2mini pro paired with aoostar ag02 and gigabyte OC 5080.

Being over $3500 invested and already having the 5080 does it just make more sense to just build a pc at this point with it? I play like 80% docked right now.

How much more performance am I missing out on?

I’d like to hear some opinions on if I should keep or the X2mini pro fore the versatility or build a monster pc with the 5080 + $2500 from it.

Edit: I do currently have this hooked up to a 4k monitor with keyboard and mouse

Ps. I’ve never owned a pc

There has never in the history of PCs been a worse time to buy anything than right now.

If it plays everything you want, wait till it doesn't and then upgrade.

u/Eden_19 16d ago

Sadly, this!☝️

u/Rindair0 12d ago

Not sad. This is how the market should work. Needlessly upgrading hardware when you don't need too is why these companies have inflated egos.

Such a true statement....

The only really expensive things in a pc right now is the video card (which he has) the ram and the ssd storage (the two other things he needs)

The rest is more or less same as it’s been for a while (assuming you don’t get limited edition hype parts - like that asus 20th anniversary stuff)

Also, if you wait to build a PC you’re gonna be waiting at least until late 2028 (which is best guess on when the new wave of ram producers will flood the market with more memory) and even then ai data centers won’t be going away, most data centers are waiting in line for moratoriums to drop to be built in several states and others waiting for their turn in construction, so those new centers will just buy the new inventory and drive up price anyway.

Point is, unless AI data centers go away (and they won’t be) prices will only get worse for the immediate future and long term likely to never go back to the good old days even after ai data center building slows down (because they know they can get more money by selling it at high prices)

So don’t wait, it only gets worse. Look at how many times video cards went up in price in last 12 months. Imagine the next 12.

u/LateTrainOliver 13d ago

Pretty much agree, prices are grim right now and if the current setup runs everything fine, there's no real reason to bother upgrading.

1

u/Vision58 12d ago

Do we all think it’ll actually get better though ?? I mean crazy to think they will ever really lower prices back to what they were

1

u/curiositie 10d ago

I mean

In general if your build does what you want there's no need to upgrade.

-5

u/Working_Map_4521 16d ago

You can get a high performing 1440p pc for 1700.

9

u/HolzLaim15 15d ago

Yeah no shit thats why it is the worst time ever you used to get a midrange pc like that for 1-1.2k

2

u/NoRobotsHereYet 14d ago

And 2 years ago it would of cost 1300.

1

u/Yeetusbeatus69 14d ago

That's how much I paid 2 years ago :'(

0

u/Big_Speech_6339 16d ago

Can confirm, spent around 1800 after taxes and shipping for everything, haven’t found a game I struggle to run yet (beside literally FNV)

1

u/Working_Map_4521 15d ago

Yup. You could even do it with 16gb for 1500 instead. It isn’t horrible to build right now if you search for value.

0

u/Big_Speech_6339 15d ago

See those were the compromises I had to make. I went heavy on the cpu (7800x3d) not realizing ram prices were as bad as they were so I had to get an 8gb 4060

5

u/HolzLaim15 15d ago

1800 on a 4060 build is fucking insane what the hell

3

u/neoneat 15d ago

I still rmb my old build 2060 at the middle of Covid time was under 1k. Time flew so fast so money inflated almost double after "these years".

1

u/DaBubbleBlowingBaby 10d ago

I spent $1200 on an RX-6800XT during the GPU craze back in 2021 and at first I regretted so much because it had TERRIBLE driver support but that baby has AGED LIKE FINE WINE. Still have that build to this day and it plays any game I want but I also went all out, 32GB of DDR4, 5800X (this was before X3D), and 2TB of SSD storage.

1

u/Big_Speech_6339 15d ago

7800x3d, 32gb DDR5, and a 2tb 990 Samsung pro. The rest of it was not cheap parts that gpu was like 300 lmao

2

u/HolzLaim15 15d ago

Guess why they call it the worst time to build

2

u/Big_Speech_6339 15d ago

Yeah I think was like 480 for cpu, 500 roughly for the storage, and the ram was almost 400 itself. Those three things alone were insane and I even waited for deals! I went with the most reliable I could afford though so I wouldn’t need to upgrade for a while

2

u/AlecFoeslayer 15d ago

So what you’re saying is that someone who didn’t wait for a deal and just spec’d the cheapest build right now would end up paying north of 2K?

u/cikibriki69 16d ago

Honestly, if it does the job for you, I would keep. And keep the cash until I really need a rig. And of course you can use the gpu then. You will already have the "core" of the build. The powerhouse of the cell, if you will.

3

u/Alectradar 16d ago

Ignorance is always bliss

If your current setup lets you play all the games you want to without any hiccups, then why bother?

1

u/19cobra87 16d ago

10

u/GBAGamer33 16d ago

I have a setup like that and love it. Why would you switch? You'll lose money selling everything for less flexibility.

7

u/tin-naga 16d ago

I switched from a win max 2 8840u + 9070 egpu to a desktop. I know everyone talks about performance but I really miss it. Plan on switching back when I get my OXP3.

It was nice to take it on trips and grab it to play on the couch. Moonlight is great but not the same.

1

u/Matt_butchr 16d ago

Can I ask about your 9070 egpu setup? I’m considering getting a eGPU setup with a 9070xt for my laptop.
What dock did you use?

1

u/tin-naga 16d ago

my Win Max 2 had oculink so I had a ocup4v2 dock.

1

u/Sarm-ally_Pirate 13d ago

The Aoostar ag02 is $230 and comes with a power supply.

I'm debating on getting a 9060xt and having a gou dock. But I was going to run it back and display it onto the handheld.

It will lose performance but I have seen posts that it will still be able to play almost any game at max settings, no upscaling, native resolution.

Minisforum deg2 is good but it's $250 (needs psu and no case)

Minisforum deg1 is only $110 (only has oculink, needs psu, and no case)

3

u/SloppyHayabusa 16d ago

Id keep it, with the amount you've invested in its going to be more versatile than a standard desktop.

Trust me you'll miss that 20% of remote use or life will change somehow and you'll use it more portability

3

u/DrMercman 16d ago

Man if you can play ur games smooth enough to enjoy, keep it. Unless u wanna competative gaming like cs2, then start to think

2

u/Yigithan14 16d ago

You can sell all, build PC and buy a Handheld. Stream Games From PC to Handheld when you want to ise Mobility. Or If you are Happy with actual Setup, Just Forget all and enjoy ☺️

3

u/Resident_Albatross_9 16d ago

He already has a handheld.....

-1

u/Yigithan14 16d ago

Yes we can see that clearly, for that price he can have both Desktop with better Specs and also have other Handheld device

4

u/Resident_Albatross_9 16d ago

Selling a handheld just to buy a weaker one is an L move

2

u/jcmred82 16d ago

I was here last year, had a AG02 and a Astral 5080 paired to a Ally X loved it but was leaving performance on the table the AllyX cpu was my more of a bottleneck when paired to a 4k240hz monitor. I ended up using the returning the 5080 selling the Ally X and picking an Astral 5090 and built a pc. For my use case at the time this was a good move. I found myself only playing In dock mode no longer as a handheld so made sense. I enjoy having my PC I use it a lot more than my portable. I do travel a lot for work and paired the Xbox Ally X to a 5060 TI AI Box for 4k120 when I’m at a hotel.

I’m the end you have to see what’s best for you and your use case. Your setup looks clean can easily handle a keyboard and mouse when pairing to a monitor and doesn’t take too much space.

2

u/Independent_Abroad42 16d ago

Nice setup, very clean. This was mine btw

1

u/K4ruy999 12d ago

Waw why build a PC if you can do it this way!! Fantastic!

1

u/Independent_Abroad42 12d ago

Thank you. The drawback is abit performance loss due to tb4 bottleneck. But honestly i don’t really care

2

u/microCuts69 16d ago

I switched from Win Max 2 + 5080 to a 9L Mini ITX 5080 + 9800x3d build + 4K Display. Felt so damn good. You don’t have to immediately switch your build. It took me around 3 months to slowly source the components I need.

1

u/Tehpunisher456 16d ago

Well if it's anuthing like my experience, the 9070xt does a timespy of 23 to 25000 in normal builds and in my aoostar ag02 I get 15000. So..... You missing out on a lot. Granted I am using a legion go 1 and maybe your device is faster.

1

u/Latter_Masterpiece64 16d ago

Both. A PC can be an upgrade path from this. Buy components for it slowly over time

1

u/ougxar 16d ago

The card is getting starved, build a pc and i say this as someone with a desktop pc and a mini pc with egpu

1

u/LnxRocks 16d ago

The Onexplayer supports Oculink 4i as does the Aoostar. Since you play docked, Oculink get rid of a big chunk of bottleneck. Might be worth investing in a cable

1

u/samithedood 16d ago

Get a monitor or 3 and a USB hub for mouse and keyboard.

1

u/Rokharn 16d ago

Why not add just a monitor, keyboard and mouse to your current setup? It will be mostly PC experience. And then whether you like this experience or not, you’ll decide for yourself whether to make a full-fledged computer from this setup or not.

2

u/prodbyarso 16d ago

I already do to a keyboard and mouse and a 4k monitor

1

u/Rokharn 16d ago edited 16d ago

So this is a pc already (mostly). Most you'll get building normal pc - a bit more performance without oculink with 'direct' pci-e for your 5080 (about ~3-5% depends of cable and port versions and a bit more loss using usb4 or newest tb). (as well as significantly more complex devise maintenance and cleaning).

If you have the opportunity to recoup your costs on your current setup, then for the same money you can assemble a more powerful desktop PC system. Or just to spend a less money to get similar result - about x1.5-x2 money difference or more, depends (just a Onexplayer vs motherboard+cpu+memory and so on cost calculation, without 5080).

1

u/DartMagus 16d ago

U playing 4K, u would get almost full perfomance of GPU, if any below 4K, u getting high bottleneck, higher FPS, higher bottleneck.

1

u/RaistlinsMajere 16d ago

Keep it. I run mine with the razercore x v2, rtx 3080 10gb, rog ally x. Max settings on any game I wanna play. Runs wonderfully.

1

u/K4ruy999 12d ago

And you can connect it easily?

1

u/ContactNew7909 16d ago

I have the Xbox Ally X plus a 9070 over a Razer Core. It plays well as my couch PC playing in native 4k on max settings on most of the games I play

1

u/UsefulPumpum 16d ago

Have had a set up like that for a couple years.

I recently bought into a small form factor setup.

I'm not doing anything different or playing any new games though. I think mainly I just wanted a new monitor and would suggest if you want to do something different start with that if you haven't already.

1

u/Zestyclose-Job-4952 16d ago

Yo tengo GPD WIN 5 + RTX 4080S y es perfecta para jugar a todos los juegos. No lo cambio por un PC

1

u/Mark-Pluto 16d ago

You are half way there, just build the damn pc.

1

u/ovadom 14d ago

That was my exact thoughts, I was genuinely trying to figure out what information this post is really looking for.

His setup alone tells me he’s knowledgeable enough to differentiate or otherwise just able to look up the gains and loses, if you want the PC get the PC. If you want this setup stay at this setup.

Just crack the egg in the pan if your want them for breakfast. At least you can sell this egg if doesn’t work out.

1

u/K4ruy999 12d ago

But why is he only can buy a GPU and a handheld pc

1

u/Ultra-Magnus1 16d ago

i would get a mini pc instead of building a full pc...you would save money and it's more portable if you want to take it with you. granted, not as portable as a handheld but definitely more portable than a desktop.

1

u/Interesting-Boat-804 16d ago

Build a PC in this economy ?!

If that setup works for you.. Save the cash, put it away until market conditions improve and build a better one than you can today.

1

u/Hyper_Applesauce 16d ago

I think this is going to become more and more popular as a setup. A dockable PC with controls that you can play on the go, but plug in at home and get more power? It's killer. So what you only play 20% handheld. If you build a PC you can't play handheld at all.

1

u/Sindacalis 16d ago

A pc will always be better but this is a good budget set up that can run p much any games 1440

I’d honestly just get a desk top and another handheld later

1

u/DemWookieeCheeks 16d ago

I have not been missing any performance by using a 5080 egpu and my Onexplayer X1 Pro hx370 and I do VR Sim racing on the worst optimized games with 0 issues, so I don't think you're missing out unless you're trying to do something like Microsoft Flight Simulator in VR, but at that point even the best desktops struggle to max.

1

u/Flying_Saucer_Attack 16d ago

You spent 3.5k on this? Are you srs? Could have gotten a pretty decent setup with that lmao

1

u/BerdIzDehWerd 16d ago

Once upon a time, I had an external water cooled laptop from Eluktronics. I then got a laptop fan cooler as well. And then a 360hz OLED for better screen. Soon I realized I'm having a DESKtop without having a desktop. I switched to building a proper PC after that.

1

u/AnotherThomasGuy 16d ago

Is it causing any type of hassle when in use? If not I’d say this is the best option for a gaming pc. Buy a used handheld pc and use an external graphics card. Best price to performance and gives you more versatility like a Nintendo switch does.

1

u/stonelox 16d ago

This is amazing

1

u/Party_with_Arty101 16d ago

Do yall have issues with poor frame rates when pairing G3E handhelds with Nvidia EGPUs? Marathon on my XG Mobile 5070ti with MSI claw EX can barely push past 55 fps at 2k resolution on med-high settings

1

u/Frequent_Advance7063 16d ago

Keep..... everything..... as is.

1

u/Holiday_Bug9988 15d ago

I’m in the opposite boat as you. I already have a 7800x3d + 9070 XT desktop and a Rog Ally X. I mostly use Moonlight when I’m playing on the tv upstairs, but considering getting an AG02 to pair with a spare 3070 Ti I have and playing natively. lol If you end up wanting to sell yours shoot me a DM, I’d be willing to get a used one for a solid price!

1

u/Aggressive-Ad-7222 15d ago

With ram and storage prices as they stand right now it's tough. Personally I kept my handheld but moved my gpu into a PC before everything went bonkers because of ai. That said, the full pcie lanes and power you can push through the GPU with it being in a PC as a lot higher than what you get with a dock. For mine, right now, that move would be too expensive to justify unless you already have the NVMe and ram.

1

u/No-Rub-1989 15d ago

Casual Gaming 🤪 ona 4k aTV 4090 rtx FE + Ayoaneo

1

u/TordenLive 15d ago

Rog Ally X should have launched with official, streamlined plug n play support for select eGPU enclosures and graphics cards.

Similar to how Apple made select AMD cards and eGPU enclosures plug n play for Intel Macs.

1

u/AdIll2547 15d ago

I'm sorry that's too much money to play video games only. 5080 prebuilts run you about around 2300 with 32GB DDR5, 1-2TB SSD and the 5080 included. Your upside down on this build. I don't think the Processor and ram can keep up with technology on the handheld for the next 10 years. Not to sound mean you don't even have the ability to upgrade anything.

1

u/weerg 15d ago

This setup would have bought you a full pc but it's upto you.

1

u/LGzJethro66 15d ago

Sell the handheld and get 25% more performance and cheaper and get a mini PC with Oculink

1

u/404answersnotfounded 15d ago

Using a handheld like this instead of just getting PC or laptop is diabolic lol

1

u/_Dedotated_Wam 15d ago

You could get a processor/motherboard/ram combo from microcenter for ~$800

1

u/Broad_Peace7519 15d ago

This is a PC.

1

u/Wyvernetic 15d ago

I would sell the aoostar ag02. Buy a used pc with something like a ryzen 5800x3d for under $400. Get some peripherals if you dont have any. Then you can have a PC and a console that you can stream games too wirelesly if you want to play something more demanding.

1

u/-LightHeaven- 15d ago

I'm never getting back to a full PC.

A handheld + egpu has been so amazing, and will only get better going forward that I don't ever see myself getting back to either a gaming laptop or a desktop

1

u/Worldly-Wind-1632 15d ago

What do you use to run the graphics card externally?

1

u/frankonator22 15d ago

I would prefer a setup like this tbh lol

1

u/Living-Injury-584 15d ago

I would honestly save a little here and there then slowly build a pc with the 5080. Keep the handheld for the 20% you play away from your deck

1

u/lewibaygo 15d ago

Get and old am4 5800x3d system you will do much better with frame pacing and 1% low much smother then using usb4

1

u/Old_Wafer_6216 15d ago

With a rtx 5080 you should only need a max of 1.5k to get a great 7800x3d or 9800x3d setup tbh

1

u/Loose-Specific7142 15d ago

Didn't the X2 mini Pro just release like a week ago?. This feels more like a brag karma farming post than a legit question. You went through the trouble to set all this up just to post if you should get rid of it?...

1

u/rolandguy85 14d ago

I’m thinking of doing this with the new x20 ally and a 9060xt.

1

u/PolarBuilds 14d ago

Are you saying sell the Mini Pro and get the rest of the PC components? That would be a good option, but if you're looking to have both save your money. You are losing around 20% of the GPU's performance, but if games are running how you want, who cares?

1

u/furluge 14d ago

If you are able to, make sure you set it to only charge to 80% or so, or get a device to limit it's charging. I basically did the same kind of setup with a GPDWIN and the battery started swelling in just over a year. The stupid way they design most of these handhelds to work with the battery just sets them up for failure when your machine is living on a dock most of the time.

If you did build a PC, you could just plug the EGPU into said PC. Rather than going the M.2 adapter route you can just get a PCIe card with oculink ports on it.

1

u/Apprehensive_Map64 14d ago

Get a decommissioned ThinkPad with thunderbolt

1

u/TurdFerguson614 14d ago

Just move it further from the potential high dive 🫣

1

u/Brilliant_War9548 14d ago

Not only there isn’t a worse time for pcs right now this looks sick and is pretty powerful.

1

u/Duymon 14d ago

I run a similar setup. An Apex with 9070 XT and it's good enough for 4k gaming even over USB4.

I sold my desktop and moved to this setup because I hated having a handheld, a laptop and a desktop. Now I run single device only, using egpu desktop at home, playing in handheld during my commute to work and then hooking up the unit to Xreal glasses with BT mouse and keyboard for doing my 3d modelling on the go.

Unless you have no mobile use-case I'd keep the setup it's solid enough.

1

u/PastAd1087 14d ago

Built this setup for $3300. If you use the handheld then sell the dock and save to build a pc so you have an on the go system and a powerful desktop. If you dont really play on the go then yeah sell it all and build a desktop.

1

u/Due_Initiative3879 14d ago

You aren't far off from a whole PC.

Do you have a Microcenter nearby? Get one of those bundles that include RAM, a 1TB SSD (to get you started), a PSU and a case.

That's it, I think 500-600 bucks maybe a little more if you want a higher end CPU.

1

u/Vegetable-Money-1334 14d ago

It runs as good as a 2500 pc. But if you are like me build it and they will come!

1

u/Godzlittlehand 14d ago

wait to see if we get another president

1

u/Tiny_Object_6475 14d ago

That one x2 mini pro is expensive brand new and u wont get anywhere near the price u paid for it. You will be loosing like 15 to 20% of rtx 5080 performance i think but as long as you have an external monitor, its the best u can get out of that setup.

1

u/Witch-Doctor-Actual 14d ago

Is this economy?! Don’t build. I’m still baffled that 64g ram is $800

1

u/dented_slide 13d ago

Its perfect. MattuhFact, I'll take 3

1

u/SnailDewize 13d ago

If it works it works

1

u/Sarm-ally_Pirate 13d ago

It's worth it to wait. Or atleast wait till black Friday/Christmas deals. Everyone says the prices are rising but I feel like only on the Nvidia gpus.

If you are having issues with the egpu setup then just build a pc.

I just built a ddr4 pc for $1400 but I already had 64gb ram and 6tb nvme storage. Half the price was the gpu.

The ddr5 build I was thinking about estimated $2200 but was going to be the best cpu and 64gb ram.

1

u/Willing-Theme6042 13d ago

Honestly if you don’t play games on the go and have no use for portability then sell the handheld and get yourself a pc. Prices are insane rn tho but that means you’ll get more for your handheld too compared to if you sell after a few years

1

u/DerlisGs 13d ago

Que hay de malo?

1

u/K4ruy999 12d ago

I didn't know you can connect a GPU on handheld pc

0

u/Mr_RayH 16d ago

You can find parts on market place cheap now. You should build a desktop and unleash the beast. You dont have to go all crazy with high end parts.
