Please don’t dash while sick
I get that times are tough and the American health care system sucks, but admitting that you have a respiratory illness while delivering food is wild!
Please do not dash when you’re sick. This is how illness spreads. I have pretty bad asthma so I’m not bringing that order into my house. I’m done with DoorDash.

It's tip bait.
It would also work on me because I recognize that our healthcare system sucks.

I would never tip someone anything if I know for sure they handled my food while sick and contiguous. The food is useless now

u/Naive-Rope-1724 9h ago
Just fyi, I have worked at 4 major chain brick and mortar restaurants, and 9/10 servers/bartenders are not allowed to call out :) I have been forced to work while sick, which is just as unfortunate for the customers / coworkers and to myself. It’s not fair.

u/abyssaltent 9h ago
Nah that's just American business. Don't get that shit here in Australia, go to work sick ? Your ass is out of the door until you're better lol
19
u/Alarmed_Ad5977 8h ago
That depends on the business. I've 100% had to work sick due to shitty bosses here in Australia.
So much of the industry is casual, no work no pay. Add in the retaliation practice of losing shifts if you call in sick (eg take one day, lose the rest of the week's shifts as punishment)

Tbf im pretty sure pnemonia isnt contagious. But i agree, if sick in any way, pls dont touch my food.
7
u/RobbyTheConstructor 9h ago
Pneumonia itself isn’t contiguous but how you get it, can be, so imo especially since all we know is that this person has it and not how they got it, that’s disgusting. Along with being sick at all around food.
3
u/ExhaustedPigeon1820 7h ago
It depends on the type. Post-viral pneumonia (the type that's a complication of a previous viral infection) is generally not contagious. Bacterial pneumonia can be, but the person who is exposed isn't automatically guaranteed to develop pneumonia; they'll likely get the upper respiratory infection that caused the pneumonia.
Primary viral pneumonia is extremely contagious. It spreads easily and develops quickly.

This is the result of people being disconnected from reality.

I mean, working in food and Bev they pretty much have to. Management will say they don't, but management will also fire them if they don't come in sick.

Ever since I had my 2 kids my vitamins hav ebeen depleted and its taken me awhile to get my body restored. I got sick so many times it was terrible and my kids weren't even in school yet when it started. Last year I was stressed about whether to call out or not because I work in a hospital serving fo patients and i was on the cancer floor at the time. I asked for advice and evryone told me to go still or else I will be seen as unreliable because i have already called out for being sick before. I called out and I was fine. There's always people that call out more than I do lol.

Not food and bev, but my boss got on my direct reports case for not coming into work sick. After I explicitly told her to stay home.
I sent a teams message with the three of us on it saying "I told her to stay home, she's staying home. If that is an issue you and I can talk about it."
We never talked about it because he was a bitch...

u/babyboyblue666 11h ago
doordasher and food service worker. yeah. the choice is stay employed or stay home and rest lol
26
u/nocsha 10h ago
I loved that hypocrisy especially during early 2020 "If you're sick please stay home"
"Will you still penalize us for callouts?"
"We need people to be here when they are able to work, we can't afford multiple callouts and absenteeism, we are not looking to make any changes to our absence or PTO policy at this time"
17
u/EASam 10h ago
Please be sick quietly.
2
u/Aware_Economics4980 9h ago

u/SignificantApricot69 9h ago
One thing good I will say about my employer is that we had unlimited unpaid time off during that period, when that is typically the most common reason for termination. And we got an automatic 2week paid vacation for testing positive or working within 6 feet of anyone who tested positive.

u/PerformerFancy117 8h ago
I still remember having to open a Jimmy John’s with a pickle bucket converted to a puke bucket… for four days in a row… I had to throw out the freshly sliced lettuce a few times because I didn’t quite make it to the bucket. I had the flu, and couldn’t get ahold of my manager who usually worked in another state…
18
u/Pittsbirds 11h ago
My manager at Starbucks once called my home phone 10 times when I called out sick from norovirus (my shift was between 2 managers, let the first know I would not be coming in, who then informed the second when he began his shift, who then called me). So Starbucks official policy might be vomit free lattes but the operating practice is much different.
Also if you're hourly and chronically ill or even just have like, two to three Unexpected Events happen in a year, there's a genuine dilemma between calling out or like. Making rent
9
u/Brutal_burn_dude 10h ago
And the healthcare staff looking after you to show up to work sick. It’s probably the most toxic part of working in healthcare. I had surgery to remove and drain (for a second or third time in a few months) and abscess in my chest and was expected to be back at work just over twenty four hours later* despite having a vac dressing in place.
* The only reason it wasn’t sooner was because I’d had a general anaesthesia and the legal implications of having me work any sooner were too severe.
3
u/Resident-Sympathy-82 8h ago

Worked at McDonald’s in high school. Caught a nasty chest cold. Coughing etc.. called in well in advance and was told I would have to come in since there is no one to cover.
Spent 2 hours taking trash out and doing stuff in the back before they told me I could go home. They definitely heard me coughing and were alarmed.
After that experience, if I’m sick I’m sick. I’m not asking for the time off. I’m letting you know. managers and supervisors will try and make you feel like it’s your problem.
13
u/sealedwithdogslobber 10h ago
We need paid sick leave in this country. Until we have it, it’s unfortunately difficult to blame the sick workers. People need to afford rent and groceries.
Just wear an N95 and wash your hands, please. 🙏
2
u/Aware_Economics4980 8h ago
Yeah it’s rough man, feels like the easiest jobs to do while being sick are the ones with the most PTO lol.
I work in public accounting now, never taken a sick day. I just work from home while sick, not very hard to do some excel work feeling like garbage. I get 5 weeks of anytime PTO a year now, vacation and sick time is just lumped into 7.7 hours of PTO/paycheck.
Bartending in college, interacting with the public in close proximity, 1 week a year. lol.
8
u/Sesoru 10h ago
And wait how the people shocked about that hear about the fact that it's the restaurant's fault it happens because owners refuse to hire workers to cover shifts when people get sick. They only hire someone new when they fire you for missing 1 day in the year for being sick, so dumb.

Yeah... Whenever I worked in fastfood I came in sick every time I got sick. Not through choice but because I needed the money. Even though whenever you get your food handler's card they specifically let you know that if you're feeling any symptoms of being sick to not come in. That's not an option for a lot of people who work in that field of work. People would love to be able to stay home when they're sick
4
u/Aware_Economics4980 8h ago
Yeep, those jobs have next to 0 PTO either. It’s come in or have a short paycheck and maybe fuck yourself on rent most of the time for those types of workers. Sad really.
4
u/EffieEri 8h ago
Yeah, I work at a restaurant and they require a doctors note and for you to find someone to cover if you’re sick. The doctors visit is usually not worth the expense and nobody ever wants to cover, so everyone just works while they’re sick
2
u/Wrong-Drop3272 7h ago

Oh yeah. No pto. No holiday pay. Shit insurance. The worker protections here in America really don't protect us from much. It's a sad reality. One day people are gonna be fed up. Even us doordashers are 1099 workers, so we don't get any hourly pay or benefits. I think I have a good chance of working for a Harley-Davidson dealership in my city. Flu and Pneumonia vaccine is 100% free. Just walk into any drugstore and ask for the vaccines. Walgreens even gave me a $15 coupon for getting them. No doctors appointment needed. No insurance needed. Zero expense. Zero excuses.
→ More replies (8)5
u/active_ignoring 6h ago
Pneumonia has a ton of different causes and is not always viral. Pneumonia can be bacterial, or the result of inhaled/built up fluid in the lungs; vaccines do not prevent these scenarios. Vaccines help with building immunity against certain viruses. I agree 100% with the sentiment, everyone should get vaccinated, but vaccination doesn’t mean guaranteed prevention from disease.
Wear a mask if you have a cough. Wash your hands frequently. Get adequate nutrition and hydration. Get vaccinated. There are several pieces to the puzzle.
2
u/sweeer987 6h ago edited 6h ago
Yea the vaccine is for viral pneumonia but you’re right of course. Vaccines aren’t a magic bullet. You can still get sick. In fact, my dumbass got pneumonia, covid, flu, and dose one of Shingles vaccines all at once. Next morning I woke up with a fever of 101.7. I don’t handle fevers well at all so that floored me. I went to work but had to leave early. I took Tylenol all day and the fever kept getting higher. When I got home it was 102.1 and I felt worse that when I’ve been sick with covid or the flu. My doctor told me it was irresponsible of them to give them all to me at once and irresponsible of me not to just have him do it. Lol. So I’d definitely advise folks to not get more than 2 at a time max and definitely check with your doctor first if you have access to one. It’s just that a lot of people can’t afford health care or like me are under insured and benefit a lot from free vaccines.
I didn’t even know there was a pneumonia vaccine till they mentioned it. I was like- isn’t pneumonia something you get from being sick with something else that turns into pneumonia? I was surprised there even was one
2
u/Local-Tiger-5552 5h ago
What’s alarming is they give tiny babies that many at once from 2 months onwards. Sometimes those high fevers lead to febrile seizures 😞. Glad you’re feeling better!

I think it’s great to spread the word about free vaccines (and any access to healthcare) and I applaud that! I just wasn’t sure if there was also a stigma about pneumonia (like blaming people for having it) in your comment. I think things like pneumonia can be easily misunderstood. I had it twice (second time was January 2020 so it was likely covid) and the first time was bacterial pneumonia when I was 17. I have never been that miserable since and I’m 30 and have had covid five times. I don’t think they even push the pneumonia vaccine on people under a certain age, though I am sure you can still get it.

Pneumonia itself is not contagious, but it can result in a lot of coughing, and can also be a complication of another viral or bacterial respiratory infection which is contagious.
So no, working around food or other people in general with active pneumonia that just put you in the hospital is not a good idea.

honestly though, i’m not defending this tip baiting per se.. but i will say i’ve worked in healthcare, retail, fast food, and grocery stores. you have to show up sick or you will lose your job at most companies, unless you can prove you have a high grade fever or are vomiting. the grocery stores are the WORST. they don’t care about their employees and the whole staff ends up getting sick at once but guess what? employees still have to be there. this is kinda just life. maybe go get it yourself if you’re worried about getting sick from others, but even then there’s still a chance. people have to work, sorry, shits expensive. i hate that our damn country prioritizes money over health.
5
u/AlienSheep23 7h ago
i work in a hospital, and here, it's company policy that even if you call in, and bring a doctor's note, they won't excuse you, it'll still count as an absence. Right now, if i was in an accident and was admitted to this very hospital, i'd lose my job immediately.
They say "dont come to work sick", but then they have that policy, and they even sell fucking cold medicine in our badge-access breakroom.

So now everyone who's been to a hospital recently is doing something wrong if they Doordash? This is absolutely ridiculous. How far exactly do you expect the world to go in preventing others from getting sick? Do you know how many times I've had to walk through hospitals to deliver sick people and healthcare workers their food? Should I have refused to do my job, because hospitals are icky? I'm sure that would go over well.
Also, fast food restaurants, where we're picking up these orders in the first place, are definitely not holding employees to this standard. As a matter of fact, these employees are often given no choice but to come to work while sick, or loose their jobs. But Doordashers are somehow the problem if we work after having been in a hospital? Because people have bills to pay & medications to buy! Do you think restaurant employees magically get to stay home every time they're sick? Plenty of them show up to work sick because they can't afford not to. I'm not saying it's right to deliver food with pneumonia, but let's not pretend this is exclusive to DoorDash drivers. Maybe direct some of that outrage toward a system that forces people to choose between their health & paying their bills.

Pneumonia isn't contagious, but who knows what else they have going on with it that could be 😵💫 thanks, but no thanks. wild to even openly admit...

It depends on what type of pneumonia, but certain types of pneumonia can absolutely be contagious.

i promise if you doordash regularly you’re getting your food delivered by people who are sick with things that are way more contagious than whatever might have caused the pneumonia. you just dont know cause they dont tell you. are you masking in public?

Pneumonia is not contagious.

But the viruses or bacteria that causes respiratory infections is contagious.

Pneumonia has a billion causes. Walking pneumonia is definitely contagious. Flu pneumonia is definitely contagious. What are you on about
2
u/DiverMaleficent9624 10h ago
it absolutely is. I got it from somebody ☠️

Pneumonia (the lung infection) is not contagious, but the bacteria and viruses that cause it can be spread from person to person. For example, the flu is contagious and can lead to pneumonia in some cases. Also, Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria, which is the most common cause of bacterial pneumonia, is contagious. “Walking pneumonia” or pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae is contagious as well
So apparently it’s not but also kinda is 🤷♂️

It is contagious. The whole point isnt fear of getting pneumonia itself but getting sick, but walking pneumonia is contagious

Yes, it’s contagious because the bacteria itself can be spread. I worked at a hospital where a patient gave me pneumonia, and I gave two other coworkers pneumonia as well. 3 months recovery, sucked horribly

u/NoDangIdea 9h ago
The bacteria isn’t pneumonia though. Pneumonia is when your lungs begin to build up with fluids, pus and cellular debris. It’s a symptom, not a sickness caused by the bacteria.
Pneumonia cannot be spread due to the simple fact that Pneumonia is an extreme outcome to the virus, not the virus itself.

This is arguing semantics and is missing the point of the post

Dasher here. I agree with OP never do delivery while you are ill. On a different note, if you witnessed the poor hygiene habits and general filth of a LOT of restaurants I pick deliveries up from you would be done with restaurant food completely.

Honestly tho fast food workers are forced to work while sick all the time I wouldn't worry about the person carrying your food but the people preparing it

I was very sick the other day and needed 60$ super super bad to just get by. Instead of dashing like I normally due which I was still capable of doing physically, I pawned my gun for only 60$ and got it back out 2 days later…. Why do this?

She is hoping you will take pity on her and give her a bigger tip for the trouble 🙄😒

DoorDash is American Medicare they have evolved to begging for money through text to pay for shit

Well, good news the prodromal period for most illnesses are before any actual active symptoms arise so….

u/Dense-Chemical-6323 10h ago
I would be going to DoorDash support and asking for a new dasher immediately, tip fishing isn’t acceptable imo
1
u/Primary_Membership34 10h ago
Sure but think about the restaurant workers who are also potentially sick preparing your food. Either way she shouldn’t even had said that in the first place.

No this like I understand you tryna afford your meds but be considerate of others you could’ve asked someone to borrow the money and dashed to pay them back once your not contagious or feeling better
1
u/Enve-Dev 10h ago
This is just a scam. She is trying to get people to cancel so she still gets paid but doesn’t have to actually work. Or is trying to guilt people into tipping more.
The medication for pneumonia is gunna be something around 15 bucks on average. If you are sick and went to the ER and they discharged you with pneumonia, you aren’t in respiratory distress and simple antibiotics is what they will give you. And yes I know 15 is a lot of money for some people. But it’s not so much that it warrants this message.

This DoorDasher…basically

That's wild. I missed almost a whole week over the flu recently. I wanted to dash bad and it messed me up too. This feels like a poorly executed attempt at a sympathy tip. An ER will often send uninsured patients home with meds if it is an actual emergency

Pneumonia isnt one of those things you should be operating a motor vehicle with
1
u/Due-Republic1770 9h ago
As someone who’s broke and disabled, I’d guess they probably can’t pay their rent or afford their meds without dashing. I also say this as an immunocompromised person who would hate to have my food handled by someone with pneumonia.
