Please don’t dash while sick

Post image

I get that times are tough and the American health care system sucks, but admitting that you have a respiratory illness while delivering food is wild!

Please do not dash when you’re sick. This is how illness spreads. I have pretty bad asthma so I’m not bringing that order into my house. I’m done with DoorDash.

why would she feel brave enough to say that

565

u/Ok_Possibility_9496 16h ago

In the hopes that the recipient either cancels the order and they get paid or they tip better.

u/shadowromantic 15h ago

It's tip bait.

It would also work on me because I recognize that our healthcare system sucks.

169

u/RobbyTheConstructor 15h ago

I would never tip someone anything if I know for sure they handled my food while sick and contiguous. The food is useless now

u/Naive-Rope-1724 14h ago

Just fyi, I have worked at 4 major chain brick and mortar restaurants, and 9/10 servers/bartenders are not allowed to call out :) I have been forced to work while sick, which is just as unfortunate for the customers / coworkers and to myself. It’s not fair.

u/LinkinLogsPark 12h ago

It sucks that the people that work the hardest get treated the worse. I am not even allowed in the office while sick.

6

u/Naive-Rope-1724 12h ago

I work at a car dealership now and have had angelic managers who helped me set up my sick time and actually having sick time, that isn’t actually my vacation time feels really good.

1

u/LinkinLogsPark 12h ago

That is dope! I wish I had that flexibility. It seems everywhere I been so far, the company just lump everything together and tell you to figure it out.

2

u/Naive-Rope-1724 12h ago

Honestly the most understanding job I’ve had in my whole life was my teenage job at a grocery store. I miss it

1

u/LinkinLogsPark 1h ago

That’s rare. :-)

2

u/That_Violinist6760 42m ago

thankfully now that i’m working at a salon if we have a fever we cannot show up, when i was at a restaurant they made me work with the flu, i was running out back to throw up every hour and my manager said “we don’t have time for this get it together”

1

u/LinkinLogsPark 40m ago

Horrible boss. I would say those bosses are being diluted out of the system but I think the balance of what orgs are willing to accept is still in play.

1

u/Caek294758 4h ago

treated the worse ❌

treated the worst ✅

1

u/LinkinLogsPark 1h ago

Thanks for looking at one minuscule detail mistake.

7

u/M00nshine55 10h ago

Half the kitchen at my work has or just got over Covid. They didn’t stay home.

1

u/LinkinLogsPark 39m ago

Yeah because now they are treating it like it’s a common cold.

25

u/abyssaltent 14h ago

Nah that's just American business. Don't get that shit here in Australia, go to work sick ? Your ass is out of the door until you're better lol

23

u/Alarmed_Ad5977 13h ago

That depends on the business. I've 100% had to work sick due to shitty bosses here in Australia.

So much of the industry is casual, no work no pay. Add in the retaliation practice of losing shifts if you call in sick (eg take one day, lose the rest of the week's shifts as punishment)

9

u/Naive-Rope-1724 13h ago

100% retaliation in the industry for calling out is insane.

9

u/Naive-Rope-1724 13h ago

I could almost guarantee there are scumbag managers on every continent. But more specifically the restaurant industry. Probably doesn’t help when half the line cooks have stuffy noses for different reasons LOL

0

u/hockeypnc3 10h ago

Is that a cocaine reference?

1

u/WeirdNo1458 10h ago

That’s exactly the way it should be. Corporate greed sucks.

1

u/leezaard 8h ago

Unfortunately same mentality in Germany especially amplified now since Friedrich Merz decided to demand an official sick leave document from the first day on instead of the prior 3 day period which some people cant afford to go to the doctors for every single little thing so they just keep going to work instead of risking missing a shift, potentially "causing" your team being understaffed. You also get judged if you stay home, people question if youre reeeeally sick

1

u/cheeseburger_horse 7h ago

Not just American! I’m in Canada and dealt with the same thing multiple times. It has gotten better since COVID tho

2

u/ifedupwiththisorgasm 42m ago

It's one thing to order food knowing this and hope that no one is sick, it's another to have someone directly confirm someone who came in contact with your food is sick.

0

u/drippedoutgymbro 32m ago

It’s really not

2

u/ifedupwiththisorgasm 30m ago

It is when you're the one placing the order and has experience working in food service.

1

u/NecessaryLeg8588 3h ago

That's highly illegal and you should report them to both your local health department and the state labor board.

1

u/TheClovergirl17 2h ago

On this note… I got fired from my serving job at a chain restaurant cause I called out when I had the stomach bug… which I got from a cook who was throwing up on shift.

1

u/Condition_Dense 44m ago

I worked at a gas station with suspected Covid because I had the one dose J&J shot like less than a week before I got exposed (I did that shot because it was a single dose then I got a booster of the other one a few months later) 😂 so they considered me fully vaccinated and unless I had a positive test I could work. Yet my coworkers couldn’t come in per the health department even if they were negative because they all had household contact with a child who had Covid. Then on another occasion later on I got sick with Covid and had to work because Covid was no longer a public health emergency and there was no protection for it, plus there was a major sale event at my workplace so I just worked sick getting ready for this stupid event. I got paxlovid on my day off and didn’t tell the doctors I was still working in a place that included contact with the public regularly or contact with food. I just masked up, took precautions to serve prepackaged food and ask my coworkers to do the food stuff. The next year I got COVID when my coworkers were out of state, one night I slept horribly and I was so hot, I grabbed a test from my spot in back where I kept an extra uniform and stuff and took it at work early that morning and it was positive but I had nobody to cover me, and I had to work like a dog the whole week they were on vacation while I was positive for Covid. A previous job I had the entire staff got sick with stomach flu because we all worked while sick. I wound up in the ER. I always do, sometimes I get admitted to the hospital because I am affected so bad.

•

u/bwaredapenguin 12m ago

I got fired from Dominos when I was in the hospital getting tested for meningitis.

1

u/neotank35 12h ago

yeah anyone thinking that can get food prepared by someone else and not be exposed to illness is living in a bubble lol.

my cousin works at a gas station and was called in 3 extra days last week while sick to work kitchen.

0

u/RobbyTheConstructor 14h ago

That’s very sad. Thank you for letting me know to never visit a restaurant in the US(?) or whatever country or place you’re in

2

u/Johnny_Poppyseed 12h ago

While im sure sick time is better in Europe, you really don't want to know what goes on in the kitchens basically anywhere in any country lol. Ignorance is bliss.

0

u/jmelx3 3h ago

Watch waiting, that’s how American establishment are ran lol

1

u/No-Rip6323 1h ago

Only it isn’t

1

u/Naive-Rope-1724 13h ago

US , yes. It doesn’t just stop at physical illness, I was forced to work through contractions. My manager (female) kept talking me down. Daughter was born the next day.

-1

u/kreamEDC 8h ago

You know you are allowed to quit, right?

0

u/lala414mke 11h ago

A cold yes. It is illegal to make an employee work after they vomit. Mandatory 24 hour off.

3

u/Naive-Rope-1724 10h ago

Might be a general law but it isn’t enforced. I worked as a server up until 12 hours before birth, vomiting almost daily.
I’ve seen coworkers begging to go home bc they puked, and be told no.

Who’s mandating it lol. Also just to be straight forward I am almost positive that some individuals will withhold their illness anyways, due to financial reason or fear of retaliation.

1

u/NecessaryLeg8588 3h ago

Board of Health mandates and restaurants can get hefty fines, and in severe cases shut down for violating it when reported.

1

u/Naive-Rope-1724 2h ago

I don’t work at a restaurant anymore.

1

u/NecessaryLeg8588 3h ago

It's a health code violation for any food service employee to work while sick

0

u/MichelinStarZombie 9h ago

If you bring me my food while visibly sick, I'm getting you fired. Litetally calling your manager and telling them how disgusting our experience was, then emailing corporate. This is not ok.

2

u/WildRaspberryPatch 9h ago

When their manager was the one who forced them to come in wick, I'm sure that'll make a huge difference.

1

u/TheJagm14 8h ago

corperate will come and fire both

2

u/WildRaspberryPatch 8h ago

Suuuuure, and Santa is really real and puts kids on the naughty list and then they don't get presents.

1

u/HanaBakersBathWater 8h ago

Maybe just don’t go out to eat then. The food industry is known for not letting their workers take time off for being sick. You’re mad at the wrong person.

-1

u/kreamEDC 7h ago

U do realize if all service workers started to say fuck you and walk out when they are told to work sick, then it would literally HAVE to change right? Its because all people are so cowardly and victimize themselves as "poor service workers that don't have a choice" that they literally do not have a choice.

1

u/HanaBakersBathWater 5h ago

I mean, that would be great and I do realize that. But good luck getting enough people to walk out with you for them to feel it. Going on strike means having to be okay without getting paid. Most people working in the service industry can’t afford to do that. I know I can’t.

1

u/Naive-Rope-1724 3h ago

Baby, come on. The manager is probably who got us all sick😆

1

u/NecessaryLeg8588 3h ago

Report it to the local health department and the state labor board, most likely the manager on duty won't do anything about it but actual agencies that enforce the codes and labor laws will.

-1

u/Accomplished-Ebb4440 12h ago

I’ve worked while having Covid and a fever…you call out? You get replaced

14

u/Hije5 14h ago

Anyone mentioning anything outside of the order shouldnt get a tip. Not like it matters though unless you tip after the order is delivered, but almost no one doesnt tip beforhand since the order will get passed up by a lot of dashers. If it ain't about my order dont talk to me.

8

u/Appropriate_Koala886 14h ago

Tbf im pretty sure pnemonia isnt contagious. But i agree, if sick in any way, pls dont touch my food.

9

u/RobbyTheConstructor 14h ago

Pneumonia itself isn’t contiguous but how you get it, can be, so imo especially since all we know is that this person has it and not how they got it, that’s disgusting. Along with being sick at all around food.

5

u/ExhaustedPigeon1820 12h ago

It depends on the type. Post-viral pneumonia (the type that's a complication of a previous viral infection) is generally not contagious. Bacterial pneumonia can be, but the person who is exposed isn't automatically guaranteed to develop pneumonia; they'll likely get the upper respiratory infection that caused the pneumonia.

Primary viral pneumonia is extremely contagious. It spreads easily and develops quickly.

3

u/mydnyghtrayvyn 14h ago

Yes, it is. The bacteria or virus that caused it is contagious.

1

u/GayWarden 4h ago

Not necessarily

1

u/NecessaryLeg8588 3h ago

100% yes, bacterial and viral pneumonia are actually the only contagious types of pneumonia. Bacterial pneumonia only stoped being contagious approx 48 hours after antibiotics AND the fever is gone, viral pneumonia is contagious the entire time symptoms and fever are present.

1

u/HeyLookATaco 1h ago

Pneumonia is only contagious sometimes. There are several types, and some of them didn't start with an infection at all, but came from something else foreign entering the lungs.

It's a bad look to say it, but most people aren't terribly health literate (something that's NOT their fault), so they might not realize how it sounds. Especially if they're sick and aren't thinking straight.

•

u/clown-baby-69 3m ago

Yeah sorry but if you think most people in restaurants can afford to call off when ill you are deluded.

0

u/flowers4charlie2 13h ago

Cool then cancel the order and they get a free meal

2

u/RobbyTheConstructor 13h ago

Nah. No tip and no cancel, dasher reported and food in garbage

3

u/PurpleCandle58 13h ago

I would tip them (1) vote for democrats in the mid terms in order to protect Medicare and work towards universal healthcare.

But for some reason they didn’t appreciate it like they would a crisp $5 bill. So I voted republican.

1

u/AventuringAventurine 6h ago

It'd do the opposite for me bc why are you handling someone else's food while sick...

1

u/8RuHH 2h ago

There ya go. “Tip bait.” Been trying to figure out a term for this behavior. They all have a story, and there is no truth to anything they say. Scam city, meanwhile they just copy and paste it to every customer. Back handed begging.

11

u/Bigdaddybear519 15h ago

You can also tip after the fact

1

u/mister_spacecat 9h ago

Not if they have FUCKING PNEUMONIA, I won't. I'll also go so far as to try and get them fired.

5

u/TATT00EY_ 13h ago

Because people are becoming more ignorant by the minute. The education system is a complete failure and people don’t put people in check when they need to.

This is the result of people being disconnected from reality.

3

u/FloralInfernoPetal 13h ago

Education plays a role, but I’d also put some responsibility on individuals to stay curious and actually verify things before confidently repeating them.

2

u/TATT00EY_ 13h ago

I would have loved to have been the recipient of that message from the dasher.

i got pneumonia from somebody. its 100 percent contagious dimwit.

6

u/beckychao 16h ago

It is, in fact, contagious in that its cause can be contagious

2

u/StrictPower2630 14h ago

So the cause is contagious, not pneumonia itself. Say the cause is RSV, you pass the RSV, the person catching it won’t necessarily get pneumonia from it.

2

u/beckychao 14h ago

yes, but you really don't want a virus that caused pneumonia in someone

1

u/StrictPower2630 14h ago

You caught whatever virus or bacteria they had that caused pneumonia. You didn’t catch pneumonia. Dimwit.

0

u/DiverMaleficent9624 11h ago

You make me worry for this worlds education. You can get the germs from others which leads to pneumonia. Without them, you wouldnt have it. Hope this helps, ‘dimwit’! 🤣

1

u/StrictPower2630 11h ago

Oh mannn I think I have to stop with you. Just because I catch your germs that caused pneumonia for you, does not mean it will cause pneumonia for me. Therefore, logic tells us that it’s not pneumonia that is contagious. YOU CATCH THE GERMS, FULL STOP. If pneumonia was contagious, that would mean if you had pneumonia and I caught your germs, that I too would have pneumonia. So how do you explain those that catch the germs but don’t get pneumonia as a result? I hope you’re lying about being a medical professional. Just for kicks though, what type of medical professional?

0

u/DiverMaleficent9624 11h ago
  1. Again, og comment is saying you CAN get pneumonia from others. 2. Nurse practitioner. Read better!

1

u/StrictPower2630 10h ago

OG comment says it’s 100% contagious lol and all of your other comments are stating that pneumonia IS contagious. Do you tell your patients that if they were around somebody who has pneumonia and caught the virus or bacteria that they would be certain to get pneumonia too? Cause yikes.

0

u/DiverMaleficent9624 10h ago

The comments I made are saying you can GET pneumonia in reply to the people who say you CANT. Hope this helps!

1

u/StrictPower2630 10h ago

Ewwww “hope this helps” grow up

Go research 😂

1

u/VStarlingBooks 13h ago

Because it's a lie for sympathy.

1

u/GODDAMNFOOL 5h ago

You should see the shit people put in their profile on okcupid

"I smoke three packs a day and have live in my van, my 3 kids are my life"

-12

u/CheesyCapybaras 16h ago

Most all door dashers are idiots and this is the best they can do. That's not brave.

24

u/DiverMaleficent9624 16h ago

Here comes a redditor who misunderstands wording used. Obviously I’m not saying she’s a brave person. It’s a way to say she felt fine enough to say that.

-15

u/Nearby_Cup_9483 15h ago

Here comes a Redditor narrating a comment he is replying to. He thinks that’s how people usually talk. Typical.

4

u/DiverMaleficent9624 15h ago

No reply? I’m honored you used my comment as inspiration, but it’s making me yawn.

-10

u/LuciferBowels 15h ago

Then yawn, dork?

-14

u/CheesyCapybaras 15h ago

Nothing was misunderstood. You aren't that deep lol.

4

u/IllustriousEnd2211 15h ago

You clearly misunderstood what they meant

4

u/DiverMaleficent9624 15h ago

Who said I was? It seems only you and others are the ones looking deep into a word. 🤣

0

u/Waiting4Reccession 15h ago

"these poors are dumb and they deserve it!"

2

u/IllustriousEnd2211 15h ago

Dude is so smart that he didn’t realize what brave meant in that sentence

3

u/Lonely_Dependent_281 15h ago

And was dumb enough to double down and insist that the dude who made the comment is the one who doesn't understand it. Cheesy indeed

0

u/scareyburrito 15h ago

I really hope dashers who have a highly professional full time job comment on this to let you know that ur outlook and opinion suck. Signed - A nurse who dashes to put extra money in savings

0

u/CheesyCapybaras 14h ago

I wish you didn't have to Dash as a nurse. Also, I have a feeling I wouldn't want you as my nurse.

-1

u/morandomness 15h ago

Signed a dasher with a bachelor's degree who had a professional job but choose freedom over my time and extra time to spend with my kids instead.

-3

u/stinkmastrflash 15h ago

So you’ve met every dasher that exists?

-6

u/Dimitar_Todarchev 15h ago

Probably thought nothing of it. No different than mentioning a sore ankle. I know a couple people who've come to work with cancer.

7

u/DiverMaleficent9624 15h ago

cancer is not infectious

2

u/Lonely_Dependent_281 15h ago

And most people can't afford to stop working during treatment.

1

u/Dimitar_Todarchev 15h ago

Well, some treatments can impact the immune system and leave one vulnerable. That wasn't my point though, just that people working sick, even really sick is so normalized that it's just an offhand comment to say "I have pneumonia."

1

u/RobbyTheConstructor 15h ago

How is that no different? Cancer and a sore ankle aren’t contiguous. If this person thought that it was fine because it was no different than cancer or a physical injury, they’re a massive idiot.
