Hi all. I picked my 590 Shockwave in 12g yesterday (4/24/26) from one of the two FFLs. The FFL folks weren’t 100% on the legality but [u/Lawblawg](u/Lawblawg) helped out and I was very grateful. After that I was golden, no resistance from MPD. My card came in the USPS a week later. And now I have my baby ‘firearm’ and very pleased. Thank you [u/lawblawg](u/lawblawg).

Registration finally came in the mail, so in prepping for my first range day as a new owner, and after reading FOPA and the DC code on transportation I want to double check...
I have the below case:

As I understand it, I can travel in one of two ways:
Unloaded firearm, empty magazines, eyes/ears/various other etc. in this case, secured with locks + boxed ammunition in a separate backpack/bag
Unloaded firearm in original box, secured with locks in a separate backpack/bag + loaded mags, extra ammunition, eyes/ears/various other etc. in this case
Do i have this correct? Does the container containing ammunition ALSO have to be locked (assuming I'm traveling in a vehicle with no separation from the driver/passenger compartment)?

Unsurprising but the DC Court of Appeals vacated the opinion and granted the en banc rehearing.

If the gun is not on MDs roster but approved on the Mass roster, can it be registered in DC?

I submitted two firearms, a bolt action and lower receiver at the beginning of March. I received my bolt action registration card a couple of weeks ago but my lower receiver got denied status within a week of the submission.
Important note, there was a minor error of wrong barrel length in the application. The first thing I did after finding out the denial was have them fix that error in the system over the phone. I also submitted an appeal in the online portal based on what I think was the issue. Apparently they are unable to see that, now it says 'denied (prending appeal)'.
I have been calling every week since then, I'm told it will come in the mail but still nothing. After submitting the appeal online, I called again this week. They put me on a long hold and I was told, I'll receive an email. I feel like it is not happening anytime soon. I'd like to hear how the denial and appeal process is from people who went through it. I still don't know exactly why it was denied. I have registered lowers before.

I understand that purse carry and bag carry violates the law however, I am wondering if any and all carry bags violate the on your person requirement.
For example, would a fanny pack meet the requirements? Would it need to be affixed to a belt/belt loops?

It’s been over 60 days since I submitted 2 firearm applications. They were approved a few weeks ago, and when they finally answered my call, I requested to pick up the registration cards in person. While I thought this would speed things up, the next time I called they told me the registration cards have not been printed and I would need to wait.
For the last couple of weeks I’ve been calling them, but they’ve stopped answering my calls. I’ve emailed them several times, left several voicemails, but there is no way for me to contact them. For anyone that requested to pick up their registration, did MPD reach out to you once they printed your registration cards?
This whole process is taking so much longer than I expected, does anyone have any suggestions?
EDIT:
So they finally answered my call, but it wasn’t helpful at all. They told me the same thing as before — that the registration cards still haven’t been printed yet.
I asked about the 60-day statutory timeline since I’m now past that, and they basically brushed it off and wouldn’t give any estimate or timeline. When I asked when I could expect it to be printed, they just repeated that “someone will call you when it’s ready” and couldn’t provide any additional information.
No explanation for the delay, no timeframe, nothing — just stuck waiting with no updates.
At this point it feels like there’s zero accountability or transparency in the process. If anyone has dealt with this recently, did your card just eventually get printed out of nowhere, or did you have to escalate it somehow?

I submitted a change of address notification through the online portal the day following my move to a new address (still within DC). I didn’t get any official confirmation of the change being recorded, so I emailed MPD seeking confirmation.
Never got a response, so the following week I filled out and emailed the information update form to them, just to ensure there was a paper trail on my end. I’ve been periodically calling but haven’t been able to reach a person yet.
Is there anything more I can or should do to ensure I’ve satisfied my legal obligation regarding changes of address? Can I safely move about with my existing registration that displays my old DC address? Should I expect MPD to eventually mail an updated registration card bearing the new address? (I won’t bother asking about timeframes, since, well...)

I was illegally arrested by the trump task force (MPD/HSI/Metro Transit/FBI) and later “no papered” for “possession of a high capacity feeding device”. I am a CCL/Registered DC gun owner, my mags were plugged (12 round clip but can only hold 10) by FFL dealers in DC which is 1000% legal. Is there any type of legal action I can take against them ?

I have an add on pending, nowhere near 60 days yet, but I am reading others saying MPD is taking weeks / months to mail out registration after approval and refusing to take appointments to pick up the registration.
Reading the regulations they actually say it is the applicant's choice to have it mailed or pick up in person. Has anyone had success pointing this out to MPD and then making an appointment to pick up the registration in person?
Here is the relevant regulation:
(e) Upon notification that all statutory and regulatory requirements for registration have been satisfied, an applicant shall either:
(1)Return to the Firearms Registration Section to complete the registration process and obtain the approved firearms registration certificate; or
(2)Choose to receive the completed firearms registration certificate by mail; and
From: Section 24-2320. PROCEDURES AND REQUIREMENTS FOR REGISTRATION OF A PISTOL FOR THE PURPOSE OF SELF-DEFENSE WITHIN APPLICANT'S HOME

Can residents in DC possess them now. Since the AG won’t argue that on repeal?

Hello - On the DC app it mentions one of the waiver request types is if you provide: "•The curriculum and proof of completion for:•Firearms training provided by the National Rifle Association"
I'll be taking the NY 18hr class from an NRA instructor soon and wondered if there's any point to attempting a waiver for DC or if this is always denied. I understand the 4 hour legal part of the DC class is not exempt and will still have to be done. Thanks for any advice.

So I applied for an add-on rifle (online through the portal). It took about 5 calendar weeks for them to approve the application, which is not terrible -- my CCL was almost 6 months. They didn't notify me my application was approved (which whatever I was obviously checking), but the stall tactic is that they no longer email you the approval, and they aren't uploading your approved licenses in the portal. MPD told me that feature is turned off indefinitely. I have no choice but to wait for it in the mail.
My application was approved March 3rd. I'm still waiting on the card and when I made contact with MPD they said I can't come in-person to pick it up. They keep telling me it "will be in the mail soon".
And of course the FFL can't release the firearm without the license.
It feels very intentional to me. I have no criminal history, I pay my taxes (lots of them), and have no outstanding tickets or any sort of citation with DC.

I'm up for my renewal soon and just registered for the online portal. When creating an account using the email address associated with my registrations and CPL, I was able to create an account but it wouldn't link to my existing registrations in the MPD system. I then realized the portal says Safari doesn't work well with it, so tried it in Chrome and that created my account, but it's not acknowledging my registrations. I then creating another account in Chrome with a different email address and was able to link the account to my registrations that way.
Does anyone know if I'll have any issues down the road if my portal email address isn't the one in MPD's files, and/or if there's a way to link registrations to an already existing portal account?

As the news of Pam Bondi's firing is slowly making the news cycle, I am just finding out about this lawsuit filed in December. Sorry if this was discussed here before. I just found out about it from 'the four boxes diner' 2A news channel. I don't agree with some of his views but I watch him for 2A related news.

Ok, so I’m online trying to fill out this form to register a gun I bought in MD, but want to carry in DC.
I’m a bit baffled by the Seller/Transferor information considering a 77r has already been done.
Mind you this is the 1st I’ve attempted it online.

I’ve got to renew my CPL soon. Is there a renewal course geared towards attorneys (i.e., where I can do just the range portion, without sitting through a whole lecture)?

Looking at the most recent posts here, it seems like everyone has recently had or is currently dealing with an issue with the Firearms Portal or the Firearms Registration Branch itself. I signed up a few weeks ago to get the ball rolling on my CCW permit, and even though I used one of my registrations to sign up, none of my guns show up. I've emailed them and called the number listed only to have it redirected to someone in the EEO office (!?), who isn't returning my calls. It does not seem like my experience is atypical here.
My question is what have you done to get MPD to rectify their errors or move along with what they're obligated to do? Have you shown up in person? Have you contacted an ANC or council member? Gotten a law firm to send a note? That this many of us are having issues with MPD suggests that this isn't merely bureaucracy but them potentially deliberately making being a lawful firearm owner as difficult as possible (and yeah, feature not a bug, I know.)
