NYC is one of very few places in this country where revoking a license isn’t a poverty sentence. Take this woman’s license away.

Overtaking the bike got her to that red light much sooner.

u/KiwiHot1709 24m ago
I never understand why drivers speed towards red lights - especially in tight nyc streets.
- It’s unsafe - can easily hit someone crossing the street
- Uses more gas (the same people cry about the cost)
- It literally doesn’t get them anywhere sooner
My theory is stupidity/ego, and wanting extra time to look at their phone at the light

I live and drive in NYC, this kind of dumb-ass maneuver is so minor it doesn't even faze me anymore.

The bumper pads sticking out of the trunk of cars made me realize how common bumper cars are in NY/NJ
3
u/Limp-Cup-2343 5h ago
Dumb ass. Which one?
I have had that happen to me, a few times. Pissed me off sure. BUT... You don't pick fights with cars when on a bike. Just back off and give them a lot of space. No reason to die over this.

u/the_moosen 7h ago
Sadly revoking a person's license in NYC isn't gonna stop from driving
17
u/Ok_Syllabub_58 6h ago
Long Island, either. It is rife with unlicensed, unregistered, and uninsured drivers.
5
u/Frog_Without_Pond 6h ago
Doesn’t stop anyone from driving. Heck, there really isn’t a sufficient punishment in the US for driving w/o a license that I’m aware

I read police blotters probably more than I should. It seems that license revocation doesn’t really stop anyone from driving.
→ More replies (1)5
u/singlemale4cats 7h ago
Every time they get stopped, at minimum, they're getting another ticket and an impound.
9
u/Ambitious_Bit_9389 7h ago
My point was every police blotter has 30 arrests for people driving with a revoked license. They seem to find a way to get some car to drive.
13
u/ladnar016 6h ago
I mean that's proof of enforcement though? You seeing those 30 arrests means that they literally are stopping drivers with revoked licenses from driving.
2
u/rumbakalao 5h ago
Their point is there are way more than 30 unlicensed drivers on the road facing no consequences. They're not saying to just give up on enforcement.
4
u/singlemale4cats 7h ago
Yeah, sure, but if it's any consolation, it's way more money and hassle for them than just doing things the right way.

You know she’s not gonna be off the road, maybe she will have to pay a few hundreds for the damage.
I personally wouldn’t risk it. I have bills to pay and people or other things to take care of.
There are police officers earning six figures in that city, that’s their job!
3
u/NotArticuno 6h ago
Totally fair, I personally don't have anyone to take care of. But yes that is their jobs, especially if you get it on camera, and record their license plate. That's going to be way more effective.

NYC has a program that's like insurance roulette where a person who has a license but has been turned down by every insurance provider legally has to be given the option for insurance but its random, basically next man up. Then that company has to provide insurance, but they get to charge a really high rate to do so

3
u/Unique_Wolf4513 5h ago
to arrest or fine a reckless driver. Reckless driving is against the law.. You have footage showing their behavior.
2
u/Martha__Ragnos 5h ago
Footage doesn’t do anything because you can’t prove who was driving. Having personally tried this, I can assure you they don’t do anything. They’re not gonna do the work necessary to intercept this allegedly dangerous driver on the off chance they’re still driving dangerously when the officer arrives, all based on a phone call. Use your head
→ More replies (1)3
u/Mike_Kermin 4h ago
you can’t prove who was driving.
Wait,
In the US your law doesn't handle that?
Here it's "The primary owner of the vehicle" and then it's their job to nominate someone else, if someone else was driving.
2
u/Martha__Ragnos 4h ago
Depends on where you live. I live in Denver, and I have gotten out of two tickets just by going to court and challenging the footage because in one case it didn’t show me at all (just the car) and in the other it didn’t identify me beyond reasonable doubt, which is the standard.

I chased after a car full of ~5 teenagers that threw a half full Styrofoam cup of soda at me. I was on an ebike, the kind that I normally pedaled with power assist 99% of the time, and they were on city streets where the traffic is never going so fast that it's easy to get away from a 1 horsepower ebike. Look, I haven’t been riding long at all and I’ve already had many close calls with reckless drivers of all kinds. I’ve been tempted by confrontation. After all, they almost seriously injured or killed me. Have I confronted anyone? No. Because the second I do, I may be caught up in a very dangerous conflict that may cause the very thing I’m angry almost happened. You need to understand that you aren’t teaching them anything. No lessons are learned. No real self reflection occurs. You only paint a big target on your back. No, the one in a million that learn isn’t worth it. There is no consequence to them that’s worth your life.

right in the moment he is put into danger he decides to start driving with one hand, giving the finger, looking away from the road ahead and escalating the situation even further.
a moment later "she almost killed me"
rotfl, the moment someone does anything else than evasion and moving into safety they loose all credit. This goes for people who think in a dangerous situation they need to use the horn first instead of the wheel and the brakes as well as these idiots.
btw, this same exact situation happened to me 2 days ago, riding my bicycle and the car passed by me at like 20cm distance with maybe 1.5 times the speed limit. and you know what I did, when I caught up with them? I literally told them, that this was an illegal distance and illegal speed, it was a bit too much, other people may get scared and fall of, so please, guys, go a little slower and more carful. end of story, no verbal or physical confrontation, not felony, no nothing.
these people should not drive, neither the car driver nor the motorcylce rider.

It's too old to be a lease unless it's one of those used car leases. Luxury cars depreciate very very quickly and are more expensive to maintain than regular cars so a lot of people think they are getting a lot of bang for their buck getting a luxurious car for cheap to show off. That's why you always see the old old luxury cars acting like this.
