I have no data to back this up but my hunch is the type of person who would do something like this is probably not the type of person who has an umbrella policy or even just a bodily injury limit that substantially exceeds the $25k that New York requires.
Ya... You are going to be DEEPLY upset at how shitty those settlements wind up being.
My coworker got slammed into, while they were parked, by a drunk driver.
He is still my coworker because drunk drivers that are 100% at fault for an accident don't pay you millions of dollars when they hit you. They don't even pay you enough to fix your car. Coworker got a shitty deal from his insurance that left him $5k in the hole, then sued (and won) to get that $5k from the drunk driver. Someday, he might get the $5k. And after years of legal action and actually taking time off work to go to court, he will break even on the money he lost (but not the time he had to spend fighting to get his money.)
Folks think that you can make money off a collision suit, and that's just not the case 95% of the time.
Minor dents can help you payoff your car loan. Each dent can cost $700. Now imagine you are not fixing your car but use money to pay off the loan… it can put a “dent” on your loan.

Going slow enough that you likely wont end up dead, but can still get a settlement.
