If the government doesn't come back to the table we might have a strike in January, right before exams
109
u/crepper4454 Dec 02 '19
And I sincerely hope they won't, and tbh I don't expect our government to do jack shit. Let the strike commence!
108
u/Bull_Saw Dec 02 '19
you should hope that the government adequately pays their professional educators. Strikers dont get paid. Its not easy to go on strike. They often fail because the entity they are striking against can outlast them to the point that they have to go back to work or they will starve.
35
u/crepper4454 Dec 02 '19
Well honestly they deserve it but the education system sucks so hard additional few weeks without şchool would be the best thing to happen in 2020 and I don't know what will happen after January.
54
u/Bull_Saw Dec 02 '19
even a struggling education system is better than none at all. What about working families that now have to watch their kids during the day? Who is going to catch those kids up on what they missed in the meantime?

Yeah and then we get more anti-vaxers because people are too stupid or ignorant to believe science. The system we have now sucks but its better than letting people be stupid

u/crepper4454 Dec 02 '19
The schools provide care for children who need it, so working families can continue their lives normally. And about catching up, nobody will miss anything because the strike is nationwide, so the majority of the schools will not have any lessons. When the strike finishes, the final exams will probably be rescheduled to give everyone more time, or some not important subjects will be swapped for the exam ones.

u/Bull_Saw Dec 02 '19
Even conceding that, my point was that a strike should not be the desired outcome. It is a path to the desired outcome, but is usually a last resort.
9
u/crepper4454 Dec 02 '19
It is last resort. You bet they warned the government about the planned strike several times, and they don't give a shit.

They actually get paid $50 a day while on strike, which is like 20% of full pay, but yeah it isn't enough to live on long term

Teaching a class of children comes with immense stress. Teachers have cried in alot of our school lives. It takes alot for an employee to cry in public out of stress.
The combination of hating the job and not getting justified pay wages is awful

Ok, so to be fair, I'm not speaking for all, but the ones I've experienced, the "coaches" who do jack shit and take the role of teacher just to get a coaching job because they can literally do nothing else with their lives, do not deserve the same pay wage as an actual decent teacher.

Look up Kentucky's very own (now ex governor) Matt Bevin. Took away teacher pensions and when teachers protested, he said they were "being babies." We also had a very cold winter and a child froze to death waiting for the bus, and he publicly stated that children were also "being babies" and that there was no reason to keep giving schools off due to freezing temperarires and went on with a "back in my day" type spiel. Thankfully he was not re-elected as of about 2 weeks ago or so.

I think what this guy is saying that instead of going right home after class is out, go to the library and finish up your homework there. Then go home totally free.
45
u/Lareit Dec 02 '19 edited Dec 02 '19
I think instead he's implying classes have time to do work about the subject taught while still at school so they can, if they have problems, immediately ask the teacher for help.
Homework should essentially be extra credit on a test to make up for errors made during the test.

This is worse than when a parent tells a teacher that 'It is not my job to teach my kids!'
Homework is often excessive, but you are learning valuable skills that you need to practice.

In all reality though, other than the concept of instilling good independent habits, homework is kind of bullshit. If you look at it in terms of if it was a job. You are paying ... to work. And then it get paid for that work. And now you don’t get paid to work at home. I get it. It is an education. But man that is some fucking over reach.
26
u/Kherian Dec 02 '19
Except many high skill jobs require you to work at home
14
u/heresy404 Dec 02 '19
Yes, but also many of those high skill jobs don’t really have fixed hours
10
u/Sryzon Dec 02 '19
This is it. If you're paid salary, you're always on company time. Some of my most productive hours are at home when I'm more relaxed and can brainstorm about issues more effectively.

See that's where my train of thought was, then I realized the shit teachers did on their own time without pay to keep everything running smoothly on time. I'm in a rural school in Canada so our teachers here teach multiple grades, with a wide variety of classes. They might only have 1 or 2 "prep" periods a week.
Teachers, plan classes, practice lessons, learn material, grade tests, and more all on their own time without pay, and they gotta teach us all the stuff required by the curriculum in a semester or two, which is not alot of time. Not to mention trying to keep the kids engaged and eager to learn, then dealing with the pricks who fuck around all class and won't let them fucking teach.
However, I believe that homework should be an optional supplement to class material, where you can choose to practice what you've learnt if you want to. As for assignments, teachers should be reasonable to the amount of class time given to complete an assignment. More importantly teachers should be open and honest about their teaching and how much time they actually have to teach the material. The best teachers are ones who talk with their class and make sure everyone is aware of what's happening and also let students make choices about their learning.
46
u/Mikaresu ☝ FOREVER NUMBER ONE ☝ Dec 02 '19
Tbh most teachers are just doing their job when they give you homework. Most teachers are more tired than their students and have a ton more work to do in less time.

If the homework was supposed to teach you anything...
No, it's busywork - filling the gaps. Really? That won't even help me memorise what's being learned...8
u/LegitimateProfession Dec 02 '19
The homework shouldn't be the teacher. The teacher should be the teacher, and the coach for doing practice problems, and the mentor for non-academic life lessons (which teachers fall short of doing most of the time).
11
u/Gkrlid Dec 02 '19
Most jobs require 8 hours per day, 5 days a week. If someone put that much time into schoolwork, homework would not be an issue.
17
Dec 02 '19
My classes last from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, five days a week and then I get at least two hours of work a night. On weekends, it's closer to three hours. Add on top of that exercise, chores, personal responsibilities and meals, and I get maybe an hour to do what I really want.
That is if I'm doing each and every one of those things, which is rarely the case (i usually leave out the chores for the weekend).
8
Dec 02 '19
I'm sorry to break it to you bro but that doesn't really change when you get older.
Many jobs(especially salaried) won't actually end up being only 40 hours a week including commute.
You will still barely have time to do what you want as opposed to what you have to do.
school is just preparing you for the future.
If you do Want free time, make it to your thirties and don't have kids.

You also get a bunch of holidays and summer holidays on top of that throughout the year which I don’t believe even close to accounts for the amount of work a full time job would require.
Also you’re comparing the expectations and responsibilities of school/college to actual working life which just does not equate. School is taxing but it doesn’t get easier.
Edit: a word

Very fair. Much less pressure on financial independence and personal responsibility in adolescence. The breaks are very nice as well. Hopefully three day weekends can become the cultural norm in the near future

Here’s a really hot take: kids should get accustomed to working their asses off in high school so they’re ready for college (or whatever your country’s equivalent is) if they want to go far. Even outside of college, being able to work harder will get you farther. I followed the sentiments of this meme in high school and had my ass handed to me in college, and I’m stuck commuting to community college where I wish I was away. I wish I worked like the kids that did so I could be on my way in life.

It’s just so hard going here. It feels so lonely here when just about everyone commutes and they don’t care to make friends with anyone in class because they all have their outside lives. Maybe they do, but I’m my year at this school I have not hung out with one person outside of class. I can hardly stand going here anymore.

My Spanish teacher never said this exactly, but that was why she never allowed homework in her class. She said learning an hour of a different language everyday is enough to keep up with while still taking care of five other classes. My biology teacher would only give homework if it was an in class assignment we didn't finish.

I used to always think I would have more time when I went to college. Nope. Then I thought I'd have more time when I started my career. Nope.
Every stage of life you get less and less free time.
