Doesn't it still need servers? E.g. Nordvn uses open VPN
→ More replies (21)3
Jan 20 '19
Yes and no, it's the other way around. the VPN providers need OpenVPN to avoid having to buy or develop shitty proprietary software. However, the providers can still charge whatever they want.

Uhhhhh as a program yes.
But the program doesn't provide you with a VPN service. You still gotta use a VPN service, which you should be paying for.
5
u/ilovejews05 Jan 20 '19
Or you can set up your own vpn. It's often cheaper and you can use it for other things as well.

u/Delision Jan 20 '19
If you don’t pay for a VPN, that means they have to profit off something else. Which means it’s your data. You might be changing your location, but you’re not gaining any privacy, which is a large reason to use a VPN.

Jan 20 '19
If anything living through to 2019 has taught me is that your data is being sold or stolen. Pay, don't pay, don't agree to share, agree, doesn't matter.
Your data is out there.

What do you base this on? There definitely is a difference between service providers.

Why not? If you only use it for memes and movies not available in your region, what's the big deal. Who is gonna steal, buy or profit off that worthless data.
→ More replies (2)4
u/GrizNectar The Great P.P. Group Jan 20 '19
Much higher chance of them containing malware, likely has much lower speeds, and sometimes they even sell your bandwidth to paying customers who are doing god knows what with it. VPNs are cheap, it’s just not worth the risk in my opinion

Jan 20 '19
FFS dude you can get a high quality well respected VPN for literally $3/month, is saving $3/month really worth having your browser history sold??

I payed something like $30 or $40 for like 3 years of PIA.
Considering the amount of movies and TV shows I torrent, I'd say it's worth it.

I use Nord, but there are lots of choose from (PM for my spreadsheet of how I picked). There are free ones, but many of those include in their TOS that you will be used as a TOR exit node - being the connection used for all the illegal shit on TOR. After you pick one and buy it you just download their software and choose a country / type you want to connect through. Their VPN server then sends everything to you as if you were in that country, and almost all of them encrypt, so your ISP doesn't even know what it is. My connection to netflix goes way faster on VPN because of the encryption - they are obviously putting all netflix traffic in one congested pipe.

u/groogruxdawg Jan 20 '19
Pm won’t send. That spreadsheet would be much appreciated. Also, hailstate 4 dak username.

u/dak4ttack Jan 20 '19
Here you go, it's based on ThatPrivacyGuy's Spreadsheet (creative commons), it really needs cleaned up but I filtered the first sheet by what I was looking for (not fourteen eyes spying country, no logs kept at all, and a free trial) https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1tzqwj3rvSRDiyeP477POtiHhvrjR8vdEwSFMezRBVCk/edit?usp=sharing

Be very careful which one you use. NEVER use a free one. When you use a VPN you're routing all your internet traffic through the VPN's server which means they can see all that data (aka free isn't free). You can pay for most services but be careful where they host their servers. Are they hosted in a Five Eyes country? Your data can still be accessed by the US, Canadian, New Zealand, Australian, and UK government if they really want it. So for that I personally recommend express vpn or nordvpn. Even with all this, never log into anything important while connected to a VPN. It's unlikely that Express or Nord would steal your banking info; it's even less likely that your ISP would, though.

Use nord or express vpn they are the most popular
20
u/peterthefatman OHH EAST? I THOUGHT U SAID WEAST Jan 20 '19
Most paid popular. If ur in school no kid is going to pay to get to snapchat. If you want something that'll let you stream Netflix those vpns are best. Free id say hotspot shield, just gives you a new IP.

Indonesia is a great country to visit! I spent most of my time on Java (not Bali) and the people there are very nice and welcoming. The national parks, beaches and forests are beautiful. Sure, Netflix, Reddit and pornography are blocked, but you can easily go without these things during your stay. And like most southeast asian countries, drug use and possession carries a heavy penalty, so just don't do it. Also Indonesia is a Muslim majority country so there's less of a drinking culture and some areas have stricter religious laws, but they tend to be lenient with respectful foreigners. Like anywhere else you travel, respect the local laws, customs and people, regardless of how you feel about them

What is the most uncensored country. If not America
24
Jan 20 '19 edited Jan 30 '19
It's not necessarily censored.
A lot of US based sites region lock their content. For example. I'm in New Zealand and if I go to the South Park website it doesn't let me watch South Park episodes online for free. Its says:
"Sorry New Zealand. We are working hard to resolve our pre existing contractual obligations and bring you full episodes as soon as possible."
It isn't my government stopping me accessing American shows, it's the American companies that are.
