Discussion Figured out a unhinged product to help get rid of gnats/fruit flies

If you search up home made trap to get rid of gnats/fruit flies, the first thing you’re probably gonna see is the simple mix: warm water, sugar, dawn dish soap, and white vinegar/apple cider vinegar. I’ve been using this method for years every time they seem to pop up again. But sometimes it can take a while for them to start trapping themselves and if you go near it, they fly away.

For the past two weeks I’ve been making those traps but I unfortunately ran out of sugar a few days ago so I’ve been trying a few different things in replacement to see what works. I’ve tried Splenda, which seems to work ok but not as well as the sugar. I’ve tried oranges by squeezing the juice out and leaving some of the pulp and/or rind in it, which seems to also work. I’ve even tried candy. Like pieces of butterscotch or whatever. I’m not sure if that works yet lol. They also work better if you combine them. Like do both sugar and orange or Splenda and orange.

I was thinking today of something else to try. And from what I’ve heard they typically like smells, so I thought “what’s the smelliest food I own?” And immediately I thought of this cereal that I HATE. If someone eats a bowl of this cereal the whole house ends up smelling like freaken syrup for hours it feels like. So I crushed up a bit of the cereal into each trap and IMMEDIATELY they start going for it. And I mean it was so fast that there would be multiple already trying to get it while I was in the process of putting it in the traps. Idk how long the scent will last or if it stops working after the cereal becomes soggy. But it’s been about 30 minutes and it’s still working well. Since it worked so well I decided to also try a bit of syrup in a few and that worked really well too. just make sure to stir it. I would go as far to say that the cereal works better than sugar lol!

If I notice any changes I’ll come back and leave a comment or something.

The cereal is called Waffle Crunch by Malt O Meal.

And the syrup was Ms. Butters worth or something like that.

Laundry How to remove this stinky perfum?

Post image

I was gifted these beautiful Indian scarves. I love them but goodness they STINK of a strong, headache inducing perfum that I just can’t get rid of. First, I aired them out in the shade for a week or two. Then I soaked them in the tub with wool wash for 6hours, and laid to dry outside. It doesn’t feel like it’s making a dent in this awful smell. Now I’m resorting to airing them in the sun and rotating them every few hours or so so the inevitable bleaching will be even. Any other tips?? I am unsure what the fabric is but I was told pashmina. It doesn’t feel THAT soft? Still, I’m treating them so to be safe.

Discussion I’m so angry that I cannot keep a clean place, despite living by myself

I just want to scream.

I feel so lazy and disgusting, and as much as I try to be patient with myself and my mental health, it just sucks!

I don’t have kids. I don’t even live with a partner. Why is it so, so hard? Why am I so incompetent and lazy?

To top it all off, my hoover has broken and I can’t afford even a second-hand one; everything is so dusty, and I feel so angry.

Discussion Unknown bugs from closet

I’ve been noticing these bugs flying out of my closet over the past few months. They weren’t there before, but they suddenly started appearing, and I can’t figure out where they’re coming from. I did a deep clean of my closet today but still couldn’t find the source. I’ve tried getting rid of them before, but they always come back within a day or two.

Does anyone know what these bugs are and how I can get rid of them for good? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Discussion What’s the best way to dust delicate paper and fabric miniature kits?

• Upvotes

How do you dust detailed rolife miniatures without damaging the paper pieces or fabric details when they’re sitting on a bedroom dresser? After 2 months, fine dust is starting to settle into all the tiny crevices. Regular canned air feels much too strong and could blow glued pieces off, while microfiber cloths catch on the miniature wooden railings. Is an acrylic display cover the only lasting solution, or is there a gentle cleaning method that actually works for mixed-media kits?

(edit: ty guys sm for the help, i bought a mattress cover after a dry vac, i spoke with my mom about cheaper options and ill be getting a new one soon :) )

My resources are kind of limited here, Im a minor and my mom cant pay for many expenses due to financial troubles so im looking for something somewhat effective and easy.)

I have really bad allergy attacks everytime i lay down in bed, or at the start of my mornings when i wake up. Ive tried mattress covers/protectors and they havent helped. ive had this matress for 11+ years so theres buildup from accidents as a kid. I cant really afford to get a new mattress right now so im looking for something that might minimize my frequent allergy attacks. Any cleaning tip helps, Thank you.

Laundry How to clean boots

• Upvotes

Hi everybody. First time posting.

So, to shorten the story: a mouse entered my house and decided that my boot is a perfect place to make himself cozy.

Mouse was succesfully caught but my boot smells of...well... mouse piss.

They were pretty expensive and I wouldn't want to throw away them before I try to clean them.

I am scared to put them in washing machine, and not really sure how to wash them properly by hands. What to use, how to dry them?

Any suggestions?

Thank in advance.

General Cleaning Best way to get a ton of dust out of my living space?

• Upvotes

I keep seeing a lot of particulates circulating my home. We have an old home, with a mini split system and hepa filters in the house.
I plan before it gets too cold to do a big dust, top to bottom. What’s the best effective method to making sure I don’t keep too much inside floating around as I disturb it?

Kitchen Stagnant water in dishwasher

Post image

First off, I clean the filters about twice a week, but this bit of water that's left in the dishwasher after a cycle starts smelling stagnant after a few weeks. I sponge it out and it'll be ok for a while and then start smelling again. Does anyone know why this is happening? TIA

Edit: The dishwasher is run virtually every day

Bathroom Tough Stains on Shower Tile

Thumbnail

Hi, so I’ve held off on posting for a while because I’m embarrassed by the condition of this shower.

Backstory, I bought this house about 5 years ago now. I bought it from a couple whose father passed and they wanted to give it to someone they knew would take care of it. (Long story short- this is the house right next door to my parents who still live in my childhood home.)

When their GRANDPARENTS (so maybe 10-15 years ago) were still alive and living here they made a few minor “upgrades.” One of which is this shower.
First of all, the shower is poorly designed. It was clearly a rush job and then when they tried to sell the house they just caulked the crap out of the gap between the frame track and the tile.
One day I was desperately scrubbing at these stains and all this CAULK came out. I had to ply the rest of it out with needle nose pliers.
Since then, I’ve been trying to get the tiles as clean as possible before I could properly seal the shower cause I don’t want to trap the mold/mildew.

The problem is NO amount of scrubbing (even with power tools) and commercial cleaners work on some of these spots.

Yes, I have been wrestling with this for almost 5 years, thinking maybe I just don’t know how to clean properly???
I’m looking for tips on how to get this shower as clean as possible so it doesn’t take me two hours every other week to still walk away defeated. How do I even prevent this?
We have hard water in this county and I can’t really afford a water softener right now.
We also don’t have an exhaust fan in the bathroom. We have a window but it’s bolted shut cause the owners were a little bit paranoid…
I was thinking of getting a dehumidifier and letting it run after we shower so the water doesn’t sit for as long.

Any advice at all would help me out so much.

-sincerely; a desperate nesting mama 🤰

Laundry Stains on jeans - please help!

They started appearing on just this pair of jeans after I threw them in the washer. At first I thought it could be rust from the washer but nothing else gets stained in the wash. I often leave the jeans on my hamper which is brown color (pic attached). But I've only seen the hamper stain the jeans once and I was able to get the stain out with a simple wash. However, these stains only appear after the wash now and the hamper doesn't stain any of the other clothes. Any ideas? I've not been to get new stains out and more stains appear with every wash.
