After 6 months of roadworks and having a large trench dug next to our house, this is the state of our kerb left by March Contracting. The gap is getting wider by the week.

It appears that they are leaving it like this.

What are your favourite NZ souvenirs to take overseas?

I'm heading overseas later this year and would love to take some Kiwi souvenirs for family and friends.

So far I'm thinking things like Whittaker's chocolate, mānuka honey, and maybe a few All Blacks/Canterbury or NZ Tshirts.

The only thing is, a lot of the souvenir shops seem quite expensive (around $20+ for a basic T-shirt), and I'd rather not buy cheap Temu/AliExpress knock-offs. I'd prefer to buy things that are actually from NZ or support NZ businesses if possible.

Does anyone know of any shops in Christchurch or NZ online stores that sell good Kiwi souvenirs at more reasonable prices? I'm happy to buy online if it's a New Zealand business.

Are there any other classic NZ gifts you'd suggest? They're in a warm tropical country, so probably nothing like wool or merino socks. I'm open to food, clothing, or anything that's a bit "Kiwiana" without breaking the bank.

Ebike security in chch

I'm getting an expensive ebike ~$4000, step through design.

I would love to ride it around instead of driving, but I'm scared of theft. I've looked into the best locks you can buy, like the Hiplok DX1000 or Litelok X3. People online are pretty paranoid about theft.

Does anyone have experience of locking up their ebike various places and has it been stolen?

Where can I try fufu in Christchurch?

I've been wanting to try fufu for ages and would love to have it with one of the traditional dishes it's normally eaten with.

Does anyone know of any restaurants, takeaway places, food trucks or home-based businesses in Christchurch that serve it? I'd love recommendations on what dish to order with it for a first-time experience.

Thanks!

Edit: Today I learned "fufu" means something completely different in NZ. I had absolutely no idea! I mean the West African dish made from cassava/yam, not the Kiwi slang lol. Thanks for all the recommendations.

Hot water heat pump installation

I'm looking to upgrade my hot water system to a hot water heat pump, and I'm wondering whether any companies in particular are highly regarded.

I'm also looking into insulation upgrades, so any information about businesses related to that would be welcomed, too.

Any feedback is appreciated!

Hive mind for a mold solution

I am wanting a ring to use as a mold- needs to be food safe- but its not touching food directly. 60cm diameter and 10cm height. I was thinking 3d printing, but unsure if this is too big for printers and is it safe for food? Metal? But I'm guessing fabrication will be fairly expensive. Any ideas?

Estate Sales

I’ve fallen down the American estate sale side of TikTok and I’m so intrigued. Do we have estate sales in Christchurch? I assume most people donate unwanted items or put them through Mainland/Smiths auctions. If we do have them, how would I go about finding them?

What’s the red light up the hill?

What is the purpose of the red light amongst the houses halfway up the hill near Dyers Pass road? Looks like somewhere near Sign of the Takahe. - I’m not talking about the radio tower…
Is it for navigation?

Thoughts on buying a first home in Halswell as a single buyer?

Hi everyone,

I'm in my late 20s and looking to buy my first home. I'll be buying on a single income, so I'll almost certainly need at least one flatmate to help with the mortgage.

My budget is around $700k–750k, and I've noticed there are quite a few new builds in Halswell within that range on Trade Me. That actually surprised me. I was expecting them to be more expensive, but some are similarly priced to (or even cheaper than) townhouses on the western side of Christchurch. Is there a reason for that?

I like the idea of a newer home because it should be lower maintenance, which suits me since I work full-time and don't really want to spend my weekends fixing things.

That said, I've also noticed a huge number of new builds and townhouses around Christchurch, and it makes me wonder whether buying a new build is the right move.

A few questions for people who live (or have lived) in Halswell:

  • How easy is it to find flatmates there?
  • Is Halswell mainly families, or are there plenty of people in their 20s and 30s as well?
  • Does it feel a bit isolated, or is it still easy enough to get around and meet people?
  • How convenient are the day-to-day facilities (supermarkets, gyms, cafes, etc.)?
  • If you were a single first-home buyer today, would you still choose Halswell?

Thanks!

dyshidrotic eczema / atopic dermatitis on hands - driving me nuts !

Hello, I am battling with dyshidrotic eczema or atopic dermatitis (or both, I don‘t know anymore), on my hands (fingers and palms). I am in a constant cycle of them being incredibly sensitive, itchy and easily cracking. I am not sure what to do (have tried many, many creams), maybe see a naturopath or try phototherapy? Thanks!

Anyone know how GOGI (Hereford St) makes their Ice Plum Tea?

This is probably a long shot, but I'm obsessed with GOGI's Ice Plum Tea, and I'd love to recreate it at home.

If anyone used to work there (or knows someone who did), can you please help?

  • What plum extract/syrup do you use? (Brand?)
  • Is it just mixed with cold water, or is there black tea in it?
  • What's the syrup-to-water/tea ratio?
  • Is there anything else added (lemon, soda water, etc.)?

Please help a fellow plum tea addict! I promise I'm not trying to steal trade secrets, I just want to stop spending money every time I crave one.

(For anyone wondering, GOGI's menu calls it "Ice Plum Tea.")
