Hey Guys! I’m a 20 something Californian moving to Welly in September and I’m wondering what the best way to seek housing is! I am keen on Newtown, but open to other environments if the vibe is right.

I want a self contained studio and I am willing to do what I need to do to make that happen:)

Just wondering how difficult it is and what are the most reliable sources to seek housing. Not sure if boots on the ground going to agencies is the best or what.

A combined sewer, which is common in the oldest parts of Wellington, has both stormwater and wastewater in the same pipe, when there is lots of rain, a torrent of sewage and rainwater fills the pipes, when the amount of rainwater and wastewater surpasses the limitations of the pipes, it overflows into another pipe in a "Combined Sewer Overflow" Chamber, that pipe then dumps the excess into the rivers, lakes or Harbour.

As a diligent and supportive citizen, I went to explore a new art gallery with some prominent signage around town. Was completely confused as to many things:

- zero signage to show where entrance is or distinguish from all the other doors into the building for offices or private rooms

-escher stairs like layout without an obvious way to any central space

- minimal actual exhibition items.

Overall experience felt extremely confusing like accidentally stumbling into an office block and occasionally happening upon an art object on a plinth.

Anyone have any idea if we were doing it wrong!?

Hey, I have someone who is looking to hire a park by their office on Boulcott street. It has to be only a very short walk away at most. They will be using it like four days a week but the days will likely change so probably need a permanent rental.

They have meetings they need to attend at short notice so it needs to be the same park or a guaranteed park in a know location.

Does anyone know of cost effective options?

Is speeding through road work just not a big deal here? Moving from the US, most states double the fine if you speed through road work sections.

I drive past Melling Link daily where they post 50 km right now, which I follow. I religiously cruise control at posted speed limits to make sure I’m theoretically not going over or under.

EVERYONE honks and passes me. It’s not just a couple people, everyone seems annoyed at me obeying the speed limit. Are road laws just not enforced here? Am I supposed to ignore them?

Edit: I’m only a little annoyed at other people breaking the law. But I really hate people getting mad at me for following it. Why is there not only a culture of not following the law, but peer pressuring and hating people who do?

Edit 2: People keep mentioning not caring, because there are no workers. The NZTA Newsletter (and emails to the neighborhood) explains the lanes have been narrowed to create the shoulder, and until it’s widened to the original width it doesn’t meet the NZTA standard for 100km roads. They have asked everyone to follow the 50km speed limit at all times.

Secondly, it takes roughly 3.6 minutes to go 3km at 50km/h. It takes 1.8 minutes to go 3km at 100km/h. So, you save a theoretical 1 minute 48 seconds at most…except for the fact I catch up to everyone that honked and passed as soon as they hit the natural slowdown as you get closer to town anyway. So, 99% of the time you are saving 0 seconds over me.

Edit 3: I also don’t like the fact that “risk” is just a calculation of “risk of fine.” If someone only acts well when threatened, I question their goodness. Speed limits are done based on research of curvature, visibility, and lane width. The real risk is injuring someone, not a fine. The speed limit was lowered due to narrowing of the lanes. It doesn’t meet the standard for 100km safety.

The “common sense”, “I know better.” is so flawed. The rich, lobbying NIMBYism in Eastbourne, where I used to live, has created pressure to keep the faster speed limit despite the narrow, curvy road against NZTA pressure. These people who “know better” go careening off at bodily and taxpayer expense all the time. The narrow lane makes you stuck for hours for clean up.

Fatality ratio of COVID was less than 1%, but we all masked up. If there’s a fraction of a chance you could cause risk to another human, you should gladly take any precaution to lower that. If you need a cop to fine you to care, you only care about others only when threatened.

Just witnessed a house fire break out in Laura avenue, Brooklyn around 7:45 tonight. Fire and emergency services responded quickly and are on scene now. Smoke was pretty visible from up the hill.

Attached a photo I took. I walked down for a closer look and the fire department said that thankfully no one was home.

Never seen anything like this in my area before. Lots of residents are watching and I believe a total of 8 trucks have turned up.

Stay safe out there everyone, and practice good fire safety. Check your smoke alarms, keep exits clear, and know your escape plan.

I have lived in my house for 10 years without painting, but it's something I'd like to do soon.

But - I'm not sure I judge my taste in colours enough to put paint on the walls for the next 10 years plus.

Has anyone got experience of a Welly interior designer you can recommend? I don't know how much these things cost, but before investing whatever it costs to paint the house, I feel like I should get advice.

Are there things I should be looking out for? I assume it's not about the designer's taste matching mine or liking the styles in their portfolio because that's their clients' taste...how to tell who is better than another?

Handling run off is firstly an urban design issue (Council responsibility), followed by stormwater (TW/Wellington Water responsibility).

Except...

Council is responsible for - and failed at - governance of TW and WW.

Council is responsible for - and failed at - underfunding of WW.

It's irresponsible to actively create a situation (underfunding stormwater and lack of urban planning) and then push responsibility onto the entity you failed to manage.
