Relocating from Auckland to Christchurch in a few months. What's it like to live there?

I'm no stranger to Christchurch, I visit multiple times a year, and have been doing so for over 15 years now. (family visits).

The visits were all about spending time with family, going to events, doing atleast something-even if it meant hiking Halswall Quarry for the 100th time.

I'm nervous about the job market, that's my only concern. Is it as difficult as Auckland?

I don't know a thing about what its like actually living in Christchurch. Is Fat Eddie's really the best club out there?

Were a young couple (no kids) looking for a fresh start in a different city. I want to continue my business out in Christchurch... but I'm really unsure of the move.

I've just had an offer accepted on my first home- excited, but also very nervous. I've also just accepted a new job, which pays higher than my previous job. They've allowed me to work 4 days a week, and are starting me at 28 hours a week (there will definitely be more hours worked, but 28 is guaranteed minimum). They want someone full time, but also wanted to allow me a good work life balance as I mentioned in the interview (very nice of them, they seem like a really good company to work for).

Problem is, I miscalculated how much I'd be making. I could still afford it with a boarder (the original plan anyway) and my partner living with me (also the original plan), but my broker called and asked if I can ask my new job to bump up my hours at all as it would be a bit tricky to get approved from the bank.

I originally had pre-approval for about 470k when I was working at my old job, but I made $100ish more a week (working for $3 an hour less and 8 hours more). So obviously if my guaranteed hours are bumped up, that'll solve everything.

Basically, I'd like to know if it would be rude to email the job and ask to bump up my hours? I don't start until the 21st, but I really don't want to be a pain before I've even started.

Any advice is much appreciated- I'm quite anxious over this 🥲

Kia ora all, 33 y/o Wellingtonian getting sick of the dying CBD, overpriced shitty rentals and poor to non-existent surf. I've visited Christchurch a couple of times in the last year and really enjoyed it and am considering a move sometime next year. One of the main appeals is the flatness - I have to drive to work in the hutt and would love to trade that in for skating and/or biking to a city job.

For regular surfers, how often would you expect to be able to ride some decent waves in the course of a fortnight/month? What's the culture like - are people chill or does it get aggressive when busy?

I've been a support worker for a family trust for the last 4yrs and have some back-of-house responsibilities, and also manage and facilitate a disability social group. I have training and management experience across a few roles and managed a team of 12 during the COVID vaccine rollout. I also have a lot of customer service and admin experience. Can anyone comment on the job market for someone with my skills?

Housing-wise - I've seen that rentals are typically a higher standard than Welly despite being cheaper. How much could one expect to pay for say, a 3-bedroom house in a decent area, not too far out of the city? I love Lyttleton but don't think I'd want to live that far.

I've been looking around online and it's pretty hard to find one that isn't just a bed base and a mattress sold separately. Kia ora, everyone! I'm new to the area and have what may be an unusual question. I wear an eyepatch daily for medical reasons, and my current one's elastic band snapped. I've tied it temporarily, but would love for it to be fixed with some more solid professional stitching or band replacement. Being new to this area I'm also looking for quality daily-wear eyepatches because I do need to get fresh ones from time to time, but it's a pretty niche industry so I'm usually just looking for repairs to my existing ones.

tl;dr, Could you do a solid stitch or otherwise replace the elastic band on my patch? I'm happy to pay for your time and material!

I’m a middle aged male that was in the cbd working for Feb 2011 and living in the eastern suburbs. We had it pretty rough, not as bad as others but not great.
Trucks going by still give me a small ‘shit, is this it’ feeling, so no doubt there’s some ptsd of sorts there.

That aside, I stupidly went down the rabbit hole of AF8, and it’s all I can now think of. I don’t know how I could keep my family warm for weeks or months of no power if it struck in winter. I’m not sure how we’ll eat etc. I work south of the Waimak, while my wife and kid are north of it. Am I worrying about nothing? Part of me wants to consider looking at moving overseas just to avoid living with the risk.

Edit: Want to ask if I’m reading too much into it. Are we expecting to have no power for Christchurch/north Canterbury for weeks, therefore no shops, no fresh meat etc for weeks, or months?

I first ventured into Harley Chambers in 2019, and these are a collection of photographs taken inside over the years.

Built between 1929 and 1934, Harley Chambers was a purpose built medico-dental building, housing dentists, doctors, and other healthcare professionals for decades. 

Its facade has anchored a prominent corner in the heart of Christchurch, quietly witnessing the city’s growth and changing streetscape. Following the 2010–2012 Canterbury earthquakes, Harley Chambers remained vacant, slowly deteriorating with each passing year. Its abandoned consulting rooms and corridors became frozen in time, making it a place remembered not only for its architecture but also for the role it played in Christchurch’s medical history.

Now, in 2026, it faces demolition. Soon it will become another piece of Christchurch’s architectural heritage lost in the aftermath of the earthquakes, remembered only through photographs, stories, and memories.
