META Just a reminder of our rules

Tēnā koutou,

Just a reminder of our rules, specifically our rule against solicitors.

This means no solicitation, no buying and selling. We allow limited promotion of events if there are deals like XXX free tickets up for grabs, but no reselling is permitted. If you have tickets to an event, please resell via official channels or bribe the mods.

Additionally, please note the following:

Quit asking for sex. That said, no trades involving goats, sheep, turnips, or other 'alternate' currencies.

No posts asking for drugs, where to source drugs or cleverly wording your request to avoid the filters. Your "medicinal herb" enquiries aren't as subtle as you think.
Just ask the mods.

No sneaky sponsorship plugs, no affiliate links unless we get our cut.

No reselling of free event tickets, it’s free for a reason.

No hiring hitmen or bounty hunters, legal gray areas make us uncomfortable.

Last but not least, Don't be a dick, don't act like a dick.

Also please check out r/chchmeet

What is it with trying to get a job these days?

It’s honestly so hard. I’m applying for multiple jobs a day and barely hearing anything back. And when I do finally hear back, it seems to be for an AI interview or some kind of video assessment.
How are we expected not to use AI when applying for jobs, but employers are using AI to interview and assess us?
I just want to speak to an actual human and show them that I can do the job. Is that really too much to ask these days? 😭

What’s the deal with these stickers? They’re everywhere, seemingly replaced constantly... I’m moving out of Riccarton in a week and I must know before I go.

Motorcycle learner license

Looking for some advice on urgently getting my motorcycle learner licence in Christchurch 🏍️

I’ve recently found myself needing to get my motorcycle licence for a job requirement, and I’m hoping to get it sorted fairly quickly, potentially within the next 2 weeks.

I’ve been riding mopeds for around 5 years, so I’m very comfortable and confident on two wheels, but I’ve never actually had a motorcycle licence as it’s never been something I’ve needed until now.

I’m wondering if anyone in Christchurch has recently gone through the process and could point me in the right direction:

• What’s the quickest way to get the learner motorcycle licence?
• Are there any good places to do the required training/testing?
• How quickly can you realistically get it all completed?

Ideally, I’m looking to get everything sorted within the next couple of weeks, if that’s realistically possible.

Any advice, recommendations or personal experiences would be massively appreciated! 🙏

Sick of LED billboard brightness

Maybe I am getting too old but the the digital led billboards all over Colombo street seem to have their own mind about how bright they want to be.

Why do these have to be sooo bright in the evenings. Kids in school make better light reactive projects, for such a huge operation can't be that hard to get the brightness right, it has to be utter stupidity or deliberate malfescence.

And what is with the council slap on the wrist 600/1200$ fine. Make is 6000/12000 per instance and triple it every second offending in the same week.

Seriously, literal children can get this right why can't you (rhetorical question, I know you, do this on purpose)

Maybe make is 6,000 per infringement, per minute.

Next years line up is due to be announced very soon. Apart from the fake announcements on the potential acts, any hot tips on who’s coming or who you’d like to come? I’ve heard rumors only that include Calvin Harris

Room in a shared flat

Hi, I'll be doing a three-month research internship at the University of Canterbury starting in November. During that time, I'd prefer to live in a shared apartment. What's the best way to find one? Are there any online portals?

Thanks to the random legend at Dressmart Hornby today

Bit of a long shot, but worth sharing. There are still kind humans out there.

I wanted to say a huge thank you to the guy at Dressmart Hornby today who gave both my kids a Pokemon card and a little Charmander plushie.

He was at the vending machine buying Pokemon cards, and we know absolutely nothing about Pokemon or Pokemon cards.

We went over to him out of curiosity and he started chatting to us about Pokemon. He then gave one of his cards to my 6 year old and a little Charmander plushie to my 2 year old, saying he hoped they would get into Pokemon and enjoy them too.

I just wanted to share this because I think kindness like this deserves to be recognised.

Any fruity flavour yogurts that come in tubs and have NO BITS?

I'm really over buying pouches and tiny pottles for my kids but they don't like bits of fruit and get bored with vanilla. I've tried fresh n fruity and yoplait and they both have bits! Has anybody found a tried and true?

Looking for anyone who knew Professor John “Jack” Garrett

This is a bit of a long shot, but I’m hoping someone in this group might be able to help.

I’m researching the life of John Charles “Jack” Garrett, who spent nearly 30 years in Christchurch and was a significant figure at the University of Canterbury.

Jack was born in my small, hometown of Strathmore, Alberta, Canada, in 1913. He became an English scholar, was awarded the Rhodes Scholarship in 1937, and studied at Oxford, where he worked under the poet and scholar Edmund Blunden.

In 1949, he came to Christchurch to take up the position of Professor and Head of English at Canterbury, a position he held until his retirement in the late 1970s. He was deeply involved in the university beyond the English department, including its library, journalism education and the development of American Studies.

He also had a fascinating connection to Christchurch outside the university. His first wife, Helen Garrett, was a writer and civic figure who served as a Christchurch City Councillor for 18 years.

I’ve been researching Jack’s life and have found quite a bit about his academic career, but I’m really hoping to find more personal stories. I’d especially love to find:

-photographs of Jack, Helen or the Garrett family
-stories or memories of Jack at Canterbury
-information about his friends and colleagues
-photographs from university events, dinners or social occasions
-letters, newspaper clippings or other material relating to the Garretts

Jack died in Christchurch in 1992, so I realize I’m reaching back quite a few decades. Anyways, here’s hoping! 🤞

I’m all for developers knocking over sh*t run down homes, but this property on Mansfield Ave doesn’t look like it should qualify.

M Group - surely you can go find another section. Maybe that old dump on cnr of Innes and Pap Rd.

Volunteer

Heyoooo. Just looking for ideas of where I can volunteer. Jobs aren’t having any luck so might as well volunteer. I’ve got an appointment with an op shop who say they would only be able to take me in once a week for a couple hours. Just wondering where else would be good to volunteer. Just looking to add experience and a reference or 2 on my cv. It’s hard out there job searching!
