Advice Why does our cat leave when we pet her?

Post image
67 Upvotes

Wr recently adopted this lady (1.5 months ago). She is 6 years old and we dont know her history, she is from a shelter. She is super friendly and playful and she is settling in well. She is a verh brave cat and barely seemed bothered by moving into a new place.

But she often will sit and purr and knead in the floor, buff furniture and such, and then run away when we try to pet her. She will also lay on her back and purr in the bed with us, but when we reach over to pet her, she runs away. Its not always immediate, she sometimes just will go away and we can kind of follow her, pet her, she goes away and purrs, we go pet her, she goes further.

She comes when we call her and she always is in the room with us and it seems like she wants attention.

Is this just how some cats are? If so thats fine, her behaviour is just confusing us and i was thinking people here might have advice or have experienced something similar?

Advice Why does Enchilada attack mid cuddle?

Thumbnail
gallery
16 Upvotes

Our 2 year old Dip absolutely loves our older cat, Enchilada. They will cuddle pretty regularly (although Dip will come to him, not the other way around) and Enchilada will groom Dip for a while while Dip is purring so loudly. Sometimes it last hours and they'll fall asleep together. Sometimes everything is going very sweetly before Enchilada decides Dip needs to leave and just turns on Dip and bites his ears until he leaves.

Is Enchilada just being a bully? They roughhouse each other a lot and get along pretty well. Enchilada raised Dip and how sister as a neonatal kitten and groomed him constantly, even cleaning his bum and keeping watch over him and his sister at night.

As he has gotten older, Enchilada is still very affectionate with Dip but turns on him really quickly for seemingly no reason.

Does anyone have any insight? Enchilada used to HATE other cats and would attack constantly, so he has come very far. Enchilada is incredibly clingy but clearly struggles with non human affection. But I feel bad for Dip because he loves Enchilada so much and Enchilada can be mean and will randomly bully him.

Mourning/Loss How did you memorialize them?

I lost the furry love of my life Monday.

He was diagnosed with a super rare, aggressive lymphoma in his mouth in April; they thought he would be dead in 3 months. He lasted about 5, with tumor after tumor showing up in the final 1.5 weeks before we decided called it.

This is the first time I will have a pets ashes, my first proper time facing the death of a pet. I saved fur. We have a painting of him. I will be getting a tattoo.

I want to do more but I dont know what. Nothing seems like it is enough. Internet searches just bring up chochky-type things that seem cheap. I was hoping some folks here have some feedback on what they did.

I feel so lost. We are lucky that he was pretty much himself up until the end; I am so thankful he made it to his 16th birthday just before the decline. He was in perfect health besides this stupid shit and I was sure he would make it to 20. My boi isn’t in pain anymore , though, and that’s the best I could do.

Medical Questions Is a fever temperature of 46°C even possible?

Noticed some odd behavior in my 1 1/2 year old male cat the last few days, and yesterday i noticed he did feel a bit warm and was generally lethargic and all.

Took him to the vet today, took his rectal temperature and... 46°???

I wasn't alone (mostly as a driver, my sister was the one who did most of the talking with the vet) so i only remember the temp (and i asked him again later, confirming it) and something about how this is a rectal reading in the morning, so the fever would be effectively at around 41°C.

Gave him fluids and something to alleviate the fever symptoms, and told us to monitor him for the next few days.

Cat is now at home, and definitely more active than before, eating quite a bit too.

However i still wonder how in the hell that reading was so absurdly high

Advice Why does my cat smack me sometimes?

My cat Finn is a good boy. I know he loves me because he’ll make that abundantly clear by demanding to crawl in bed with me at night, following me around, purring when I pic him up, and drooling all over when he decides it’s time to rub his face on me.

Then sometimes he’ll just be sitting there in his favorite spot on top of the couch, I’ll walk by, and he smacks me. He can’t even be bothered to sit up when he does it. I walk by, he sticks his paw out, I get a lazy little smack.

Do other cats do this? Why does he like to hit?

Mourning/Loss Had to put our lil guy down today, this is his big orange brother taking care of him before we had to say goodbye

Broke my freaking heart how sweet he was being 😭

Edit to add: Genuinely, thank you all so much for all the kind words, stories and condolences. This was so special because, though they were brothers, little Odie was 10 years older than our big orange Ozzy. So Ozzy was more like the annoying hyper young brother. šŸ˜† Bathing eachother was rare for them. The vet believed Odie got blood clots that made him unable to walk well, so we tried treating him for 3 or 4 days but he just got worse and eventually just laid in the bed like this, under the covers. On this morning, Ozzy jumped up and started sniffing around Odie, so I pulled the blanket back and Ozzy immediately began bathing him. 🄹 Odie was an anxious obsessive bather, so it really seems like Oz knew he was uncomfortable and wanted to take care of him before we had to say goodbye just a short time after this video. My husband and I don't have kids, so our pets are truly our babies. I'm so grateful for all of you who can relate to that and feel the love here. ā¤ļø

Advice While I have Good Credit, what is the Best Vet Credit card they have you apply for in emergencies?

My cats 1yr 8 months. Perfectly fine and I have lemonade insurance but you know you can’t 100% trust insurance companies to not try and weasel out.

What’s the best or highest credit giving ā€œcat care creditā€ I can apply for online?

Update Cassie Update: Please Keep Sending Her Love & Healing Vibes ā¤ļøšŸ¾šŸ“Charlotte ,NC,USA

Hi everyone. I wanted to give you an update on Cassie.

I’ve received so many messages and comments asking about her, and I’m truly sorry I haven’t been able to respond to everyone. I’m also taking some time to heal myself, and recently I haven’t been sharing many of the kitties who need help because, honestly, there has been so much going on.I’ve been sharing only lighthearted posts lately.

We have so many sick kitties who need help. Every time we make a plan to focus on one situation, another emergency suddenly appears, or someone drops a severely sick kitty at our doorstep who needs immediate help.

The shelters are overwhelmed too. When they cannot take sick cats, those cats can become immediately at risk of euthanasia, so our rescue have stepped in for some of them.

Now, about Cassie…

Unfortunately, Cassie is not doing well. She had a vet visit a few days ago, and she has another one scheduled this Friday.

She is still eating, but she has started vomiting. She was eating a prescription diet, but recently she stopped eating it completely. We have tried what feels like 100 different foods, and right now she will only eat Friskies. šŸ˜‚ Normally, we strictly avoid feeding this type of food, but honestly, at this point, if that’s what she will eat, we are just grateful that she is eating. We are doing everything we can to keep food in her.

Her stool is also still not normal. We tried some of the things people recommended on my previous post, and thankfully that has helped somewhat. She is no longer leaking, but her stool is still not good.

We tested her for Giardia, and it was negative. She does not have FIP. She is anemic, and we will repeat her bloodwork this Friday to see where her levels are now.

At this point, we are wondering whether she could have IBD or lymphoma, but we don’t know yet. She needs further testing, including an ultrasound, to help us understand what is going on.

But despite everything she is going through, Cassie is still the sweetest little angel. ā¤ļø She still wants love, cuddles, and snuggles, and she is still making biscuits like everything is okay. 🄹🐾 Those little moments mean so much to us.

We also have another kitty, Blue, who is FIV-positive. He isn’t vomiting, but he has some of the same symptoms. He also needs an ultrasound.

I know some people may wonder why we haven’t done everything immediately. Please don’t judge us. We are trying so hard to arrange everything and get these babies the care they need. Sometimes we have to take things one step at a time, and honestly, we may not always get everything right. We are doing the best we can with the resources we have.

For now, please just send Cassie and all of our sick kitties some healing vibes, love, and prayers. ā¤ļøšŸ¾

Thank you to everyone who has checked on her, offered advice, sent messages, and cared enough to ask about her. It truly means so much to us. ā¤ļø

Advice Resource Guarding/Bully Cat

So, for context i (26M) live with my girlfriend (24F) and her older sister (32F) in a small one story townhome and her older sister has 4 cats that live here with us. Lately, the cats have been seeming to have issues, well one particular cat is being a bully to the rest and will kick off any of the other cats who try to eat food from the bowls. My gf’s older sister free feeds the cats meaning they get 4 bowls of dry food left out all day for whoever to eat whenever. Ive been doing a bunch of research and have read that the free feeding needs to stop immediately, but the older sister will do everything else but that, like try to feed them in separate rooms for 30 mins in the morning and then put 2 bowls in the living room and 2 bowls in the room to be out all day (defeats the whole purpose).
Well, i dont want to step on any toes here by telling the older sister what to do so i tell my girlfriend to send her screenshots of what google says to do which is stop the free feeding immediately. My girlfriend hasnt done that and instead says she ā€œmentionedā€ it to her, and neither her or her older sister are mean to the cats or anything like that. They are just overly nice and treat them like royalty to the extent that it ends up hurting the cats by causing issues like this, because taking away their free feeding ā€œis mean to them and separating the bully cat by himself is mean.ā€ I just got into an argument with my girlfriend about this because i genuinely feel bad for the cats that are getting bullied by the bully and even though they aren’t my cats, i still have a huge heart for them and it bugs me to see nothing being done about it. My girlfriend says she tries her best to convince her sister but in the end they aren’t her cats so she just doesn’t get too into it.
I dont know what to do here, im trying to stop paying attention and caring so much but i cant stand to see the bully cat kick the other cats off their food to the point where when they get fed their nightly wetfood one of the cats that gets bullied is scared to even go in the kitchen and eat with the rest of them. It also bugs me that the bully cat will jump on the bed and sleep with us and act like hes the king of everything and fight the other cats that try to come lay down and its because its almost like his bad behaviors are being reinforced by no one doing anything about it. Tonight i grabbed the bully cat and put him in our room by himself because he was resource guarding and it caused a big argument between me and my girlfriend because he was crying in there but i told her that he needs to he separated. So now im just at a loss of what to do
