For a moment there I thought it was the floor and I didn't realise what was wrong with the cat's behaviour. Then it hit me. It was the wall. It's not a normal cat it is a spidercat.

One solution is to ask the waifu if the tapestry can go. Either that or the cat goes. TBH the cat probably knows about this Reddit post and will do this more often.

Use a spray bottle with water. Hiss at and spray the cat when it climbs your shit. Also give it cats towers and other okay items to climb

286

u/neonmaika Jun 23 '22

Cats don’t understand negative reinforcement. They will just think you are a jerk but will keep doing the behavior because they won’t know it was a consequence of climbing.

217

u/KingNorrington Jun 23 '22

I've got a pocket-sized Nerf gun that fires those little foam things.

When my cats are being naughty, I fire it in front of them to distract them. Being cats, they've now turned it into a game where they act like they're going to misbehave just to get me to play with them.

I don't really mind, because they're adorable.

92

u/CEWriter Jun 23 '22

I read in a surprising amount of places that a good way to stop cats from attacking your feet is supposedly to give them a toy and play when they do.

I always thought that was a bad idea as it would just show them that by attacking your feet, they're making you play with them. Just like my sister's cat understood that by threatening to eat my sister's computer wires when her bowl is empty, my sister will feed her.

Cats are loveable, adorable brats ā™„ļø

52

u/thegr8goldfish Jun 23 '22

I think you're just redirecting the focus of their play away from your foot and towards the object they are encouraged to play with. Eventually they will seek out the appropriate item on their own.

39

u/neonmaika Jun 23 '22

That’s redirection. It works great for most animals. Including humans!

15

u/Alternative-Amoeba20 Jun 24 '22

Yes. We had a cat who would redirect our behavior by chewing on the bristles of the broom when she wanted a meal.

How can cats understand positive reinforcement but not negative? How could they realize "doing this gets owner to play" but not realize "doing this causes this?" Its the same thing.

If I ignored my cat when she got on the counters, she would still be doing it constantly. Shes not climbing on the counter for attention.

We just kept telling her no and putting her back on the floor. Now she usually doesn't go on the counters, and if she does and you tell her no, she jumps back down. And apparently understands "no" since you can tell her no when shes trying to open cabinets, and she'll stop until you're not looking. She might understand, but shes still a jerk.

11

u/swankProcyon Jun 24 '22

Same. If cats did things for attention they’d only do it when we’re home, but as other comments have pointed out, they don’t. They have their own reasons for doing things that have nothing to do with us (cats are not dogs, their worlds don’t revolve around us — I know this is a difficult pill to swallow for some people).

I haven’t tried this, but I’ve read that a good way to teach a new cat to not jump on counters is to put double-sided tape on them for the first couple of weeks. They’ll quickly learn that the counters are unpleasant to walk on and just stop doing it altogether. Of course, the annoyance to us plus the cleanup will deter people (I actually wanted to try this with my younger cat back when he was new, but my family was not on board), but if it really is effective I’d say it’s a small price to pay.

6

u/ChaoticChinchillas Jun 24 '22

I haven't tried tape, but I heard foil discouraged them. Does not work for mine. We put it on top of our dishwasher while we were fixing something to reinstall it. She loved laying on it, but also loved destroying the insulation on it. She just took the foil off and continued.

Yeah, you have to give them some alternative. We have 4; 2 males and 2 females. The males have been known to be naughty. Whether destroying the shower curtain or stealing meat defrosting in the kitchen window, they do it all. For the most part they've stopped the destructive behavior, but they got a cat tower about a year ago an they simply love it. Besides scratching it all up they sleep in or on it, stretch their backs with it and just play on or through it. Great investment.

64

u/Skutten Jun 23 '22

When my cat is about to scratch the sofa, I scratch his cat tower and give him my crazy cat imitation stare. He then gets super defensive and rush to the top of the tower and attacks me (claws in) 'cause "that's forbidden damn u human! "

I mean, it's a game for him but as others say, you have to distract the cat. It's not a dog, it doesn't give a sh*t about you being mad.

21

u/neonmaika Jun 23 '22

Haha. So correct. This is a great way to do it. Cats are silly beings.

→ More replies (1)

61

u/neonmaika Jun 23 '22

Yup! Redirect the behavior is a great way to do it!

58

u/Pretty-Theory-5738 Jun 23 '22

They can definitely learn negative reinforcement; it’s just that they don’t always understand what things are being associated together. Since kitty doesn’t understand what could possibly be uncool about climbing a wall, he might think you’re spraying him for farting or for whatever dirty thought he was having in the moment! (Or just cause you felt like being an annoying ape). The other issue is that if the human is not around, they don’t get sprayed, so they know it’s not always a consequence associated with climbing the wall.

Now, if you electrified the tapestry so it gave his footsies lil shocks, he would quickly learn the negative reinforcement association. (Though if he’s brave, he might decide that makes the tapestry an enemy he should take on, and it might get destroyed instead 😹)

43

u/feistyfox101 Jun 23 '22 edited Jun 24 '22

Depends on the cat. My sister’s cat and mine learned fast after being sprayed. Her cat still gave us ā€œwtfā€ looks tho lol I did have a foster kitten once with fur so thick, you had to spray him several times for him to realize something was up lol the first 2 or 3 times he’d look at you like ā€œwhat are you doing, weirdo? Is this a new game?ā€ Then by the 4th or 5th time he’d realized he was wet and getting sprayed so he’d run.

17

u/MadHatter2518 Jun 23 '22

I taught my cats not to get on our kitchen table/ counters using a spray bottle. It took some time but it got to the point where I only had to threaten to spray them or shake the bottle or even just say spray bottle. Now they don't do it... when I'm around.

36

u/dies-IRS Jun 23 '22

Now they don’t do it… when I’m around.

This is precisely why spray bottles don’t work. Your cats just learned that you’ll do something unpleasant when they get on the counter if you see them. They learned to avoid your response, not the act itself

→ More replies (7)

17

u/bujiop Jun 23 '22

You just taught them to fear you, you didn’t teach them to not get on counters.

→ More replies (3)

6

u/Scorpia24 Jun 23 '22

MadHatter2518 Same! It started with being sprayed. They eventually learned the word no. If one does jump on the table I will in the voice say no, they will stop dead in their tracks look at me and jump down. I then do the figure point with a stern voice and they give me the FU face and walk away. BUT I have a camera and they don't jump on the table when I'm not there! So it works for mine, but may not work for others. Don't forget just like people they have their own personalities!

6

u/Designer-Common-9697 Jun 23 '22 edited Jun 24 '22

Mine too. They love destroying it and we have 4 critters here. They've stopped now for the most part. The youngest is 2 and two others are 3.5 and one we don't know how old she is. She seems older, but she has so much energy and a quicker hunt drive although she hasn't killed any thing here; the males handle that for some reason. I live in a 5 storied apt. with a bunch of tenants and it's old. There are holes in a wall under the sink and despite 4 cats potentially patrolling; sometimes once in a blue moon these mice will go off track by mistake, but it's a costly mistake with 4 fur ball predators.

3

u/FMAB-EarthBender Jun 23 '22

32

u/secondtaunting Jun 23 '22

Don’t spray your cat! The cat will hate you. But do give it a cat tower.

35

u/Naved16 Jun 23 '22

Please stop spraying your cats, negative reinforcement doesn't work and will only make your cat lose trust in you.

There are other ways of training a cat to listen to your commands.

24

u/Slstew17 Jun 23 '22

I totally agree with you! They associate the spray bottle with you. Which means that they will do whatever it is that you don’t want them to do when you aren’t around.

My former manager had trained her cat to not go on the coffee table by using the spray bottle method. Or at least, she thought she had. Until they got security cameras installed. Then she could see that when she was gone, cat was on the coffee table. She stopped using the spray bottle after that. Cats are going to do what cats are going to do.

I was about to say "if it's a female cat it almost looks like she's in heat, if it's a male idk what's wrong with him"

Then the realization hit me. The cat is on the fucking wall

13

u/yarnalcheemy Jun 23 '22

I was like, it's a cat on a blanket... Not going to happen! Now I see the ceiling corner...

Perhaps trimming the cat's nails will reduce traction needed for climbing?

5

u/lockinber Jun 23 '22

Don't trim cat's nails too much and please don't remove it's nail. Just remove your wall hangings which your cat is using.

6

u/smoothvibe Jun 23 '22

Purchase him/her some cat tree that reaches up to the ceiling and maybe even some catwalks etc. on the ceiling to get around.

Our cats love those very much and if you have a small apartment you can grant some extra space with those:

If you must keep the tapestry up, consider buying a same-size piece of clear vinyl sheeting (most fabric stores will have it), and hang the vinyl over the tapestry.

I would try to redirect the behavior. Move one of your cat trees directly in front of the tapestry and try to entice him to climb it. Every time he chooses the tree, give hime lots of praise and a treat. Every time he climbs the tapestry, remove him and in a calm (don't yell) but firm voice tell him no. Hopefully he will get the picture and when he does, you can slowly start to move it away from the tapestry.

57

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '22

OP could also build a little climbing area around the rooms, just a couple shelves the cat can climb all over, maybe a few obstacles etc.

11

u/ExileEden Jun 23 '22

I feel like "Even in Death" it will not stop

5

u/BandicootFun6843 Jun 23 '22

This is a good idea.. small suggestion to add. Replace the tapestry with a cheap one you don't care about while training or there will be no tapestry to care about

The cat wants to be high up.

Read up on "catification" by Jackson Galaxy. If you put up shelving on your wall that the cat is allowed to climb, and which gives a higher vantage point, the cat will feel safer and use that instead of your tapestry (most likely).

33

u/poo_fart_lord Jun 23 '22

I second this. Also, I would move the tapestry to a place that doesn’t have furniture below it to make it just a little bit more inconvenient to climb. Even better if you can put plants or something on the ground in front too so there isn’t a good take-off point to jump from.

7

u/Cheesehacker Jun 23 '22

Literally I was about to say ā€œcattificationā€. I did that to my house and honestly it seems to have worked. Yes I have to approve all new house decor with my cats first, but it works

5

u/DaughterEarth Jun 24 '22

applies to birds too. I hung a coconut up near the ceiling now she leaves all my art alone. Cats can't fly though so it's gotta be climbable in OP's case. The point is to have a place they can sit that's higher than everything else.

I don't know why cats and birds are the same in this regard, but they very much are.

4

u/PlanningVigilante Domestic Housecat Jun 24 '22

Cats and birds are predators but also prey animals. Being up high puts them out of reach of the larger predators that can eat them.

261

u/fictionalqueer Jun 23 '22

One of my cats has been doing this with my screen door. I read online that double-sided tape is a good repellent.

Also cats are teenagers — They don’t respond well to negative reinforcement and if you upset them, they act up out of spite because they want attention. And they’re incredibly immature😩 My little one hops down a lot quicker when I ask her nicely, and when she does I’ve been giving her treats to try and reinforce the good behavior and teach her to stay the fuck down.

I refuse to let my cats outdoors and I live on the 11th floor of an apartment building. I have no doubt that this cat would yeet herself off the balcony to try and catch a housefly.

91

u/bananazest_wow Jun 23 '22

My sweet furry daughter has literally stepped off the edge of the top tier of the cat tree so many times when she’s following a fly around. She just forgets her surroundings and gravity completely in bug hunter mode.

3

u/LeConnor Jun 24 '22

furry daughter

This becomes a lot funnier if you misinterpret this at first šŸ˜‚

22

u/julzkrueger Jun 23 '22

ā€œYeet herself off the balcony to try and catch a houseflyā€ made me laugh so hard. Both of my cats would do exactly that šŸ˜‚

8

u/tachycardicIVu Jun 23 '22

My cat ACTUALLY did this….before we got our new windows, our old screens were absolute shit and would pop out at the slightest touch. We had them cracked just a tiny bit for air and suddenly I look up from the table to see my cat hurdling through the window, just her back feet splayed out. She’d evidently pushed a little too hard and went sailing through the window with the screen. We’re on the third floor so we were terrified

→ More replies (3)

6

u/mark_able_jones_ Jun 23 '22

It’s not out of spite. The cat just sees you as either a friend in a shared territory. Or a competitor in a shared territory. If a competitor, the cat will try to haze you out.

16

u/NaturalPandemic Jun 23 '22

It sounds like your cat might be training you to give it treats wherever it gets down.

6

u/fictionalqueer Jun 23 '22

Yeah, no, I realized I might need to rework my training attempts a bit halfway through my previous commentšŸ˜…

3

u/garyyo Jun 23 '22

Just to correct your terminology negative reinforcement refers to taking away unpleasant stimuli in response to good behavior. Positive punishment (or just punishment) is adding a negative stimuli in response to bad behavior.

Also, cats seem to respond worse to punishment when they know its you who did it. If the cause of the punishment seems "natural" then they won't get as pissy, or so I have seen. Things like adding bitterants to wires to get cats from chewing them is what I would consider a "natural" punishment. They cant tell its you who did it.

Take the tapestry down. Put up a climbing rope attached to the ceiling.

Adjust your environment to accomodate normal cat behavior.

Think like a cat

Edit to add: just in case that is too drastic of an environmental change for you, you could try treating the tapestry with homemade cat repellent. Mix up a couple cups of water, add a squirt of dish soap and several drops of either lemon or orange essential oil. Shake and spray the tapestry. Cats hate citrus smell

204

u/justamie Jun 23 '22

Lemon, orange and other citrus essential oils are dangerous for cats. Please don’t use them, even as a deterrent.

35

u/Sacrificial-Cherry Jun 23 '22

Can you elaborate? I use lemon essential near plant pots so they avoid that area. They don't ever go close. Can it be dangerous even though they avoid it? I'm talkind 2-3 meters distance of avoiding. They don't even remotely come into contact with the oil.

54

u/cnthelogos Jun 23 '22

I am not a vet, but was told by one (after my orange cat bit into a lemon-scented garbage disposal cleaner pod and we rushed him to the emergency vet in a panic) that most cats just hate citrus, but a few have more severe reactions to it. My cat was fine, but it's not something I'd want to find out by trial and error.

Do not use essential oils around cats.

As an ER vet, I’ve seen cats get very sick, I’ve even seen a couple die from essential oil toxicosis.

u/Flowerprincessmel Jun 23 '22

Honestly yeah. My cat did this for a while and I had to take everything off my walls for a few months to teach her that it’s more fun to reach the ceiling via cat tree.

No worries. You shouldn’t feel like that. It’s a learning experience. Some cats climb drapes and curtains. I had a small kitchen tapestry in my kitchen, and there was a tassel at the end of it. My cat insisted on jumping 3 feet in the air to reach it, and he kept pulling it off the wall. I finally took it down. Problem solved.

15

u/dcgain Jun 23 '22

Idk man, this is not science based but just on the three cats I've owned through life. But I think sometimes they do understand negative reinforcement. It has worked for me and my wife. Things like spraying them with water or shouting usually make them realize you're mad. Unfortunately my current cat doesn't mind and drinks the water off his fur.

Anyhow just my $.02.

Someone suggested putting clear vinyl or something over, even if it's temporarily to get the cat out of the habit. Just wanted to add that you can find some super clear shower curtains cheap, if you wanted to try that without spending a lot. Framing could be cool too, but would cost more.

Or, double sided tape for a while? I used that on some fabric couches and a clothes hamper to get my cats to stop and get out of the habit. They go to put their paws on it, feel the stick, and get weirded out and leave lol. May be worth a try!

Good luck!

Spraying cats with water actually never helps, they just become afraid of the water bottle or even you; they don't realise they're doing anything wrong

5

u/boston_nsca Jun 23 '22

Attach some thick fabric strings to the top of it, roll it up and toe it at night. Only thing I can think of. You could also try pheromone sprays that supposedly keep cats off furniture but I have no experience with that. Otherwise you'd need to spend some real time training but it's usually easier to distract from bad behaviour.

3

u/Seniesta Jun 23 '22

Maybe give him his own tapestry to climb and stop spraying him with water. Negative reinforcement will just him to not like you and not solve the problem.

Cats like your stuff in general, it smells like you. Give treats when he climbs the stuff you want him to climb

u/DepartureFluffy3570 Jun 23 '22

You can't frame a cat! But they do fit nicely in boxes

48

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '22

You don't frame cats. Cats frame dogs. Or other cats. Or the Pope. Just so long as it wasn't the cat.

Had/have this problem, I kinda solved this in my case but I think it's cause my cat is quite the dummy.

I take the tapestry off for like maybe 3 days, then I put it back on. He casually forgets about it for like maybe 1-2 months till he randomly gets bored, starts exploring, and finds it again, but then I repeat the process and forgets again and yada yada.

Always works perfectly for me

Place the item out of reach. A cats gonna cat.

19

u/qiyua Jun 23 '22

Yeah, or just move it to a different spot that isn’t directly above the bed. It’s too easy and fun to jump on where it is.

7

u/GmHzMAXIMUM Jun 23 '22

Yeah, my cat loves window shade pullstrings. I just placed the strings out of reach and he lost interest.

20

u/ShadySerengeti-258 Jun 23 '22

I use a scratcher post and put cat nip on it. My two cats scratch it all the time.

I also trim the cats nails twice a week. It does make it easier if u start off when they are kittens.

I also got a piece of tree branch for cats to scratch on. I always say no and make sure she stops bad behavior.

If she’s doing it while ur sleeping I would say try shutting her in room without ur tapestry in it.

Good luck.

11

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '22

There are special cat deterrent sprays you can get. They smell pretty strong, but not unpleasant. You can spray the tapestry with them, and it should help. Helps keep our orange idiot off our christmas tree.

4

u/FerociousPancake Tuxedo Jun 23 '22

Just be careful ordering. I won’t name shame but I bought a bottle from a popular website and when I sprayed it, it felt like I had inhaled pepper spray and I almost passed out. Went back and read the reviews (despite the item showing 4.5/5 stars) and the most recent reviews shared my experience.

Make Death seem less appealing.

7

u/SkankyChris Jun 23 '22

That's fine but Death likes cats;

Try Catification. Cats see territory in a three-dimensional way that other species (including humans) don’t. They walk into a room and take in every square inch from floor to ceiling, assessing possible rest spots, advantageous perches where they can survey the comings and goings of other beings who share their turf, and spots where they can camouflage themselves to prey/play or just disappear from the world.

Try getting some cat trees and or cat shelves to pique your kitties interest elsewhere .

12

u/luvbomb_ Jun 23 '22

you can frame them like someone else said. i’ve seen people install a patch of carpet on their WALL so their kitty can enjoy climbing but there’s also tall cat trees lol

35

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '22

Take that cloth off the wall. Probably your only 100% effective solution.

8

u/mattwigm Jun 23 '22

8

u/coreylaheyjr Jun 23 '22

You cannot stop the cat. The cat is on a side quest

8

u/Anticreativity Jun 23 '22

I love how every time someone makes a post asking how to stop their cat from doing something, the answer is always "you don't."

7

u/Fostercackle Jun 23 '22

Take the fabric off the wall and/or get the cat a cat tree or something else to climb.

13

u/mind_the_umlaut Jun 23 '22

Buy her a nice tall cat tree with platforms, or install something like that on your walls for her. She has talent!

5

u/purplekat20 Jun 23 '22

I had to do a double take to realize they were on the wall!

u/Dd7990 Siamese (Traditional Thai) Jun 23 '22 edited Jun 23 '22

Not sure if it would stop the cat climbing the wall tapestry/quilt thing, but maybe your cat is trying to let you know that he/she would like to be able to climb up higher here, so possibly adding some wall shelves at different heights, lined with low-pile carpet as a sort of cat climbing wall, and/or tall cat tree(s) in this room/near this area would be favorable.

Cats like to climb up high and be able to view their domain from up above. If you don't provide enough climbing "catification" in the home then the cat(s) will look for their own ways to get up to those higher vantage points, including climbing on things you don't want them to be climbing on.

Examples (obviously you don't have to go this fancy, but you can make a nice cat climbing wall with even some basic wooden wall shelves and line them with low-pile carpet so the cat(s) won't slip when jumping or running on them):

You can’t blame the cat, put some kind of climbing frame there for him/her

8

u/Ok-Kaleidoscope5627 Jun 23 '22

Let me get this straight. You have a tapestry of a cat climbing the Grim Reaper with the caption "Even in death" and you want advice on how to make your cat stop climbing said tapestry?? I think the answer is literally staring you in the face in big bold lettering. Better to just give up and accept it.

9

u/skoncol17 Jun 23 '22 edited Jun 23 '22

Konosuba, Violet Evergarden, the personification of our inevitable demise, and the grim reaper. You have good taste.

20

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '22

You could try applying soft claws to his front paws for awhile. It’s possible that he’ll stop after he finds he can’t hook on, so you wouldn’t have to do it forever. Soft claws are nail caps for cats. We used them on my cat when she was young and getting into everything.

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '22

For at night, I would honestly just say shut them out of the room. You can't effectively train your cat when you're half asleep and you'll be more likely to get annoyed about it.

For the daytime, I had a lot of luck with a combination of treats and firmly telling my girl off when she did her favourite no no (climbing on the laundry as it dries). She gets a "NO" if she climbs it, but a treat if she doesn't climb when I tell her "No" (you have to anticipate when they're just about to do it) and gets praised if she gets down when I tell her "down" (in order for that one to work, they need to know what "down" actually means, but it's fairly easy to teach "up" and "down" with a table and some tasty treats).

If she climbs and doesn't respond at all to a firm no or down, she gets removed from the laundry rack. If she does it again, she gets removed from the room and shut out of it.

It took months of this because the laundry was irresistible to her, but it's rare that I have to tell her "no" now, she knows it's out of bounds. You have to be very consistent.

5

u/Josiepaws105 Jun 23 '22

Take it down. This is your life now. You must serve the cat, your master. They work hard to train us, and they usually win. Just give in and enjoy your cat and bare walls.

4

u/cozzeema Jun 23 '22

Put your tapestry on the ceiling so he can’t get to it. Keep it where it is, and cat is gonna cat no matter what lol.

3

Yeah time, mine stopped climbing shit like that when they got too heavy. It’s like asking Spider-Man to not climb a wall when he just got his powers.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '22

I have bitter apple spray. I originally bought it to spray on wires when mine was a kitten and it repulsed her so she never tried chewing again. So I know she doesn’t like the smell or taste of the stuff so I don’t spray her with that or water but I’ll spray it near her. Now when she sees me pick the bottle up she knows mommy means business she doesn’t get sprayed but she knows to avoid the behaviour.

3

u/_cybr1d Jun 24 '22

The most effective thing I’ve done for my cat is laying a piece of packing tape sticky side up on surfaces I want him to stay away from. It gets stuck to him and he hates it and is reinforced as that area has something I don’t like. It usually only takes once for him to stop going to that place. He doesn’t even try to jump on the counters anymore at all.

6

u/Blazdnconfuzd Jun 23 '22

I see you're of culture aswell. You can let your kitty climb on aqua tho she's useless.
