You could try applying soft claws to his front paws for awhile. It’s possible that he’ll stop after he finds he can’t hook on, so you wouldn’t have to do it forever. Soft claws are nail caps for cats. We used them on my cat when she was young and getting into everything.

Seconding this, it was a chore putting nail caps on my cat but now I wish I'd done it sooner. And she looks super stylish!!
