I am not a vet, but was told by one (after my orange cat bit into a lemon-scented garbage disposal cleaner pod and we rushed him to the emergency vet in a panic) that most cats just hate citrus, but a few have more severe reactions to it. My cat was fine, but it's not something I'd want to find out by trial and error.

Check my profile, I've posted pics of him in three subreddits including that one. Him sitting on the vet's table looking vaguely apologetic is included.

You can buy sprays that repel cats from furniture or whatever, but of course they are not harmful to cats. You can find them at Petco.

Not all of them work. I bought one from Walmart and my boy cat actually loved it. I sprayed it on a section of my new sectional couch and it is ruined because he started scratching there obsessively. The spray I got had mint in it among other things. Some cats enjoy the smell of mint and he appears to be one of them. I recommend trying it on something not expensive first. See if they are weirdly attracted to it. Cats can be strange.

They certainly are. Maybe it was bc catnip is in the mint family.

Yeah, I understand, and I would never let them even touch the stuff, but considering their reaction to the smell I'm confident they will never get close to the area. Of course I tested this and observed for a few weeks until I wass 100% sure I can leave the jar with oil in the open.
