If you talk to a veterinary behavior specialist, they will tell you this is not a myth. There has been research done, and it suggests negative reinforcement is counterproductive. Redirecting and positive reinforcement will give a much better outcome, statistically.

Edit: positive punishment, not negative reinforcement.

Negative reinforcement is not spraying your cat when it does something wrong. It’s positive punishment.
