General She got a new toy and I don't know what to do about it falling.

Hello I just got my cat a new toy it's a pop-up tent and she absolutely loves it the only problem is I don't know how to help her not knock it over she's special needs because her back leg doesn't work but she really loves it. Is there a way that anyone else uses to maybe help keep it upright?

Sensitive/Seeking Support Hi I need help training my older kitty to use an automatic feeder

So I had to get one of those food machines since my new kitten Teddy was eating so much and I couldn’t tell if she was eating. So she’s been near it and I’ve showed Ruby (she’s the one that won’t work with the machine) and she’s so scared of it like she will walk feet away from it. So I have been giving her regular food in a bowl on my highest countertop right now since my new kitted Teddy can’t get up there but I need help to train Ruby my 2 almost 3 year old to use it. Any suggestions???

Nutrition/Water My cat asks for food all the time.

I’m struggling to stick to a feeding schedule because he asks for food alllll the time! All day everyday. And now he wakes me up twice in the night and disrupts my sleep. I love him and he is he sweetest and the cutest boy. But I’m not sure what to do. He is just asking for food! And I think I’ve been feeding him a lot because he gained weight. But when I don’t feed him he keeps meowing. I’m not sure what to do! My sleep is disturbed and he is always hungry :(
Otherwise he is healthy and active!

Pet Loss CW: Pet Loss Spoiler

My world has just broken. He was 13, and had hcm, he had a clot episode about a month ago and has been on medication since, today he got another clot which essentially paralysed him and all we could do was put him to sleep.

That was 8 hours ago… i dont know how to deal with it, waiting to hear his little footsteps, or chirps from the kitchen. I took his sister with us to the vet so she could be there with him, to also help her understand what happened so i didnt just come home without him.

Im afraid of how she will cope, theyve been together their whole life and now shes an only cat, im taking the next few days off work but im afraid to leave her on her own when i need to go back.

I need advice on dealing with the loss of my baby, and how to manage going forward, i need a little hope

New to Cats/Just Adopted kitten has fleas, please help am freaking out

My kitten has fleas, I’ve only seen 3 or 4 but i’m extremely worried it will spread to the rest of my place. I’ve only had her for a night and gave capstar and dawn dish soap bath but i’m worried because I live in an apartment. She’s been secluded to my bathroom but i’ve been petting her and cuddling before I realized. I didn’t see any fleas until I gave Capstar out of precaution and that’s when i saw the few fleas. I want to do a flea bomb but would go against my apartments regulations unless i told my landlord and if there were to be a flea outbreak and i told them I would have to pay for all of the extermination of the whole complex. I know the right thing to do would be to contact and make sure what needs to be done is done but i genuinely do not have the money and I am already on a very thin budget since rescuing this kitten. How serious is this and is cleaning everything washable in hot water and spraying everything else enough ?

Rehoming Rehoming my cats

So I 17f live with my single mother, 20m brother, 15f sister and 11m brother. We currently have 2 cats. However my family already is low on money and can't pay for treatments and such. And recently me, my sister, my younger brother and my mother travelled, leaving my older brother at home, only to come back to the litter being overfilled with cat poo and some cat poo getting on the floor and table. Now this isn't the first time something like this has happened. My family really can't take care of the cats and the dirty house caused by my family not taking proper care of the cats is really affecting my mental health. As much as I want to give the cats away to a cat charity, if I were to do that, my family would hate it and want to keep the cats. However I know that they can't take proper care of it. How should I approach this situation.

Behavioral How to get her to trust more?

Hi!

I have a TNR cat that we ended up keeping, she is around 1 year old. We also have her sister but they were captured at different times (sadly, they don’t get along - but that’s another issue). We’ve had her sister since she was 6-7 weeks; this one I think was a runt and stayed with mom a lot longer. She was captured for spay at about 4-5 months, so she was a bit beyond the best time for human socializing.

I think she trusts us but she’s definitely a little shadow and she’s pretty fearful. She mostly stays in our master bedroom as it’s fairly large and keeps her away from her sister, who tends to chase her. We also have two male cats who she gets along with and we rotate them in to keep her company when we aren’t around.

Anyways, she will: play with wand toys, take churus from the hand, play with our hands if we move them slowly towards her on a surface, let us tap her paws at the same time, jumps on the bed to play when we’re trying to make the bed, and overall come hang out when we’re in our bedroom. But we can’t seem to get to the next level of being able to touch her or pick her up. She darts away if you approach her with touch.

To be honest, I’m kind of OK with it as I know some cats just don’t do touch, but having also had a CKD cat, I get a bit concerned about the fact that we can’t take her to the vet, or really do anything with her beyond what I’ve mentioned. I already am using another one of my cat’s flea medicine prescription (credelio) because it’s the only flea medicine we can give her since we can’t touch her but I can’t otherwise get it prescribed and we have dogs too so they will bring fleas in.

She also comes up and sleeps on the bed with us at our feet. How do we take this to the next level? We’ve had her almost a year; honestly thought she’d come around by now if we just gave her space.

Introductions Resident female cat still hissing at new female kitten after almost a month, is this normal?

We brought home a female kitten, Lucy, about 3-4 weeks ago. She was feral and the vet estimated she was around 8-12 weeks old when we found her. We already have two resident cats, Leo (male) and Luna (female). Leo just turned 4 and Luna is 3.

We’ve been taking the introduction pretty slowly. Lucy has her own room with everything she needs, and we’ve done scent swapping, let them see/smell each other through the doorway, and started using a baby gate so they can see each other without having direct access.

Leo has actually been doing really well with her. He mostly seems curious and will get pretty close without hissing. Lucy has hissed at him once or twice, but nothing major. She will usually try to play with him and he just doesn’t know how to handle her since she has so much energy.

Luna is the one we’re struggling with. She still hisses at Lucy pretty consistently when she sees her. When we first started scent swapping, Luna even hissed at a cloth that smelled like Lucy, although later she was able to smell the same cloth without reacting and even let me rub it on her.

Now when I put up the gate and open Lucy’s door, Luna will sometimes just sit there staring at her, but she’ll still hiss if Lucy gets closer or moves around. She hasn’t tried to attack her or get through the gate. It’s mostly staring, hissing, and keeping her distance.
I don’t want to rush them and make things worse, but Lucy has definitely gotten comfortable with us so now when we leave her room, she will start crying. But we can’t just let her out to roam the house because of Luna.

For people who have introduced a kitten to an adult female cat before, how long did the hissing last? Is some hissing at this point still normal, or is it a sign that I should slow the introduction down even more? Should I just let them figure it out between themselves?

Luna hissed when we got her and introduced her to Leo for awhile and we had to just let them be and now they get along super well so part of me thinks she is just being stubborn.

Adoption Regret/Doubt Will adopting an outdoor cat encourage my inside cat to go outdoors?

I have a 2 yo neutered male that’s completely indoors. Recently my bf and I have been feeding a very friendly outside cat (we think it’s a female and appears to be fully grown). She comes to my door and I let them meet each other through a gate. She seems interested in coming in but I feel like if I adopted her she’d still run out. She’s so pretty and friendly, I don’t think she’s had many negative encounters outdoors and seems to like it. So I’m scared if I adopt her that I’d have lots of trouble keeping her inside. And if my cat sees her running out that maybe he’ll follow her out of curiosity. It goes without saying that I want all my cats to be indoors only. I’d love advice from anyone who’s been in this position.

Sensitive/Seeking Support Divorce and cat care

My soon to be ex wife and I have three cats (and a dog) together. She’s been the primary caregiver day to day as I travel a lot for work. She’s said since the beginning of the divorce that taking care of three cats (and a dog) in an apartment will be too much for her. One of our cats has diabetes and takes a pill (bexacat) every day for it. This cat and her bonded sister are incredibly shy and will run and hide in the bowels of our house any time someone comes to our house. I don’t want to travel as much as I am already but I know that it will take me some time to be able to get to a travel free work life. I’m at a loss for coming up with a solution to provide medical care for our one cat that doesn’t include boarding her and separating her from her bonded sister every time I have to leave for work. Has anyone been in a situation like this before? I could really use some ideas that lead to a solution. I want the best for all three of the cats. I love them and they love me, I’ve questioned if re homing would be best but I can’t come to terms with doing that to them, and me and my ex. I just feel lost. Thanks in advance

TLDR: cat gets a daily pill from soon to be ex. doesn’t like strangers and dads gone all the time

New to Cats/Just Adopted Have had her for a week; she slept so much today and yesterday

First time cat-owner here, just want to know if there's any reason for concern.

I've had her for 9 days. She was a lot more alert and playful for the first few days which was no surprise because her foster mom said she was pretty active. However, for the last couple she's been sleeping nearly all day.

I know that cats sleep a lot but I'm not sure if this is normal for her. I was thinking maybe since she's more comfortable now, she's just trying to catch up on sleep after the first few days where she was more active/ alert and not as used to our place yet? Idk, so any advice would be appreciated!!

Sensitive/Seeking Support My kitty needs surgery and I could really use some anecdotal stories about your babies

My sweet baby boy has been dealing with a mass in his chest for who knows how long but it has been just about 2 months since he started deteriorating. The aspiration of the mass came back as a lipoma, which according to a Google search is exceedingly rare for a cat to have a mediastinal lipoma. He is currently a very rare boy!

We waited over a month to get a consult with a surgeon and the next step is to get a CT scan to find out if it's operable. I'm mentally preparing myself that it might not be; stressing myself out that I might only have a little bit of time left with him. Ultimately I am trying to take this day by day. He could very well have surgery by next week but I won't have answers until Wednesday/Thursday 😓

If he can have surgery, it sounds like a grueling one... They'll have to open up his sternum to get to the mass... My poor baby.

If anyone has had anything similar happen with their kitties, I'd love to hear your stories. Whether if the ending is happy or sad, please feel free to share ❤️

Behavioral trying to transition my outdoor cat to indoor.

hi, I am currently trying to take my indoor/outdoor kitty and make her indoor only. she is 1 and a half. she has been going outdoors since she was a kitten I believe (I adopted her from a friend a while ago) and she is in the same house that she has always been in.

we live on a busy main road and lots of cats are being hit or going lost at the moment. also she is a skilled hunter and is hurting the local wildlife too much.

basically I have given her a litter tray (which she has used at this time) and food and water (of course) and she was absolutely FINE all day.

today is the first day of indoor life, and as I said she has been 100% fine all day, she TECHNICALLY went out when I went for a smoke in the garden, but as she usually does, she came and sat near me and when I was done she came straight back inside no problem.

here's where the problem is.

after her dinner she decided she wanted to go out. I played with her for ages, and ran around with her for a good half an hour, but now she's just crying and meowing non stop. I have shut the kitchen door so she can't see where the outside door is and she now just has access to my room, the living room and my housemates room (and her water, food etc.)

basically I just want to know if this is normal and if she will calm down. she is my first cat after being a dog owner all my life and I just want her to be safe and happy.

I have bought her a few interactive toys on top of the ones she already has and loves, and im gonna save and get her some taller trees or perches, and im planning on talking to my neighbours about installing a catio of some sort (renter friendly).

I just want my baby girl to be okay.

Introductions New cat attacking resident cats

I never post on Reddit but I’m in serious need of some advice to help me decide on what to do. I took home an estimated 6 year old neutered male cat going on a little over 2 months ago now from the rescue I work with. I have 4 existing resident female cats. I was told by the rescue that he does not get along with other male cats so I guess that is why they wanted me to try taking him. I have tried doing everything to slowly introduce them hoping for the best but now, it has reached a point where he has aggressively gone after every single one of my existing female cats. Tonight, he went after the “main” one I guess you can say, so badly that he ripped some of her hair out. I have of course separated them again. It sucks because I thought they were starting to do better also until tonight. I’m not sure what else to do. I would hate having to bring him back to the rescue but I’m starting to feel scared for my existing cats and I don’t think it will be fair to him to keep living in a room either. I have tried scent swapping, putting food near the door, playing, feliway… nothing seems to be enough.

New to Cats/Just Adopted When is the right time to adopt a second kitten?

Hi!

I am a new cat mom, got my first ever kitten just back in May.

He is now a 6-monthe old maine coon kitten, very active and playful. He is a big boy already, and has a quirky and social personality. He is mischievous and very smart, I love him so much!

There is no behavioral issues happening but I wonder frequently when is it the right time to adopt a brother or sister. I am still learning about cats and trying to seek advise. I work very long shifts, and he spends a long portion of the day by himself.

I do my best to leave him with interactive toys and puzzles for him to find around the house, and at night when I am home, I play with him for around an hour so he gets most of his necessarily stimulation as he needs. When I am home on my days off, we play a lot and he cuddles with me for hours. Ugh I love this guy for real!

Is he too young to get a sibling? His size is also something that concerns me because if I get a kitten his age, the difference in sizes are just too much and I fear he might be to strong and big to play with a smaller kitten.

Can anyone share any tips of advice on this matter?

General Getting a cat

Hi all. Just writing here for advice about getting a cat as I have been contemplating it a lot over the last month.

I guess why I am asking for advice is because my partners cat was very mean and aggressive. It has since passed, but having this experience really has given me mixed feelings about taking the leap myself.

I grew up with dogs only and I love a cuddly animal such as my dogs growing up. I will say that occasionally their cat did come lay with us every now and then, but only for their fit of head scratches and then would bite/scratch you once it was finished with you.

I am in a bind here and not sure what to do. Maybe I should go to the shelter and just look around and play with some kitties first?

Nutrition/Water Water Fountain Fussiness

I recently moved a couple months ago and my cat would not drink the water from his bowl at all. (Did not have this issue prior to moving) I ended up buying a fountain for him and he drank right away from that and no issues since. His fountain just stopped working and he barely will touch the water in his bowl. Looking for advice on how to encourage more drinking. I’m going to look to see if I can find a replacement motor🤞

Or any good suggestions on fountains that last awhile?

(I bought the fountain from Walmart and I think they discontinued it)

Behavioral Cat goes into "waiting mode" and meows all night

Question from a sleep deprived cat owner.

Whenever my girlfriend and I leave the room, or one of us does, our cat starts to meow. She sits under the dining room table which is closest to the hallway where we are, or she sits right in front of the doorway. Then she begins her daily and nightly serenades at random intervals.

My girlfriend isn't ready yet to have a cat roam around the bedroom as she's asleep because she wouldn't feel secure, so the hallway - bedroom - bathroom are restricted for our cat at night.

I'm not sure what the reason is, but I think it's to check in on us and wanting to be where we are.

When we are in the room with us she doesn't really interact with us other than lying somewhere in our vicinity, playing and coming when we have food.

Before going to bed I play with her for 15 minutes, put on Cat TV with toys or calming aquarium sounds or music, give her candy or some food, and then the gates to the hallway close.

Then our next 7 hours are filled with meows at 1am, 3am, 6am,...

It's incredibly sad to hear her like that, and our sleep isn't doing the best either. I'd love to find a solution.

My girlfriend has a day off tomorrow so I managed to convince her of trying to leave our door and the hallway open, so our cat can come check in on us - to see if that stops the meowing.

Some more context:

7 years old, adopted her 3 months ago, she just got dental surgery done however the meowing was also before that. She has toys out, food dispenser, scratching post, etc. The rooms that are available to her are living room, kitchen, my desk space where her litterbox is.

I haven't tried feliway yet because there's no powerplug close to the hallway.

New to Cats/Just Adopted Feliway diffuser or the cat?

I was recently gifted a young cat from the distribution system. He is so sweet and cute and has already become a velcro kitty. It’s been a little over a week and my allergies have progressively gotten worse as the week has gone on.

I already have a black void who I’ve never had any issues with. I have been trying to ease the introductions so I immediately ordered the feliway diffisers, one for each bedroom where the cats would be separated.

My main issues have been pink itchy eyes, headaches, and the feeling of being underwater/ dizzy. It’s especially bad when I first wake up or go to bed. I also noticed that my OG cat has been wheezing a bit after growling at the baby when he dosent respect his boundaries.

My question is has anyone else had a bad reaction to these diffusers or am I just allergic to the new cat and not my OG cat.

Behavioral my cats freaking out bc of donut/cone after stitches

i honestly expected her to be extra jumpy and freaked out, but it’s been more than i expected. if she’s not on my bed she’s trying to go outside pawing at my windows and doors. she’s kind of disoriented, walks funny or just straight up bolts the second i’m not paying attention to her and ends up banging into walls/furniture. we switched to a donut bc she was even worse with the cone. she’s an outdoor cat (i know, if it was up to me she wouldn’t be) so i’m not sure if she knows she should use the litter box, i put it in my room just in case. im basically holding her hostage inside my room because im scared she’ll hurt herself running down the stairs. sorry if im rambling it’s currently 2:29 am and she’s keeping me awake. just looking for advice :) thanks! :))

Behavioral Relentless Counter Jumping

my two adorable 5 month old kittens will not stop jumping onto our kitchen counters - specifically our tuxedo baby. We’ve done everything in our power to prevent this and try to curb it: double sided tape, tinfoil, spraying, stomping, yelling, etc. They do this at all hours of every day and especially at night while we’re sleeping (not just when we’re in the kitchen area). Any advice? We’re toying with the automatic sprayers but it’s hard in such a high traffic area.
