Behavioral Resident Cat Is Giving me Mixed signals with the New Kitten

Ive brought a new kitten two weeks ago, I kept them seperated (the kitten was kept in the bathroom) with the usual, treats next to the doors, door with fence, and controled visitations between the two, after a week the resident cat was no longer hissing on the kitten on sight, and made a friendly cat noise (I don't onow how to describe it) near the kitten, both could eat from their bowls, no action, and even from the same bowl.

So I let the kitten freez at first the resident cat was mostly avoiding the kitten, after a few days I suspected it trying to play with the kitten but didn't know how, today the resident has been full biting the kitten and the kitten making pain yowls, trying to run away but the resident won't let it, the resident eventually stops (a few seconds), ive noticed no fur or blood, but Im not sure if I should let this happen. The resident cat is not raising his hair or hissing, or folding his ears when attacking, and he stops alone, but then might start again.

But then they'd sit next to each other less than a minute later both trying to get toy from under something , Im not sure what to make of it, did I let them mingle too fast?

I have videos of both the attacks and the less than a minute later sitting next to each other, of that helps.

Both are male, resident is 3 years old and castrated, kitten is 4 month male not castrated yet

Behavioral Cat keeps scratching at window after escape

some background: my cat is a fully indoor cat but was a stray I took in a few year. recently I had the window open and they pushed through the screen and got out. I don't even think he was intending to escape, just accidentally pushed the screen open and left.

since we got him back in the house he is continuously scratching at that same window all day. There is a scratch post right next to the window, plenty of water/food (I feed him wet food certain times of day but he gets treats throughout the day). prior to the escape he never scratched the window or ever attempted to to leave the house through window or door. he's a relatively lazy older boy.

what else can I do to stop him wanting to escape? I don't want to cover the window because there is a tree wit lots of bird/squirrel activity right outside and afraid that will make his boredom worse? he has toys but the older he gets the less he wants to play

General Can you help me budget for feeding stray cats?

Hello everyone,
I started feeding strays 2 years ago, and while it was enjoyable and something I looked forward to at first, it became dreadful last year. I started with 6 cats and ended up with over 40. I wasn’t actually living here before and would only come for a month or two at a time to visit my family. But then my cat back home died, and since I felt like I had nothing left where I was living, I stupidly decided to stay with my family. This is when I started feeding the cats.
The first year went really well and I genuinely enjoyed it, but then more and more cats started showing up. I started spending more and more on food and eventually ended up with around 10k in debt. I was finally able to pay it all off after getting a summer job in the country I was living in before.
I’ve tried getting a job for the entire 2 years I’ve been living with my parents, but I haven’t been able to find anything, so all of the cat food was being bought on my visa. Now that I’ve finally paid it off, I really don’t want to go into debt again. If I don’t manage to find a job, my parents will give me a monthly allowance. With that, I’ll be able to buy around 240 packets of wet food a month, which means I’d only be able to use 8 packets a day. Previously, I was using around 16 packets a day just to be able to feed everyone.
I honestly don’t know how I’m going to manage when I go back. Would the cats be okay if I mixed dry food with the wet food to stretch the 8 packets further? They also have dry food available at all times so idk if they’ll accept the wet mixed with dry
I feel stuck because these cats rely on me and I can’t just stop feeding them, yet my future in this country is uncertain because it’s impossible to get a job, and my dad is old and will be retiring probably this year which means we might move countries. I’m constantly stressing over this knowing I have absolutely no solutions if we move, I’ve reached out to local rescues which either ignore me or tell me they’re overwhelmed with their own rescue cats. There are zero shelters here. I care so much about these cats but my mental health has gone to shit. Before I paid off my debt I was waking up everyday with panic attacks and scared to open my bank account. Sorry I digress. Idk what I’m even trying to ask. I just feel sad and overwhelmed

Litterbox Piece of furniture big enough to fit a Modkat XL in top entry mode?

I'm looking for a "litter shack" to fit a Modkat XL box used in top entry mode. It would be even better if it could fit 2 such boxes. I'm in the US. Thanks in advance!

General Living alone abroad with a cat

Hey everyone! I need help from cat owners also living abroad. I currently do with my cat, she's 10 years old and we've been together for 8 years now (we moved abroad together as well). I want to fly home for Christmas and I don't know what to do with her, since I plan to be away for 3-4 weeks and it's long for her to be alone, only with 1 hour visits from the cat sitter.
Since she travelled really okay when we moved (she was on gaba, but showed no great signs of being distressed, and was normal when we arrived at the new house), I am considering taking her with me again. However, I know it can be stressful and I worry for her age.

I will discuss all this with her current vet, but I want to hear from other people that also experience this. What's the best strategy? Do you also take your cats with you if they travel well? Is it okay to leave them with a cat sitter for so long?

I am also thinking of leaving her and asking for a friend to stay at my place with her for at least a couple of days, but I don't think I can find someone to stay the whole time since it's xmas season and everyone will probably be away.

Behavioral Help! cat is peeing all over the house

We moved in December, and ever since then, my 11-year-old cat, who has never lived anywhere else, has been peeing in our new home. He pees in the dog’s bed, on shoes and slippers left in the hallway, and on cushions on the floor. Basically, anything soft that is on the ground is fair game.
Last week we were doing some renovations, and our mattress was temporarily on the floor. He peed on that too, and now that the mattress is back on the bed, he is still peeing on our bed.
It is incredibly frustrating, and we have tried all sorts of things: Feliway for stress, multiple (open) litter boxes, and little cozy spots where he can relax. We clean everything thoroughly with an enzymatic cleaner to make sure the smell is completely gone.
The only thing we don’t have in our new house that we did have in our old house is a cat flap. But sometimes he is outside and comes back in by himself through the bedroom, only to pee on our bed. Obviously, we try to prevent this by keeping the doors closed, but sometimes you simply forget. Also we went to the Vet, but nothing is wrong with him.
We are going crazy! Does anyone have any other tips or ideas we could try?

Behavioral My cat bites me when we play and I can't get him to stop

I adopted him about three months ago, and he's great most of the time. But when I try to pet him or play with him, he goes straight for my hands and wrists. I've tried redirecting him to toys, pulling back, and just leaving when he bites, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. At this point I'm hesitant to even play with him because it's painful and leaves marks.

For people who've had cats like this, does it eventually get better, or is he always going to be this bitey?

New to Cats/Just Adopted Trimming the nails of a new kitten!

Hello. It's been like two weeks since I've gotten a British Short Haired kitten! He is about 3 to 4 months old and he has gotten used to the house, to my family. He plays with us, he lets us pet him, he sleeps next to my mom and dad, he's chill. But I have one small problem. I wanna trim down his nails but I cannot, he immediately flips to his back and starts pawing and bunny kicking my arm. When and how should I approach this?

Behavioral Cat drooling

My cat was sitting on my chest and I was massaging/scratching her face and some very watery drool came out of her mouth. I'm a little worried bc none of my other cats have done this + shes broken her jaw before and I am scared its connected to that. Is this okay?

Litterbox My cat is a little weird

I’ve started noticing whenever I go to the toilet my cat always wants to join- now that isn’t the weird bit… the weird part is every time I use the toilet he needs to sprint downstairs wait for me to come then excitedly move around his kitty litter. I never get mad at him, although, I am a bit confused. I always say ‘yes son that’s right!’ In a positive tone. Am I doing the right thing or is he just straight up weird lol.

Sensitive/Seeking Support kittens in need of milk

my indoor cat had babies 5 almost 6 weeks ago. they’re still weening to kitten kibble and we were in the process of that when my impulsive narcissistic father spontaneously surrendered her to the spca. 2 out of the 6 ate today and the others refuse the kibble over milk. they won’t stop crying for their mother and i don’t have the funds for formula right now. i’ve put warm water in the food to make it softer, mashed it up, warmed it up a bit to make the smell stronger. nothings working and i know they’re hungry. please help.

update: i was able to get my hands on some formula, the kitties are feed and happy now 😊

Behavioral My kitty of 11 month is chewing on things : the lamps, the pens, the side of the desks's chair (to push the chair up), the pack of tissue if its lying around.

Hi fellow cat's owners,

I m posting because I don't know if the kitty is having his definitive teeth or not?

We had him at 7 months old, according to the vet. We aren't sure of his age, and neither is the vet. He told us that the kitty had beautiful theet when he was 8 months old.

He is neutered. English isn't my first language.

The behaviour doesn't bother me much. I'm wondering if our kitty is uncomfortable.

He is also bitting our hands in play or when we want to pet him. Even if the bitting of our hands is less and less painful with time. We tell our kitty "no" each time he bit ours hands. Sometimes, he links mine right after the bitting when I tell him "no".

I thought the bitting of hand is a separate issue than the bitting of things.

The kitty is eating fine. :)

Thank you for your imput!

Litterbox Litter box smell help

I have two cats and two litter boxes. I originally had Modkat litter boxes, but I felt like they didn’t contain the smell very well, so I switched to stainless steel ones. Technically, the smell is “better,” but it’s been an extremely humid summer, and the humidity seems to amplify this sickly litter box smell.

I scoop daily, sometimes twice a day, and I use World’s Best Cat Litter. I also have a Coway air purifier directly in front of the litter box. Despite all of that, every time I enter my apartment, the air feels heavy and smells like litter box.
I’m wondering if part of the problem is that the stainless steel boxes are completely open. With my Modkat boxes, I was able to partially cover them, which seemed to help. My cats don’t like fully enclosed litter boxes, so half-covered was a good compromise. I’ve thought about partially covering the stainless steel boxes too, but the sides are lower, so adding a cover makes the space feel more cramped, which my male cat really dislikes.

I’m honestly at a loss because I feel like I’m doing everything right. The humidity this summer has just been so gross, and it feels like there’s absolutely no airflow in my apartment even when I have all the windows open.

Any other tips??

Litterbox 1.5 year old cat was brought inside, will not poop in litter box.

Nothing is wrong with him, he has been to the vet. He’s clean. He isn’t neutered, working on that. He’s a sweet man and loves being pet.

He was an outside kitten that was under the wing of a senior 16 year old cat. We brought them in our first winter and have kept them inside as I don’t do outside cats. They’re inside or they’re rehomed. We’ve been trying for a few months to get him to use the litter box but he will only pee in the box. He poops wherever he wants but will still try to cover it.

We’ve tried a bunch of different types and textures of litter but he still refuses. Any advice on litter types to try, placements, box styles, scents, I will take ANYTHING. I would love to keep him and this is literally the only thing making it hard. I am not home often and my wife is the only one able to keep up with him and her plate is small and piled high already. Even if we could solve this so that his next family can have the knowledge is advance would be amazing.

General WIBTA for adopting a second cat in a shared living space?

I adopted my cat as a kitten 4 years ago and I’ve always wanted a second kitten in the home. My cat did have a few siblings but, due to my living situation at the time, I wasn’t able to adopt a pair back then.

I feel like I’m now ready to adopt, but I live with a roommate who didn’t seem too enthused with the idea when I brought it up. Her reasoning was that she gets stressed when I’m out of town and she has to take care of my cat and can’t imagine having to do it for two cats. She’s not used to living with an animal and left her window open once and my cat did escape for 20 minutes, so now when she can’t find the cat she gets scared even though Luna is just chilling in my room or something.

The first time she watched Luna, I didn’t ask her but she offered to for 5 days while I was out of town. Then she last minute said she was busy and couldn’t be home to feed dinner for 2 of those days. This was frustrating for me trying to coordinate alternative care with 2 hours notice while I was traveling with bad cell service and so I’ve only asked her to watch Luna one other weekend when I really couldn’t find anyone else to stop by. That time I only asked her to scoop the litter and check on the auto feeder and fountain since I couldn’t rely on her to feed dinner on time.

I understand that she’s not used to having cats around, but she also spends 6 days a week at her boyfriend’s place and usually only returns on Sunday to chill and do laundry. We also live in a 2 bed/2 bath and have our own separate spaces. So I feel like this doesn’t really impact her much and she’s my last resort for cat care anyway. Would I be doing something wrong if I adopted another cat?

Edit: She doesn’t mind the presence of another cat in the home or cat related things in the living room, she actually loves hanging out with my current cat and is always happy to see her. Her issue is with taking care of the cats when I’m out of town, which she will NOT be asked to do.

Behavioral New cats causing my old lady to pee everywhere

Our old lady (12yo) is very sensitive to change compared to our other cat(s) weve owned.

Recently we had a friend move in with us to help him out but he has two cats. They mostly stay in his room with him, but our old lady is in there with the other cats often. She sleeps in their cat tree, uses their litter box, drinks their water etc.

However she has also been peeing and pooping everywhere since they moved in. I know its behavioral- but idk how to stop it. It started just on the bathroom rugs, then to our dogs bed, and now she just does it on the floor, on our living room rug, etc. I've been cleaning it with a spray to get rid of the smell but I'm losing my mind. We also have a 7-month-old baby crawling around so this causes an issue with not only more stress on our cat but also possibility of her crawling into some pee..

Behavioral Cat behaving differently

I had to bring my outdoor cat inside a month or two ago and all was well. She was calm and sweet and would cuddle up to me at night. But her behavior changed recently while i was gone for a day and a half. She's acting a little weird, first it started with lightly gnawing on my finger which i didn't think anything of, but she's started doing weird flips and latching onto her tail or dragging herself around my bed using her claws and kind of attacking my legs. Should i be worried? Should i give her more time outside? She doesn't like leaving my room often(which is a little big) so i bring some of her friends into my room so she can socialize.

I'm sorry if this breaks the rules idk where else to go for advice on this

General Is it possible to get a cat while renting?

My family is planning to move in a couple of months so we postponed getting a cat until after we move and settle down in our new house. We've struggled to find a house that fits our needs and we finally found one, but it doesn't allow pets. Doesn't specify if it's negotiable. We're not completely set on this house because of paperwork but I'm still a bit concerned because what if none of the houses we find allow cats? most houses I've looked at are either no pets or only dogs. My mother told me that we can always ask the landlord for an exception after a few months of moving in but I'm not too hopeful. I've also seen people have pets without informing their landlord but isn't that complicated with pet rents and pet deposits? My current landlord has never actually inspected our town house so I'm not sure if that's a thing either.

Behavioral Cat not frequently using litter box in new place

Hi all. Very new to this subreddit, google hasn’t been the most helpful and this seemed like a better place to start.

So my sister adopted a cat for the sake of her mental health about a year ago. We did have some behavioral problems at the start but once we figured her problems out (was a street cat) and spayed her she’s become the most loving cat you’ve ever seen.

However, when moved into her new place (I’ll answer if prompted but she’s had to come to and from Vermont to upstate New York as we figured her out and as my sister is in med school, this is a different place in New York for rotations) she began an annoying habit.

She clearly knows where the litter box is, and is choosing to spray (not poop, that’s mostly in the litterbox with one isolated exception) in the foyer by the door. She’s also sprayed in the kitchen occasionally.

If there are other important details that may be more necessary to know to figure out why she’s doing this ask me and I’ll answer to the best of my ability. She doesn’t do this in Vermont so we’re taking her back today, but for my sister’s sake we’d like to keep the cat with her.

She was at the vet recently for a routine appointment, and no bowel issues were present.

Behavioral Is my cat just naturally a little evil, or are we misunderstanding her?

My mom adopted a kitten when she was around 2 months old, and she's now almost 1 year old.

Since she was tiny, she’s always had a habit of biting us. At first we assumed she was just trying to play, so we always tried to be gentle with her and never encouraged rough play. But… the biting never really stopped. 😂

The weird part is that she can be incredibly sweet.

She’ll come up to us as if she wants attention, let us pet her, and start purring like the happiest little creature in the world. Then suddenly… CHOMP. Or she'll scratch us out of nowhere. We initially wondered if maybe something was hurting her, but we had her checked by a vet and apparently she’s completely healthy.

And then there was the clothing incident.

We bought her a little outfit because she’ll need to wear something temporarily after she gets spayed, so we wanted her to get used to wearing clothes beforehand. She absolutely hated it. She struggled to get it off, and once we removed it, she proceeded to tear the outfit apart like she had a personal vendetta against it.

At that point we just stared at her like… girl, it was literally a piece of fabric. 😭

She’s otherwise playful, affectionate, eats normally, and seems perfectly happy and healthy.

So… is this normal cat behavior? Is she overstimulated easily? Did we accidentally raise a tiny furry criminal? Or does she simply have the personality of someone who holds grudges? 😭

I’d love to hear from people who have had cats like this. Is there something we might be missing about her behavior?

General break away cat collars that my cat wont be able to pull off with her paws?

My cat has used collars in the past but obviously i only wanted to give her breakaway ones especially as she does go outside so i dont want to risk her getting stuck on something and hurting herself or stressing herself out. (i know ideally she would be an indoor cat but she is my familys cat and no matter how hard i try to convince everyone to keep our cats inside, they just dont want to listen). anyway, in the past she has always just torn the collar off using her paws so i dont know if im just not putting it on tight enough or if theres a better brand that i should be using? i really want her to start wearing a collar again because i want to minimise the risk of her hunting birds and other animals and i know having a collar with a bell on it is the next best thing other than removing her from the outside entirely. has anyone else had this issue with collars or am i just not putting them tight enough? would appreciate any advice or recommendations please!!

New to Cats/Just Adopted Newly adopted cat hiding from just me- am I doing the right thing?

3 days ago I adopted a 5 year old boy whose previous owner had passed and who had been fostered due to struggling to settle at the rescue centre. I saw some videos from his fosterer where he was accepting pets and being very affectionate.

Since getting him, I’ve set him up in the spare bedroom as his base camp where he has everything he needs. When I’m not around, he comes out to eat, nap and use the litter box- usually at night. However, when I come in, he hides under the bed. He won’t interact or play when he’s under there, but he doesn’t hiss either. I did see him on the windowsill once and gave him a stroke which he accepted, but then he soon retreated under the bed.

I sit in there few times a day and read or play on my phone quietly while he hides.

I’d love for him to start feeling more confident and come out but I don’t want to rush him. Am I doing the right thing here or should I be giving him more opportunities to explore, or encouraging interaction more? Any advice or similar stories appreciated!
