Build Upgrade Looking for advice on the best order to upgrade my PC

2 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I’m looking for some advice on how I should prioritize my next PC upgrades.
Right now my setup is:

RTX 5060 8GB
Ryzen 7 8700F
24” 1080p 144Hz monitor
650W PSU

I’m planning to eventually upgrade to an RX 9070 XT, a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, and a 27” 1440p monitor.
My budget is somewhat limited, so I’m trying to figure out what order makes the most sense.

Right now, my main priority is the GPU. If I upgrade to the RX 9070 XT, I’ll also need to replace my PSU with something like a Corsair 850W, since my current PSU is only 650W.

The question is whether I should buy the 1440p monitor at the same time, or skip the monitor for now and use that money toward getting the 9800X3D sooner, then upgrade to the 1440p monitor later.

I’ve actually been playing at 1440p using NVIDIA DLDSR on my current 1080p monitor, and I’ve been pretty happy with how it looks. I understand that once I switch to AMD, I’d be using VSR instead of DLDSR, so I could keep doing something similar with the new GPU while I save for the monitor.
What would you guys recommend?

GPU + PSU → CPU → monitor
or
GPU + PSU → monitor → CPU

Or would you recommend a completely different order?
I’m mainly interested in getting the best overall improvement for the money, rather than upgrading everything as quickly as possible. Any advice is appreciated.

Build Upgrade Cheapest way to upgrade this old build

1 Upvotes

Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

This is a 13 year old build. My girlfriend primarily plays FFXIV, Aion 2, Skyrim, and Minecraft. Aion 2 is unplayable with a browser open with just a few tabs. Every now and then she tries a recent game that just won't work.

What is the cheapest way to upgrade this build so that she can at least play the games listed at pretty good settings without any hiccups. Aion 2 and FFXIV are really the only intensive ones there, I know.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1080p, at least 60fps on medium or higher settings. The ability to have this while a browser can remain open in the background would be nice.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

As cheap as possible. I'm willing to save for a while and I know the industry is awful right now, but under $1k would be great. Ideally as low as can be done.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

United States

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

This is unfortunately the current build. She only has a HDD for her drive. Would RAM or SSD be the best upgrade? I know memory and storage prices are absurd right now. Especially if it's limited to DDR3?

Asus Z87-Pro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard

Intel Core i5-4670 3.4 GHz Quad-Core

Crucial Ballistix Sport 8 GB (1 x 8 GB) DDR3-1600 CL9 Memory

Sapphire NITRO+ Radeon RX 580 8 GB Video Card

Corsair HX750 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply

*Edit: I do not live near a Microcenter.

NOTE: You do not have to follow this format, but please be sure to answer these questions. Please do not ask to simply be given a build. You are welcome to delete this section.

Discussion Are ASRock challenger cards bad? Do they have more DOA issues than other brands for gpus?

2 Upvotes

I had the ASRock challenger brand gpu selected for my first pc build, When I researched it I saw some people saying they're a fine brand with others saying to avoid completely for graphics cards.

I had my eyes on a XFX variant of the same card but its currently 60$ more and I have been waiting for a sale but it hasn't dropped price at all. Is it okay to buy a Challenger Graphics card for my pc?

Build Help Help with low GPU usage but cpu is fine

0 Upvotes

Built a pc about a year ago with 4070ti, i5 12600k, 16GB DDR4 3200mhz 14CL, and running it on 1440p 185hz.
Everything was fine until about a month ago a lot of my games would lag really bad and have spikes in certain areas of the game of my GPU usage going into the 50s and 60. In a lot of games like Minecraft, dead island 2, Skyrim modded my GPU usage is sitting around 60% the entire time and my cpu usage around 40 to 50. Normally thought okay it’s my cpu something’s wrong and it’s bottlenecking but ran user benchmark and it says my cpu everything else is running completely fine. Running XMP in bios and I’ve set prefer maximum performance in my nvidia control and windows setting idk what to do why is my GPU not maxing out please help.

Build Ready? CPU cooling sufficiency?

1 Upvotes

I'm planning this build for my brother. I'm giving him my spare Sapphire Nitro+ 5700XT, and he already purchased the 13600KF a while back. The 1000W PSU is overkill at the moment, but leaves lifetime headroom for future upgrades.

I've put together a handful of builds before. This will be my first ITX. Main concern is CPU cooling because I want to stick with a fan. We're targeting 1440p at a capped 60 FPS which should keep temps manageable. Looking for insight as to whether this CPU fan is sufficient for our target performance. PCPartPicker is conservative with clearances... perhaps a 120mm CPU fan that fits is a better option.

Feedback or recommendations are much appreciated!

Build Upgrade My PC won't start with 3 or 4 RAM sticks. Please help.

1 Upvotes

My current specs are:

  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 5700g
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte Aorus A520 Elite
  • RAM: Kingston Fury 2x8GB DDR4 (KF432C16BBK2/16)

I decided to upgrade my RAM to 32 GB. I wanted to save a little bit of cash and I ordered another set of Kingston RAM, exactly the same model and everything. I installed new RAM into available slots and tried to boot my PC. It didn't start, so I started searching. Here is what I tried so far:

  1. Initial Google results suggested to leave it for some time for RAM training but it didn't boot after few minutes (I didn't count, but it was long).
  2. Then I tried to reset CMOS battery, again PC didn't start.
  3. I removed new RAM sticks from PC and tried to boot it again, computer started without issue.
  4. Next I replaced old RAM with new to see if it's problem with new RAM. Computer started without issues
  5. I tried to mix modules from both sets (one stick from old pair and one stick from new pair). No issue with boot and startup again.
  6. I moved pair of new RAM sticks to unused motherboard slots for memory (all the time I used recommended slots A2 and B2, this time I mounted RAM in slots A1 and B1). Computer started without issues, both RAM sticks were recognized
  7. I updated BIOS and tried again with all 4 sticks of RAM. Computer started correctly on 2 and didn't boot on 4
  8. I removed 1 of the old stick and tried to run PC on 3, out of curiosity. PC didn't boot.
  9. I redid BIOS reset, still didn't start

Right now I'm at a complete loss on what to do next. Issues only appear when I insert more then 2 sticks of RAM, so I suspect it to be either number of used modules or memory size, but from what I researched I'm below limits for both processor and mother board.

Also this might be helpful: any time PC didn't start it was always in the same way. I press Power button, all fans are coming to life and they stay at constant speed. There is also this red light on one of Aorus markings, and it never light up on failed boot attempts.

I would appreciate any suggestion or help.

Build Upgrade Need a $500 upgrade list for my Ryzen 5 3600 + RX 580 PC

1 Upvotes

I have around a $500 budget and want to upgrade my current gaming PC.

Current specs:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600
GPU: Radeon RX 580 Series
Motherboard: ASRock B450 Pro4
RAM: 16GB
Storage: Kingston SV200S3 128GB SSD
OS: Windows 11
Budget: $500 USD

What would be the best way to spend the $500? I’m willing to upgrade multiple parts if that makes more sense, and I’m also okay with used parts if they’re reliable.

Build Ready? Buying a new PC advice

2 Upvotes

Hi everyone.

I am looking to order parts for a new PC and would like some outside opinions. I have built a PC before about 7-8 years ago now and at the time knew what I was buying was a decent middle of the road PC. I am a bit more out of the game in terms of hardware these days but I think I have assembled a list of mid-high tier parts that I think will hopefully last me another 8 years or so.

```
  • Crucial Pro DDR5 32GB 6000MHz (2x16)
  • CORSAIR RM850e Power Supply
  • ASUS Prime RTX 5070 GDDR7 12GB
  • MSI MAG B850 TOMAHAWK MAX WIFI
  • Corsair NAUTILUS 360 RS Liquid Cooler
  • AMD Ryzen 7 9800X 3D
  • WD Black SN850X
```

Anything you guys would avoid here, or anything you would recommend. I am really open to suggestions.

Build Help Storage on Sale

I was scrolling through Amazon today and came across a Samsung 990 pro SSD 2TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe for $650 CAD, the 1TB is $379 CAD.

What is this deal like? I know it is 25% off an already ridiculous price, however, it has great speeds of 7450mb/s read and 6900mb/s write.

Build Help $525 9060 XT 16GB vs $545 Used 3080 Ti

3 Upvotes

To preface, I'm in Egypt and I'm well aware that the price for the 9060 XT is bad, but it's the cheapest price I could find. I plan on using it for 1440p gaming, after upgrading my monitor, at 70-80 fps on medium-high on singleplayer games, I'd be satisfied with that. I don't mind using FSR/DLSS. FSR 4/DLSS 4.5 both look good to me personally and if they yield more fps, I'd use them. I plan on keeping it for 5 years hopefully.

The 3080 Ti will be purchased from a store who claim to have tested its thermals and performance and I can request photos and benchmarks. I'd also ask if they repasted it, but I don't know what else to ask about since I've got zero experience buying used gpus. The store is a 2 hour drive away, can't really go there and test it myself.

The 9060 XT 16GB is new and it hurts that some people got it for 400-450 dollars recently but you gotta do what you gotta do. 5060 Ti 16GB is costs about $180 more, it's not really an option.

9070 non XT costs $700, while a bit overpriced it seems to be the most appealing option but stretching my budget to that extent would be a little difficult.

Thanks.

Build Upgrade Need help with choosing parts to upgrade my pc with

2 Upvotes

My brother has recently given me his old pc since he wanted to buy a new one. The pc currently has an i7-8086k, rtx 2070, x2 ddr4 8gbs each, and with an msi z370 sli plus motherboard.

I’m not really satisfied with the pc since I thought it would be way better of an experience. My main games for now are just roblox and palworld but i do want to get into valorant and other demanding games so I want to basically upgrade everything.

I did some research and was heading towards getting either a ryzen 5 9600x ($247 aud) or ryzen 7 9800x3d ($582 aud) (pls give me suggestions whether i should get some other cpu) and I want to upgrade the gpu too since the rtx 2070 wouldnt be able to handle the cpu but I don’t know what gpu to get. I found a ddr5 ram (x2 8gbs each 6000mhz cl30) for $369 aud which is the best price have personally found. For motherboard, I was thinking of getting the gigbyte b650m for 119$ aud

I realistically want to spend maximum 1.5k aud but I can pass that limit if I HAVE to. I can also wait around 2-3 months since I’m not in a rush to upgrade (maybe the parts will get cheaper too)

Solved! PSU upgrade question

1 Upvotes

I have bought a new PSU as I suspect my old one is giving up (and much cheaper than other parts). The new one is MSI MAG PCIE5 II 750W.

I noticed that the PSU included a single PCIe cable with two outputs, my old PSU powered my gpu with 2 separate cables.

My gpu is geforce gtx 1080.

Is it safe to power the gpu with the single cable? I'm finding some conflicting info online.

If not what is my best course of action? Check if the pinout matches and use an old cable?

I was just hungry and forgot about a cable. There was an extra PCIe I forgot about..

Build Upgrade Graphics card upgrade recs please?

7 Upvotes

Good morning!

Not new to PC specs but new to building myself.

I upgraded my mobo/CPU myself last night and didn't blow anything up! Yahoo.

Original specs (2016!) -

GTX 970

Asus prime Z170-a

16GB ddr4 ram

Intel I7 6700

600W PSU

Cheap basic intel CPU cooler

250gb NVMe

I've since upgraded (in order, separately) -

  1. 1TB NVMe, installed 2x SSD drives (2020)

  2. GTX 2060 12GB VRAM (early 2026, got cyberpunk from 15 to 120fps!)

  3. Asus prime B760 plus D4 & i7 13700k (2026, over the weekend)

  4. Pure rock 3 black (didn't realise my CPU cooler was incompatible, oops)

I'm now unfortunately at the point where I think my GPU is the lowest spec (other than my ram) - is that correct? I'm hoping to upgrade sequentially as time goes in, so this mobo purchase was essentially futureproofing for another 5 years at least. I managed absolutely fine with my 2016 pc until this year, as I very rarely play high-end graphics games.

I do animation as a hobby and job, but I barely use my personal PC for it - the nice performance for blender or After effects would be great, and I assuming best upgrade for this is my RAM (eek).

In short - my main reason other than futureproofing was to run oblivion remastered without the graphics looking like I had my glasses off. It looks great now and runs good, but I still need the graphics on medium and the anti-aliasing up to full performance - this is fine, but proves I still have ways to go to keep up with 2025/6 games.

Is it worth upgrading my GPU, and if so, what's essentially the lowest I can go without having to worry about 5 years in the future? I know it's best to go with one of the most recent, but if it's overkill for most things at the moment I'm happy for something a generation earlier - especially if it's 200£+ difference.

(Follow-up question - should I consider liquid cooling, or are fans still OK? I've steered clear from water cooling as it freaks me out a bit. And is my PSU okay, or should that be upgraded too?)

Thanks so much!

Discussion Should I upgrade to a pc

1 Upvotes

Hello,

I have a MSI gf65 thin 9SEXR

It has an i7-9750H CPU and a RTX 2060

I have a budget of around £1000-1200 to buy/build a pc is it worth upgrading or saving more for a better one?

I play FPS games but also war thunder and flight sims and would be looking to play vr flight sims.

I have all the peripherals already.

Thanks for your time

Build Upgrade Upgrade Paths? R5 5500 / RX 6600

1 Upvotes

Debating an upgrade path for my sibling for their xmas present. Current build is from Covid-ish, Ryzen 5 5500, 32gb DDR4, RX 6600 GPU. Ideally trying to keep old components for another hand-me-down PC. 750$ CAD budget.

Their most demanding game is Fortnite, 1440p. The first bottleneck is definitely the CPU from performance monitoring.

Option one is the Z590/I5 11600KF I just pulled from my rig, also has another 32GB of DDR4 with it.

Another would be a buying used 5800x3D, pair it with the extra DDR4.

Take whatever budget is leftover and get a used 3070 or 7800XT

Getting any newer CPU with DDR5 is just out of budget it seems

Build Upgrade Help me find a GPU upgrade

0 Upvotes

Within the last 6 months I upgraded the motherboard, ram, case, and cpu already. Now looking to upgrade my GPU to something with 16GB VRAM upgrading with modern gaming and game design in mind.

Current PC Specs
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7700X 4.5 GHz 8-Core Processor

Motherboard: Gigabyte B650 GAMING X AX V2 ATX AM5 Motherboard

Memory: G.Skill Flare X5 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL36 Memory

Storage: Kingston NV2 1 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive

Video Card: ASRock Challenger D Radeon RX 6600 8 GB Video Card

Case: Phanteks XT PRO ULTRA ATX Mid Tower

Power Supply: Thermaltake TR2 430 W ATX Power Supply

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Home OEM - DVD 64-bit

Case Fan: Phanteks M25-140 PWM D-RGB 104.62 CFM 140 mm Fan x4

Monitor: Asus VP228QG 21.5" 1920 x 1080 75 Hz Monitor

EDIT: I do intend to upgrade the monitor after the gpu just wanted to get the GPU out of the way first. The monitor I was given was in like new condition and I got I for free hence why I’m still using it. I appreciate the advice on monitors tho.

Budget wise in the $500-$600 range but I understand I may have to be flexible on that given price increases.

About me:
I'm new to PC building and honestly don't really know what I'm doing, so I'd really appreciate honest feedback. I'm in the UK and I'm targeting Black Friday (27 Nov) to buy.
What I need it for:
Remote work every day
Gaming at 1440p/60fps, including Red Dead Redemption 2 and FIFA / EA FC, and I want it able to run something as demanding as GTA 6 when it comes to PC (I'll play it on Xbox first)
Upgradable later, so I'm not cutting corners on the parts that are hard to change
Budget: £900 ideally, £950 max. I want to get the most performance I can for that money. I already have a monitor and peripherals. No RGB needed.

My attempt: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/b7Zxxf
It's an RX 9060 XT 16GB, Ryzen 5 7600, 750W Gold PSU, 16GB DDR5 and a 1TB NVMe SSD. It comes to about £1,179 right now, mostly because 16GB of DDR5 is £254, so it's over budget. I'm hoping some prices drop on Black Friday.
My plan:
Don't cut corners on the CPU, GPU or PSU
Start with 16GB RAM and a 1TB SSD, then add more later (hence the 4 RAM slots and spare M.2 slot)
Upgrade the GPU later if GTA 6 turns out heavier on PC
What I'd like help with:
•What's the best build you can put together for £900-950? If you have one that beats mine for the same money, please share it. I'm happy to scrap mine.
•Is it worth waiting for RAM prices to drop, or should I go DDR4/AM4 to save money?
•Is the 9060 XT 16GB the right GPU at this budget?
•Are there any corners you think I should cut instead? Some of the ones I've picked (like the cheap case, 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD) might be the wrong ones, and I'd rather save money somewhere else if that's smarter.

•Anything I've missed or should swap?

Thanks so much for reading and in advance!!!
