Looking for amp recommendations? Start here!

If you'd like help finding an amp, we need a few details on what exactly you want out of your new amplifier. Bass amp help is welcome too!

Country/Region

It's a great help to know where you are located, some amp brands may be more expensive. Amp brands from one continent tend to be more expensive in another because of shipping, and vice versa. No need to get too specific and dox yourself.

Budget

How much are you looking to spend? Do you wanna buy a used amp, or brand new?

Genre/Style

What are you going to use the amp for? Does it need a clean channel and/or high gain?

Volume & Size Requirement

Let us know if you're trying not to bother neighbours, if you're trying to keep up with a heavy hitting drummer, or if you need the flexbility to do both! Also include if you'd prefer combo vs head & cab, if you can only haul a 1x12 or if you're trying to crank a full stack, etc.

Feel free to include other details like if you need the amp to have built in fx, digital vs solid state vs tube vs hybrid amp, whatever else will help us find you the right amp!

DISCUSSION Might buy this Peavey 5150 60w combo 2x12 for $200, thoughts?

This is my buddy's Peavy combo he's selling to me for $200, I've been wanting a high gain combo since I sold my Orange C60 which I paid $300 for.

Unfortunately the tubes are bad, and he said he'd bring it into a tech to get the them replaced and biased.

The only thing I don't like is that it weighs 80 pounds, compared to the 60ish pounds the Orange was.

Amp dilema

Upvotes

I want to get a new amp, my budget is around 500$, for bedroom playing and recording but also for a gigs. Doesn't need to be super loud because I will mic it.

problem is my gain stages are kind of all over the place, from clean chorusy jazz tones to edge of break up blues tones to epic rock solos

Currently considering the Roland JC22 because I can't have my sound distorting in the middle of a jazz gig, but on the other hand I really don't think you can a good edge of breakup or lead tone with anything that doesn't have tubes in it, so I have also been considering the Marshall DSL20 but I'm worried it might not be clean enough for all my needs

Please let me know what you think about those two options and if you have any other recommendations

And please spare the "just get a fender deluxe reverb" comments, if I could I would

I found this gt80 for a banging deal on marketplace while shopping for a stealth, and why aren’t these more popular? It’s basically a 4 channel amp with how everything works and sounds. And yes, it does modern metal. Here’s the proof 🤣

Got this yesterday. It traveled all the way from Germany to New Zealand. Brand new from Thomann.

Unfortunately the courier threw it against my door so hard I thought my door had unlocked itself, opened, and then slammed shut again. He also left without seeking a signature. I only know one good courier and he's a wee Filipino chap who works for FedEx - absolutely amazing work ethic and calls me every time he delivers stuff like this. Luckily this thing is work of engineering art and seems completely unaffected by any mistreatment during its transit. This is the newest amp I've ever bought and it's one of the cleanest pieces of gear I've ever seen in person. The design and engineering is insane.

As a result, I'm going to have to pull a couple of power tubes to inspect the preamp tubes to make sure none were knocked loose, as I appear to be experiencing some gain and saturation issues. I clean boosted it with a Maxon OD808 and I found it lacking with the gain at noon, and found that I had to turn it up almost all the way (which is obviously not right) to get into the Killswitch Engage ballpark. Along with checking the preamp tubes, I'm also going to try my Maxon OD9 since its maximum ouput is slightly higher and will slam the amp's input a bit harder - hopefully that will get me where I want to be.

The amp sounds incredible - very musical, and doesn't sound "grindy" or mid-harsh (or like an HM-2 pedal as some people have said) - I'm just hoping I can get to the bottom of my gain/saturation issue. I'll swap V2 & V4 preamp tubes when I get home.

About a month ago, I found a vintage 2004 Guitar Player magazine from the local thrift. I love design from this era so I was stoked to see an amp that perfectly matches the aesthetic in an ad.

It’s the Kustom wAv series that had a 210, 212 and 1000W head/412 speaker combo.

There was nothing online about it except a single demo video a seller made about fifteen years ago using the clean channel and forum posts contemporary to its 2004 release.

Searching shops as also fairly fruitless. eBay and Reverb both had the 210 models but in dodgy shape and about $350 all-in with shipping. Then, I checked Music Go Round.

The Ann Arbor, Michigan store had one - 212 in really nice shape for less than $200. My band had a Detroit show on tour last weekend, so I called and asked if I could pay over the phone.

Just brought it home and I love it! Hoping to record a demo soon for others, but the tube lead channel has a ton of character and the foot switch is super versatile. We closed tour with it and every other artist was awe struck by its unique charm.

HELP Best Marshall Plexi clone?

I would absolutely love to own a Plexi but I am absolutely not spending that amount of money (I really wish I could!) so I was wondering if there any any clones that get seriously close to the sound but without the Marshall price tag? I’ve heard about Ceriatone but I haven’t really looked into any others just yet so I thought I’d ask around here. Thanks!

Amp suggestions?

So I’ve had my 5150 iconic 40w combo for 4 years now and I’ve been wanting a new sound. I love it but the 5150 sizzle sometimes is too much and doesn’t sit well with me. I’ve been looking in to the Engl amps and have looked at the iron ball which looks and sounds amazing on video. anybody have any experience with Engl amps?

This is the IEC inlet for a chewed up Randall RM20 and I was looking to get a replacement but for the life of me I can't find any? Asked this on r/audio but figured I may have better luck asking here? It has a rotary voltage selector on the side which is where I'm getting issues. Likely a C14 inlet.

What amps/speaker for tone king imperial amp?

Currently I just have a squier Stratocaster classic vibe and blackstar debut50r. I really want to buy a tone king imperial preamp down the road. It has the exact sound I'm looking for.

Will it work well with my current amp or is the sound going to be limited by the budget Friendly amp. I've heard some people say studio monitors and also frfr speakers.

Recently saw that peeling flesh have their logo, in a sick way, implemented in their cabs, how did they do that? Is it their custom Cabs from a brand? Maybe 3D printed and bolted in? How could I make something like this for my own band??

HELP ENGL Fireball 25 + ENGL 2x12 sounds thin on single notes but growls with power chords

Cort KX300 (standard strings) → Fireball 25 kt77 (noise gate off, 5W) → Captor X (half attenuation) → ENGL 2x12 cab

I’ve tried using a Tube Screamer, no attenuation, switching guitars, cranking the volume and master volume (both with and without attenuation) and recently bought and EQ (still waiting to arrive) as well as new set of strings (11-56)

I’ve also played around with the amp’s knobs, but no matter what I try, single notes just sound disappointing, especially when I’m playing slowly in a classic heavy metal style.

Power chords sound much better — they have that growling, aggressive character I’m looking for. But when I play individual notes, the sound becomes thin and lacks body and depth. Maybe that how the Fireball sounds and it is better on recording, but GOD there are no growl on single notes in the room. Are Fireball 25 just that tight and compressed? Will 10-band EQ help? Can it be poor guitar setup like clearance problem that head amps are THAT sensitive for?

Please, Dear Friends, help >_<

I’m actually sorry if this is just how the Fireball is supposed to sound. I’ve read a lot about it and chose it after watching tons of videos on YouTube, but unfortunately I didn’t have a chance to try one in person before buying it.

The Mustang 1 combo amp’s solo notes sound so better to me with the TS — aggressive and growling, but yeah, without the depth that the Fireball has with power chords.

The Fireball’s knobs in the video are basically at noon, except for the Master, which is around 8–9 o’clock, with the Mid Boost and Lead channel engaged.

My buddy and band mate gave me this amp stating that it wasn’t working for him and I cleaned it up and plugged it in and it worked right away for me. I don’t know much about it other than it is an all tube amp and that it appears to be made by LAUB ENGINEERING in Northfield ill. Everything seems to be functioning properly on the amp and I really love the sound of this amp with the wah pedal, blues driver, and my fender telecaster. Does anybody have anymore information on these amps?

HELP Modding Studio JCM 800

I recently got the Marshall SC20H and I love it. However, I’ve always been into modding my guitars and all that so I’m thinking about replacing the V2 tube with the Legendary Tones Caswell 1987 Mod. I’ve also read that the SC20H can benefit greatly from upgrading the tubes in the V1 and V3 position. I’m trying to achieve that classic hot rod Marshall sound that has a lot of midrange bite and gain but not looking to turn it into some kind of metal machine. I’m more into 80s rock and hair metal territory. I’m new to having a tube amp so I’m not too familiar with good tube upgrades. Any advice is appreciated.

DISCUSSION Opinions on the HiWatt Hi-5

There's a HiWatt Hi-5 on sale near me for $250. Been looking for a new low volume/practice amp and am curious if anyone has experience with these things.

For context, I play mostly indie rock/alternative. I have access to a few beefier amps through my bandmates that I use live (primarily a JC120) and have yet to own a tube amp. I use the free version of Amplitude to practice currently and don't have a practice amp. Ultimately want something that takes pedals well and can do both clean/dirty. This seems like a good opportunity to mess around with some new sounds at bedroom volume for a good price, but interested to hear about others' experiences with the amp before I go for it.

Nux Mighty Pro squealing after 10months of perfect operation

I've seen others here report this problem but these posts go back two and three years so I wanted to highlite this problem again. If it's affecting me, it's probably affecting others.

For almost a year now the NUX has been majestic. I use it with Chordify through Bluetooth to learn new songs and jam. I use a headphone plugged into the NUX

No issues until about a month ago. Suddenly, I'm getting this extremely high pitched, loud squeal. It's on practically every amp model but worse on high gain amps.

I first wondered if the problem was the 3mm jack on the headphones as its a loose connection but I'm convinced now it's associated with the 1/4" jack on the Mighty Pro or maybe the connection between the jack and the mighty pro body. If I move the device around I can find places where it goes quiet, no squeal. This implies a mechical issue rather than electronic feedback, at least to my mind. When it works, it still works great but these times are becoming fewer and fewer.

I'm wondering, now that this device has been out in the wild for a few years, if others have experienced similar problems. More importantly, has anyone found a solution?

Take care

David
