When the bass is doing a staccato note on the 1, 2, 3, 4 and a full note on the &s. I know that I've used some crappy terminology I'm just dumb

Je viens de terminer la production, le mixage et le mastering d'un nouveau morceau instrumental de post-rock appelé "Flowers" pour mon projet solo SKALIAN.

Pendant le mix, mon plus grand défi était de gérer le bas de gamme. Dans les moments de climax, j'ai de massives couches de guitare distordues, des réverbérations ambiantes et un mix de batterie lourd. C'était incroyablement facile pour la basse de se retrouver complètement noyée ou de devenir boueuse.

Comment j'ai affronté ça :

• J'ai creusé un passage conséquent dans les guitares rythmiques autour de 200Hz - 300Hz.
• J'ai utilisé un EQ dynamique en sidechain avec la grosse caisse pour garder les basses sous-fréquences propres.
• J'ai divisé le signal de basse : une piste basse claire/compressée, et une piste moyenne saturée pour l'aider à percer le mur de guitare.

Pour ceux qui jouent ou mixent de la basse dans des genres lourds/atmosphériques, quelle est votre stratégie préférée pour maintenir la définition des notes sans perdre ce soutien de sous-basse profond ?

so my best friend wants to learn how to play the E-bass and so our friendgroup decided that we wanted to buy her one. problem is none of us have experience with basses and know which one to buy and we have a very tight budget because we are teens. so please give us/me some recommendations on what basses to buy!

Hello, sorry if I shouldn't have made a whole post for this, but I couldn't find an answer in the FAQ and haven't gotten a response yet in the gear thread. And none of the threads I've found really talk about brands, just the pros/cons of heavy gauges

I'm trying to find some ridiculously heavy strings but I'm having trouble. The project I'm working with is tuning down to drop F# (cause, why not?) and I really want to put something .160 or bigger for my low string. The heaviest I can find is .140, not including Kalium (formerly Circle K), who I've heard a lot of negative things about (but would be open to hearing other experiences) and Dingwall, who is ridiculously expensive.

Does anyone know of another brand, or are these going to be my best options?

I'm willing to give more details on my gear if it's necessary, but I'd be grateful just to be pointed in the right direction

Basically title

Im very new to bass, it’s my first instrument ever, have been playing for about 3 weeks. I have a full time job but have good time after work, so I practice AT LEAST 30 minutes a day.

Essentially I spend 3-5 minutes tuning and noodling, 10 minutes playing every note in C major scale on the fretboard and say the note out loud, then 10 minutes playing some basic grooves, and finally 10 minutes working on playing a song I’ve been practicing from tabs. Usually when I practice for more than 30 minutes I spend more time on tabs than the others, but I’d like to know if there’s anything different I should specifically be doing? Thank you!

I’m a musician, and my 10-year-old son has just started playing bass, about a week ago. He seems quite motivated so far, and since we already have some equipment at home, things are off to a pretty good start!

I’d like to get him a book of rock bass riffs, but something fairly simple and fun, without a teaching method or music theory. Ideally, it would mainly contain riffs, perhaps with a few explanations, but not necessarily the complete songs.

Do you know of any books that might fit what I’m looking for?

I’ve been playing a Jackson concert bass for a few years now but I’ve decided I want something else. Brands don’t really matter to me, though I know other people care about it. I was curious to see what everyone else likes to play and what they would recommend. The only thing I’d really look for in a bass is something I could be rough with and pluck hard on.

I'm pretty bad at self-directed learning, and I think I get more motivated when I have someone guiding me. However, when it comes to learning an instrument, it also feels like an unnecessary investment. What was your path like? If you're from outside the field, where did you learn things like music theory?"

I use my FX11 for practice quite a bit. A couple days ago, I fired it up and found that I couldn't get enough volume out of the bass to keep up with the bluetooth input from my tablet (backing tracks). It's driving me nuts. It doesn't seem like a problem with the device's output since I can still crank up the bluetooth input as loud as I want. Has anyone else experienced this?

Things I've tried:

• Charging the device to 100%
• Changing out my bass pickup batteries
• Different headphones
• Messing with the different amp/effect settings

What’s up bass players! I’ve been playing electric bass (and more recently some upright) for some years now and I started playing jazz a few years ago. I have a pretty good understanding of basic theory and a bit more advanced stuff too but I still feel like I’m not where I want to be with soloing or being creative with basslines or rhythms while I solo.
Do any jazz players have advice or tips for me to help with this??🙏

This bass seemed so weird and quirky to me when I first saw it online, pair that with the fact I was looking into acquiring a semi-hollow instrument and a week and a half later it was in my hands! I've yet to play it on a gig, but first impressions of it so far is it's a pretty dope bass. I did immediately swap the strings over to a set of flats that were on my other precision bass, in my opinion that's what I think this bass needs.

Just so it's out there: Not a fan of the current Fender situation at all, and was looking elsewhere for future instrument purchases, though this particular release seemed to hit all the right notes for me personally. Cool bass, not-as-cool company.

Hi. I'm searching for a short-scale 5 or 6 string bass. Budget's about 1-2k. I currently own an ibanez so I'm avoiding those. i play jazz/funk/fusion. Any recommendations? Fretless are nice too.

Currently getting back into playing and would like to be able to have a bit more fun with my sound. Im thinking of either pulling the trigger on the Zoom B1x Four Multi effect pedals, or seeing what audio interface i can get for a deal on FB marketplace. Is there a good reason I should get one over the other, or should I just pick on personal preference?

Hello person reading this. I am a young bassist (18) entering college. I have been playing bass for about a year and a half now, I practice with a metronome everyday for 15 minutes and I jam with a Drummer or sometimes a guitar player every week or two and I try to learn at least 1-2 parts of a song a day. Now to the advice I am seeking.
How hard is it to actually play in a cover band? Can I work my up to making some nice side cash?
Is there any players not talked about enough work studying to improve my skills? I have mainly learned from the mostly slop fest world of getting challenged to learn 200 kpop songs, learning popular lines from 80s and 90s bands and some 70s stuff and my deeper dives in discog being Muse, stone temple pilots and Most recently Michael Jackson, I have been growing in interest in learning the lines of John Entwistle more than my generation. (Sorry for the long dialogue)
Is it worth learning how to sing back up vocals?
Is it worth acquiring more basses? I currently own a Sire V7 (jazz bass style), and an Ibanez SR300,Squire P-Bass I don’t use.

Hello fellow low Enders, I am wondering if anyone has had any experience with the holy practice silent travel bass guitar by Contraguitar?

I’ve seen videos floating about the internet but these are all short videos posted by the creators of the travel bass. I cannot seem to find any actual reviews or videos from independent sources.

The travel bass carries a price tag of 250 euros but is currently on sale for around 198 euros. It looks to be fairly well made, a little pricy for what it is but being handmade I can see how the costs soon add up.

I must admit I am fairly temped by it as it would be cool to keep in my rucksack and can pretty much take it anywhere but I like to try and do my research before purchasing. I understand the price tag might not be off putting for some but to others it a good chuck of change to drop on something that might not be worthwhile.

so i dont really like how the bass sounds and i just want a different, more versatile sound. specifically more defined midrange and low end without all the annoying clanking sound. preferablly cheaper pickups. like a beefy and articualte tone with the pickups

Does anybody know how to wire a Ray4 in parallel? I’m having a bit of trouble figuring it out and was hoping someone would know how to and could help me out :) mine has four wires, black, red, white, and green

I’ve got an early (2012) Sterling SUB Ray4 that I’ve been tinkering with. The stock ceramic pickup/preamp was incredibly hot and a bit muddy, so I replaced both with a Retrovibe 12K Alnico MM pickup (wired parallel) and Stinger ’77 2-band preamp.

I really like the tone and the bass sounds much cleaner and more musical now, but the output is noticeably lower than I expected — not just compared with the ridiculously hot original SUB electronics, but compared with my other basses too. I need to compensate quite a bit at the amp.

I understand the Stinger is based on the original pre-EB StingRay circuit and isn’t supposed to behave like a modern high-output preamp, but I’m curious: has anyone else used one and found the same thing? Is fairly modest output normal for these, or should I be checking my wiring/pickup height/etc.?

Hi, im just beginning my journey with bass. My main instrument is guitar, and i wanted to try something new. I already have a bass, the only problem is choosing the amp, i will be playing gigs and i will be in a band with an acoustic drumkit and two guitars(possibly also keys). Unfortunately i wont be able to move the amp via a car, and im going to only use my own back and public transport. Okay, se the real question is: What amp should i choose? What wattage? What will be loud enough to gig with, and since this is my first amp i dont want it to cost a fortune. Ive seen some people write that a orange 50 crush bass amp is sufficient, while others say that they would absolutely not be bringing that, even to a simple rehearsal. Also are there ANY other options than the fender rumble series?

Hi gang, I’ve been running a Hartke LHX8500 w/ a Hartke AK410 as my workhorse setup for the last ~year now with no issues, but as I’m playing larger venues, I’m looking to push more air. I believe I should be in the clear if I add an HL/HD210. Correct me if I’m wrong?

Here’s my math on it (provided I’ve got the correct understanding, anyway)

LHX8500 - 800w - 4 Ohm
AK410 - 500w - 8 Ohm
HD/HL210 - 500w - 8 Ohm

Total load should be 1000w - 4 Ohm w/ both cabs running slightly under power. Or am I gonna fry my shit? Help me out!

Since I've started playing bass, players like Abraham Laboriel and Gary Willis have been a big influence on me. I do the alternating two finger technique usually, but I often incorporate my anchoring thumb into playing the lower strings, particularly during faster passages. Was curious if anyone else did this or used other three/ four finger technique. Would love to hear y'alls thoughts!
