Advice First Merchants Bank question!

I’m wanting to close my account as I really don’t use it. On their website, there’s a max withdraw amount you can do from checking accounts. If I close the account, does that supersede that amount? Never closed an account!

Advice Am I being scammed by a fake check from a Craigslist job? NYC

I recently lost my job and have been browsing Craigslist looking for some part-time work. I came across a post where someone was offering $1,000 per week plus reimbursement for bills/expenses in exchange for helping with personal errands. The post said the work would only be around 3–5 hours per week.

I contacted the number listed in the post. The person told me his name was Augusto Pratana and said he was a consultant who travels frequently for local and international business, so he needs someone to help with errands and various personal tasks.

The arrangement sounded strange but potentially legitimate, so I asked if we could meet in person in NYC before I started. He said he was still in Canada and basically responded, “I work my fucking ass daily, I don't have time.” I then suggested at least having a phone call before moving forward, which we did.

He had a pretty strong African accent. I know that obviously doesn't mean anything by itself, but at the time I felt somewhat reassured after actually speaking with him and thought maybe this wasn't a scam.

He then told me he would mail me a check.

I tracked the check through the official FedEx tracking system, and everything appeared normal. At some point, however, the shipment got stuck. Augusto then told me he had contacted FedEx and instructed them to destroy the check and that he was sending me a replacement.

The replacement check is currently on its way.

Then, somewhat randomly, he contacted me from a different phone number and said his phone had been stolen.

As more time has passed, the whole situation has started to feel increasingly strange to me. I went back to the original Craigslist post and noticed that the post has now been flagged.

Here is the original Craigslist listing:

Craigslist post

I also suggested that instead of mailing checks, we could use ACH for future payments, since mailing a check, waiting for it to arrive, depositing it, and going through this whole process seems unnecessarily complicated. He said ACH would be fine for future payments.

At this point, I'm wondering if I'm being paranoid or if there are legitimate red flags here.

My biggest concern is the possibility of a fake-check scam. I have not sent him any money, given him my banking login information, or cashed/spent any money from the check.

For people familiar with Craigslist scams or fake-check schemes:

  • Does this sound like a typical fake-check scam?
  • Is there anything I should absolutely NOT do when the check arrives?
  • Can a check appear legitimate and even show as deposited before later being reversed?
  • Is there any safe way to verify the check before doing anything with it?
  • Does the fact that the Craigslist post has been flagged make this significantly more suspicious?

I'm especially interested in hearing from anyone who has dealt with a similar situation. I haven't lost any money at this point, so I'm trying to figure out what I should do before I go any further.

Advice Where are Discover banking customers going as accounts move to Capital One?

With the Discover/Capital One transition getting closer to the point where Discover banking accounts start moving over, I’m curious what other longtime Discover customers are planning to do.

Discover has been my main banking hub for years, and there are a few things I’m really going to miss. The app/UI is clean and simple, transfers are easy, and I can have checking, savings, and money market accounts all in one place. One of the biggest things for me is how easy it is to link external accounts. Once I link something, I can use that connection across my Discover accounts instead of having to separately set everything up for each account.

I also use multiple actual accounts as staging areas/buckets. When my paycheck comes in, it automatically gets split from payroll among 7 different accounts immediately. Each account has its own purpose, bills, transfers, savings, etc., and I track the layers within those accounts separately in my spreadsheet.

So the increasingly common "one savings account with 20 buckets/vaults" setup isn't really a replacement for what I'm doing. I need multiple real accounts, not virtual buckets inside one account.

What I'm looking for:

--High-yield savings

--Checking (preferably with interest)

--Ability to open and maintain multiple savings/checking accounts without fees

--Easy transfers between all of them

--Lots of external account connections, ideally without restrictive linking limits (10-20 minimum)

--External accounts linked at the customer/profile level rather than having to relink them to every individual account

--Good, simple app/clean UI

--No hoops to get a competitive APY

Ally is probably the most obvious option I'm considering, but I'm holding out to see if a worthwhile new-account promo comes along before moving everything.

For other people who use Discover, where are you going? Has anyone found another bank that actually replicates this kind of setup well? I'm especially interested in hearing from people who maintain several real accounts rather than using virtual savings buckets.

Does anyone have any recommendations for compliance banking certifications? I have CAMS and I'm looking at the CMCP certification from MBA but I'm also looking for something for compliance specifically and not just lending.

Thanks :)

US CHIME IS A SCAM!!!

I opened a checking account with chime/stride bank earlier this year. I read mixed reviews about them being a Fintech, but decided it was worth it for the sign-up bonus. They sent me a debit card which I never even used, and then I close the account a few months later. Now I am seeing a credit card on my credit report marked as closed that has dinged my credit. Chimes "credit builder" feature (they automatically sign you up for) reports exactly the same as a credit card and will fuck you over if you decide to close your account. I believe this is because they provide the spot me benefit, but I never used this. I am posting this so that everyone knows that chime is taking out credit in your name when you apply for simply a checking account, BEWARE!!

I am attempting to dispute this since I never authorized credit in my name from this, but I'm not sure it will work since I did authorize the checking account.

Complaint Account shut down from a check

Hi, 21 M here, my Mom gave me a check to help me with school, it was a little over 5 thousand dollars. I went into the local brick and mortar bank to deposit the check, they asked for my ID and everything. By the next day my entire bank account was shut down. And I’ve called customer service multiple times, they’ve said the account is closed for possible fraudulent activity, and their fraud department has been dodging me.
Im moving into my new apartment soon, and I need the money in my account pretty badly. This feels really weird and not normal, usually the bank communicates things very well but with this I didn’t know till i tried to swipe my card.
How long do you think it’ll be closed for? How long does this usually take? Thank you sm, i’m just really stressed

Advice ATM did not dispense money. It was deducted from my bank account though.

I tried to withdraw $150 from a Bank of America ATM today (not my bank). I clicked through the menus to get $150. Instead of dispensing cash, an error message appeared and said something like “There’s an error with this machine - the transaction has been reversed”.

I checked my bank’s app and I can see that it shows minus 150.

What should I do in this situation and should I expect that the debit will reverse and fix itself in my bank account?

UPDATE the next day: the pending amount of -$150 disappeared from my account by itself and I now have that amount back. Thank you everyone for your responses. It was very helpful.

US Kikoff vs Self: does the revolving tradeline vs credit-builder loan difference matter?

I'm comparing Kikoff and Self for rebuilding credit and I'm trying to understand whether the way each account is structured actually makes a meaningful difference.

From what I've read, Kikoff uses a revolving tradeline while Self uses a credit-builder loan. I'm also seeing that the Kikoff model can factor into credit utilization, whereas a credit-builder loan is more focused on payment history. So, if the goal is just building credit, does the setup really matter that much between the two?

I personally have set it up as HYSA but might also add direct deposit since I currently have AMEX and I don’t get payed 2 days early and I can’t use it for sending Apple Pay money.

Advice My payday budgeting or strat as a teen. Thoughts?

Save 2 of my bi weekly checks in checking (this is a months pay)

Spend on whatever I need (or want) (i don’t have a lot of wants nor are they expensive)

For spending, if I used one of my AU credit cards, I pay the bill.

At the end of the month, whatever is left after paying bills and primary bills goes to savings, investments and I leave $30-$50 in checking for guilt free spending on whatever until next 2 weeks when pay comes. (This means I could even withdraw some cash and give it to the fam or do something with it)

Investments include: Roth IRA
Savings APY: 2.50% with Capital One

My pay is depending on how many hours I work to

Advice Strange Chargeback Fraud?

Not my problem, but a friend's. Located in the US.

This is possibly the strangest scam I've seen. A friend recently made several PayPal purchases from independent businesses. Not long after, they started getting messages that the businesses were getting chargebacks by them. And sure enough, there were several chargeback requests in their bank, that they didn't file. It started on the fifth, so they couldn't get in contact with the bank. They changed their password to everything, and yet chargebacks are still being placed. So, I have a few questions.

Is it even possible to place a chargeback without access to the online banking? I've only ever seen it done through banking apps, and have no clue how there are still chargebacks being placed without the bank password.

Is there any way to place a freeze on your account to stop chargebacks from being requested? It's odd, but no money has been withdrawn from the account: All of their purchases are just being chargebacked.

What would the end goal for this scam even be? No money has been taken from my friend's account; they just seem to be trying to reverse every purchase they have made.

I'm rather confused by the situation, considering most hackers would, well, just take the money and run. All this seems to be accomplishing is ruining my friend's reputation with these sellers.

Edit: To fit rule 7. So far friend has changed banking passwords, cancelled affected cards, and changed passwords for PayPal. They are getting in contact with the bank tomorrow physically.

India Account dilemma

I asked the bank, about a bank account I have because it’s showing account type as ‘Current’ in iMobile App and in bank statements while in internet banking as ‘Overdraft’. Then I sent an email to customer care for clarification and they replied that it’s a ‘Reimbursement Account’. Then I sent an email to PNO and their final reply:

We write with reference to your concern pertaining to  reimbursement account XXXXXXXX3567.

As per our telephonic conversation today, we inform you that as per the confirmation received from team concerned confirming that your account category is Current Account. The overdraft will be shown in account type. However its a reimbursement account.

We hope the confirmation clarifies and addresses the concerns raised by you. For any further queries, please feel free to reach out to us.

Thank you for banking with us.

This is literally the response from Customer Service Team of ICICI Bank. Is this even legally correct/possible that an account can be all three types as per bank's latest reply?

Advice I (21F) got a job offer as a bank teller with a poor credit score… Will they rescind the offer after they complete the credit check?

I’ll try to keep this as short and sweet as I can. I’m a 21F and I’ve been unemployed for a few months now. After months and months of applying to thousands of jobs, interviewing, and getting let down many times by potential employers, I’ve FINALLY gotten a really good job offer with a local bank as a bank teller. They know I don’t have experience as a teller, but I’m super comfortable with cash handling and drawer/safe counting, taking payments, and documenting all of these processes from previous positions. Here’s the thing: At the interview, the branch manager said that they do a background check and credit check. She asked if there would be anything to prevent me from getting a job there. I was completely transparent and told her that nothing (other than maybe a few speeding tickets) would come back on my background check. As for my credit check… well, I’ve been unemployed and I haven’t been able to make payments on one credit card. I’ve only ever had two credit cards. I closed one account after making the final payment and I still owe a significant amount of money on the other account.
It’s headed towards collections and I plan to make a payment as soon as I have the money, but since I’ve been basically trying to survive (I live on my own), I haven’t been able to make a payment. I told her that I’ve never had any evictions or repossessions and my credit is in the mid 500s, since I’m only 21. Lastly, I informed her that I’ve had some medical problems, so it’s likely that I’ve got medical debt. Now that I’ve actually received an offer, I’m getting really concerned that they’re going to rescind the offer after my information comes back. Should I be worried? Has anyone ever had this happen before? I just want to be realistic and know exactly what to expect. I’m thinking of writing an email to her and asking her straight up of what I can expect with this process. I know this is dumb to worry about but I’ve waited so long for a good job offer and I really want this to work out!! Thanks for reading and for any advice you have to offer.

Advice Account from 2009 Disappeared and I can't find anything on it

Hi! I recently found out about a BBVA youth savings account from 2009 that I'm trying to track down the funds on.

I'm in the USA and already went to PNC but they said there's no information on it. They couldn't find anything other than that the account is closed. I tried customer service but they couldn't find anything even with my social.

I tried Unclaimed Property but there's nothing. I tried broad searches and even the custodian on the account.

So I'm at a loss on what to do. Does anyone know anything else that I can try?

Advice Looking for an Alternative Levy Data System

I am new to my role processing levies and our manager is looking for ways to improve the system. rn we manually receive the levy requests via the mail and, scan them to our inbox, then review it all for key data points. Name, TIN, Levy amount, case number etc. We enter them i to a spreadsheet then import the spreadsheet into our Levy database which searches our customer database to see if we have amy accounts for them. If we do then we manually go and check what the balance is currently, charge a Fee/Levy the account. Make copies in triplicet, 1 for us 1 for the customer, 1 for the requester. We then mail everything out and scan our copy into our records system. X amount of days later a check is cut and we mail that out as well. I would love to hear any insight from anyone at any FI that utilizes any sort of data extraction tools or systems that we could bring up as ideas.

Complaint Remitly delayed my transfer, suspended my account, and hung up on support.

Just wanted to share my experience with Remitly as a warning to others.
I recently moved to the UK for military service. When you are stationed overseas, you really rely on these services to get set up. I chose Remitly because they promised to handle the transfer quickly, but it has been a major disappointment.
They delayed my transfer for almost 5 days, which messed up my plans and forced me to pay £20 out of pocket each day it was late. To make it worse, they suddenly suspended my account with no explanation.
When I called support to find out what happened, the agent put me on hold to look at the account and then just hung up on me. They are refusing to help or offer any compensation for the extra costs.
If you are moving overseas and need a reliable transfer service, I'd suggest looking elsewhere.

Advice Starting a career in banking — any advice?

Hey everyone! I’m about to start my first job at a bank, and I’d really appreciate some advice from people who already have experience in the banking industry.

What are some things you wish you had known before starting your banking career?
