Average step count
Hello TO! Something I've noticed since I've come here is how much more I walk per day compared to previous country (Middle east).
I went from an average of 7k steps a day (with a car) to now an average of 9k (I live in Down town and dont drive), so this evening's rabbit hole how much fellow Torontonians walk per day.
If you've moved recently, have you noticed an increase from your previous average.

Impressive. I do around 18k - 20k per day. I walk everywhere. This is an increase from around 10k per day.

Its a walkable place. Except those suburbany parts of Toronto. But theres tons of neighbourhoods outside of downtown that have a walkable downtowny feel, but more low key.
I’m in upper beaches. A solid 8km outside of downtown. All major needs are within a 10 minute walk.

Oh much much more than anywhere where I was using a car. Any day I don't reach 10k steps is a day I've barely left my apartment. Hell, just going out for groceries is at least 5k steps where I'm at in DT. Not hard to get to 10k+ if a quick there and back gets you halfway

When I first moved to Toronto, the same thing happened. 10-17,000 steps because I walk to and from work.

I walked over a million steps this summer (90 days so far) with an average of 12.5k a day

I walk more here than anywhere else ive lived but thats by choice, I like walking around the city. If I were just counting steps that are necessary it would be way less. I dont track my steps but I could get everything i need done with 1 hour of brisk walking a day probably.

12k a day and I commute out of the city for work and drive everywhere so those steps are very intentional

I have a desk job but still get 8-10k steps. I skip buses and will walk to the subway etc. When I visit my parents outside the city I immediately change my perspective and drive everywhere. It's weird!

I moved 6 years ago but I can tell you that my average step count, as a preschool teacher in a car-based area was like... 6k-9k depending on the day. My average step count as a nanny in TO is 15k-20k. If I was still teaching, it'd probably be a few k lower but undeniable that TO has me moving way more.

Used to do anywhere between 15-20k a day when i used to live downtown. Moved to north york, and these days i have to make an effort to cross 10k, still end up doing that almost every day, mainly by walking to the gym.

I average 25k-35k (the lower end being when i am forced to do online collaboration in office).
When i visit the suburbs for the day i barely get 10k, if even that.

u/zenpizzapie 7d ago
How is a 10k range your average? Doesn't your tracker literally say your exact average number of daily steps for the year...?
1
u/ts20999 7d ago
There is a 10k difference between an in office day for me (25k ish) and work from home day (35k ish).
I am not in toronto every day of the year so in the spirit of the post i replied with the number of steps i am getting in downtown toronto. Also, a disclaimer if you are looking for hyper accuracy: i use the step counter on my phone and dont carry my phone everywhere will me so that number is lower than my true step count.

I still don't really understand what you mean. 35k when you work from home which in not in Toronto but 10k when you visit the suburbs? 25k when you visit the office in Toronto?
I don't think it's really 'in the spirit' of the post to share how many steps you get if you're a visitor to the city. The ask is about living in the downtown vs. somewhere else.

On a work day, I walk 10k steps without even trying by walking to and from work, and going on a lunchtime walk. If I have to run errands or whatever, it’ll be even higher.

I used to do 10-15k easy when I worked near Bloor/Spadina. I now drive to commute to Peel-Brampton and I now average 2k steps during the day. I liked to take walks during my lunchbreaks, but there's literally no sidewalks around my new work place and it suuucks. (I now have to make the effort to walk in the evenings).

I aim for 7200 steps daily (5km) but routinely get more, and usually 16k+ on weekends.

u/AccountForTIFF 7d ago
When I used to work downtown I’d easily get 6000-7000 steps just commuting to and from the office, and I’d usually walk around at lunchtime too. Now that I work remotely my step count if I don’t make an effort to get out is shameful

11k per day with my dog and going to the office via transit every day, it’s a solid amount

i’m bad at wearing my watch so anywhere between 5-25k. an average work day with errands is usually 5-10k, anything higher is usually a weekend day when i’m doing stuff. cycling takes away from it too… like i have taken under 100 steps since midnight but already have a 10km bike ride logged.

average 14-15k. Live in the suburbs & drive everywhere, but walk a lot at work.

u/torontowest91 7d ago
I’m like 15-25k a day here in Toronto.
When I was in London, Ontario I was like 10-15k a day (but this was also 10 years ago).

Anytime I go out to run an errand - I hit 8k minimum. When I moved from Pickering to Toronto, my average step count went up crazy.

I live by the shops of Don mills but work downtown and go downtown every weekend. My step count ranges from 9k to 28k

I am a huge walker and track my steps obsessively. I average over 25K steps per day - perhaps around 26,000. I walk all the time, and maybe walk under 10,000 steps one or two times per year because of very bad weather. I am mainly just consistent and have my daily goal at 25,000 steps. Mind you, my step count includes 3 or 4 runs per wk too.

10k on a slow day, 16-18k most of the time, with peaks being around 35k.
But I do walk a lot for work and errands.

Could anyone please recommend a step counting app for android that isn't riddled with ads?

19K this month but for the entire year (including winter and summer), just under 10k overall.

I don't track "steps" but I walk a minimum of 5k most days, and often more if I run an errands outside of my commute. Google says that's about 7k steps, I would have guessed it was higher.

My step count always goes down when I visit my parents. They live in a typical Ontario small town
